Abstract Reid, D. G., Graham, N., Rihan, D. J., Kelly, E., Gatt, I. R., Griffin, F., Gerritsen, H. D., and Kynoch, R. J. 2011. Do big boats tow big nets? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1663–1669. Fishing vessel capacity for trawlers is generally expressed in terms of length, tonnage, and engine power, assuming that a larger vessel has a greater fishing power. Management uses effort-control measures such as kW-day limits based on this assumption. Many studies have shown a weak and noisy relationship between effort and modelled catches, and explanatory models often require the inclusion of a skipper or vessel effect to explain the variance. A key element in this effect is the choice of gear size. Relationships are investigated between metrics of the vessel (length, tonnage, and power) and the gear towed (length of groundgear, or circumference of the net opening) in Scottish and Irish whitefish, Nephrops, and pelagic otter trawlers. Often, the vessel size did not correlate with that of the gear, or did so only for smaller vessels (<1000 hp). The key implication is that effort management based on vessel metrics alone is not appropriate, because it is a poor predictor for gear size, and hence for fishing power. Effort restrictions may actually encourage the adoption of larger gears for a given vessel, to maximize the value of a limited-time resource.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT During the evening of the second day following the Exxon Valdez oil spill, an estimated 15,000 to 30,000 gallons (57,000 to 114,000 L) of North Slope crude oil were eliminated using in-situ combustion techniques. The oil was collected with the 3M Company's Fire Boom, towed in a U-shaped configuration behind two fishing boats. Working with 500-foot (152-m) tow lines, a 450-foot (137-m) boom was moved at about one-half to one knot (0.26 to 0.52 m/s) through slightly emulsified oil patches downwind of the spill. Once oil had filled the downstream portion of the U-shaped boom and the boats were clear of any surrounding slicks, a gelled-fuel igniter was released from one of the tow boats. Shortly after ignition, flames gradually spread out over the entire area of the contained oil. As flames reached 200 to 300 feet (61 to 91 m) into the air, the area of the contained oil layer (and therefore the size and intensity of the fire) could be controlled by adjusting the speed of the vessels. The total burn time was approximately 75 minutes; however, the intense part of the burn lasted for about 45 minutes. The original volume of oil, likely between 15,000 and 30,000 gallons, was reduced to approximately 300 gallons (1,136 L) of stiff, taffy-like burn residue that could be picked up easily upon completion of the burn. The controlled elimination of crude oil therefore resulted in an estimated 98 percent or better efficiency of burn.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT One of the greatest challenges facing responders to a recent intermediate fuel oil (IFO 380) spill was the recovery of tar mats and patties from the surface waters of the Gulf of Mexico before they could impact the barrier islands of Texas. When the marine barge Buffalo 292 spilled approximately 3000 barrels of IFO 380 in heavy weather conditions in Galveston Bay in March 1996, it is estimated that more than half of the spilled IFO 380 was swept out into the Gulf of Mexico by high northerly winds. There was great success in tracking the oil as it moved around the Gulf and eventually formed into large tar mats and patties. The overall weathered condition of the IFO 380 soon made use of conventional offshore skimmers ineffective, so responders began looking at ways to effectively recover the tar mats and patties before they could impact the barrier island beaches of Texas during the busy spring break season. Since commercial shrimping vessels could tow a net and were designed for slow operating speeds, it was decided to try using these vessels to recover the tar mats and patties. By modifying traditional nets and using a spotter aircraft to move the shrimping vessels to the greatest concentration of tar mats and patties, participants made the operation a success.

While the field location is not very similar to the north of Western Australia, the field development solution is very relevant. Several subsea clusters are tied back to a semi-submersible platform with export of gas and condensate via pipelines to shore. Other aspects to the project that are relevant to Western Australia are split location engineering between Norway and India, fabrication of the hull in Korea and subsequent heavy lift transport to the assembly yard, pre-installation of the mooring system, and tow to field with ocean going tug boats. The semi concept, which was used for the Gjøa development, is a mature technology with few technical challenges on a conceptual level. On the other hand the building of an oil and gas platform for A$2 billion has many challenges, both economical and technical, that have to be solved to have a successful project for both the client and the contractor.

