Person, Raymond F. Biblical Historiography as Traditional History. Edited by Danna Nolan Fewell. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199967728.013.5.

Abstract:
Although generic distinctions existed in the ancient world, biblical scholars too often overemphasize the distinction betweenepicandhistory, neglecting how they have similarities as interpretations of the past. Ancient historiography was typically read aloud; therefore, biblical historiography (analogous to oral traditional epic) occurs in textual plurality and multiformity. Thus, biblical historiography is an example of what John Miles Foley calls “traditional history” (2010), which differs from “factual” history, but nevertheless can be understood as a “true” interpretation of the past. Abstract:
This article discusses the recent historiography of religion from the traditional field of church history. The emphasis shifts from the institutional and official to the quotidian and informal. The stress on popular religiosity comes across in the debate over syncretism discussed in the first section of the article. Did Catholicism absorb African and indigenous beliefs, in practice if not theologically, to form a sort of Latin American spiritual stew, as the Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz once put it? Did this synthesis become more Christian with time? Did non-European belief systems surv

Abstract:
This chapter looks at how the Song dynasty (960–1279) reconsolidated central power and eliminated the provincial regimes that had developed in the wake of Tang decentralization. During the first thirty years after 960, they fostered astute policies that promoted and took advantage of continuing economic expansion. To administer their new polity, the Song emperors recruited through the examination system a new class of bureaucratic elite that Western writings on China often call the ‘literati’. The aristocrats of Tang had given way to the merchants and bureaucrats of Song. However, although the

This article presents a narrative history of the Jews between the destruction of the Second Temple (70 ce) and the Arab conquest of Palestine (c.640 ce). After the destruction, Palestine was made into a standard Roman province in a way which at least curtailed the Jews' traditional autonomy. Nevertheless, the Jews rebelled again, with disastrous results. The Diaspora Revolt (115–17 ce) seems to have ended in the decimation or destruction of the Jewish settlements in Egypt, Libya, and several other places, while the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–5) brought an end to the Jews' hopes for the restoration

Abstract:
This prologue examines overarching issues about women's film history, feminism, and the researching and writing of film history. Foregrounding historiographic problems, it explores the researching and writing about women “in” and “as” “history” in the cinema century by focusing on the critical-historical approach, which deals with the problem of “the history of history” —the approach used to expose the never-neutral amnesias of traditional historiography and to counter its claim to objectivity with the inevitability of its “fictions.” The chapter discusses the concept of becoming historical ot

This chapter focuses on the historiographical difficulties entailed in telling Ovid’s story. It analyses the entry on Ovid in Pierre Bayle’s biographical encyclopaedia, Dictionnaire historique et critique. Bayle surveys the historiographical tradition of the Lives of Ovid and, in line with the intentions of the Dictionnaire, which was initially conceived to reveal errors in scholarship, identifies the limitations of many of the sources. Through close reading, this chapter examines how Bayle reads Ovid, situating this within the hermeneutical debates about reading Bayle. Bayle’s analysis of Ovi
