Abstract:
Despite the development of assisted reproductive technology (ART), it is difficult to increase the implantation rate. In Korea, Traditional Korean Medicine, including herbal medicine, is an important component of infertility treatment. Korean medical doctors who are treating infertility often use herbal medicine to promote implantation. In this article, as one of the research works on modernization of Traditional Korean Medicine, we investigated the experimental studies to clarify the effects of herbal medicines that are traditionally used to promote pregnancy. We searched for experimental studies over the past 10 years of improvement of endometrial receptivity in herbal medicine using six domestic and international sites. We analyzed 11 studies that meet the selection criteria. We found that herbal medicines demonstrably improved endometrial receptivity and increased pregnancy rates.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This Project is a sculptural and spatial response to the concept of the Are Korero (house of history and learning) within the Paepae Ariki, Taputapuatea. In considering the philosophical and cultural basis that might encourage structure, the project investigates the re introduction of tribal art that might assist cultural revival and security, this tribal structure providing a platform and focus for its expression. The implications of such a proposition are twofold, on the one hand, the revivification of innovative, ancient cultural expressions to assist the concepts progress, and on the other, the realisation of a Pacific architecture to confirm, actuate and create, a new Polynesian reality. The thesis is 80% practice based work, accompanied by 20% exegesis.

Abstract:
Heejo Kim (1920-2001) is one of the most prominent Korean composers of the twentieth century. He is primarily known for his works that incorporate aspects of traditional Korean music. However, at the same time, his efforts in choral arrangements, especially of Korean folk tunes are highly acclaimed by professional choirs and conductors. The purpose of this study is to provide performance guidance on Heejo Kim's choral work, Bat-no-rae, by presenting his biographical background, discussing the use of traditional Korean rhythmic patterns (Jangdan) and modes, and the appropriate application of traditional ornamentations.

Full text
Abstract:
Among native Korean choral composers, Hyowon Woo has emerged as one of the most significant representatives of choral genre, both in Korea and internationally. She has created a new style of choral music that combines traditional Korean musical elements with contemporary Western compositional techniques, in a synthesis that generates new sonorities and effects. Her choral music falls into three basic categories: music employing direct quotation of Korean folk tunes or other elements, which produce typical Korean sonorities; music using Western practices, which produce modern and Western flavors; and music combining Korean traditional methods with modern Western concepts. Hyowon Woo’s unique contribution to contemporary Korean choral music is ideally represented by her Gloria, which will form the basis for this study. Because traditional Korean music culture has such a strong presence and influence on her choral compositions, detailed knowledge of these elements are essential for the study and performance of her work. The combination of traditional Korean music and Western contemporary techniques lies at the core of her compositional style, and is the principal focus of this study. A detailed understanding of these stylistic elements, both Korean and Western, and how they work together to achieve the composer’s purpose and vision, is vital to achieving an informed performance of this work.  This study is intended to supply the conductor these needed tools and to add to the small but growing body of literature related to the performance practice not only of Woo’s significant body of choral compositions, but of Korean choral music in general.

Abstract:
Since the 1960s, several gifted Korean composers, including perhaps most notably Young Jo Lee (b. 1943), have been internationally acclaimed for their work. In Western countries, however, there has been a scarcity of academic studies examining the artistry of the music of these Korean composers. Nonetheless, as one of today's most recognized composers in Korea, Young Jo Lee has been invited to numerous international concerts, conferences, and festivals where his works have been played and discussed. A salient feature of his compositions is the fusion of Korean traditional music and the elements of Western compositions, such as in, for one distinctive example, his piano composition, Piano Honza Nori. This musical study describes and analyzes how Lee integrates Korean traditional elements with Western musical ideas in Piano Honza Nori. Results of this study will contribute to the limited literature on the analysis of contemporary piano composition that integrates Korean traditional elements.