Abstract:
The effects of reduced energy intake (ad libitum and 75% of ad libitum) and elevated mineral-vitamin intake (100 and 150% of NAS-NRC daily recommendations) on foot and leg development, incidence and severity of toe lesions, structural soundness scores and feedlot performance were studied in crossbred boars from 35 to 330 days of age (295 days on test). Toe measurements increased over time with little effect of elevated mineral-vitamin levels. At an equal age, ad libitum-fed boars had larger foot measurements; however, weight-correction usually produced larger values for limit-fed boars relative to body weight at 85 and 190 days on test. Incidence and severity of pad and horn lesions were generally not affected by the dietary treatments, but incidence of lesions was generally greatest for the hind outside toe. Limit-fed boars had higher (P < 0.05) soundness scores compared with ad libitum-fed boars, while dietary mineral-vitamin level had no effect. Daily gain of limit-fed boars was 76% that of ad libitum-fed boars with no overall affect on feed per gain ratio. Feedlot performance was similar between mineral-vitamin levels. The findings of this study indicate that elevating mineral and vitamin intake above that recommended by the NAS-NRC (1979) had no effect on toe, foot and leg development or the resulting structural soundness. Restricting feed intake produced boars with slightly larger toes which appeared more structurally sound when examined at an equal weight. Toe lesion scores, however, were similar between energy levels and there appeared to be no relationship between toe lesion scores and structural soundness scores. Abstract:
Footwear plays an important role in worker safety. Work boots with safety toes are often utilized at mine sites to protect workers from hazards. Increasingly, mining operations require metatarsal guards in addition to safety toe protection in boots. While these guards provide additional protection, the impact of metatarsal guards on gait are unknown. This study aimed to measure the effects of 4 safety work boots, steel toe, and steel toe with metatarsal protection in wader- and hiker-style boots, on level and inclined walking gait characteristics, during ascent and descent. A total of 10 participants completed this study. A motion capture system measured kinematics that allowed for the calculation of key gait parameters. Results indicated that gait parameters changed due to incline, similar to previous literature. Wader-style work boots reduced ankle range of motion when ascending an incline. Hip, knee, and ankle ranges of motion were also reduced during descent for this style of boot. Wader-style boots with metatarsal guards led to the smallest ankle range of motion when descending an inclined walkway. From these results, it is likely that boot style affects gait parameters and may impact a miner’s risk for slips, trips, or falls.

Abstract:
The engine cooling system that drives traditional fishing boats uses a hopper cooler type system that experiences excessive cooling. Ideally, the temperature of the cooling water in the hopper should be approximately 70-80°C. The fact, it is only 42°C, thus reducing the effective power generated by the engine. This excessive cooling may cause an increase in fuel consumption and emissions. One method to reduce excessive cooling is to increase the temperature of the cooling media in the hopper. The author has conducted a simple experiment on a traditional fishing boat in Kenjeran, Surabaya, by installing a valve to control the flow of seawater entering the hopper. However, the use of seawater as a cooling medium has a maximum operating temperature limitation, so there is no precipitation of salt and lime, which is 50oC. At this temperature, the benefits are not large, only an increase in speed of 4.4% and a fuel reduction of 4.3%. Therefore, the existing seawater cooling system must be modified to an indirect seawater cooling system to get optimum performance improvement. The re-modification allows the temperature of the freshwater in the hopper to be maintained at 80°C, so that the speed of the fishing boat may increase by 14%, with a fuel savings of 12.3%.

Abstract:
Abstract The tense systems in English and Arabic are markedly similar, but one striking feature makes the two-part ways: Arabic boasts the capacity of expressing the past and the future in forms that are not tallied with what English does. Arabic and English can express the future and the past in the present form. Yet Arabic, especially Qurʾanic Arabic, has the singular capacity for expressing the future in past form and the past in present form. The mismatch in the Arabic tense system in the English translation of the Qurʾan is given due attention in the present paper, and a new approach is presented to address this significant problem. The four translations selected are Arberry’s, Yusuf Ali’s, Pickthall’s and Asad’s. A model is proposed to analyze significant selections of such mismatches, based on graphical representations of TOC, TOE and linking form. The study concludes that the most inconsistent translation is Pickthall’s, while Arberry’s is the most consistent of all. It also reveals that although Asad is not fully proficient in English like Arberry, he succeeds in clearing the hurdle of translating tense form-content mismatch most of the time.

