Abstract:

Abstract The parasitic copepod, Lernanthropinus trachuri (Brian, 1903) (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida, Lernanthropidae)was found on the Mediterranean horse mackerel, Trachurus mediterraneus in Bandırma Bay, Turkey. The aim of this study is to present female Lernanthropinus trachuri with morphological characters with photos from Turkey. The details unseen in photos were supported with drawings. All parasites were firmly attached to the gill filaments of the host. This parasite is also specific for the genus Trachurus (Costa et al 2017). Therefore, this parasite may use as biomonitor or tag species for fish stock studies in Turkey.

Abstract:

AbstractAnisakis is a parasite of marine mammals that uses a great number of fish species as intermediate or paratenic hosts. It is common in commercially important marine fishes and its presence is of great concern for both human health and economic reasons. Horse mackerels (Trachurus trachurus) originated from the Northern Aegean Sea were examined for the presence of Anisakis spp. larvae. The prevalence of Anisakis spp. was found 98.8 %. The number of parasites was significantly related to the host’s length but was not related to the fish gender. The month of sampling affected the size of the fishes and consequently the number of parasites. The length of larvae was not related to the host’s length. The present study resulted in the design of a prediction model for the number of existing parasites in the fish by measuring only its Fixed Length.

Abstract:

Trachurus trachurus, is a migratory, semi-pelagic species of the Carangidae family living in schools often associated with mackerel. This species is very common in the Mediterranean, and it is found on all Moroccan coasts. This study aims to determine the length-weight relationship and the condition factor (K) of Trachurus trachurus. Thus, 390 specimens were collected between August 2017 and August 2018 in the central-east region of the Moroccan Mediterranean. The parameters of the length-weight relationship were determined and analyzed by length and sex. It appears that this species has better growth in length than in weight, therefore having a negative or lower allometry. It varies according to sex, length, and season. This result shows that Trachurus trachurus in this study is not overweight in its habitat.

Oocyte development in captive Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 623–630. This 13-month experimental study focused on developing oocyte production in 101 adult female Atlantic horse mackerel. In addition, proxies of energy patterns in relation to oocyte development were investigated. The fish were captured off western Norway and fed to satiation from October 2005 to November 2006 in two replicate adjacent circular tanks. Monthly histological examination of the ovaries indicated that vitellogenic oocytes were present at all times throughout the study period, but that oocyte development did not progress past the incipient migratory nucleus stage. The oocyte diameter (OD) threshold between pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes and the mean OD of the leading cohort were investigated, and no hiatus was observed within the OD size distribution around the 185-µm pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic threshold. Variation in gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, condition factor, and fat content (as measured by the use of a Distell Fish Fatmeter) increased with oocyte development. The observed development of oocyte recruitment and the absence of a hiatus in the oocyte distribution are characteristics of an asynchronous spawner. The species seems to have a prolonged spawning season, judging from the advanced and variety of maturity stages throughout the study period.

Abstract:

The study was carried out to assess the microbiological quality of smoked Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus in four markets in Orlu Local Government Area, South East, Nigeria. Forty freshly smoked samples of Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus were procured from Eke Eziachi, Orlu Main, Aforaja Umuowa and Afor Ogidi Ihioma markets and analyzed using standard techniques. Results revealed that Orlu main market had the highest level of microbial contamination (mean bacteria and fungi count of 5 x 102 and 10 x 102cfu/g respectively). The highest total viable count (7 x102 cfu/g) of Scomber scumbrus was obtained in Aforaja Umuowa market while the least value of 2 x102 cfu/g was observed in Afor Ogidi Ihioma market. Also, similar value was recorded in Trachurus trachurus at Aforaja Umuowa market. Results from the study indicated that pathogens present in fish samples included bacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp and Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (Gliocladium spp., Candida spp., Rhizopus spp., Alternaria spp., Aspergillus spp., Clasdosprium spp., Fonsecaca spp., Chrysoporius spp., mucour spp. and Botrytis spp). The study also showed that freshly smoked Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus samples sold in the four markets under assessment were contaminated with pathogenic organisms. Abstract:

The length-weight relationship and variation of condition factor in relation to the total length (TL) of Trachurus trachurus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868) were studied. Samples were collected in the eastern Adriatic Sea using bottom-trawl during 2008 and 2009. The b values for males, females and total sample showed that the growth of T. trachurus was isometric, i.e. equal in length and weight. The growth of the males and females of T. mediterraneus was positively allometric while the total sample (males, female and immature) showed isometric growth. The condition factor was calculated indicating the smallest values in immature specimens. The highest values of condition factor for males and females of both species were observed in the range of TL from 16 to 19 cm and 31 to 33 cm, respectively.

