Abstract:
The subject of this research is traditional folk decorative and applied art in the context of modern society. The authors reviews the factors that affected the formation of this art form, the role of collective creative experience, the canon for preserving archaic images, symbols and manufacturing technique. The article reveals the conditions of familiarizing youth with the folk tradition, indicating the importance of continuity of generations. Since each artwork is the synthesis of tradition and creativity, attention is drawn to the possibility of interpreting traditional experience in the products of craftsmen. By referring to the facts from the history of the Romanov’s pottery and toy craft, the author provides examples of the emergence of new plotlines in the conditions of changing sociocultural situation, and analyzes their correspondence with the tradition. The application of dialectical method demonstrates fusions of the tradition and novelties in folk art of the past and modernity. The authors’ contribution consists in identification of the causes of the current crisis state of traditional folk decorative and applied art. The article analyzes various measures, including the creation of manufacturing groups in the XX century, which were aimed at its preservation. The experience of the previous generations of professional and folk artisans allows tracing the peculiarities in the development of crafts, such as correlation between the traditional and innovative. The authors examines the necessary conditions for continuity of traditions of folk culture in modern civilization, which requires deliberate actions.

Zhang, Zuotang. "An ethnography of traditional rural folk funeral practice in northwestern China." Thesis, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3637357.

Full text
Abstract:

This ethnographic study will analyze data collected through field-based observations, primary ritual texts, and locally conducted interviews of the yin-yang practitioners in the three small villages of Fanmagou, Qijiazhuang, and Wangdazhuang in northwestern China. The practice referred to as yin-yang in this region is part of an archaic folk religious system that can be traced back to at least the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Despite its deep cultural roots, it is becoming endangered due to the impact of national policies (governing religion and culture) and the general adaptation to modernity in China. Due to the localized nature of this cultural system, the main research method used will be qualitative ethnographic description, with a Geertzian "thick description" approach to interpretive analysis. The collected data is roughly divided into three categories: (1) transcriptions of interviews with yin-yang practitioners and other local villagers; (2) video tapes, photographs, and field notes of local religious rituals, specifically memorial and burial rites that are led by the yin-yang practitioners, and (3) my own translations of yin-yang scriptural texts that are used in leading the rituals themselves, as well as for the teaching and training of young yin-yang apprentices. The interpretive ethnography that is produced from these rich primary sources will also be considered for its curriculum applications in two primary higher education contexts: 1) As a rich primary source for courses in Chinese culture and language—conducted in either Chinese or English language context, and 2) As a source of engaging and culturally relevant texts for courses in content-based ESOL for Chinese students (in China presumably).

Abstract:
The theme of this work is the interrelation of art music composers with musical cultures around the world, from the 20th century onwards. The focus concerns on the compositional aspects that were developed from this exchange. The main research cutting is the production of the Brazilian composers from the 80s. Additionally, other periods were commented on, to deal with the processes involved in the cultural interrelations in a broader way, be it in terms of inspiration, influence, appropriation and representation of elements of theses cultures, or in what concerns to conceptual questions of affectivity, originality, authenticity, identity and sociocultural domination. For this purpose, primarily, bottlenecks related to the modes of interrelation and incorporation, as well as to the terminologies found in the literature were discussed. Next, a contextual panorama of the occurrences of these exchanges in the erudite repertoire, national and international, was proposed. Finally, a series of Brazilian authors\' work analyses is presented, composed in the last 35 years. It is intended to demonstrate that both the creative possibilities and the critical discussion of the issues arising from these encounters among cultures expand in equal proportion, be it in its potentiality and complexity, or in its paradoxical and controversial character. And that happens in a context of extreme cultural interaction, entangled by the plurality of ideas related to the processes of globalization.

Knox, Daniel Leonard. "Regional and national cultures in north-eastern Scotland : tradition, language and practice in the constitution of folk cultures." Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3655/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the processes of the formation and re-formation of folk cultures in north-eastern Scotland. Focusing on the area surrounding Aberdeen, I am interested in the historical and contemporary relationships between Highland and north-eastern versions of Scottishness. During the 1990's, a burgeoning north-eastern regional and cultural self-awareness, centred on the "Doric" dialect, was evidenced in the founding of the Elphinstone Research Institute at the University of Aberdeen, and in the founding of an annual Doric Festival. This institutionalisation has taken place in a situation in which Scottish national traditions have remained popular in the region and the Scottish nation has experienced a greater degree of political autonomy. The continued reproduction of both Scottishness and north-easternness is resultant of the ways in which culture and language have been mobilised, politicised and legitimised through the erection and operation of institutional frameworks. The role of expert and enthusiast knowledges in the propagation of cultural trends is analysed here through an exploration of the spectacularisation and banalisation of tradition. In particular, I unpack the tensions that claims for authenticity create with regard to the ballad and literary traditions of the north-east, and to the Highland Games and Gatherings of the same region. Exploring joint actions and knowledges, I demonstrate the efficacy of performative language and embodied practice in communicating, stabilising and normalising rhetorical ideas concerning Scottish cultures. As the contingent factors that give language and practice variable meanings become fixed through citation, the formation of dominant readings is enabled. The normalisation of spectacular events is crucial in the communication of authenticity and the establishment and recreation of national or regional identities. As perceived authenticity substitutes for objectivity in the popular imagination, everyday apprehensions of Scottishness and north- easternness are both made more durable and infused with a strong legitimacy by their very performance and naming.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the presence of the occult-flavoured esoteric content within the Folk Horror genre; where pagan entities evoke forms of devil worship, witchcraft, and magic(k). It also considers the concept of Hauntology. Hauntology was specifically referring to the ‘Spectre of Marx’ as Jacques Derrida called it in his 1993 book of the same title. It is now commonly used to account for our own cultural, and sometimes moral, relationships with British artefacts from the 1970s as well as artwork that deals with the concept of lost futures. In this context, it is largely a word denoting relationships in and towards 1970s British culture, especially on film and television, and how this reflects social elements in both the period and in our need to look back towards it. The chapter then looks at two separate problems regarding Folk Horror: the resurgence, with hindsight, of interest in occultism and other forms of ‘occulture’ in counter-culture film and television; and the presence of an urban setting and a concept in a genre which has been shown to rely on both rural settings and sociological isolation, two things which, in traditional cinematic practices, are difficult and relatively uncommon in urban-set dramas.