Abstract:
The OMS together with UNICEF launched a program, recognized worldwide on the promotion, protection and encouragement of breastfeeding. Being recognized by this organization the importance that health professionals have in influencing the success of breastfeeding, through the care they provide, it is necessary to create important resources and strategies in order to successfully overcome the difficulties. With this speech as a goal, implement strategies facilitating good practice in the area of breastfeeding, to fill some gaps in the evaluation of the National Assessment Initiative HAB, so that the MAC can maintain accreditation as a Baby Friendly Hospital. We outlined strategies to achieve the goal, one strategy was to raise awareness among health professionals in the urgency of the MAC service, to the importance of initiating breastfeeding up to one hour of the life of the newborn, creating acquisitions of knowledge, attitudes, learning and training capacity for the practice of breastfeeding. Another strategy has to do with the importance of Skin to skin contact, without interruptions in the 1st hour of life, and it is essential for the well-being of infants, which should be a priority for health professionals. In order to monitor interventions to achieve the goal, we created a sheet of breastfeeding in order to improve the circulation of information and all the registrations. In the implementation of strategies to encourage breastfeeding and skin to skin contact, was created awareness training that will be provided to pregnant and healthcare professionals of the service, to promote skills for all to intervene in a more efficient and effective breastfeeding. It is then, up to health professionals to be prepared as good as possible in order to practice specialized and specific care for the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding.

Nouisri, Amine. "Identification paramétrique en dynamique transitoire : traitement d’un problème couplé aux deux bouts." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015SACLN005/document.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with parameters identification in transient dynamic in case of highly noisy experimental data. One long-term goal is the derivation of a non-intrusive method dedicated to the implementation in a commercial finite element code.In this work, the modified error in the constitutive relation framework is used to treat the identification of material parameters. The minimization of the cost function under constraints leads, in the case of transient dynamics, to a « two points boundary value problem » in which the differential space-time problem involves both initial and final time conditions. This results in a problem coupling the direct and adjoint fields, whose treatment is difficult. In the first part, methods such as those based on the « Riccati equations » and the « shooting methods » have been studied. It is shown that the identification is robust even in the case of highly corrupted measures, but these methods are limited either by the implementation intrusiveness, conditioning problems or the numerical cost.In the second part, an iterative over-relaxation approach is developed and compared to the aforementioned approaches on academic problems in order to validate the interest of the method. Finally, comparisons are carried out between this approach and a « discretized » variation of the formulation introduced by Bonnet and Aquino [Inverse Problems, vol. 31, 2015]

Abstract:
This thesis studies the historic encounter between United States Navy airship K-74 and Nazi submarine U-134 in World War II. The Battle of the Atlantic is examined through case study of this one U-boat and its voyage. In all things except her fight with the American blimp, the patrol was perfectly typical. Looked at from start to finish, both her reports and the reports of the Allies encountered, many realities of the war can be studied. U-134 sailed to attack shipping between Florida and Cuba. She was challenged by the attack of United States Navy airship K-74 over the Florida Straits. It is the only documented instance of battle between two such combatants in history. That merits attention. Thesis finding disprove historian William Eliot Morison’s contention that the K-74 airship bombs were not dropped and did not damage the U-boat. Study of this U-boat and its antagonist broadens our understanding of the Battle of the Atlantic. It is a contribution to our knowledge of military, naval, aviation, and local history.

Abstract:
The world crucially needs to reduce the level of emissions being released in the environment in order to combat climate change. With the global population increasing and economies continuing to grow, the circular economy has been heralded by many as the potential solution to economic prosperity whilst also reducing primary resource use and emissions. However, the existence of environmental rebound effect has the potential to severely limit the emission reductions of the circular economy by increasing consumption elsewhere. This paper focuses on the definition of economic rebound effect and on its impact on a peer-to-peer boat sharing platform in Finland. A survey completed by users of the platform allowed for the quantitative analysis of environmental rebound effect experienced by the users and also provide insight into the consumption behaviour that created the most negative consequences. Rebound was experienced by almost all users with almost a third of users experiencing a backfire in which their overall emissions increased as a result of consumption made possible by the economic benefits of shared access. Primary production and the substitution of air travel for the leasing of a boat created large reductions in emissions, however, this was counteracted by increases in personal use and increased air travel by others. This real-life study of environmental rebound effect shows both its existence and impact on the peer-to-peer sharing of boats in Finland.

