Full textThe work is focused on the writing of F. Tozzi (Sienne 1883-Rome 1920) short stories. Our objective is to clarify his new style of writing and his capability to express himself in his own poetics, as defined by himself « I misteriosi atti nostri». By exploring the inexplicable character of human behaviours, the non-sense of life is often recalled. The writer vision, desperate and cruel, since it refuses any hope, is reflected into the characters, tormented by the living uneasiness. All that is typical of an era – end of XIX, beginning of XX century – shaken by deep changes. That is the reason why the writer’s style is modern, being the expression of this particular feeling. The work is structured in five parts : Introduction, Histoire de la critique littéraire, La nouvelle en Italie, Les nouvelles de Federigo Tozzi (Les thèmes principaux – Structure narrative et style de la narration), Conclusions. The study is completed with the presentation of the fundamental points, witness of a modern style. Paratactical syntax ; talking exposures giving privilege to character – reader relationship ; lexis recalling a troubled subjectivity and a « blindness » of being ; alternation writing-description with particular attention to the twisting detail ; very expressive language, all of the above giving their own contribution to a digressive, surprising and wave-like narration. The reading is at the same time free and responsible of an understanding of a text prone to interpretations, typical of new writing styles proposed in the XX century

Full textFederigo Tozzi's literary works are built like a cobweb through punctual signals. The stories he tells get entangled around presences that introduce to the world of mystery, but they do not solve that mystery. The guest of his fictions is the enigma that lays inside everything in the world. All the things that house the world have a deep still essence exhaling restlessness and some kind of fear. Tozzi makes a psychological inquiry, that means, by the etymon, speech on and with the soul. And, since the "psyche", the soul, is not the place of ethereal forms, but the origin of all the imagines, the deep well of passions, the conscience's great river, Tozzi's work get a grotesque aspect, not far from what Hugo writes in is study on Shakespeare. Psychology and Christianity join to give an original representation of life. And also, his tales look like Greek tragedies, where the end, the destiny, is early written in the origin and no hope of changes is offered to the characters. Federigo Tozzi's poetic persist constant all through the years, since Barche capovolte, to the last period's tales and has constant narrative schemes. The motif of the "double" is, in all its aspects, the origin of many tales and quite all the stories have a destiny of death. All the novels, from Paolo to Tre croci, end with the guest's death. Te only exception is Con gli occhi chiusi, where Pietro's mother dies very soon and determines her son's life. The death is the most evident imagine of the Other, it is always the dark, upsetting side of the world. A terrible shadow lays behind everything, carrying ills in the thoughts and leading to bestial actions. On of the most evident signal of this presence is the laugh: human beens transformed in beasts laugh when they fill the captured by the presence of Eros or death. But bestial men and women are different from the beasts of Bestie: the first ones are masks, deformed bodies and souls; the second ones are still and enigmatic signals (according to Bachofen's definition of the symbol). And the "human beasts" are captured by the hallucinations, by the nightmares, the dreams made with open eyes, by the madness, until the self-destruction and the death. Memory, dream, hallucination are the mirrors where the reality is observed: and no solution to the enigma is given. Madness, Heros, death, laughs, bestiality, the confusion of perceptive planes, the presence of the other: Tozzi's world looks like housed by imagines belonging to Dionysus' psychological-mythological world. Dionysus is, indeed, the grotesque got who is present and obscure, which abducts and ravishes.

Full textThe most recent criticism places the work of Federigo Tozzi between Expressionism and Modernist Realism, on positions in both cases of absolute originality in the literary scene of the early twentieth century in Italy. Already in the period immediately following the death of him there was a strong focus for the translation of the works of him, be careful that he focused mainly on the novels. In particular, With eyes closed was the novel that had the greatest number of translations in European languages, while in China the name of Tozzi is substantially still unknown. Until today no Chinese version of a work of him is available. Research on Italian literature in China always follows the main development direction of Italy. Chinese readers already have translations of the masterpieces of the narrators of Modernism, such as Italo Svevo and Luigi Pirandello. This thesis aims to offer translated parts from With eyes closed, with particular attention to language and style. The goal is to provide Chinese readers for the first time the most original content and to share with the Chinese researchers a possible methodology for translation activities and future studies on Tozzi.
