Akiyode, Akolade. "Spaces of the informal economy : reimagining street trading through accessibility distribution analyses in Lagos." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/109875/.

Full text
Abstract:
Street traders operate in and around spaces that facilitate optimal interactions with potential customers - a distribution pattern which coincides with the busiest and most central parts of a city. In Lagos, street trading is ubiquitous and its appropriation of public space is contentious for spatial governance. Attempts at regulation exacerbate the precarious status of street traders and are mostly unsuccessful, and this is due to the limited understanding of the spatiality of street trading. The locations where street trading thrives are thus investigated in this thesis to unravel what aspects of spatiality creates the milieu that encourages their activities - an area of research that has received little attention in recent years. The aim is to contribute to the discourse on inclusive urban practices and policies in developing country cities. In literature, the determinants of street traders workplace locations are referenced to externalities from locational centrality and potent human activity (Dewar and Watson 1990; Monnet et al. 2007; Skinner 2008b; Skinner 2008a; Dobson et al. 2009). However, this body of work has not employed a systematic analysis in the study of such locations. This gap in research is addressed by using a novel methodological framework known as ‘Spatial Design Network Analysis for Street-Based Enterprises’ (sDNA-sBEL), which combines the systematic analyses of multi-scale network accessibility distribution with morphological properties of urban form. As a principle of sDNA-sBEL, open-source data and freeware applications were used to ensure replicability and accessibility to a broader audience. The sDNA-sBEL analyses identified that the most prolific street trading locations in Lagos have high values of macro-scale betweenness – spaces traversed most frequently while Lagosians take the shortest routes for long distance (inter-city) vehicular journeys. However, other compositional spatial factors must coincide with macro-scale betweenness to sustain street trading.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the affects of the French Revolution of 1789 and the Mexican Revolution of 1910 on gender roles in their respective societies. Women that contributed to political discourse challenged separations of public and private spheres, which dictated order in the late and postrevolutionary periods of France and Mexico. Given the deliberate acts by both postrevolutionary governments to send women to the periphery of their respective societies, it is vital to revisit the examples of female influence that shaped the early French and Mexican Revolutions. The understanding that comes from a detailed analysis of the parameters of gendered spaces before, during, and after revolution sheds light on the relationships between order and gender that determined the future of women in their respective postrevolutionary worlds.

Marshall, Richard Carel. "A state space forecasting approach to commodity futures trading." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185667.

Full text
Abstract:
State space forecasting originated in the mid-1970's from engineering models based upon the Kalman filter. To date, the application of state space forecasting to commodity and financial markets has been limited. This study examines a system for trading futures contracts using state space forecasts of commodity futures prices. The system is evaluated for a speculative asset (gold) and a nonspeculative commodity (copper). Price forecasts are developed from multivariate state space models, and the variables considered in the models are those which, according to economic theory, may influence price movements. It is demonstrated that the relative importance of the different economic variables changes over time. Through simulated trading of copper and gold futures contracts, it is also shown that significant profits can be generated from the state space forecasting approach, especially when prices are trending upward or downward fairly continuously. Relaxing the position limit of one contract substantially increases profits. The results suggest that the copper and gold futures markets may be inefficient in the semistrong sense.

Mendelsohn, Martin. "Space, place and belonging: informal trading in and around Congolenses market, Luanda, Angola." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17424.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references
The dissertation explores the interplay between government, informal street traders and the public in and around the Congolenses marketplace in Luanda, Angola. The nation was ravaged by 27 years of civil war until 2002. During this time, most of the city made use of extensive systems of informal provisioning to survive. Since the end of the war, the government has undertaken a high degree of spatial and social reordering with wide ranging consequences for those who inhabit the city, especially within the informal economy. Most previous research focusing on the informal economy, or government policy in Luanda has taken sectoral and city wide approaches. As such, the opportunity to explore the effects and manifestations of policy on informality in a site specific context presents itself. The Congolenses market is a key point in the city where interplay between informality, the public and government has taken place. This dissertation examines the various spatial constituents of Congolenses, reviews its situation within the context of greater Luanda, and discusses the role which informal trade has and continues to play in the city. Furthermore, in investigating the relationship between informal traders and the government's stance towards them, perspectives were drawn from three focal areas: The lived realities of traders in the area through in depth interviews, the perceptions of and ways in which the area is used by pedestrians through surveys, and how the Angolan government has interacted with them through media scans, observations and key literatures. It was found that planning mechanisms, including spatial, legal, and policy should be employed as critical interventions for the creation of an inclusive space to the advantage of all users of the market. Finally, a spatial concept was produced, suggesting improved land uses, and physical infrastructural interventions in the area and provides the view that a change in the current perspective of the Angolan government would be of benefit to informal traders and the Angolan economy.