Patel, Monil Chintan. "Investigation of Single and Two Bolt Connections Perpendicular to Grain in Laminated Veneer Lumber." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44459.

Full text
Abstract:
Bolted connection with perpendicular to grain loading has been considered as a high priority research area by Smith and Foliente (2002), for the advancement of the load resistance factor design (LRFD) of connections. The results obtained from the experimental testing of this research will provide information regarding the behavior of connections at conditions of capacity and yield, and a comparison between single and two bolted connections for laminated veneer lumber (LVL) from different manufacturers. Comparison of the experimental results with the predicted results from three models: Technical Report -12 (AF&PA 1999), Van der Put and Leijten (2000) and Jensen et. al. (2003), for single and two bolt connections loaded perpendicular to grain will help in accurately predicting LVL connection behavior. Success in achieving the goals of this research will provide enhancement of knowledge and information for single and two bolted connections loaded in perpendicular to the grain connections for LVL and thereby help in calibrating LRFD parameters on pure reliability basis in future. The variables considered included LVL from two different manufacturers, single and two bolt connections with different bolt sizes and loaded edge distances. The connections were loaded to capacity for all the tests. Tests for the material property input values required for these models were also performed as a part of this research. Connection testing showed splitting failures combined with crushing of main member material and formation of a single plastic moment. Connection resistance increased with increased loaded edge distance and number of bolts. The allowable shear design value controlled the National Design Specification Allowable Stress Design (NDS ASD) lateral design value to the connection design except for one connection configuration with 7D loaded edge distance for two bolts of ½ inch, where connection design strength values controlled. The displacement limit decided for the dowel bearing strength test had a direct impact on the predicted TR-12 capacity values. The capacity resistance calculated by both fracture models increased with increase in loaded edge distances. The Mode-I fracture energy values directly affected the predicted fracture model values. The tension perpendicular to grain strength values directly affected the Jensen model values. Statistical comparison of 4D and 7D loaded edge distances and LVL-1 and LVL-2 material revealed that Van der Put model had no difference in the calculated to test (C/T) ratios with respect to different loaded edge distances and materials and the Jensen model predicted the C/T ratios at 4D to be significantly greater than at 7D and for LVL-1 to be significantly greater than LVL-2. Van der Put model over predicts at capacity and the C/T values are consistent with change in loaded edge distance. Jensen model C/T ratios over predicted for single bolt connection and predicts accurate for two bolt connection with respect to loaded edge distances. Comparing the two fracture models with a ductile model TR-12 with respect to different loaded edge distances, material, number and size of bolts, Jensen model best predicted the C/T ratios. The Van der Put model tended to over predict values, while the TR-12 model had no consistent trend in C/T ratios, but seemed to be affected inversely by changes in loaded edge distance.

The construction industry has a significant contribution to the countries’ economy development, especially if considered the created jobs amount and the direct influence across the sectors that produce raw materials, equipment and services for use in its production process. In spite of this major highlight of Brazilian civil construction industry in the national economy, the sector is large consumer of natural resources, since the construction uses building materials in large quantity and variety , most often, for lack of planning, are wasted and turned into Construction Waste (CW) The progressive growth of the CW has been in conjunction with an increase in population, and bring with them environmental problems arising from construction growth that in order to attend the expectations of society go hand in hand with this development. the city of Palmas/TO in the past years has experienced an accelerated process of verticalization, accompanied by the generation of a large amount of CW. Regarding to the provisions of this waste in the city and the impacts they cause, this research proposed to diagnose the current situation, based on a theoretical framework of good practices and managing, and classification and quantification of CW generated for a period of one year. This information supported the development of a management guide based on best management and handling practices. The research method is characterized as a qualitative approach, with applied nature, exploratory and descriptive objectives, being used as a working method, bibliographical, documentary research and case study. Data were collected through the application of open questionnaires and interviews with pre-defined script. The main findings are: the lack of supervision and inefficiency of the municipal government; and the lack of environmentally proper management for construction companies, preventing them from having the financial gains from the reuse and recycling of CW. Recommendations for future studies are: the investigation of the effectiveness of ISO 9001 and PBQP-H certifications in construction companies, especially in the city of Palmas; the viability of the technical and environmental point of view of the adoption of the proposed the best management guide, in order to prove its effectiveness as the management of CW, and finally, the application of theoretical framework on field studies.