Abstract:
Gideon Gee Bum Kim is an internationally-acclaimed contemporary Korean-Canadian composer. Kim has utilized traditional Korean music with Western composition techniques in some of his works. Kim created his own style by incorporating traditional Korean musical elements such as the scale, rhythmic diversity, syncopation, variation, ornamentation, and the progression of melody into a body of music that is otherwise contemporary and Western. The purpose of this study is to develop a performance guide for Gideon Gee Bum Kim's Kangkangsullae for string trio. Kangkangsullae trio is based on Korean historical, cultural and musical influences. I give a detailed historical and cultural background for this work and demonstrate how Kim integrated Western compositional techniques with traditional Korean music. My emphasis is on defining specific characteristics of traditional Korean music which will provide several points toward understanding Kim's compositional style.

Abstract:
Children and Adolescents with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD) are often involved in aggression, acting out, bullying, violence, substance abuse, and juvenile crime. However, the limited Korean studies have focused primarily on bullying of students with developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore contributing factors to traditional bullying and cyberbullying in Korean children and adolescents with EBD. The current study surveyed 112 students with EBD between ages of 10 and 15 and their parents (guardians). The results revealed that internalizing problem behaviors including anxious/depression, withdrawal/depression, and somatic problems significantly affected traditional bullying victimization of Korean students with EBD. The peer support was a significant factor affecting cyberbullying victimization. Furthermore, the maternal psychological control was a meaningful factor affecting perpetration at school and in cyber world. Based on the findings, the present study described implications regarding prevention and intervention programs for addressing traditional bullying and cyberbullying victimization and perpetration.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Aesthetics has a theological calling: The beauty (or ugliness) in the world and art incites us to long for the divine eternal beauty. The earthly beauty is revelatory and analogous to the beauty of God. Imagination, i.e. making an image, whether mental or physical, is an inherent faculty of human beings who were created in the image of God. It is an insuppressible human activity. Besides, the search for meaning, which is a universal human quest for the purpose in life, is a concern common in both religion and art. Aesthetics (art and beauty) thereby should be a theological locus, a graceful partner of theological dialogue. But how much are aesthetic dimensions incorporated in the Korean Presbyterian theological/liturgical context? Visual art, imagery and symbolism are considered marginal or even dangerous in the Korean Presbyterian churches while preaching is given a dominant position in their worship services. As a result, they are losing sight of the essential implications that aesthetic, embodied experiences of art, imagery and symbolism have for liturgical richness. Art, imagery and symbolism are fundamental components in Christian life and worship as demonstrated with numerous evidences throughout the Christian history. They are never discordant with the tradition of the Word, but rather, have critical importance to theology for five reasons – the human as embodied being, a manifestation of imago Dei, the integrative characteristic of our thinking and perceiving, the Bible as book of images, and the contemporary culture of images. Against this backdrop, aesthetic expressions of art, imagery and symbolism are claimed to have five features significant to Christian worship: The revelatory power of the beauty in nature or works of art displays something of God; aesthetic expressions of art, imagery and symbolism speak to the human totality as an intelligent-affective-sensate-corporeal being; people necessarily become participants in the performative nature of art and its claim of truth; the beauty, truth and goodness manifested in works of art may be a reminder of our responsibility to work for the transformation of the world; an artwork can serve an eloquent mode of hoping for the present absent reality of the Kingdom of God. In terms of these qualities, an implication that aesthetic experiences in worship have the power to reframe, taking us to the encounter with the divine beauty, goodness and truth, is drawn, and a fusion of the verbal and non-verbal is claimed conclusively.

