Full textParticipatory action research (PAR) is used in public health to better understand complex health and social issues and to find appropriate solutions. In addition, the participation of marginalized people in PAR has proven to be highly relevant in gaining access to their experiential knowledge about the issues at stake. In turn, PAR allows their voices to be heard and empowers them to act to improve their situation as well as the interventions that affect them. The participation of people who use drugs, who are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, has become an international imperative for an ethical and effective response to the epidemic. However, few studies have dealt with their ownership of the participation process. Moreover, given the numerous meanings of PAR, the diversity of its epistemic orientations and methodologies, including artistic techniques, as well as the extent of participation from one study to another, it is difficult to assess its real potential. As a result, many doubt its credibility and the scientific value of the knowledge it produces. This thesis was therefore conducted to examine how the appropriation of the participation process in a PAR with people who use drugs can contribute to the construction and mobilization of valid knowledge. In the context of the fight against sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, this doctoral project was linked to a PAR developed through a partnership between community organizations, academics as well as public health institutions, in Montreal and Quebec City. In 2011 and 2012, the doctoral student worked as a research assistant for the committee conducting this PAR composed of six people who use drugs and a community organizer from the Point de Repères grass roots organization in Quebec City. Using a creative artistic approach, the committee collected verbal and visual data with the objective of making visible the community actions of Point de Repères as well as the social action of participants in the organization's activities. A longitudinal qualitative study on the appropriation of the participation process by the members of this committee was thus realized. The particularity of this thesis was to position the student-researcher as a participant in her own research, therefore as a part of her object of study. The objectives of the thesis were to examine the committee’s ownership of the partnership intentions and strategies; to identify its achievements; to document the reflective feedback of its members; and to establish the progression of the process. An interactional analysis was carried out on a series of audio recordings of the committee meetings as well on individual interviews held at the end of the PAR with the six persons who used drugs. A conceptual framework was developed for the analysis, using mainly the Rubicon Model of action phases (Achtzeger et Gollwitzer, 2008). This study reveals that the committee has authentically embraced this space for discussion, reflection, decision and action. Even without having full decision-making power, its members were actively involved in developing the PAR methodology, building knowledge and preparing for mobilization. Thanks to the trust established over a long period of time between Point de Repères, the Quebec City researchers and people who use drugs, the committee was able to apply several methodological criteria of qualitative research and others more specific to PAR. The committee has thus built knowledge that is valid from a scientific, relational and personal point of view. As a contribution to the advancement of knowledge, this thesis describes in detail the dynamics and processes of the participatory dimension of a specific PAR: partnership and transformational dynamics, group dynamics, knowledge construction and mobilization processes, creation processes and reflexivity processes. By showing the value and richness of the knowledge of people who use drugs, it contributes to increase the credibility of PAR. Finally, it allows to deconstruct certain prejudices against the people who use drugs according to which they would be unable to comply with the requirements of a PAR.

Prison-based substance abuse treatment groups provide a specific context for intervention. Although several studies address their effectiveness, the group processes of these groups have been little explored in scientific literature. It became relevant to undertake this research, which attempts to capture the experience of men who participate in a psychoeducational group as part of the Toxico-Justice, a prison-based program. Based on symbolic interactionism, the study uses semi-directive interviews to develop a subjective picture of group experience and the role of interactions in this experience. The sample consisted of ten men who completed the Toxico-Justice program for less than one year at the time of the interview. Results highlighted the presence of eight therapeutic factors within the group: information sharing, self-understanding, cohesion, universality, altruism, catharsis, self-disclosure and interpersonal learning. The presence of these therapeutic factors has been moderated by some difficulties encountered in the interactions between the members of the group. The open group context as well as the prison context are among the factors that would have made interactions between group members more difficult. Nevertheless, the results show that participants met the group's objective of deepening their reflection on their using habits and reducing their risk of recidivism in relation to delinquent behaviors associated with drug addiction. Different avenues are explored in order to reduce the impact of the difficulties encountered in the participants' experience.

Full textThe objective of this thesis was to better understand the recent appearance of a significant association between sex work and HIV incidence in surveillance data among injection drug users (IDUs) in Quebec and Ottawa. The characteristics and behaviours were compared based on sexual activity reported for the last six months, separated into three categories: sexually inactive participants, sexually active participants reporting client sexual partners and sexually active participants not reporting client partners. Sexually inactive IDUs had a higher HIV incidence rate, likely due to more profound dependence leading to increased vulnerability. At the other end of the spectrum of sexual activity, sex work was independently associated with HIV incidence among IDUs. Further studies are needed to understand whether this association is related to sexual transmission or other vulnerability factors.