The majority of the assembly, 98.68%, is scaffolded into 24 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl has identified 25,797 protein coding genes.

To determine the effect of temperature on the development rates of artificially fertilized eggs of Trachurus trachurus, experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 10.5°C to 19°C. Egg development through to hatching only took place at 11.7–19°C. At lower temperature, eggs did not develop beyond the stage where the outline of the embryo was clearly discernible and a defined median line of the embryonic shield (stage 4 in this study) was apparent. Development time took from 46 h at 19°C to 126 h at 12°C. A generalized linear model of the stage-dependent development time (age) as a function of incubation temperature was developed. The data are also compared with those reported in the literature and related to sea temperature on the spawning grounds.

AbstractIn this study the following parasites were found in fishes from the Dardanelles at Çanakkale: Cestoda: Bothriocephalus scorpii, Grillotia sp. and Scolex pleuronectis in Solea solea; Digenea: Ectenurus lepidus, Prodistomum polonii and Monascus filiformis in Trachurus trachurus, Hemiuridae metacercaria in S. solea, Lecithocladium excisum in Scomber scombrus, Lecithostaphylus retroflexus in Belone belone, Opechona bacillaris in Pomatomus saltatrix and S. scombrus and Schikhobalotrema sparisomae in Liza saliens; Nematoda: Hysterothylacium aduncum in T. trachurus, S. solea, Sparus aurata, P. saltatrix, L. saliens and Engraulis encrasicolus and Anisakis simplex in S. scombrus; Acanthocephala: Neoechinorynchus agilıs in L. saliens. No parasites were recovered from Sardinella aurita. Most of these species are well known in both the Mediterranean and Black Seas, but the Dardanelles appears to be the limit of the range of Anisakıs simplex.

Three gastrocotylid genera share similar morphology and anatomy but are distinguished by this character: Pseudaxine Parona & Perugia, 1890 has no vagina, Allogastrocotyle Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983 has two vaginae, and Pseudaxinoides Lebedev, 1968 has multiple vaginae. In the course of a study of Pseudaxine trachuri Parona & Perugia 1890, we found specimens with structures resembling “multiple vaginae”; we compared them with specimens without vaginae in terms of both morphology and molecular characterisitics (COI barcode), and found that they belonged to the same species. We also investigated the male copulatory organ (MCO) of this species, the accuracy of the original description of which is known to be a matter of debate. We found that the genital atrium is armed with 12 hooks arranged as a single circle and a central hollow stylet which is probably involved in traumatic insemination. We redescribed Pseudaxine trachuri based on newly collected specimens from off the coast of Algeria and Museum specimens from off France. Specimens from the type-host, Trachurus trachurus, were found to be similar, for both molecular sequences and morphology, to those found on Boops boops. We can therefore confirm, for the first time with molecular evidence, that B. boops is a host of this parasite. We consider that Pseudaxinoides was erected on the basis of an erroneous interpretation of structures which are not vaginae and, consequently, propose the transfer of most of its species to Pseudaxine, as P. australis (Lebedev, 1968) n. comb., P. bychowskyi (Lebedev, 1977) n. comb., P. caballeroi (Lebedev, 1977) n. comb., P. cariacoensis (Nasir & Fuentes-Zambrano, 1983) n. comb., and P. vietnamensis (Lebedev, Parukhin & Roitman, 1970) n. comb. We also propose Allogastrocotyle dillonhargisorum nom. nov. for Pseudaxine bivaginalis Dillon & Hargis, 1965 to avoid a secondary homonymy.

