Abstract:
Thesis (DTh (Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology))—Stellenbosch University, 2008.
This study concerns the relationship between mysticism and social action (widely understood, as including political and economic action), or as it was formulated for centuries in the Christian tradition: the relationship between action and contemplation. Chapter 1 differentiates between different forms of Christian spirituality. Also, the reason for this study is stated: the apparent search amongst certain contemporary Reformed Christians for a more contemplative spirituality, while preserving the socially and politically involved character of Reformed spirituality. Chapter 2 investigates the origins and evelopment of contemplation (or “mysticism”, as it is commonly called today). Taking into account the history of the meaning of the term “mysticism”, a contemporary definition is sought that would address the changes, distortions and misconceptions that have developed over the centuries. A major focus in Chapter 2 is the relationship between action and contemplation/mysticism. This issue is reviewed with reference to its history, from patristic times until approximately the time of the Counter-reformation. The extent to which distortions regarding this issue have occurred, as well as possible subsequent corrections of these, are also examined in this chapter. In Chapter 3, a short overview is given of the recent revaluation and incorporation of mysticism alongside a commitment to social action in the theology of a number of prominent “mystical-political” Roman-Catholic theologians of the 20th century. The focus then shifts to the revaluation of mysticism and the reformulation of mystical-prophetic theology in the theological project of the 20th-century North American theologian David Tracy. Of especial importance is his use of the Ricoeurian methodology of “suspicion and retrieval” to retrieve and incorporate the Christian mystical tradition into his own theology, as this forms the ethodological basis for the next chapter. Chapter 4 takes the form of an “exercise of suspicion and retrieval” with a view to find and retrieve possible mystical elements in the Reformed tradition via an investigation into the history, way of life and spirituality of the Roman Catholic contemplative monastic order of the Carthusians – specifically their tradition of manibus praedicare and the manifestations thereof. Chapter 5 focuses on the theology and spirituality of the Dutch theologian K.H. (Kornelis) Miskotte as an example of a Reformed theologian in whose theology elements of both contemplation/mysticism and social action are present. Contrary to the views of many researchers into Miskotte’s theology (as well as Miskotte himself) it is concluded that: In light of the recent, sometimes retrieved, views of mysticism by present-day scholars of mysticism – as well as those of the mystical-political theologians, especially David Tracy – Miskotte’s spirituality can indeed be seen as a form of mystical-political spirituality. This is true despite some profound differences between the mystical-prophetic theologians and Tracy on the one hand and Miskotte on the other – differences that, however, stamp Miskotte’s mystical-political spirituality as authentically Reformed.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the ideas of ‘dialogue’ and ‘fragment’ in the work of the American liberal Roman Catholic theologian David Tracy (bn. 1939). Dialogue (or ‘conversation’) established itself as a dominant idea for Tracy in the 1980s, whereas the centrality of fragments first emerged for Tracy in the late 1990s, to complicate and refine his earlier thinking. Despite this historical sequence, however, the organisation of this thesis is thematic rather than essentially chronological. The first three chapters focus on how in the later 1970s and 1980s Tracy adapted his ideas of conversation-dialogue from the thought of the German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer. Chapter Four examines some serious objections to Tracy’s concept of dialogic reason, before defending his basic choices and gesturing towards his more recent work as perhaps resolving real previous difficulties. Chapter Five explores the ‘ontological`’ thinking of Martin Heidegger, valuable for evaluating Tracy despite the latter’s determination to put his own thinking on a more empirical and pluralistic footing. Chapter Six tackles this theme of Tracy’s ongoingly ‘empirical’ sensibility, as well as the importance he has attached to the experiencing human ‘self.’ Tracy’s ideas of human experience and selfhood owe much to William James and to Bernard Lonergan. Chapter Seven examines ‘correlational’ concepts that Tracy has forged to facilitate Christian theology over the course of his career since Blessed Rage for Order (1975). As Tracy became philosophically and theologically uncomfortable with theism as the supposed essential horizon for theology (around 1990), so the idea of the ‘mystical-prophetic’ emerged to open a door into new horizons of thinking. Chapter Eight highlights an easily overlooked antecedent of the hermeneutical negativity that Tracy’s recent ideas of ‘fragments’ imply: in Gadamer’s sense of the Christina negative ‘sign’ of the Ecce Homo. Chapter Nine then focuses on Tracy’s ideas of thinking through fragments: their adequacy and possible consequences.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Mary Ann Hinsdale
This dissertation explicates and evaluates the theological anthropology of David Tracy. Through a reading of the whole of Tracy's published theological corpus, it argues that Tracy's work on theological method, hermeneutics, public theology, and otherness rests on an implicit and evolving understanding of the human person. This anthropology is rooted in four key characteristics or "anthropological constants": finitude, relationality, sin, and grace. The methodological approach of the dissertation is genealogical and hermeneutical. Each of these four constants is taken as an interpretive lens through which the dissertation considers the development of Tracy's thought. This approach will demonstrate first how finitude, relationality, sin, and grace are interwoven in Tracy's work, and second how the development of his core theological loci of method, interpretation, public-ness, pluralism, and otherness are rooted in these four constants. The text concludes with an evaluation of Tracy's theology anthropology in light of his context as a North American, late 20th century, Catholic theologian. Tracy's work provides insight into the interdependence of theological method and anthropology. However, while he attends to the importance of how historical, linguistic, and social context shape human persons, his conceptual approach to context tends to ignore particularity and embodiment. Nevertheless, the four "constants" of Tracy's theological anthropology could fruitfully engage contemporary currents such as ecotheology and disability theology. This dissertation is the most thorough and sustained foray into the question of David Tracy's theological anthropology to date, and as such provides a significant contribution to the field of 20th/21st century North American Catholic theology