Abstract:
Interest in the subject emerged from the realization of the Extension Project: \"Aging and quality of life: healthy mind, healthy body\", implemented by this researcher in the Nursing Undergraduate course at a Higher Education Institution in a city in the North of Minas Gerais , where, in one of the lines of work: \"Adherence to the treatment of chronic health conditions and quality of life\", it was possible to perceive that adherence to the treatment of Systemic Hypertension is little handled by nursing professionals and with little understanding of the user. The objective of the present study was to analyze the strategies, considered as good care practices, used by nurses in improving the adherence of the elderly to the treatment of hypertension. This is a descriptive, qualitative study supported by the perspective of integral care, carried out with 11 nurses working in the Basic Care network of the Municipality of Monte Azul, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Data were collected from November 2016 to January 2017 through the application of semi-structured interview audio recorded. The data were transcribed and analyzed using the Thematic Analysis Technique. There signaling by part in the nurses of several actions that can be understood as \"good care practice\" in the perspective of integrality: when they attend elderly bearers of arterial hypertension, regardless of the reason that leads them the Health Unit, and they take into account the fact of being bearers of arterial hypertension, as well as in the valuation and recognition of the work of the Community Health Agent, in the planning of collective actions as a team, in the realization of a shared home visit with other professionals, in the availability to listen to the elderly person at all times that the latter seeks the Health Unit, in the health education actions, risk classification / stratification, in the attendance of spontaneous and programmed demand, in the mutual adjustment in the communication process, among other actions. The evidence of good nursing practices identified indicates that good nursing care practices are constructed and processed in a complex and dynamic scenario that needs to consider elements such as the culture, knowledge, behaviors and attitudes of the elderly and the family. Good practices are supported by scientific evidence, have relation to patient safety and the quality of care provided. Good practices can be strengthened in both thus individual and collective work and be processed per one professional or for the team multi-professional, considering the user\'s health needs, the technologies available in Basic Care network and in the care in of attention. Good practices materialize in the integral assistance to the user and amplify the range of possibilities for nurses to act in the assistance provided in the Health Unit, in the territory and in their contribution in the care network. Therefore, to guide the construction of protocols that address good nursing care practices, it is necessary to fully value the bloke, the team of Basic Care network professionals, the service network and the service\'s resolving capacity.
Today’s world lives in a continuous process of transformation and information diffusion, and the processes of building knowledge and sharing experiences are no longer found only in written manuals, accessible only to the privileged. The Public Power cannot remain indifferent to the use of information as a tool for exercising its functions. In a scenario of strong litigiousness and setting of goals for the judgment of demands, information and profusion of practical knowledge are essential to elevate the position of the Court of Justice of Tocantins in the national scope, with the consequent materialization of access to justice as a human right, fact on which lies the reason for this research. It was attempted, therefore, to answer the question of whether it is possible that the creation of a databank for the dissemination of good practices helps combat untimeliness of justice and favors the fulfillment of human rights. It was aimed to demonstrate that the dissemination of information and good practices contributes to the achievement of a reasonable case length and to the efficiency of jurisdictional provision, in such a way as to propone the creation of a databank for the diffusion of good practices. Specifically, the objective was to show that the delay in jurisdictional provision affects the dignity of the human individual; to demonstrate how internal publicity and the dissemination of good practices are important to improve local jurisdictional provision; to propound the creation of a databank to disseminate good practices, as a means of promoting the effectiveness of jurisdictional provision; and to assist the Court of Justice of Tocantins in the fulfillment of its vision and mission of guaranteeing citizenship through the provision of prompt justice and of being recognized for its modernity, celerity and effectiveness. To do so, this work started from a deductive approach, following the general aspects of the theme until it reached the proposition of creating the databank to disseminate good practices. The data were analyzed in a qualitative way, through the bibliographic or documentary method, based on written materials, such as scientific researches, judgments, law texts, etc. It has been demonstrated that, through administrative solutions, it is possible to improve jurisdictional provision by sharing and propagating information of internal solutions found in the exercise of jurisdiction. Finally, it was concluded that the creation of a databank for the dissemination of good practices does not impose financial burdens on the Court of Justice of Tocantins and that it constitutes an adequate means to contribute to the improvement of jurisdictional provision and materialization of the human right of access to justice.

