Abstract:
Abstract - Cities change by time to time physically and non-physically. The city development produces a distinctive character even in the smallest urban creature. This distinctive character does not take quickly but is slowly and full of challenges. Townscape is a visual impression of buildings arrangement, roads, and spaces those are expressed organically to form urban spaces. Therefore, a townscape that exists in an urban area is created on delevlopment or grows by unintentionally. Apart from that, the character of a townscape from one place is different from the other. The townscapes had been created and specific in each place. The literatures for this research are: 'The Concise Townscape', 'The Aesthetic Townscape', and 'Road Form and Townscape'. The three literatures describe the existence of townscape in Europe and Japan. This is the basic knowledge in townscape and how it is applied in Indonesia, especially in the city of Yogyakarta. The urban space chosen in this research is Padukuhan Samirono. Padukuhan Samirono is located in the north of Yogyakarta City and is very close to Gadjah Mada University and Negri Yogyakarta University. Padukuhan Samirono is known as an area that provides student accomodation. The community still stand fot maintaining their cultural habit such as gathering, cultural performances, and parades. This study examines the Townscape in Padukuhan Samirono. The social and cultural activities expressed their locality as seen as in its townscape. The pictorial analysis method identify the elements of townscapes wich effects the urban space. By describing the elements of urban space with 7 factors: nature elements, space organization, mass, proportion, activity, carving, and streetscape, the local expression criteria of Padukuhan Samirono’s can be formulated. Based on observations, the local expression of townscape on Samirono changes into a modern form. This research attempts to enhance people’s aprrectiation about townscape, especially townscape in Indonesia. Key Words: townscape, pictorial analysis, Samirono, Javanese, locality

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the state of decline in the art of relationship between the urban river and all other elements in the historic townscape using principles of the Integrative Theory with the purpose to identify what binds townscape together and gives its sense of place and what causes the rupture. A qualitative-method case study was conducted in the Masjid India Riverfront District involving a visual survey, townscape appraisal, and content analysis on the morphology of the historic riverfront. The results show that the rupture between townscape and river as context is a product of poor walkability in a riverfront devoid of any setting for meaningful human activities, and the key to reweave the historic townscape is to rediscover what gives its meaning and sense of place.

Abstract:
Why are archaeologists ‘missing’ the poor in Late Roman towns? This paper suggest that we are looking in the wrong place, and need to concentrate on areas of the townscape beyond its monumental centre; that we are looking in the wrong way, and need to develop more sophisticated methodologies in both gathering and analysing data; and that we are seeing our evidence through inappropriate interpretative frameworks. To remedy this last state of affairs, we must develop Marxist approaches defining different modes of production, and then apply them to the analysis of townscapes and landscapes, and to artefact and ecofact assemblages.

Abstract:
Townscapes created by authoritarian planning present particular challenges in subsequent periods of laissez-faire development. Largely the product of the visions of Prussian monarchs in the eighteenth century, what was to become the town centre of Potsdam was created according to internationally fashionable baroque precepts. In the later nineteenth century and early twentieth century its buildings were subjected to pressures for piecemeal change to accommodate new commercial functions and a rapidly growing population. As the grip of royal control slackened, the primary initiators of change were owner occupiers employing local builders. By the time legislation protecting the appearance of the town centre had been passed in 1923, practically all the houses had been modified, and a less harmonious townscape had been created. Consideration of changing attitudes over time contributes to an understanding of changes to historic townscapes, and can inform their future management.

Abstract. This study intends to develop a method of learning changes in the Kyoto townscape. We conducted an experiment using the Kyoto Memorygraph with old photographs from the Kyoto City Tram and Bus Photograph Database. The key findings of this paper are the following:

Users can easily understand the details of changes in the townscape when comparing old photographs with the current townscape using Kyoto Memorygraph.

By using this application in tours, users who were not previously familiar with the locations and characteristics of old photographs exhibited notable learning outcomes.

In this experiment, participants focused on mountains as a distant marker and buildings, roads, and objects on the roadside as proximate markers. These are the basic components of the city; participants examined the structure and elements from the old photos and became aware of changes in the townscape. In the case that the characteristics of the photo had changed significantly, some participants felt it was difficult to match old photos with the current townscape. By visiting the location where the old picture was taken and capturing the current cityscape, users of Kyoto Memorygraph were able to consider the city’s structure and elements. These results indicate that Kyoto Memorygraph can be a regional learning tool for understanding townscape development.