Abstract:
Abstract Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are commonly used to determine velocity fields from a flow, given that sufficient tracers can be added and tracked to determine their motion. While these types of measurements are typically completed using high-speed cameras to capture the trajectories of the tracer particles, the experiments performed at the University of New Mexico generated extensive time-resolved infrared temperature image (i.e. thermogram) sets of a free-falling particle curtain captured at 300 Hz. The camera used for such measurements was an ImageIR8300 high-speed IR camera which provides a resolution of 640 × 512. The thermogram sets acquired have been extensively analyzed with two commonly used commercial PIV analysis packages, DaVis and PIVlab. The comparison between the two software packages showed consistent velocity fields and contours, along with corresponding average velocity as functions of discharge position. As expected, the vertical velocity component of these gravity-driven curtains follows a trend that resembles a free-falling sphere rather than a falling sphere experiencing drag. The study also found that the discharge velocity showed negligible effects due to the inlet particle temperature of the curtain. These results will be applied to the development of a methodology to estimate the mass flow rate of particle curtain and plumes using a novel non-intrusive image correlation methodology.

Abstract:
Abstract S-lay installation methodology is an industry accepted method for the installation of subsea rigid pipelines. Pipeline initiation is a major operation during the start of S-lay and its selection is dependent on various factors including project requirements, field layout and strength of holdback. The beachpull initiation method is utilized in shallow water regions where a barge or vessel is unable to access the initiation point due to keel clearance. For most applications, however, the dead man anchor initiation method is utilized irrespective of the water depth. For the dead man anchor methodology, the type of anchor needs to be selected based on the in-situ conditions. Near the jacket, conventional dead-man anchor initiation is not feasible due to the presence of subsea assets. The holdback method provides an acceptable alternative in such cases. There are several variations of this method such as elevated holdback, vertical bow string and horizontal bow string initiation which are chosen based on operational requirements. During a project undertaken recently in the Middle East region, several initiation challenges were encountered due to congested fields owing to subsea assets and the best suitable methodology was determined which included dead man and elevated holdback initiation. It was observed that optimizing the initiation, reduced risk associated with subsea asset clashes and accelerate the schedule. For another fast track project in Asia Pacific region at deeper water depths, vertical bow string initiation was used to override challenges in reducing loads on the jacket. On the same project a modified initiation method was adopted to avoid a davit lift operation, shorten the target box distance and avoid saturation diving which helped the project avoid mobilization of a large anchored or DP barge and utilize available diving support vessel with a single crane or davit. The paper explains different challenges in pipelay initiation operations of subsea rigid pipelines and the selection of the appropriate type of initiation. It also presents recent case studies of different initiation operations with the associated challenges and benefits.