Full text
Abstract:
Isang Yun (1917-1995) embraced a masterful combination of two elements derived from his life: his Korean cultural upbringing and Western musical traditions. This dissertation explores Yun's distinctive style through an analysis of his Kontraste: Zwei Stücke für Violine Solo. Following the introduction (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 contains a brief biography of Isang Yun, and explores the compositions of his Korean period (1917-1955) and his European period (1956-1995). It also discusses how Yun's musical styles changed during these two periods as a result of important life events and due to cultural and political influences. Chapter 3 examines Korean instruments such as Kayakem, Hae-Kem, and Pak; discusses Nonghyun (traditional string techniques of ornamentation in Korean music); and introduces Korean performance techniques. This chapter also provides explanations of these concepts, illustrated through various examples. A subsequent discussion illuminates Yin-Yang theory and Jeong-Jung-Dong, both elements of Taoist philosophy that influenced Yun's compositional style. This is followed by explanations of Hauptton and Umspielung, two compositional techniques that Yun developed and employed in Kontraste. Yun created the idea of Hauptton to reflect the Korean traditional concept of a single note. He used the term Umspielung ("playing around" in German) to describe his interpretation of the four traditional techniques of Nonghyun within a Western notational framework. In Chapter 5, analysis of Kontraste reveals how the piece's contrasting elements represent the concepts of Yin-Yang and Jeong-Jung-Dong, and shows how the violin imitates the sounds of Korean traditional instruments and instrumental technique. Yun's adaption of Korean traditional performance techniques to the violin in Kontraste is aimed at combining East and West and producing a new aesthetic.

Abstract:
The Korean Pavilion was held at Venice Biennale’s Centenary, in 1995. This essay reconstructs historical events that led to the creation of a National pavilion for the whole Korean peninsula, which eventually found its place in the traditional site of the Biennale: the ‘Giardini’ area. The analysis of its exhibitions and the story of the pavilion mesh and intertwine. During these twenty-four years, between 1995 and 2019, the Korean contemporary art changed and today it is so different from the typical Orientalist idea of Korean traditional art. Identity issue is leitmotiv of those art shows and of a generation of artists born after the Korean war, traumatised by political fast changes, in a different economical and social scene. The Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale is a proof of this artistic and social journey.

Abstract:
Korean society has shifted from agriculture to industry in the past 40 years. This rapid change in the economy has affected the life style of Koreans. The majority of children living in Korean industrialized cities have limited access to the outdoor activity in natural settings, which negatively impacts the physical, emotional, and social development of Korean children. Scholars in childhood education identify significant changes in housing, foods and eating habits, and family structure, which dilute Korean culture and traditions and hinder the healthy development of children. Teachers in South Korea today design learning environments and implement instructional lesson plans to combat the effects of urbanization, industrialization, and globalization. One of the notable lesson units is Kim-jang, integral to the Korean culture, which engages children, families and the community in activities through gardening and a variety of other activities. The Kim-jang unit is designed to accommodate intrinsic learning modalities of young children for hands-on, active learning experiences; to integrate standards-based content areas to strengthen skills and build knowledge; to deepen interpersonal and intrapersonal insight; and to, first and foremost, enhance traditional cultural values and practices as they are lost through rapid industrialization.

Abstract:
Confucian cultural traditions in South Korea have fueled a passion for education that has driven learners to excel in literacy and mathematics. At the same time, it has led to extreme competition that may not be economically viable long term. Cultural norms emphasizing conformity have also prevented widespread acceptance of creative learning styles and diverse opinions. Within this article, Korean educational issues are explored in relation to both past cultural traditions and contemporary trends. Analysis suggests that new hybrid models of leadership and education should be utilized to honor past traditions, while simultaneously cultivating the democratic skills needed in today's global society.

Abstract:
With the continued proliferation of digital technologies, students are absorbing more information than ever. As a result, the relationship between students and teachers in a traditional face-to-face classroom can be limiting. As the flipped classroom approach has emerged, the classroom culture has changed. The active environment, interactive approach, and content-specific flipped learning has great potential for the ESL-learning context, especially for Korean college students. Korean college students were accustomed to the face-to-face, top-down structure of learning, and flipped learning provided an opportunity for them to look at and experience learning differently. More specifically, the top-down relationship between teacher and student shifted into a more balanced and interactive learning culture. The positive aspects of flipped learning were beneficial for the Korean ESL college students. This chapter features a case study of a college English language conversation class in Korea and explores how to set up a flipped classroom through web-based tools in order to keep the students motivated and generate a participatory environment.

