The traditional cante jondo is a song unique to Andalusia as it developed from the "mosaic" of cultures that have inhabited its borders, including Arabs, Jews and Gypsies. The genre expresses the history of the region, reveals the typography of the landscape and cries the tears of its people. The Song of Songs was the most commented upon biblical text in medieval Europe and became the cornerstone of the Western mystical tradition, but our knowledge of its use in Latin Christian communities before the time of Ambrose and Jerome is largely fragmentary. The thesis is a study of the use and interpretation of the Song in the Latin West during the period 250 – 380 CE, with a focus on the Tractatus de Epithalamio of Gregory of Elvira (c. 320-392), which is the earliest extant Song commentary composed in Latin. This study focuses upon three song cycles by Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997), whose importance as a composer and a contributor to the French melodie tradition has gained increasing recognition. The three cycles to be considered, La Solitude, La Nuit, and Le Carnaval come from his maturity and exemplify his mastery as a composer. The study highlights important influences that were present in his musical development and his musical associations. This thesis explores the factors affecting the production of Russian and Soviet song inspired by the lyrics of Pushkin. In so doing, it emphasises three influences which have been alluded to in previous scholarship, but little explored: the songs of Pushkin's time, major Pushkin anniversary celebrations, and the 'public image' of Pushkin, cultivated primarily through the celebrations.
