Full textThe work is focused on the writing of F. Tozzi (Sienne 1883-Rome 1920) short stories. Our objective is to clarify his new style of writing and his capability to express himself in his own poetics, as defined by himself « I misteriosi atti nostri». By exploring the inexplicable character of human behaviours, the non-sense of life is often recalled. The writer vision, desperate and cruel, since it refuses any hope, is reflected into the characters, tormented by the living uneasiness. All that is typical of an era – end of XIX, beginning of XX century – shaken by deep changes. That is the reason why the writer’s style is modern, being the expression of this particular feeling. The work is structured in five parts : Introduction, Histoire de la critique littéraire, La nouvelle en Italie, Les nouvelles de Federigo Tozzi (Les thèmes principaux – Structure narrative et style de la narration), Conclusions. The study is completed with the presentation of the fundamental points, witness of a modern style. Paratactical syntax ; talking exposures giving privilege to character – reader relationship ; lexis recalling a troubled subjectivity and a « blindness » of being ; alternation writing-description with particular attention to the twisting detail ; very expressive language, all of the above giving their own contribution to a digressive, surprising and wave-like narration. The reading is at the same time free and responsible of an understanding of a text prone to interpretations, typical of new writing styles proposed in the XX century

Full textFederigo Tozzi's literary works are built like a cobweb through punctual signals. The stories he tells get entangled around presences that introduce to the world of mystery, but they do not solve that mystery. The guest of his fictions is the enigma that lays inside everything in the world. All the things that house the world have a deep still essence exhaling restlessness and some kind of fear. Tozzi makes a psychological inquiry, that means, by the etymon, speech on and with the soul. And, since the "psyche", the soul, is not the place of ethereal forms, but the origin of all the imagines, the deep well of passions, the conscience's great river, Tozzi's work get a grotesque aspect, not far from what Hugo writes in is study on Shakespeare. Psychology and Christianity join to give an original representation of life. And also, his tales look like Greek tragedies, where the end, the destiny, is early written in the origin and no hope of changes is offered to the characters. Federigo Tozzi's poetic persist constant all through the years, since Barche capovolte, to the last period's tales and has constant narrative schemes. The motif of the "double" is, in all its aspects, the origin of many tales and quite all the stories have a destiny of death. All the novels, from Paolo to Tre croci, end with the guest's death. Te only exception is Con gli occhi chiusi, where Pietro's mother dies very soon and determines her son's life. The death is the most evident imagine of the Other, it is always the dark, upsetting side of the world. A terrible shadow lays behind everything, carrying ills in the thoughts and leading to bestial actions. On of the most evident signal of this presence is the laugh: human beens transformed in beasts laugh when they fill the captured by the presence of Eros or death. But bestial men and women are different from the beasts of Bestie: the first ones are masks, deformed bodies and souls; the second ones are still and enigmatic signals (according to Bachofen's definition of the symbol). And the "human beasts" are captured by the hallucinations, by the nightmares, the dreams made with open eyes, by the madness, until the self-destruction and the death. Memory, dream, hallucination are the mirrors where the reality is observed: and no solution to the enigma is given. Madness, Heros, death, laughs, bestiality, the confusion of perceptive planes, the presence of the other: Tozzi's world looks like housed by imagines belonging to Dionysus' psychological-mythological world. Dionysus is, indeed, the grotesque got who is present and obscure, which abducts and ravishes.

Full textThe most recent criticism places the work of Federigo Tozzi between Expressionism and Modernist Realism, on positions in both cases of absolute originality in the literary scene of the early twentieth century in Italy. Already in the period immediately following the death of him there was a strong focus for the translation of the works of him, be careful that he focused mainly on the novels. In particular, With eyes closed was the novel that had the greatest number of translations in European languages, while in China the name of Tozzi is substantially still unknown. Until today no Chinese version of a work of him is available. Research on Italian literature in China always follows the main development direction of Italy. Chinese readers already have translations of the masterpieces of the narrators of Modernism, such as Italo Svevo and Luigi Pirandello. This thesis aims to offer translated parts from With eyes closed, with particular attention to language and style. The goal is to provide Chinese readers for the first time the most original content and to share with the Chinese researchers a possible methodology for translation activities and future studies on Tozzi.

Full textMost flows observed in nature and engineering applications are turbulent. Turbulence increases mixing and transfer of mass, momentum, and internal energy (heat). In the study of turbulent flows, the direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach is recognised to be unrivalled in terms of the accuracy and the completeness of the description provided. However, the steeply increasing computational cost and the huge amount of information resulting from the local and instantaneous description, make the DNS method unaffordable for routine engineering studies. In the industrial framework it is more convenient to pursue a modelling approach based on the statistical representation of turbulent flow fields. On the other hand, the elaboration of simple yet accurate turbulence theories and models may only rely on highly detailed data with small spatial and temporal discretization errors. The present work aims at providing high-fidelity results of relevant turbulent flows in the research field. Two turbulent flows are tackled by means of high-order accurate direct numerical simulation and the physical processes involved are investigated. Firstly, the turbulence generated by a uniform stream passing through an open-cell metal foam layer is analysed. This flow configuration is presented as a novel realization of grid turbulence where, in place of a regular grid, there is a porous matrix which is locally irregular but statistically isotropic. The metal foam geometry is produced synthetically with porosity of 0.92 and streamwise thickness of five times the mean pore diameter. The computation is performed using the high-order finite-difference DNS code Incompact3d at a Reynolds number based on the pore diameter of Re=4000. Closer to the foam than two pore diameters, the pressure and turbulent transport of turbulent kinetic energy are non-negligible. At larger distances from the porous layer, the canonical grid turbulence situation is recovered, where dissipation is balanced by the mean advection of turbulent kinetic energy. In this region, the decay of the main turbulent quantities and characteristic length scales is described by power-law functions. The corresponding exponents are calculated and compared with classical theories of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. The second case investigated is the aerodynamics of a rectangular cylinder with chord-to-thickness ratio c/D=5. This flow configuration is representative of the aerodynamics of a wide range of bluff bodies of interest in civil engineering, and recently has been set as a benchmark for the study of separating and reattaching external flows. Three DNSs of the flow around the rectangular cylinder are carried out at different values of the Reynolds number based on the cylinder thickness Re=3000, 8000 and 14000. The numerical code employed is Nek5000, it is based on a high-order spectral element method. The increase of Re leads to the anticipation of the transitional process along the leading-edge shear layer. This slightly affects the vortex shedding frequency. Variations in the mean flow topology mainly concern the upstream shift of the separation bubbles centre. The larger displacements are observed for the secondary bubble because of the reduced propensity to separate shown by the reverse flow with Re. Negative production phenomena taking place in the shear layer determine the weak dependence between the mean vertical velocity and the Reynolds number. In conclusion, the present work provides two fresh sets of highly accurate DNS data representative of turbulence problems of scientific relevance. Such results constitute a base of information that might improve the physical understanding of turbulent flows and the development of turbulence models, both in the LES and RANS context.