Abstract:
Intellectual ideological transformations affect the formation of the townscape, which in turn affects the narratives of the townscape constantly, as cities undergo various transformations, including natural and sudden forced ones, through economic and social processes; accompanied by structural changes in its urban scenes to a different formal model, reflecting the spirit of the age. The townscape is the reflective text that highlights the city in the form of a serial vision and scenes that carry the effects of the past and simulate the era, where the townscape is basically built through successive visions. The research deals with the difference in the concept of intellectual ideals from the Renaissance era based on perspective and artistic concepts to technology-based aesthetics in the international style, as this led to a change in the integrated coherent scene (the traditional scene) to the technology-based scene (the technological scene), and the latest discontinuity in the narrative of the story line. The landscape in urban city centers has both intellectual and physical levels. The discontinuity occurs in the townscape at the intellectual and material levels, when the concept of aesthetics and ideals varies in different periods of time. The research aims to study the impact of the entry of different intellectual trends (ideals of each era) on the townscape, in Al-Rasheed Street in Baghdad, during different periods of time. And reading the state of interruption in the scene and its impact on the perception of the recipient.

Abstract:
Urbanism and its associated architecture not only takes place in designated city areas but also in the Realm of the Middle Landscape. Although it is hardly possible to invent a new architecture, the necessity remains to think about questions of urbanism and its built structures in the context of history, technology and sociology. One interpretation which challenges the current urban development, such as the issue of the sprawl of mid size towns, has the potential to direct planning tools and clarify intentions towards a more differentiated strategy of orientation. This approach to design opens the possibility to develop a higher level of sophistication by articulating building elements within classical parameters such as proportion, geometry and composition. The filtering into a modern context which includes the knowledge of attributes of contemporary materials and technology will facilitate the process of transfer.

Abstract:
In June 1955, the English periodical The Architectural Review published a special edition called Outrage by young critic Ian Douglas Nairn (1930-1983), which had a profound impact on the post-war reconstruction debate. This dissertation analyzes Ian Nairn\'s professional and intellectual trajectory, and his involvement with a model of environmental intervention and urban design methodology articulated by the Architectural Review beginning in 1947 and known under the rubric of Townscape. By exploring the historical and cultural context of post-war Great Britain, as well as the specific cultural climate within the Review, this study aims to assess Nairn\'s largely forgotten contribution in promoting Townscape ideals both in Great Britain and abroad. It also aims to demonstrate how these ideals determined his vision and were present not only in his work at the Review but also across a wide range of media. In addition, we also assert that Nairn added his own unique signature, which was key to the increasing visibility of Townscape ideals and therefore to their dissemination.

Khalifehei, Hassan. "Social sustainability and the future in the Iranian historic neighbourhoods' townscape." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6688/.

Abstract:
Historic urban quarters are part of the human environment. They embody all the evidence of past human activity within a specific region of a city. They are the centres of the social, economic and cultural life of the town and they are also the main constituent of a city's character. In most Iranian cities there still exist many historic neighbourhoods. Unfortunately, the only ones that are successful are commercial like the bazaars or the many ancient buildings and monuments, while the old residential quarters are mostly in decline and have few prospects of a sustainable future. With the modernization of the city and the transformation of its social life, the historic quarters were the first places to be affected by a change of lifestyle. These days, many are in a precarious position, the main problem being their physical layout, with narrow streets and many impasses. Before the advent of the car, these were perfectly adequate for the passage of humans and animals. Sadly, this is no longer the case and there is fierce competition for space between pedestrians and motor vehicles. Generally speaking, in most of the old quarters of Iranian cities, because of the profusion of run-down houses and the lack of social infrastructure, the younger generation is abandoning these areas. So, nowadays, the residents are mostly old people and low-income families who cannot afford to rent or live in better sectors with higher rents. Moreover, this low-maintenance townscape creates an unpleasant image and character for Iranian historic neighbourhoods. However, some of these neighbourhoods still possess many of the positive features that are necessary for social sustainability, such as a proper identity, a human-scale pattern, density, permeability of pedestrian movement and a hierarchy between private and public space. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of evidence of a decline in the social functions of Iranian antique quarters; thus, this study focuses on their social sustainability.