Abstract:
Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is an aggressive invader from Asia that has killed millions of trees in North America. Recently EAB has been documented developing in a novel host, white fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus. I evaluated larval performance in two common ash species and white fringetree by infesting excised bolts with emerald ash borer eggs. In addition I evaluated several plant characteristics to determine which most influence larval development. I also conducted choice and no choice assays using the classical biological control agent, Tetrastichus planipennisi (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), to assess its ability to locate larval EAB in the different host plants. I found significantly lower survival rates of EAB larvae in white fringetree compared to white ash, F. americana. Larval phloem consumption and larval growth were lower in fringetree than in both ash tested. In choice and no choice assays T. planipennisi failed to parasitize larvae in fringetree. Failure of T. planipennisi to parasitize larvae within fringetree has implications for the efficacy of this classical biological control agent. Coupled with the use of white fringetree as a reservoir host, the enemy free space provided to EAB through use of this alternate host may have repercussions for EAB invasion dynamics.

Abstract:
Outer Space no longer represents a quiet mean where governments place their satellites in order to cover the communications needs of their people. Technological developments and the increase of economic benefits deriving from telecommunications have caused the proliferation of megacarriers located on a world-wide basis and the treatment of telecommunications as a business product. In this scenario, the International Telecommunication Union and the World Trade Organization separately rule the development of telecommunications via satellite, affecting national regulations and, at the same time, the evolvement of the pattern in commercial relations among the companies who develop satellite telecommunications in outer space. This thesis illustrates the state of the liberalization of telecommunications and the main national obstacles for its achievement. This study thoroughly analyzes the functioning of the two leader organizations, ITU and WTO, and the regulations that they are enacting. Additionally, the thesis analyzes the most practical and new problems that influence their structure, such as the new technological developments, the role of national regulations of some countries, and the privatization of intergovernmental organizations. Moreover, the thesis examines the increase in the demand of space resources and the introduction of market mechanisms to the attribution of orbital slots and frequencies, due to the increase of private actors, and concludes with the proposal of possible models of cooperation between the two leader organizations. ITU and WTO, in order to rationally and efficiently deal with ruling telecommunications.

Horber, Jens. "The right to a 'world class city'?: street trading, public space and urban governance in the Cape Town city centre." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27952.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a long history of street trading restriction in South Africa, and the relocation of traders from key public spaces in Cape Town, in connection with renovation and construction for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, highlighted the contested nature of street trading in the Cape Town city centre. The Grand Parade, South Africa's oldest public space, sits adjacent to the city's major public transport hub, and plays a vital role in the daily lives of many city residents. Therefore, public space contestations, and the informal sector's importance in job creation and poverty reduction, necessitate an investigation into the impacts of the City of Cape Town's street trading management approach on the livelihood strategies of traders on the Parade. I review relevant literature on street trading management, and develop criteria for assessing the City of Cape Town's street trading management approach. These criteria are linked to Lefebvre's (1968) and Fainstein's (2010) concepts of 'the right to the city' and 'the just city' respectively. The main research question thus asks: What is the impact of the City of Cape Town's street trading management approach on the livelihood strategies of traders on the Grand Parade? The research uses the case study and discourse analysis methods to address this question. Data is collected through nonparticipant observation and individual semi-structured interview techniques. The focus is on capturing the views and experiences of traders on the Grand Parade. The research findings indicate that the City of Cape Town tends to adopt a more restrictive approach to managing traders on the Grand Parade, and that this has, effectively, a negative impact on trader livelihoods. This approach serves to produce informal arrangements, aggression and resistance on the part of traders. A disjuncture is found between the stated developmental approach of the City's Informal Trading Policy (informed by national developmental policies) and its practices. The combination of organisational restructuring processes, confused mandates as well as the low political and funding priority given to street trading management has meant that the complex of socio-economic factors and persistent management issues on the Parade, that require interdepartmental cooperation to address, continue to negatively impact trader livelihoods. I recommend that the City of Cape Town, in line with the aims contained in its Informal Trading Policy, and inspired by the 'eThekwini model', implement a more progressive street trading management approach that is based on participatory and area-based approaches. A dedicated focus on capacitating trader organisations through training initiatives is recommended, as well as changes to trading permit application processes and conditions. Lastly, specific recommendations are also made to better enable livelihood strategies of street traders on the Grand Parade.