Abstract:
Up to this point, boats and ships have been treated largely as functional objects. The characteristics of these objects enabled people to engage with the sea in many different ways (see chapter 7), while for those who travelled on these craft particular socio-political processes have been observed (see chapter 8). However, the contextualized study of boats suggests that alongside functional properties, craft also had attributed meanings, as implied for example by the deliberate deposition of the Hjortspring boat in a bog on the island of Als, or by the use of boats in burials at Sutton Hoo, Gokstad, Oseberg and at many other locations around the North Sea. The symbolic significance of ships and boats was the focal point of the 1994 conference ‘The Ship as Symbol in Scandinavian Prehistory and Middle Ages’, which is recognized as a significant departure from existing debates in maritime archaeology. The ideas in this chapter are to an extent developed from the papers in the published proceedings (Crumlin-Pedersen and Thye 1995). The 1994 conference brought together a range of researchers who considered the other-than-functional and other-than-technical aspects of Scandinavian maritime archaeology. Symbols are understood to be semantically opaque representations producing semiotic systems in society (cf. Kobyliński 1995: 10–1). The use of the ship as a symbol is unsurprising. Much of the early maritime archaeology of Scandinavia is known to us not from wrecks that sank to the sea bed during storms, but from boat burials, and other deliberate depositions of boats in non-maritime contexts such as bogs, as well as from the carved and etched boat images on rocks and bronzes. The contexts of the boats imply that these carried meanings beyond their operational use, functioning therefore as signs and acting as symbols. The role of boats in the Sagas has advanced the notion that ships in the Viking period were more than simply craft to cross the sea with. Kobyliński (ibid. 15) makes the point that the extensive use of boats and ships as symbols in Scandinavia is linked to beliefs that the world of the dead is across the water, be that hell across the Gjoll River or Valhalla across the Thund River.

Abstract:
The Central Disaster Management Council of the Cabinet Office predicts that an earthquake of magnitude 7 will occur in Metropolitan Tokyo and the Tokai area within 30 years. In preparation for such large-scale earthquakes, the government is considering various measures. In this study, we focus on the ‘Umi no eki (Sea Station)’ system developed by the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and propose a manual for ‘relief goods transportation’ and ‘stranded-commuter transportation’ using pleasure boats. Since it is important to determine whether pleasure boat owners are willing to voluntarily participate in relief activities at the Umi no eki, we also conducted a survey among pleasure boat owners concerning their awareness of disaster management. As a result, we found that pleasure boat owners are highly willing to participate. This study clarified the restrictions on volunteer activities carried out by pleasure boat owners, and a disaster management manual for pleasure boats was prepared with the objective of constructing a rescue system using pleasure boats in Tokyo Bay.

Abstract:
The trade and skills of wooden boatbuilding began to die with the development of fiberglass reinforced plastic boats, and long before 1992 wooden boatbuilding was considered a dead industry. Still, the building of a wooden boat was something that could catch a child's attention; to build and sail a boat of one's own could be a consuming project that would set a pattern for life. In 1990 a program began to build on this premise: to reach out to the troubled youth of the inner cities, teach useable skills, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment by teaching youths to build small wooden boats, then teaching them to sail the boats that they built.

