Martin, Denis-Constant. Sounding the Cape: Music, Identity and Politics in South Africa. African Minds, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.47622/978-1-920489-82-3.

Abstract:
For several centuries Cape Town has accommodated a great variety of musical genres which have usually been associated with specific population groups living in and around the city. Musical styles and genres produced in Cape Town have therefore been assigned an ìidentityî which is first and foremost social. This volume tries to question the relationship established between musical styles and genres, and social --in this case pseudo-racial --identities. In Sounding the Cape, Denis-Constant Martin recomposes and examines through the theoretical prism of creolisation the history of music in Cape Town, deploying analytical tools borrowed from the most recent studies of identity configurations. He demonstrates that musical creation in the Mother City, and in South Africa, has always been nurtured by contacts, exchanges and innovations whatever the efforts made by racist powers to separate and divide people according to their origin. Musicians interviewed at the dawn of the 21st century confirm that mixture and blending characterise all Cape Town's musics. They also emphasise the importance of a rhythmic pattern particular to Cape Town, the ghoema beat, whose origins are obviously mixed. The study of music demonstrates that the history of Cape Town, and of South Africa as a whole, undeniably fostered creole societies. Yet, twenty years after the collapse of apartheid, these societies are still divided along lines that combine economic factors and 'racial'categorisations. Martin concludes that, were music given a greater importance in educational and cultural policies, it could contribute to fighting these divisions and promote the notion of a nation that, in spite of the violence of racism and apartheid, has managed to invent a unique common culture.

Abstract:
This chapter examines marketing as the foundation of personhood for market women, their families, and Chamelco as a whole. Chamelco's vendors confront capitalist values, transforming capitalism's potentially alienating social effects into a model of Q'eqchi' identity for all. Although they participate in capitalist exchanges, they do so not simply for financial motives, but because marketing is an ancient occupation central to the town's historical identity. As vendors, Chamelco's women use exchange to define the logics of the Q'eqchi' house (junkab'al), the primary entity through which Chamelqueños define and live personhood. The chapter also sets out the book's purpose, which is to explore the intersections of kinship, global capitalism, indigenous identity, and memory.

Slocum, Karla. Black Towns, Black Futures. University of North Carolina Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5149/northcarolina/9781469653976.001.0001.

Abstract:
Some know Oklahoma’s Black towns as historic communities that thrived during the Jim Crow era—this is only part of the story. In this book, Karla Slocum shows that the appeal of these towns is more than their past. Drawing on interviews and observations of town life spanning several years, Slocum reveals that people from diverse backgrounds are still attracted to the communities because of the towns’ remarkable history as well as their racial identity and rurality. But that attraction cuts both ways. Tourists visit to see living examples of Black success in America, while informal predatory lenders flock to exploit the rural Black economies. In Black towns, there are developers, return migrants, rodeo spectators, and gentrifiers, too. Giving us a complex window into Black town and rural life, Slocum ultimately makes the case that these communities are places for affirming, building, and dreaming of Black community success even as they contend with the sometimes marginality of Black and rural America.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the structure of local administration in the Roman Empire and the responsibilities of the various local magistrates, the town council and the public assembly. It explores the responsibilities of the magistrates with regard to jurisdiction, public finance, and the management of public property, and the question whether holding a magistracy became less popular over time. It also discusses the connection between central government and the towns of the Empire, and the involvement of central officials in the running of towns. Finally, this chapter explores the legal position and responsibilities of resident foreigners, as well as the importance of the connection to a hometown for feelings of personal identity and pride among the Empire’s inhabitants.