Full textWetlands fill many important ecological functions and contribute to the biodiversity of fauna and flora. Although there is a growing recognition of the importance to protect these areas, it remains that their integrity is still threatened by the pressure of human activities. The inventory and the systematic monitoring of wetlands are a necessity and remote sensing is the only realistic way to achieve this goal. The primary objective of this thesis is to contribute and improve the wetland characterization using satellite polarimetric data acquired in L (ALOS-PALSAR) and C (RADARSAT-2) band. This thesis is based on two hypotheses (Ch. 1). The first hypothesis stipulate that classes of plant physiognomies, based on plant structure, are more appropriate than classes of plant species because they are best adapted to the information content of polarimetric radar data. The second hypothesis states that polarimetric decomposition algorithms allow an optimal extraction of polarimetric information compared to a multi-polarized approach based on the HH, HV and VV channels (Ch. 3). In particular, the contribution of the incoherent Touzi decomposition for the inventory and monitoring of wetlands is examined in detail. This decomposition allows the characterization of the scattering type, its phase, orientation, symmetry, degree of polarization and the backscattered power of a target with a series of parameters extracted from an analysis of the coherency matrix eigenvectors and eigenvalues. The lake Saint-Pierre region was chosen as the study site because of the great diversity of its wetlands that are covering more than 20 000 ha. One of the challenges posed by this thesis is that there is neither a standard system enumerating all the possible physiognomic classes nor an accurate description of their characteristics and dimensions. Special attention was given to the creation of these classes by combining several data sources and more than 50 plant species were grouped into nine physiognomic classes (Ch. 7, 8 and 9). Several analyzes are proposed to validate the hypotheses of this thesis (Ch. 9). Sensitivity analysis using scatter plots are performs to study the characteristics and dispersion of plant physiognomic classes in various features space consisting of polarimetric parameters or polarization channels (Ch. 10 and 12). Time series of made of RADARSAT-2 images are used to deepen the understanding of the seasonal evolution of plant physiognomies (Ch. 12). The transformed divergence algorithm is used to quantify the separability between physiognomic classes and to identify the parameters (s) that contribute the most to their separability (Ch. 11 and 13). Classifications are also proposed and the results compared to an existing map of the lake Saint-Pierre wetlands (Ch. 14). Finally, an analysis of the potential of polarimetric parameters in C and L-band is proposed for the monitoring of peatlands hydrology (Ch. 15 and 16). Sensitivity analyses show that the parameters of the 1st component, relative to the dominant (polarized) part of the signal, are sufficient for a general characterization of plant physiognomies. The parameters of the second and third components are, however, needed for better class separability (Ch. 11 and 13) and a better discrimination between wetlands and uplands (Ch. 14). This thesis shows that it is preferable to consider individually the parameters of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd components rather than their weighted sum by their respective eigenvalues (Ch. 10 and 12). This thesis also examines the complementarity between the structural parameters and those related to the backscattered power, often ignored and normalized by most polarimetric decomposition. The temporal (seasonal) dimension is essential for the characterization and classification of plant physiognomies (Ch. 12, 13 and 14). Images acquired in spring (April and May) are needed to discriminate between upland and wetlands while images acquired in summer (July and August) are needed to refine the classifications of plant physiognomies. A hierarchical classification tree developed in this thesis represents a synthesis of the acquired knowledge (Chapter 14). Using a relatively small number of polarimetric parameters and simple decision rules, it is possible to identify, among other, three low marshes classes and to discriminate with success herbaceous high marshes from other physiognomic classes without using ancillary data source. The results obtained are comparable to those from a supervised classification using two Landsat-5 images with an overall accuracy of 77.3% and 79.0% respectively. Various classifications using the support vector machine (SVM) can reproduce the results obtained with the hierarchical classification tree. But the possible exploitation by the SVM of a higher dimensionality, with a maximum overall accuracy of 79.1%, does not allow however to achieve significantly better results. Finally, the phase of the Touzi decomposition appears to be the only parameter (in L-band) sensitive to changes in water level beneath the peat surface (Ch. 16). Therefore, this parameter offer a great potential for peatlands hydrology monitoring compared to the HH-VV phase difference. This thesis demonstrates that the Touzi decomposition parameters allow a better characterization, better separability and better classifications of wetlands plant physiognomic classes than HH, HV and VV polarization channels. The grouping of plant species into physiognomic classes is a valid concept. However, some plant species sharing a similar physiognomy, but occupying a different environment (high vs. low marshes), have presented significant differences in their scattering properties.
