Full textThis dissertation aims to study the translations and the reception of twentieth-century Chinese literature in Spain. Two main interrelated hypotheses are presented: the marginality of Chinese modern and contemporary literature in the Spanish reception and the mediation of the Anglophone and Francophone literary systems in this reception. These hypotheses are tested through the analysis of the history of translations and a case study scrutinising the reception of Mo Yan’s (莫言) work and the indirect translation from the English into Spanish of his novel Tiantang suantai zhi ge (天堂蒜薹之歌). The marginality of this literature in the Spanish context exhibits numerous symptoms: the profusion of indirect translations, the recourse to editing, the preference for the documentary value of the novels, the emphasis on the radical otherness, etc. Moreover, indirect translation provides the main evidence of the mediation of the Anglophone and Francophone literary systems in this process. One hundred translations are presented, the examination of which enables us to study the evolution of the types of translations, the mediating languages, the channels for choosing the works to be translated, the homogenisation and temporal proximity of translations in English, French and Spanish, the typology of the translated texts, etc. Special attention has been paid to paratexts and reviews in the study of the reception of these texts. Furthermore, the dissertation examines the role played by the mediation of the Anglophone and Francophone literary systems in the incomplete assessment of this literature. The analysis of the reception of Mo Yan’s work and of the translation of one of his most prominent novels offers concrete examples that support this thesis.

Full textOur main aim in this research is to study the translations by Guillermo Macpherson, Luis Astrana and José Mª Valverde of a number of cultural elements that appear in Shakespeare's Henry IV (parts One and Two), Measure for Measure and The Winter's Tale. The objective of this analysis is to establish the extent to which the translations may provide a knowledge of Elizabethan culture on the part of the Spanish readers. The first chapter of this thesis is an overview of Shakespeare's translations in Spain between 1772 and 2004. The second chapter defines the concept of culture and cultural elements. The third chapter sets the main aims of our research and deals with the analysis of the cultural elements selected. The fourth and last chapter focuses on the general conclusions of our project. This thesis includes an English sumrnary and an electronic database containing all of Shakespeare's translations in Spain (1772-2004) Nota Importante: Para poder consultar la base de datos SHESTRA es necesario tener instalado ACCESS y el sistema operativo Windows XP

Full textThis doctoral thesis aims to analyze death in contemporary Mexican narratives with a special focus on the parallel study of Mexican and oriental thoughts; more specifically, the Chinese thoughts. In order to unravel the essence of death presented in the narratives, first, we will make observations on the role of the myths of death and the landscape of indigenous and ancient Chinese communities. By exploring the cultural heritage of the past and monitoring the historical development of the perspective of death in the two cultures, we seek to clarify certain historical behaviors of the people and the nature of customs and public spirit. From this basis, we will study the various connotations of death and its colorful sensory aspects in the literary scene, with particular reference to contemporary writers such as Juan Rulfo, Carlos Fuentes, Fernando del Paso and some Chinese avant-garde writers. Through the parallel study of the Mexican and Chinese novels about their elaboration of the theme of death, we try to describe the similarities and highlight their peculiarities; in this way we will delve into the conformation of their ethnic and national identities, give coherence to the traditional legacy of the country, reflect on how the ideas of death shape its building and draw more or less faithfully the face that can characterize this era and represent the entrance to the future.