This research tries to test the effectiveness of an interest rate arbitrage strategy in Brazil based on a Dynamic Nelson-Siegel model applied to the term structure of future contracts of 1 day of interest rates traded at BM&FBovespa for the time between January, 2nd of 2008, and December, 3rd, 2012. The work adapts to the Brazilian market the mode originally proposed by Nelson and Siegel (1987), and some of its extensions and interpretations, reaching one of the models proposed by Diebold, Rudebusch and Aruoba (2006), in which they estimate the parameters of Nelson-Siegel Model in one only step, putting it in a state-space form and using the Kalman Filter to make the factors’ forecast, assuming that their behavior is an order 1 VAR. The model has the advantage that all the parameters are estimated simultaneously, and the authors showed that it has a good forecast power. The results of the adopted strategy were encouraging when considered for negotiation only the 7 first available maturities at BM&FBovespa, which have maturity of around 1 year.

"O regionalismo desenvolvimentista sul-americano frente ao sistema multilateral de comércio: uma análise júridica de exercício de policy space pelas organizações de integração regional da América do Sul." Abstract:
This thesis aims to answer the following question: Can it be said that the South American developmental regionalism, carried out throughout the twentieth century, and the new developmental regionalism, implemented during the first decade of this century, are compatible with the rules of multilateral trading system? In other words, have the regional integration organizations in South America based their developmental policies in the policy space resulting from the developmental legal prerogatives of the multilateral trading system? To treat such theme, we start from the premise that the countries of South America have historically made use of legal rights for development, since these arose in the multilateral trading system, and enabled the implementation of policies at the national and regional levels. From a legal perspective, the thesis analyses the compatibility of the main developmental aspects of regional integration organizations created in South America since the LAFTA in 1960 to UNASUR, in 2008 with the rules of the multilateral trading system. It was concluded that both the old and the new developmental regionalism in South America were brought forward in accordance with international trade law, either through the GATT period, either during the WTO period. Even with the reduction of policy space resulting from the entry into force of the WTO agreements, South America managed to maintain a relatively high level of policy space for the creation of developmental public policies. Currently, there is a perceived trend of regional integration organizations in South America, especially the MERCOSUR and UNASUR, to carry out public policies on topics unregulated by the WTO, which would characterize a strategy WTO-extra. The new South American developmental regionalism is finally going beyond the policy space of the multilateral trading system, which, by not setting a priori incompatibility of the integration processes with WTO rules, contributes to strengthen the rule of international law in South America.

Abstract:
My project takes place in Korsten four kilometers north of central Port Elizabeth. Korsten is today known as the industrial center of the city and provides job opportunities throughout the whole region. Central Korsten contains the biggest informal market within Port Elizabeth; it is also functioning as a nodal interchange where buses and minibus taxis provide transport within the city as well as nationwide. In 2010 major changes in the transport system will take place as a part of the 2010 world cup program. The city introduces the new Bus rapid transit system, a transportation system based on trunk buses complimented with minibus taxis. Introducing a new bus-system to Korsten will be a great challenge especially concerning Korstens informal identity and tradition. The informal economy is today an integral part of the South African economy and something that most South Africans come in contact with on daily bases. But it is an economy and movement not measurable or regulated by the government. The informal economy got its own rules and traditions and it flourishes in Korsten. It creates job opportunities as well as a possibility to buy everyday goods to a reasonable price, but it also contributes to a hectic and unstructured environment which gives a chaotic impression. This dissertation highlights the informal tradition and its possibility to be an integral part of the modern Korsten. It investigates the meaning of the public space and what role it plays in our cities and how it can be implemented in Korsten.