Abstract:
There is a multitude of seagoing missions such as rescue missions, coast guard and pilot duties, whose success depend on ship-deployed boats. Launching these boats from a mother ship or recovering them by special deployment systems in a broad range of environmental conditions are key operations for a successive mission. In recent years, new boat deployment systems, promising better operational availability at high sea states, have evolved beyond the traditional side-davit system with dual falls. These new systems deploy their boats via stern ramps integrated into the transom of the mother ship, for example seen at numerous rescue cruisers around the world. This paper presents two different boat deployment systems. After a short discussion of the disadvantages of side-davit systems, a new type of a stern boat deployment device, the so called Janssen Docking System [1], is introduced. This system is equipped with an articulated ramp hinged to the stern. Whereas launching operations are less critical, the recovery of boats is quite hazardous. For this operation mode structural forces on critical areas as well as the relative motions between the ramp and the small boat are systematically investigated in model tests. Based on the results of these sea keeping tests the feasibility of the system has been analysed and improvements are recommended. As a second system a floodable dock integrated into a mother ship is presented. For launching and recovering small boats at high seas the swell inside the dock and the resulting relative motions between boat and dock ship are investigated. This leads to critical flow conditions inside the harbour in terms of sloshing waves with heights up to 3 meters. The analysis of local flow phenomena inside the dock dependent on the motion of the ship in a given sea state are the basis for the development of an optimized dock shape. Therefore an existing nonlinear numerical method for unsteady viscous computation based on Volume of Fluid (VOF) methods and Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes Equations (RANSE) is used to simulate these phenomena. The time domain calculation allows to change local dock shapes systematically for further improvements. To validate the numerical solution the calculated results are compared to sea keeping tests at model scale. The paper concludes with a perspective for the further development of the dock shape.

Abstract:
The powering requirement of a ship is one of the most important aspects of naval architecture. Traditionally, ships have been tested for hull resistance using hydrodynamic tank testing. But it is very time consuming, expensive, and has inherent scaling errors. Because of these reasons, today many vessels are sold on the market without any model testing. Another set of design tools are Computational Fluid Dynamics and parametric prediction. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes are not yet wholly proven in its accuracy. Parametric predictions contain acquired data for a specific family of hull forms and use key hull parameters to evaluate a particular design. This tool is absolutely validating. In this work, parametric predictions tool has been used for velocity prediction of sailing boats and experimental equation has been used for hydrodynamic and aerodynamic calculation. However in this work from experimental equation from Delft towing tank has been used for hydrodynamic calculation but it is acceptable for more boats and ships. In this work velocity is predicted for a sailing boat with one rigid airfoil and sailing boat with cloth sailing. Rigid airfoil can control the velocity of boat. The maximum velocity occurred in 70 to 120 degree angle of courses. In Final stage, the velocity of boat is compared between sailing boat with rigid airfoil and cloth sail.

Abstract:
Seakeeping performance of a planing boat should be sufficiently considered and evaluated at the design stage for its safe running in rough seas. Model tests in seakeeping model basins are often performed to predict the performance of full-scale planing boats. But, there are many limitations of tank size and wave maker capacity, in particular, for fast small planing boats due to small scale ratio and high Froude numbers of their scale models. In this research, scale model tests are tried in various test conditions, and results are summarized and analyzed to predict a 3 ton-class fast small planing boats designed. In a long and narrow tank, towing tests for a bare hull model are performed with regular head waves and long crested irregular head waves. Motion RAOs are derived from irregular wave tests, and they are in good agreements with RAOs in regular waves. Next, model ships with one water-jet propulsion system are built, and free running model tests are performed in ocean basins. Wave conditions such as significant heights, modal periods, and directions are varied for the free running tests. Motion RMS values, and RAOs are obtained through statistical approaches. They are compared with the results in captive tests for the bare hull model, and are used to predict the full-scale boat performances.

Abstract:
The question, "What is the best tacking procedure?", has challenged sailors for a long time. In order to answer this question, it might be best to clarify the mechanism of tacking motions of sailing boats theoretically. However, tacking is a complicated maneuvering motion. Many factors affect tacking, including maneuverability, rolling characteristics, sail performance, etc. The first step to tackle this problem, therefore, is to make a proper model which represents tacking motions. In the present paper, two models are proposed to represent the tacking motions of sail boats. One is a mathematical model and another is a neural network model. In the mathematical model, the tacking motion of the boat is described by partial differential equations with the coordinate system using the horizontal body axes. The hydrodynamic derivatives of the equations are mainly given by model test results and/or full scale measurements. Such coefficients as added mass and added moment of inertia are calculated using the strip method. These equations are integrated using an integration method. In the neural network model, on the other hand, the tacking motion of the boat is regarded as a neural network system consisting of several layers. In the present paper, two hidden layers are used besides the input and output layers. The network constants are tuned using back-propagation procedure. If the rudder angle is inputted, the boat motion can be obtained step by step using the network. Comparing the results obtained by these two methods with the full-scale experiments of a sailing boat, the merit and the demerit of these models are discussed.