Jongens, Nicoline. "Declaring urban conservation areas: the Art Deco townscape of Vredehoek, Cape Town." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27344.

Full text
Abstract:
The research question posed in this study asks what qualities, characteristics and cultural significance need to be embodied within an urban environment that make the area worthy of conservation-oriented protection through laws and policies. The research question was explored through an assessment of the townscape of Vredehoek, an informally(1) proposed conservation area in Cape Town where there is a relatively high concentration of Art Deco buildings. The selection of Vredehoek as a laboratory within which to ask this question is due to the presence of contested opinions amongst various stakeholders and heritage-claimants about the cultural significance embodied within the built fabric of this place. This study aimed to identify what elements of the built environment of Vredehoek are of special interest, what qualities and characteristics these elements of special interest embody, to understand and articulate the values that inform these qualities, and to identify to whom these elements are valuable and why. Criteria were established with which to determine whether the identified qualities and values are special enough that when synthesised, the resultant significance of the place warrants protection through heritage area designation. The criteria developed with which to assess and evaluate proposed urban conservation areas, including Vredehoek, require that such environments need to embody cultural significance and characteristics informed by an urban history reflected in its authentic manifestations developed over time through continuity of use with a high townscape quality established primarily through the aesthetic unity of its component parts. Through historical research, the studying, mapping and analysis of the area's urban morphology, built environment and natural landscape, and the identification and evaluation of values held by heritage-claimants and views held by those critical of Vredehoek's proposed designation, evidence regarding the conservation-worthiness of Vredehoek has been assembled and assessed within the framework of criteria developed to evaluate heritage area designation. It has been found that the environment of Vredehoek does not embody high townscape quality nor does a strong aesthetic unity of its components exist. Furthermore, the area is not a richly layered environment reflecting continuity of use, the existence of cultural significance within the place is limited to a relatively small part of the townscape - a collection of Art Deco buildings demonstrating a moderate degree of architectural merit. Thus the environment of Vredehoek does not meet the criteria required for heritage area conservation.

Abstract:
Rapid urbanization, which is one of the major problems of contemporary era, created cities as the major destroying centers of nature and ecology by human beings. In this respect, urban agriculture takes place in urban areas as a new way to meet nature and urban for improving the quality of life in the last decades. Despite the belief that agricultural activities always take place in rural areas, agriculture in urban areas would provide citizens many opportunities in terms of social, economic and environmental aspects. This study aims to identify the notions of urban agriculture, and to investigate its economic, social and environmental impacts by exemplifying the different practices around world. It focuses on Black Sea Towns of Turkey in the case of Rize where agriculture is occupied in important parts of urban and rural areas. Unique features of agriculture in urban areas as they differ from other implementations in the world are examined. In this thesis, UA is considered as socio-economic and townscape value in the city. In the case of Rize, urban agriculture appears as an indispensable part of social life that bears the imprint of rural background of the cities.

Abstract:
The difference between socio-economic systems is an important factor in the diversity of urban form. M. R. G. Conzen (1960) established a framework for urban morphology in the context of a British social system and culture. It was suggested that this did not necessarily apply to cities affected by revolutionary planning measures. China, which is markedly different in social system and culture from Britain by most standards qualifies as revolutionary, at least in the post-war period. Sanlitun in Beijing, China, is an interesting case for comparison with British cities. It was a site containing few buildings during the initial stage of new China, but subsequently became the ‘Second Embassy District’ where many embassies gathered. Now it has become a commercial core district and cultural meeting place of Westerners and Chinese. The townscape of Sanlitun, which has experienced a number of socialist construction periods reveals the process of changing urban form under a socialist system. Identifying morphological periods, the changing process of townscape development in Sanlitun is articulated. Morphological units are delimited. They clarify the variations in Sanlitun’s landscapes and their formation. Based on these, this paper reflects on the shaping process of townscape under different socio-cultural systems, and further considers the universality, applicability and particularities of Conzenian theory.