Medicinal plants are a great source of medicine for treating various human ailments. Traditional use of herbal medicine, which was developed within an ethnic group before the development and spread of modern science, is the very basis and an integral part of various cultures. Different medicinal systems throughout the globe are still operational and use natural herbs for treating diseases. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, Kampo, Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), and Unani are some commonly found traditional medicinal systems in use today. They are used directly, or their secondary metabolites are used as anti-bacterial, antifungal, immunomodulators, anti-hair fall, and multiple other purposes. However, their blood purification properties prevent blood from toxicity. Hundreds of medicinal plants are used in Ayurveda for blood purification, particularly plants which are astringent or bitter (pungent or sharp tastes). In addition, medicinal herbs do not have side effects.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 is the first of two chapters that outline and analyze the development of North Korea’s kaeryang akki—“improved” or “reformed” versions of traditional musical instruments. It identifies formational influences from the Soviet Union, China, and elsewhere. The underlying ideology, which holds that Korean instruments should match Western counterparts, but that Western instruments must be subservient to the Korean soundworld, is critiqued. Key musicians and institutions, and music pedagogy are introduced. Data from published resources is matched to the author’s detailed work with key performers in Pyongyang, interviews with musicologists, and evidence gleaned from notations and recordings. Abstract:
The article is devoted to the situation with the activities of different sectarian organizations in the Republic of Korea. There is a huge amount of information in our world that is not always possible to be objectively analyzed. It helps some sectarian organizations to promote their principles and ideas. This is especially true for the Republic of Korea, where the religious worldview is one of the most important components of the national mentality. Freedom of religion is highly valued in the country, sectarian ideas have the right to spread, and sects are practically not regulated by the state. According to rough estimates of Korean sociologists, today there are about 300 non-traditional religious sects in the Republic of Korea. These organizations disseminate their sectarian propaganda through music, books, marches, leaflets, active recruitment and the Internet.

----- Traditional timing in the modern age ----- The Lyceum in Eger, while being one of the most known Monuments of the city, plays an import- ant role in the history of science. When it was founded, it became one of the best equipped observatories in Europe. Knowing this, our goal is to use its equipment to build a complex system that is able to determine the exact time of the local noon, using the meridian line that was created during the construction of the building. While our primary goal was to research and realize how a system like that could work at its core, a logging feature has also been implemented in the system for later reuse of the data.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of the Pressure – Temperature (P-T) limit curve is to prevent a failure of reactor pressure vessel during operation of reactor coolant system. In Korea, P-T limit curves have to meet 10CFR50 Appendix G [1] according to Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Notification 2017-20. The P-T limit curves have been traditionally evaluated based on the beltline region which is most affected by neutron irradiation. However due to the geometric discontinuity, the inside corner regions of the vessel nozzles are the most highly stressed regions of reactor vessel. These higher stresses can potentially result in more restrictive P-T limits, even if the reference nil ductility transition temperatures (RTNDT) for these components are not as high as those of the reactor vessel beltline shell materials that have simpler geometries. In 2014, the NRC issued Regulatory Issue Summary (RIS) 2014-11 [2], which require the consideration of reactor vessel nozzles in P-T limits curve generation. In this paper, P-T limit curves for Korea optimized power reactor (OPR-1000) nozzles at the end of license were evaluated. And then these curves were compared to the traditional beltline region P-T limit curves in order to verify which curve is more limiting.

Full text
Abstract:
The reactor vessel internals (RVI) of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) must be installed precisely in the reactor vessel (RV) according to the requirements for levelness, orientation and vertical alignments for its proper functions and structural integrity. For the precise installation, deformation of the RV should be controlled during the RVI installation. Traditionally, the RVI has been installed in the RV after the completion of welding work for large bore pipings in the reactor coolant system (RCS). To reduce installation time, the concurrent installation of the RVI and RCS pipings is investigated. This paper describes the feasibility study on the concurrent installation including the Finite Element Method (FEM) analyses of the RV deformation due to the welding and heat treatment of the pipings. Based on the feasibility study results, the optimum schedule of the RVI installation in parallel with the installation of the cross-over leg pipings (reactor coolant pump inlet pipings) and confirmation measurement locations are developed. Thereby the concurrent installation will be applied to the nuclear power plants under construction in Korea, and it is expected to reduce installation period of 2 months compared to the traditional sequential installation method.

