Full textWhether real or symbolic, the stained image displayed by some unclean old women is the result of a historic, social and family-set assignment. The singular strength of character shown by these women has placed them in the position of being perceived as 'the Other', bringing about a phenomenon of group attraction. Seeing the old woman, sensing her smell, touching her, meeting her at her home and listening to her: these are experiences like rites of passage, that modern society does not provide anymore. But these experiences are still present in our everyday life as a response to an intimate, mythical and societal need. Like a mirror, these women have embodied the multiple aspects of the ‘old woman’, as a character found in oral literature where ethics and the search for dignity are essential. Talking about "local matters", in Morvan of 20th -21st, speaking in regional language (patois) and in gentle terms about these old women so different from ourselves, creates a platform of resistance against dominant references and constitutes a collective way to feel free and a helpful diversion to be able to accept History

Full textThe aim of this work is to produce a catalogue of songs in the Breton language transmitted orally, and to establish a classification method with multiple entries (titles, themes, singers, areas where collected, field workers, bibliographical references) in order to facilitate the access to the material, particularly to non-specialists: researches in other fields, comparison with other countries, singers who wish to improve their knowledge and to compare different versions. This first study is an analysis of about 5000 songs which correspond to 1800 types. Apart from the identifying entries mentioned above, each song is the subject of a summary in French, accompanied by bibliographical references of the different versions, of explanatory notes and references. In order to precise the process which led to the choice of the corpus songs, a 220 pages introduction refers to the notion of popular and traditional in the particular context of lower Brittany and places the songs in its past and contemporary society context. To these general notions are added comments and descriptions of the main characteristic: authors, dating issues, literary characteristics, genre and functions, themes, styles and techniques, musical characteristics, areas of Brittany. A comparison of these notions, studied by other researchers, in the French language allows the highlighting of similarities and differences. Some examples show the still living character of the traditional process in Brittany. The study is completed with a bibliography of about 1900 references describing the contents
Bourmalo, Laetitia. "Analyse linguistique du discours des chansons de tradition orale du pays de Guérande." Nantes, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007NANT3037.
Full textThe aim of the thesis is to analyse the discourse of folk songs of Guérande, area of Brittany, France. This study is based on Guériff's collection. It makes use of the discourse linguistic analysis, which is an approach at the junction of semantic theory and discourse analysis. As a theoretical objective, the research validate a semantic model of lexical meaning. By looking at the value framework contained in the discourse, including how it is built and conveyed, the thesis analyses also the specific constituents of the studied discourse. For that purpose, an argumentative and modal approach is used to study the discursive construction of the two semantic representations: ‘soldat’ and ‘mariage’. The results lead to develop a set of new ideas linking semantic mechanisms and discourse functions, which makes up a sound basis for further ethnomusicology researches

Full textFor both linguistic and ethnology, the main distinction between the oral and the writing is based on the way of memorizing and transmitting cultural events. The writing, view as externalisation of intern memory, would allow to "plan" the message and to memorize it verbatim. In this thesis, I attempt to study the relationship between type of memory and medium from Brittany oral literature. A workfield in Brittany and a transdisciplinary approach (sociolinguistic, ethnologic and psychologic) allowed showing that oral (i. E. Message elaboration and restitution) does not seem to necessary imply an exclusive reconstructive or semantic memory type. The memory seems to be linked to the context in which it forms and builds up and to the domain-object views as having a specific organisation, which implies a way of memorizing

Full textThe stupid man, who is an emblematic figure of facetious folk tales, demonstrate the inhuman fate of those who cannot free themselves from incestuous ties. Monster characters, who are the manifestation of an archaic psyche, and poweful boys, who are doomed to be confined to melancholic regression, share characteristics similar to this example of infant narcissism. As a counterpart to these figures are the boys of Pezenas who, during Carnival, go through ritualistic games with their body, with words and with death that are regressive and transgressive, and from which they celebrate the self-generation of their identity

Schmitt, Hubert. "Chanson populaire et identité limousine : 1900-1950." Paris 4, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA040210.
Full textOur purpose consists in searching identity marks in a rural land through its traditional songs during the first half of the twentieth century. The land of Limousin, part of the west foothills of French Massif Central and devoted to breeding, has an irregular ground and an unstable climate. In the early twentieth century, unable to provide food for its increasing population, Limousin was proned to emigration like many other large european lands. As a North-Occitan country, Limousin is a patchwork of native people, strongly attached to their roots, who bear in their memory, talks, sounds and rhythms, which support traditions, customs and consequently country songs orally relayed till nowadays. What are the marks, tenuous but strong, that remain unconsciously in the mind of the people within these songs, "ever" heard, that one extract from the memory ? What are the links being tied between speaking and singing lines which still stand out in the rhythms and sounds of everyday language ?

Full textThis study examines a source which has been often neglected by historians up until now: songs from the oral tradition. It considers how this documentation can be used in order to renew our knowledge of Breton society between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries. Breton songs must be analysed by comparing them constantly to written and iconographic archives, which usually form the basis of historical research. The comparison with judicial archives is particularly relevant and has been strongly developed. This methodological approach is completed by an application of conclusions in a large field of research including material culture, social and political behaviour, mobility of people and ideas and religious attitudes. This study lies at the intersection of several scientific heritages : it is first and foremost linked to a historical approach, but it is opened to other disciplines such as ethnology