Abstract:
Cultural systems are grouped into high culture, folk culture and popular culture. High cultural, scientific, philosophical, aesthetic information, etc. Folk culture is based on folklore information from the past day. Popular culture represents the degraded and dissolved state of traditional cultures, various subculture areas, which have failed after modernization efforts. The aim of the study is to reveal the influence of young musical genres on the entrepreneurial tendencies. The first method used in the research is the questionnaire survey for senior students studying in the university business and economics. According to the survey data, questionnaires were distributed out of a total of 350 students, only to the evaluation of the survey of 311 eligible. The most important findings of the research can be summarized as follows. While 6,1% of the "youth of higher education" who participated in the survey preferred "high culture product" music; 10,6% were "folk culture products" music; and 83,3% preferred "popular culture product" music. The "entrepreneurship tendencies", which are the main aim of the subjects of "education for young people" receiving basic courses in economics and business administration, were found to be 131,5 (Min 36, Max.180). According to the research findings, in the direction of the basic assumption of the study, "entrepreneurial tendencies" of students who prefer music, which is a high cultural product, are higher than others. The sort of "entrepreneurial tendencies" is followed by popular genres and popular music genres.

Abstract:
The context of globalization along with the development of electronic media has opened a new era for folklore in general as well as forms of linguistic composition of folk literature in particular. In addition to the form of composing and keeping media documents in the traditional way, the Internet explosion has dominated the main spaces of communal life and has gradually changed the mode of human interaction. Cyber space is considered as a tool to convey traditional values, to create many new cultural activities, and to be a place to circulate folk cultural works in contemporary society, in which folk poetry (Ca dao) is one. Modern folk poetry studies are still a controversial issue in academic circles in Vietnam, but with the dominance of today's Internet communication technology, the emergence of lyrics rhymes circulated on the Internet is a remarkable and inevitable phenomenon in the context of development of various forms of "reformed", "processing", "parody" lyrics, songs, poems according to the direction of humor and entertainment rather than focusing on aesthetics and art. From a linguistic cultural approach, this article aims to discuss modern folk poetry on such issues as: Why did such folk poetry come about? How would we circulate or share this poetry on the Internet and to approach folk culture in an era of dominance of visual culture (TV, video, film, photography) and Online culture; how does socio-economic change on modern folk poetry impact on the Internet in terms of thinking innovatively, and how does it tend to break traditional cognitive structures due to the diverse forms of reflection and reality in modern society?

Abstract:
Cationic polypeptide proteins found in the seeds of the tropical plant Moringa oleifera have coagulation efficiencies similar to aluminum and ferric sulfates without their recalcitrant nature. Although these proteins possess great potential to augment or replace traditional coagulants in water treatment, harvesting active protein from seeds is laborious and not cost-effective. Here, we describe an alternative method to express and secrete active M. oleifera coagulant protein (MO) in Bacillus subtilis. A plasmid library containing the MO gene and 173 different types of secretory signal peptides was created and cloned into B. subtilis strain RIK1285. Fourteen of 440 clones screened were capable of secreting MO with yields ranging from 55 to 122 mg/L of growth medium. The coagulant activity of the highest MO secreting clone was evaluated when grown on Luria broth, and cell-free medium from the culture was shown to reduce turbidity in a buffered kaolin suspension by approximately 90% compared with controls without the MO gene. The clone was also capable of secreting active MO when grown on a defined synthetic wastewater supplemented with 0.5% tryptone. Cell-free medium from the strain harboring the MO gene demonstrated more than a 2-fold reduction in turbidity compared with controls. Additionally, no significant amount of MO was observed without the addition of the synthetic wastewater, suggesting that it served as a source of nutrients for the effective expression and translocation of MO into the medium.