Abstract:
In recent years, trade activity in stock markets has increased substantially. This is mainly attributed to the development of powerful computers and intranets connecting traders to markets across the globe. The trades have to be carried out almost instantaneously and the systems in place that handle trades are burdened with millions of transactions a day, several thousand a minute. With increasing transactions the time to execute a single trade increases, and this can be seen as an impact on the performance. There is a need to model the performance of these systems and provide forecasts to give a heads up on when a system is expected to be overwhelmed by transactions. This was done in this study, in cooperation with Cinnober Financial Technologies, a firm which provides trading solutions to stock markets. To ensure that the models developed weren‟t biased, the dataset was cleansed, i.e. operational and other transactions were removed, and only valid trade transactions remained. For this purpose, a descriptive analysis of time series along with change point detection and LOESS regression were used. State space model with Kalman Filtering was further used to develop a time varying coefficient model for the performance, and this model was applied to make forecasts. Wavelets were also used to produce forecasts, and besides this high pass filters were used to identify low performance regions. The State space model performed very well to capture the overall trend in performance and produced reliable forecasts. This can be ascribed to the property of Kalman Filter to handle noisy data well. Wavelets on the other hand didn‟t produce reliable forecasts but were more efficient in detecting regions of low performance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The main subject of the diploma project was to create architecture study for new building of a Gallery for sport aircrafts and their traditions and other equipment that cooperate with this topic. The Gallery is designed in Brno´s Medlanky municipality and it is incorporated on current local sport airport. This project was preceded by studio project on the same area, which included reconstruction and development of this airport area. In this diploma project I was trying to continue with this development and establish a design which would react to my earlier design. The site has a sloped character and it separated from a dense city area. Starting point for the design was to gently touch the landscape and also trying to find certain references directly in the closest surrounding. From the views to surrounding was created the idea to preserve the horizontal lines and with a landscape and constructions demands was created the main idea to continue with the landscape over the spatial structure. The need to cover large-scale exhibit items like aircrafts and other items from this topic led to a starting point of my design. The structure is formed as a spatial truss structure and dominates the exhibition space. Building is connected by program and structure to services and other areas like conference hall, coffee, study room, work room and administration. As a one building it teems mainly from arrival at the airport area when the roofing is an organic, monolithic surface disappearing in surrounding. Abstract:
This master thesis is exploring a possibility of densifying traditional block structure of a city by the design of a multifunctional building. It is located in Brno exactly in Brno centrum city part. The building site is defined by Veveří, Kounicova and Pekárenská streets. On the forth side there is existing block of flats on the Sokolská Street. The design itself is based on the form of a traditional enclosed block of flats, but masses are oriented differently. The basic principle is layering when first two floors are commercially oriented and therefore accessible by public. Living areas are separated by position above. The roof, connecting all of the buildings, is taking role of a traditional courtyard. In this case, it stays visually connected with surrounding street life and newly formed commercial parts. Masses of the complex are reflecting different city structures on each side. It encloses on the side of the Veveří Street which creates undisturbed street corridor. New structure opens more to Kounicova Street and reflects free city pattern of this part.

Abstract:
The submission of this thesis was preceded by a specialised studio „Brněnské nábřeží a kulturní čtvrť Ponava“. This work focused on a complex urban architectural solution to the area around the former “Jaselská kasárna”, the urban context, transport services, the field configuration etc. The thesis follows this project in a section defined by streets U Červeného mlýna, Staňkova and Střední. The goal of the thesis lies in the creation of an intensive goal – a cultural area, which will offer a high-quality space for intergenerational communication and new social experiences and activities. It newly connects the urban part Ponava with the town center of Brno by a high-quality axis for pedestrian and cycling transport. The project of this cultural area arose after a thorough analysis of surrounding, intercity and global relations as a combination of aims: for children – the elementary art school with graphic and dancing fields, for seniors – leisure time center, and for all together - a multifunctional concert hall and a revitalized area of the former industrial zone of furniture production to a multipurpose intergenerational area with a modern art gallery, offices for young businessmen, architects and artists, and a music club in the basement of the gallery.