Full textThis research focuses on adolescents' adaptation when living with a parent who has mental illness. A first objective was to explore the positive and negative impacts of living with parental mental illness. A second objective was to examine their coping skills as well as their perception of the efficiency of theses coping skills. Qualitative method has been chosen to pursue these goals and relies on Lazarus and Folkman transactional stress theory. Five adolescents have been met in a semi-structured interview. They also filled a questionnaire on coping skills, the Kidcope. The themes were the social, scholar and familial functioning of these adolescents. They also discussed the parental mental illness, their perception of the impacts on their life and the learning they did through their experience.

Full textThis thesis aims to study the relationship between disabilities and subjective employability expectations. We first establish a theoretical framework with an investigation of relevant concepts and a comprehensive literature review. We then present the DEPPI’s survey of subjective employment expectations which collects the ex-ante perceptions of people with a disability concerning their short-term future. Based on theoretical models, we estimate ordinary least squares multiple linear regressions of raw subjective expectations and those calculated using a flexible approximation with SplineBBK. This thesis contributes to the DEPPI which is a five-year project aimed at offering public policy solutions to foster the employment of people with disabilities. The results presented relate to the first year of data collection during which we interviewed 94 people with disabilities. The main results suggest that people with disabilities have pessimistic subjective employability expectations. Overall, visual disabilities seem to be linked to lower expectations. In contrast, episodic disabilities are linked to better subjective employability expectations. An episodic disability significantly decreases the uncertainty as to the anticipated expected salary. Men seem to have more optimistic expectations than women. The results confirm that subjective expectations data are useful for economic models. This thesis contributes to the literature that uses subjective expectations data. The aim is to analyze the effect of various disabilities. The theoretical framework lays the foundation for future research using subjective employability expectations data.

Full textThis paper explores the enabling factors as well as challenges students may face in relation to the development of their personal sense of self-efficacy in the context of pedagogical supervision, as part of their initial training in social work at the baccalaureate level. A qualitative methodology was used through semi-structured interviews with six (6) participants. The results indicate that trust plays a decisive role in developing a sense of self-efficacy. The clarification of professional roles, the creation of a space for genuine dialogue, without judgment and shaped as a reflective practice between the supervisor and the supervised student, as well as a coaching approach, suited to the needs of this dyad, are elements that promote the development of a sense of self-efficacy.

Full textThis doctoral research aims to document the perceptions of students with emotional and behavioral difficulties (EBD) regarding the effectiveness of classroom management practices used by teachers and to contrast them according to their personal characteristics and behavioral profiles. It also aims to describe the perceived influence of classroom management practices on the educational experience of these students and to document their perceptions regarding accessibility to the regular class and the issues relating to their reintegration into mainstream secondary school. Individual interviews were conducted with fourteen EBD students enrolled in special education classes in secondary school in Quebec. The participants' testimonies were subjected to thematic analyzes by predefined categorization from the theoretical models selected. The results offers an unprecedented perspective on classroom management and reveal a vast inventory of practices perceived effective by participants to manage the class, including: 1) resource management: arranging different spaces, assigning places, using proprioceptive objects; 2) establishing clear expectations: establishing classroom rules with the students, transmitting precise instructions, having routines; 3) developing positive relationships: having respectful and supportive relationships, understanding and listening without judging, letting yourself be known; 4) obtaining attention and maintaining commitment: helping students, giving them a taste for doing tasks, being silent before starting and 5) managing misconduct: reinforcing, warning, announce the consequences, use classroom withdrawal in an educational manner. The results also reveal that the type of school attended and the attitudes towards it particularly influence participants' perceptions. Subsequently, the results show that classroom management practices are a significant determinant of the participants' educational experience. In this regard, practices aimed at developing positive relationships are those that most positively influence the school experience while those aimed at punishing and excluding are those that influence it most negatively. In addition, the way teachers manage their class is associated with the way students choose to behave, as well as their academic background, performance and well-being at school. Finally, the results provide a better understanding of participants' perceptions of the mainstream classroom and its accessibility. In this regard, they demonstrate their intention and their ability to return to the regular class and identify several personal, environmental and behavioral issues, as they see and experience them. Innovative on a social and scientific level, this thesis adds a major dimension to our understanding of effective classroom management practices, their influence on the school experience and issues related to the reintegration of EBD students into mainstream education. It offers, on the one hand, an alternative point of view to teachers (and other school staff) and, on the other hand, a perspective complementary to previous research in the field. Thus, the vast inventory of classroom management practices perceived effective by EBD students will track teachers on the practices to favor in order to face the daily challenge of classroom management by convincing them of the importance of using those recommended by students. In addition, the many levers and barriers to reintegration identified by EBD students will have to be taken into account in order to promote their full participation and their optimal development in ordinary classroom. Finally, the voice of EBD students has the real potential to contribute to the enhancement of their mainstream education, to the improvement of their experience at school, to the identification of the factors that affect their well-being and their success as well as educating teachers about effective practices to manage the classroom and difficult behaviors.