AbstractOffshore wind farms (OWFs) act as artificial reefs, attracting high abundances of fish, which could potentially increase their local production. This study investigates the feeding ecology of fish species that abundantly occur at artificial habitats, such as OWFs, by examining the short- and the long-term dietary composition of five species: the benthopelagic Gadus morhua and Trisopterus luscus, the pelagic Scomber scombrus and Trachurus trachurus, and the benthic Myoxocephalus scorpioides. We conducted combined stomach content and stable isotope analyses to examine the short- and the time-integrated dietary composition, respectively. Our results indicated that benthopelagic and benthic species utilize artificial reefs, such as OWFs, as feeding grounds for a prolonged period, since both analyses indicated that they exploit fouling organisms occurring exclusively on artificial hard substrates. Trachurus trachurus only occasionally uses artificial reefs as oases of highly abundant resources. Scomber scombrus does not feed on fouling fauna and therefore its augmented presence in OWFs is probably related to reasons other than the enhanced food availability. The long-termed feeding preferences of benthic and benthopelagic species contribute to the hypothesis that the artificial reefs of OWFs could potentially increase the fish production in the area. However, this was not supported for the pelagic species.

AbstractThe helminth parasite fauna of the oceanic horse mackerel Trachurus picturatus Bowdich 1825, caught off the Madeira Islands was composed of six different taxa. Prevalence and abundance of larval Anisakis sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) and Nybelinia lingualis (Trypanorhyncha: Tentaculariidae), the most common parasite taxa, were 24.3%, 0.9 and 37.9%, 0.7, respectively. Bolbosoma vasculosum (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) and the monogeneans Heteraxinoides atlanticus (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) and Pseudaxine trachuri (Monogenea: Gastrocotylidae) were comparatively rare. The depauperate helminth fauna of the oceanic horse mackerel at Madeira compared to other geographical regions of the north-eastern Atlantic, namely the Azores banks and the West African coast, may be attributed to the paucity of nutrients off oceanic islands and to a low density of the fish population.

The aim of this study was to measure selected metal concentrations inTrachurus trachurus,Trachurus picturatus, andTrachurus mediterraneus, which are widely consumed in Spain. Principal component analysis suggested that the variable Cr was the main responsible variable for the identification ofT. trachurus, the variables As and Sn forT. mediterraneus, and the rest of variables forT. picturatus. This well-defined discrimination between fish species provided by mineral element allows us to distinguish them on the basis of their metal content. Based on the samples collected, and recognizing the inferential limitation of the sample size of this study, the metal concentrations found are below the proposed limit values for human consumption. However, it should be taken into consideration that there are other dietary sources of these metals. In conclusion, metal contents in the fish species analyzed are acceptable for human consumption from a nutritional and toxicity point of view.

We explore the potential impact of climatic and oceanic variables on the dynamics of horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus (coastal distribution) and albacore Thunnus alalunga (oceanic distribution). Principal components analysis of a set of environmental parameters for the years 1966–2000 allowed us to characterize the system by three components. The first consisted mainly of sea surface temperature (SST; 18.5% of variability), the second was determined by the oceanic transport indices, potential energy anomaly (PEA), and the Gulf Stream Index (15.6%), and the third by the meridional wind component and Ekman transport (11.5%). Horse mackerel recruitment was negatively correlated mainly with the first thermal component, whereas albacore age 3 catches were negatively correlated with the second oceanic component and positively with the third wind component. Multiple linear regression confirmed that environmental conditions [SST, PEA, and the zonal (east–west) wind component] explained the availability of age 3 albacore to the surface fisheries for the period 1975–1999. In contrast, cross-validation analysis showed that environmental conditions did not consistently explain horse mackerel recruitment, probably because of the short time-series available (15 y).

Abstract Rocinela dumerilii (Lucas, 1849) is obtained on the horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Sea of Marmara, in Turkey. This species is a free-living organism from the Aegean Sea of Turkey, the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic. Its micropredator behaviour is discovered for the first time in this study. Elthusa sinuata (Koelbel, 1879) is also collected on the gill cavity of Fries’s goby, Lesueurigobius friesii (Malm, 1874) in this study. This host is a new record for Elthusa sinuata. The morphological characters of Rocinela dumerilii species are given by drawings.