Pairs trading is a market-neutral investment strategy which matches its long and short investments one pair at a time. Consider two similar stocks which trade at some spread. When the correlation between the two securities become weak, a trader take a long position on underperforming stock, and take a short position on outperforming one. A trader will take advantage from out of equilibrium in the correlation, and make profit as the spread narrows again to some equilibrium value. Based on a state space model approach, we assume the spread follows a mean reverting model observed with Gaussian noise. Kalman Filter method is applied to estimate the model parameters. Predictions from the calibrated model are compared with subsequent observations of the spread to determine the investment decisions. We perform an empirical study for such an investment strategy based the state space model approach. A simulation study is also performed to compare the performance of the proposed investment strategy based on different strategies.

The problem of estimating underlying trends in noisy time series data has been a crucial issue in a variety of disciplines. The trend could be aggregate economic fluctuations, which is often referred to as business cycles in the macroeconomics literature. It could be the efficient price for the market, which is unobserved due to the microstructure noise that summarizes market trading mechanisms.Indeed, trend decomposition is one of the critical steps to understand the nature. In this thesis, we review classical trend decomposition methodologies and study the statistical performance of the state-space models. Also, a day trading strategy based on the state-space model is explored using Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index Futures.

In 2003, under the guidance of Chi-Nan Chen, Minister without Portfolio, the Bureau of Commerce of the Ministry of Economic Affairs launched the Project of Local Industry Trading Centers. The purpose of this project is to place a window for local industries and community constructions to present their uniqueness and therefore becomes the attractions to tourists. Also, it is hoped that through this project, traditional industries be upgraded and local economies be further vitalized. Yilan County was among the five demonstration counties and cities that obtained subsidies for this project in the first phase. The Yilan Railway Station was chosen as the starting point and center of the project implanted. Famous architects from local areas were responsible for the space design of the local industry trading center of Yilan. Moreover, historical buildings recorded in the official documents were taken as the main components of this center, including Yilan Lobby, Tourist Service Centre, and Yilan Wholesale Base. The fieldwork for this research was carried out in the form of interviews with key persons, observations, and participatory investigations. This research aims at exploring the space production process of Yilan Local Industry Trading Center, and understanding the visions of each community and conflicts that arise in relation to the construction process. It was found that Yilan Local Industry Trading Center, serving as a public space, has gained wide recognition, however, its relationship to the life of the local people is curiously weak. The Center has even aroused criticism and doubts. The reasons may include a lack of supportive conditions, lack of active and creative marketing campaigns, and the doubts from local people on the form of space use. In light of this dilemma, the researcher planned and held a student creative exhibition of Yilan Wholesale Base, as well as observing and giving out questionnaires in order to collect the local people’s views on the exchange center of local industry. At the same time, it played as a medium to understand whether the local people’s feelings towards and understanding of this center has changed, in addition to its possible impact on the dialogue between people and space. Through the process of this research, it is realized that space is an entity that embodies utilitarian, economic, and symbolic recognition. It is especially true with public space whose interpretation should not be limited to and dominated by public sectors or professionals because it is closely related to the general public’s affections and perceptions. Furthermore, space recognition involves the common perceptions and identifications to the satisfactory utilizing, economic interests sharing, and symbolic forms of such space, rather than being a definition merely by one-way and elite aesthetics interpretation. The experience of Yilan Local Industry Trading Center highlights the issue of the publicness of space, which indeed is only the tip of the iceberg during the development of public space in Taiwan. It is seen that there is a lack of public participation in the issue of space. All too often, the emphasis is placed on professionalism and aesthetics, which brings forth disconnection between society and culture. Located in the center of Yilan, this local industry trading center has long been the local people’s concern in relation to history. Therefore, with this center, it is possible to induce a process that encourages recognition and participation that in turn gradually connects the people’s life. This possibility has already been initially proved in this research.

Abstract:
The aim of the diploma thesis is to define a specific phenomenon bound to the current consumer society, which by its expression considers certain values and relations to the material world as necessary or, on the contrary, unnecessary. At the same time, it examines the boundary between consumer goods that we use on a daily basis and the subjects that have become part of our personality. These findings are demonstrated on specific examples. Telecommunication progress and its impact on today's consumer society in all aspects of nowadays lifestyle has become the starting point for the diploma work. Phone as an artifact has become part of our life with an ever more personal approach. This phenomenon is grasped theoretically, creatively and as an opportunity for pedagogical activity and research. The pedagogical intention is not only suggested but also verified and reflected in praxis.