Full textSexual education (SE) research conducted at the turn of the 21st century in Quebec and elsewhere in the West, shows that a particular attention has been devoted to the prevention of sexually-related social problems of “at risk” populations. Women and girls are at the heart of the concerns. On the one hand, SE interventions tend to give greater responsibility to girls in the “management” of their sexuality, and on the other, the central role played by women (mothers, practitioners) in SE is largely demonstrated. What do women think of SE and what are their experiences of transmission and appropriation of sexual knowledge? This interdisciplinary thesis, essentially qualitative and grounded on a constructivist and feminist (standpoint theory) epistemology, is about the social representations (SR) of teenage SE in Quebec at the turn of the 21st century, in the context of the school reform which led to the withdrawal of the official SE school program. Thirty women members of six interest groups concerned by issues related to sexuality (M = 39.9 y.o.), as well as 10 mothers (M = 49.2 y.o.) and 10 daughters (M = 19.4 y.o.), for a total sample of 50 participants, respectively participated in focus groups and individual semi-directed interviews. All the participants also responded to a word association task. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of content showed that the RS of SE organized themselves around eight agents (school, family, other practitioners, youth, peers, media, Church, State), and six dimensions (didactical, reproductive/sociosanitary, sexual, affective/relational, axiological/ethical, social/psychosociological). Some convergences and divergences between the interest groups and the mothers and the daughters were observed. Results from the qualitative analysis, supported by a factorial correspondence analysis, highlighted two principles which organized the participants’ positions towards the content of the SR: one axis of sexual freedom versus of sexual control, and one axis which implied a social/political vision of sexuality versus an individual/private vision of sexuality. Twelve anchoring variables of the participants’ positions were found; six of sociological type, six of psychological/psychosociological type. Recommendations for research and intervention are presented.

Full textThis research tries to determine if Quebec City’s youth can be considered cosmopolitan. It draws upon the content analysis of 169 open-answers questionnaires, completed by students aged 18 to 23, between November 2012 and January 2013. Examining their relation to cultural diversity, their relation to politics and exploring the different categories from which they build their identity, it comes to the conclusion that the growing ethnocultural diversity that characterize Quebec’s urban landscape and its inscription in a global society are phenomena that are experienced rather passively by today’s youth. These phenomena do not generate greater enthusiasm for intercultural encounters nor do they lead to the adoption of moral dispositions usually associated with cosmopolitanism. On the contrary, results show that young people in Quebec are more concerned with issues that are local in scale and they express their preoccupations with the protection and valorization of what they refer to as their cultural heritage, in response to globalization.
Gilbert, Emilie.

The principal objective of this study was to explore swim coaches’ learning situations regarding the development of life skills in youth. In order to do so, a multiple-case study was conducted. In total, 12 coaches who work with elite adolescent-athletes and who are recognised in their field for having approaches centered on their athletes and their personal development were interviewed. The discussion was guided by Trudel, Culver and Werthner (2013) coaches’ learning model, which presents three types of learning situations: (a) mediated learning situations, (b) unmediated learning situations, and (c) internal learning situations. Data analysis reveal that the coaches’ reported having learned from the three types of learning situations and that mostly they mentioned having learned from internal and unmediated learning situations. Reflecting on past athletic experiences and past coaching experiences were the most cited internal learning situations. As for unmediated learning situations, coaches shared having learned through discussions with others and through observation. To conclude, ideas for future research are presented as well as the student-author’s summary of what she has learned through this research’s process.