Ustabaş, Ayfer, and Özgür Ömer Ersin. "The Effects of R&D and High Technology Exports on Economic Growth: A Comparative Cointegration Analysis for Turkey and South Korea." In International Conference on Eurasian Economies. Eurasian Economists Association, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.36880/c07.01475.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of technology and research and development (R&D) on economic development through international trade has been discussed in many studies. However, the empirical studies focusing on the role of high technology exports has been limited. The study aims at filling this gap by evaluating the relationship between high technology exports and GDP per capita levels with structural unit root tests and cointegration methodologies for Turkey and South Korea for the 1989-2014 period. The following hypothesis is evaluated: by increasing high technology manufactured goods’ exports, countries could increase their GDP per capita which also requires increased R&D that translates itself as high technology manufactured exports. The empirical methodology is as follows: both GDP per capita and high-tech exports variables are tested with traditional ADF, PP unit root and KPSS stationarity tests. The series are further evaluated with Zivot-Andrews single break and Lee-Strazicich two break unit root tests. The structural break tests are necessary; it is well-known that structural breaks lead to biased results in the traditional unit root and additionally in the cointegration tests. Lastly, both variables are tested for cointegration with Engle-Granger and Johansen tests by incorporating the break dates as exogenous dummy variables. The estimated models are further checked for parameter instability with CUSUM type tests. The results obtained for Turkey and South Korea are slightly different: i. both variables are cointegrated for both countries; ii. For South Korea, the positive impact of high-tech exports on GDP cannot be rejected in the long and short run; ii. This conclusion cannot be obtained for Turkey, iii. the parameter estimates for Turkey hint a limited positive effect of high tech exports in the short-run only. The results suggest that, in the future, Turkey should increase the investments in human capital and R&D directed to high tech exports to which could accelerate the economic growth.

Full text
Abstract:
Forced by the 1997 Southeast Asian crisis to recognize the external vulnerabilities that openness to volatile capital flows result in and upset over the post-crisis policy responses imposed by the IMF, countries in the sub-region saw the need for a regional financial safety net that can pre-empt or mitigate future crises. At the outset, the aim of the initiative, then led by Japan, was to create a facility or design a mechanism that was independent of the United States and the IMF, since the former was less concerned with vulnerabilities in Asia than it was in Latin America and that the latter’s recommendations proved damaging for countries in the region. But US opposition and inherited geopolitical tensions in the region blocked Japan’s initial proposal to establish an Asian Monetary Fund, a kind of regional IMF. As an alternative, the ASEAN+3 grouping (ASEAN members plus China, Japan and South Korea) opted for more flexible arrangements, at the core of which was a network of multilateral and bilateral central bank swap agreements. While central bank swap agreements have played a role in crisis management, the effort to make them the central instruments of a cooperatively established regional safety net, the Chiang Mai Initiative, failed. During the crises of 2008 and 2020 countries covered by the Initiative chose not to rely on the facility, preferring to turn to multilateral institutions such as the ADB, World Bank and IMF or enter into bilateral agreements within and outside the region for assistance. The fundamental problem was that because of an effort to appease the US and the IMF and the use of the IMF as a foil against the dominance of a regional power like Japan, the regional arrangement was not a real alternative to traditional sources of balance of payments support. In particular, access to significant financial assistance under the arrangement required a country to be supported first by an IMF program and be subject to the IMF’s conditions and surveillance. The failure of the multilateral effort meant that a specifically Asian safety net independent of the US and the IMF had to be one constructed by a regional power involving support for a network of bilateral agreements. Japan was the first regional power to seek to build such a network through it post-1997 Miyazawa Initiative. But its own complex relationship with the US meant that its intervention could not be sustained, more so because of the crisis that engulfed Japan in 1990. But the prospect of regional independence in crisis resolution has revived with the rise of China as a regional and global power. This time both economics and China’s independence from the US seem to improve prospects of successful regional cooperation to address financial vulnerability. A history of tensions between China and its neighbours and the fear of Chinese dominance may yet lead to one more failure. But, as of now, the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s support for a large number of bilateral swap arrangements and its participation in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership seem to suggest that Asian countries may finally come into their own.