Abstract:
Cross-sectional thin film micro-particle image velocimetry (cTFMPIV) analysis has been performed for air-water two-phase flow in a 19.05 mm horizontal duct. Images were captured by introducing a light sheet from a Nd:YAG laser into the flow, with the fluorescent emissions from three micron particles captured by a CCD camera behind a microscope objective and red filter. These images were grouped into pairs and digitally enhanced to isolate particle traces using commercial image processing software. Image pairs were collected for five air flow rates at each of four water flow rates and separated into base film and wave zones for PIV analysis. Using DaVis 7.1 (LaVision GmbH), vector maps were obtained for each pair. Less than 2% of the image pairs were removed due to clearly spurious vectors, while the appropriate zone for less than 8% of the image pairs could not be determined These pairs were grouped into a third batch. The vector maps were analyzed to calculate velocity profiles and turbulence (fluctuation) statistics in terms of wall coordinates. These statistics included intensities and Reynolds stresses. The base film shows laminar behavior beyond what would be expected from the universal velocity profile. The wave zone displays significantly different behavior and appears to reach an asymptote rapidly. Calculation of fluctuation intensities indicates a maximum within the wave zone along the gas-liquid interface, while the distribution of radial fluctuations in the base film and axial turbulence in all zones is approximately uniform. Calculation of the u′v′ shear Reynolds stress suggests that it has a negative value.

The need to divide attention in order to deal with information flowing in from a number of sources is observable in many work settings. Although most people can perform several simple activities concurrently, such as eating and watching television (Sharon, 1997), making simultaneous decisions is difficult (Pashler & Johnston, 1998). For the majority, task overload causes errors in performance (Girard, 2007), a decline in the quality of treatment (Ruthruff et al., 2001), and longer reaction time (Levy et al., 2006). The few who cope efficiently under such circumstances employ different cognitive strategies. Teamwork is one way of managing multiple demands. Group work makes it possible to deal with larger amounts of information and to generate a variety of ideas as well as to minimize faulty conclusions. On the other hand, individuals make speedier and better decisions, and are not subject to the tensions of interplay (Davis and Toseland, 1987). The literature offers little information on methods of testing the conditions under which tasks should be handled by one agent or a team. The educational project described here was conducted comparing efficiency of performance of a series of tasks by individuals and small groups. 116 participants, ranging in age from high school level through holders of Masters' degrees, 58 women and the same number of men, were presented with a computer game based on educational software. Participants were instructed to manipulate a tracker by means of the keyboard in order to contact a target moving randomly on the screen. The game was arranged in five levels of difficulty. A comparison was made of the speed in which objectives were attained when performed individually and when divided among groups of two to four partners, controlling for the type of coordination, cognitive style and additional background variables. Cases of expedient and inexpedient division of labor were identified, as were factors affecting feasibility. Among the latter were the size of the simultaneous task load, complexity level, number of participants, and the intensity of coordination required among them.

Abstract:
The article examines the views of one of the founders of classical economics, David Ricardo, on the issues of investment, capital and profit. The need for this study is caused by the lack of a single definition of investment in the regulatory acts of investment legislation, as well as in the scientific community. Thus, there is a problem of regulatory regulation of one of the most important concepts of the economy. Given that the concepts of investment, capital, and capital investment are primarily economic categories, it seems quite reasonable to consider the emergence and development of these concepts in the retrospect of economic theories, in order to understand the essence of the phenomenon and finally solve the issue of its legal regulation. The scientific novelty of the study is that despite a large number of works on the work of David Ricardo «The Beginnings of Political Economy and Taxation», no special work was carried out on the contribution of the great economist to the theory of investment. Conclusions. The main achievements of Ricardo in the field of capital and investment include the author's definitions of capital, free capital, the creation of a theory of comparative advantages of trade, the division of capital into fixed and circulating capital depending on strength, as well as the description of the reasons that stimulate and hinder foreign investment.
