This essay concerns Purple Hibiscus and Kambili's emotional development, and explores how violence, submission and emotional dependence along with a traditional feminine gender role can hinder acknowledgement of trauma. I propose that Kambili is encouraged to take on a culturally expected feminine gender role, and her submissive disposition is discussed and connected to her constant search for a father figure. The notion of personal and collective postcolonial trauma is explained and applied to contextualise her inability to question either her father or the political situation in Nigeria. I r

This thesis explores the notion of opposition in the Sonetti romaneschi by the Roman poet Giuseppe Gioachino Belli (1791-1863). The eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus), a small anadromous smelt (Family Osmeridae) found only along the Northwest Pacific Coast, is poorly understood. Many spawning populations have suffered declines but as their historic status is relatively unknown and the fisheries poorly documented, it is difficult to study the contributing factors. This thesis provides a survey of eulachon fisheries throughout its geographical range and three analyses aimed at improving our understanding of past and present fisheries, coast-wide abundance status, and the factors which may be impacting these populations.

An aural analysis of bel canto: traditions and interpretations as preserved through selected sound recordings. The thesis addresses the lack of an aural appreciation of bel canto operatic traditions. Further it asserts that sound recordings are invaluable in examining aspects of improvisation and ornamentation of the melodic line that are characteristic of this tradition. A detailed aural analysis also provides valuable and unique insights into the bel canto techniques demonstrated by the performers as perceived aurally. Romanian Folk Dances, composed in 1915, was one of his great piano pieces based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania.Two years later, i.e. in 1917, it was rearranged into an orchestral ensemble. Dans cette thèse, nous nous proposons d’investiguer les signaux expérimentaux provenant des transmissions par courroie, afin d’envisager par exemple le diagnostic de la tension. N’étant pas issu du domaine de la Mécanique, nous présentons donc une bibliographie exhaustive et thématique sur la théorie et l’expérimentation dans les systèmes transmissions par courroie. Le résumé de ce travail a permis de choisir une approche de modélisation mécanique correspondant au mieux aux conditions réelles de fonctionnement de notre système.