Abstract:
Observations by crew of high-speed planing boats and sea trial tests have indicated that high-speed planing hulls suffer poor longitudinal and transverse instabilities, and boat may experience unfavorable motions due to any small environmental excitation. In this regard, dynamic motions of planing boats have been investigated over the last thirty years, during which innovative linear and nonlinear methods have been developed .In these studies, different method s have been developed by various authors to determine forces and moments acting on the hull. However, majority of investigators have focused on vertical motions of planning boats in waves (such as Zarnick [1978], Hicks and Troesch [1994] etc.) and few researchers have only attempted to model motions in transverse and horizontal planes including sway, yaw and roll motions. Furthermore, most of researches dealing with transverse and horizontal planning motions, were experimentally conducted (such as Judge [2010], Morabito et al [2014] etc). There exist only few articles, in which mathematical models for transverse motion have been developed. Therefore, it is needed to develop as implemathematical models for prediction of transverse motions of planing boats for use in conceptual design phase. During the last five years, there has been an increased interesting study of transverse motions, and in the current paper, an attempt has been made for a mathematical study of roll motion of planning hulls.

Abstract:
Leisure boats market has constantly grown during the recent years, entailing an increasing need of design tools. This seems particularly urgent for seakeeping and hydrodynamic performance prediction in the field of planing boats. Numerical methodologies are almost consolidated instruments for conventional displacement ships, while some shortcomings are still to be faced and overcome concerning planing craft, due to the high complexity of the hydrodynamic problem. The present paper describes a simplified methodology for the prediction of pitch, heave and roll motions of a planing boat, in regular and irregular waves. In the formulation, a 2D approach is adopted, based on ‘momentum theory’; various aspects of the wedge-theory are used in order to model the sectional characteristics, with particular attention to the added mass. A validation of the proposed methodology concerning vertical motions is presented against data available in literature.

Abstract:
In order to simulate the bottom trawl fishery in Ise Bay, a typical semi-enclosed bay in Japan, a fishery simulator has been developed that consists of a fish behavioral model and a fishing operations model. The fish behavioral models are developed for two major target species, conger eel and mantis shrimp, which consider the fish migration as well as the growth and the population change. The fish behavioral models are combined with a fishing operation model, which predicts the behavior of trawling boats based on economic conditions and resource distribution as well as the fish catch amount by each boat. The model is applied to evaluate the effects of fishery management, and it is investigated that how the control of fishing efforts or number of owned fishing boats affects the profit of the target fishery. The mesh size of the trawling net which maximizes the total catch is estimated considering both conger eel and mantis shrimp. At the target ports, reduction of boats number will increase the profit because the effect of fixed cost change exceeds the impact of fish catch decrease. However, the optimum reduction rate is different in each port and interactive effect should be also considered.

Abstract:
In the U.S. Navy, high speed boat (HSB) crewman frequently suffer from lower back pain and accelerated intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. It is believed that this stems primarily from the large vertical accelerations and forces experienced while navigating on the open seas as the boats pitch and crash into the water. In a study of self-reported injuries for HSB operators, 33.6% of these subjects had suffered a lower back injury while on duty3. This is high when compared with the 15 to 20% of adults in the general population who experience low back pain.

Abstract:
Abundant gull populations in North America have led to a variety of conflicts with people. Gulls cause damage at aquaculture facilities and other properties, and often collide with aircraft. Their use of structures on and near water results in excessive amounts of bird droppings on boats and docks. Their presence near outdoor dining establishments, swimming beaches, and recreational sites can lead to negative interactions with people. Large amounts of gull fecal material pollutes water and beaches resulting in drinking water contamination and swim bans. A combination of dispersal techniques, exclusion and limited lethal control may reduce damage to an acceptable level. Gulls are classified as a migratory bird species and are protected by federal and, in most cases, state laws. In the United States, gulls may be taken only with a permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Occasionally, an additional permit is required from the state wildlife management agency.