Full textThe aim of my dissertation is a group of scientific Arabic manuscripts. The relationship between them is that they contain the Arabic translations of the Zacut’s Almanach Perpetuum. The fifteenth-century astronomer and astrologer Abraham Zacut composed in Hebrew an almanac entitled Ha-Ḥibbur ha-gadol (The Great Compilation) in Salamanca in 1478, using 1473 as date radix. Jose Vizinho made two eminently practical summaries of this work, which he called the Almanach Perpetuum which first appeared in two different printed editions, both at Leiria (Portugal) in 1496, and each version contains canons, in Latin or Spanish respectively that are followed by a set of Latin astronomical tables. Zacut’s work was soon translated into Arabic, and until now several manuscripts of the Arabic translations as well as of various Arabic commentaries on this work could be identified. The first Arabic version from the Zacut’s almanac was made in the East by Mūsā Jālīnūs in 1505-06 and de the second, in the Maghreb by al-Ḥajarī. Mūsā Jālīnūs’s version is preserved in a single manuscript (nº 966 in the Library of El Escorial) containing two sets of canons. The second translation into Arabic is by Aḥmad ben Qasim al-Ḥajarī al-Andalusī (made around 1630) and it is preserved in five manuscripts. His translation reached a wide readership from the 17th until 19th centuries. The main objective of my research has been, based on selected manuscripts, to produce an edition of the Arabic translation of Zacut’s Almanach Perpetuum. This involved a) to produce a critical edition of the canons in the Arabic version of the Almanach; b) to edit the headings of the astronomical tables, in their Latin and Arabic forms, and to subject them to a comparative study; c) to analyze the numerous marginal notes in the Arabic manuscripts, as the provide important evidence for establishing a stemma of the manuscripts. This would then serve as the starting point for d) a detailed linguistic comparison of the manuscripts and an analysis of the differing astronomical parameters and procedures used in the different copies. Finally, based on the above finds, e) diffusion of the Almanach Perpetuum in the Muslim world from the 16th century onwards, where the text had acquired noticeable popularity among astronomers and astrologers alike, could be traced.
This dissertation attempts to emphasise the importance of translation in the history of literature. It focuses on the specific case of the Chinese translator Lin Shu (1852-1924); he is used to illustrate the thesis of this work.
Among translation theories, this dissertation concentrates on those of the Translation Studies, and other related perspectives such as the Polysystems and the Manipulation School, as well as the contributions of the theory of literature and comparative literature. Of equal note is the theory of Reader- response, deconstruction, and Roland Barthes' concept of the Death of the Author.
The thesis is divided into three main independent and, at the same time, interrelated parts. The first part concentrates on the historical context, where we consider the political background, and the use of translation as a way of attaining modernity. More specifically, we analyse the influence of the translation of novels, which were traditionally ignored in Chinese literature. In this context, we stress the success of Lin Shu's translation of La Dame aux Camélias (Alexandre Dumas fils) which opened new horizons for this genre.
The second part of the thesis focuses on the personality of Lin Shu and the characteristics of his translations. Despite his lack of knowledge of foreign languages, Lin Shu produced an important number of works with the help of his narrators. His great literary sensibility earned him critics' praise. Translating forced Lin Shu to break with the traditional language of Chinese literature, wenyan, and to adopt a less rigid style. This fostered the transition from wenyan to baihua, the colloquial language of the people. This language was later to be used by the New Literature, which was very influenced by foreign literature. Lin Shu's translations incorporate foreign literature into Chinese literature, introducing new perspectives in the latter.
The third part leads to the conclusion and raises new considerations. From the three main criteria of this thesis, that is, the personality of Lin Shu, the role of translation in China at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, and the novel as a literary genre, we reach the idea of interrelated systems. The literary system, as many other systems, is placed inside the social system, therefore they both influence each other. Translation is similar to other manipulation processes, since it can be employed to spread specific values.
This thesis has the following objectives: translation can be used to introduce new concepts and strategies to help build national identity, and at the same time play an important role in the socio-political context; translation can stimulate the development of national literatures, and can even change literary trends in the native literature; translation holds an important function in the development and evolution of literature and national languages. Finally, translation can be used as a tool to shape a new literary canon and a new universal literature.

Translating a dialect or marginal languages is always a kind of acrobatic task. Even more so when the original text presents a multicoloured mixture of linguistic codes, each of which is representative of a different geographical and social reality. This is the case of the novels by Pasolini, Gadda and Camilleri, whose personal style voices the complex matter of the Italian language and shows the various functions that a dialect can fulfil within a literary text. The focus of our research is the descriptive study of the Catalan translations of the novels Ragazzi di vita, Il pasticciaccio and Il birraio di Preston. With this study we aim to shed some light on the strategies adopted by the translators and analyse their consequences at a macrotextual level. Moreover, we intend to link such consequences to specific matters related to the Catalan literary system, ranging from the publishing world to the intricate sociolinguistic situation characterizing it.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present dissertation reflects an initial investigation on the ethnological literature about an indigenous collective from the northern Amazon – “East Guyana” – known as “Waiwai” along the Twentieth century. It analyzes ways in which this collective constructs notions of spatiality and relationship as a result of their social interaction with other collectives from the surrounding areas; other kind of people. The research evolves as follows: On a first move, it situates the region where the “Waiwai” live and identifies, in the ethnological literature, the first contribution about populational formations. On a second move, it advanced on the literature review, taking into account the contributions related to the so-called “Waiwaigenesis”. Lastly, it presents an essay on two “Waiwai” “communities” located along the Mapuera River. This is the result of a brief fieldwork carried on between May and August 2010, in the indigenous land “Trombetas-Mapuera”. Based on the essay and drawing from the ethnologic literature reviewed, the research concludes that these populations establish themselves as collectivities in a network that encompass various dimensions of relationship. Moreover, we argue that it is also necessary to take into account personhood production that are in turn connected to material production, on the one hand, and networking with different kind of people and other collectivities, on the other. These dynamics of interconnected formations and relations characterizes substantial aspects of the socialization and the construction of the person on the northern part of the Amazon. The bases this sociality it’s composted from dimensions of the 'indebtedness' from relation’s collective life.
