Full textNigeria lacks schools of translation and, as a result, most of the translation work there is to be done has to be handled by totally untrained people, mainly foreign-language graduates. Given this situation, our study proposes the creation of a translation seminar within nigeria's departments of modern languages so that the students registered in these departments will no longer leave the university without learning at least the most basic and essential things about professional translation. These proposals are contained in the last part of the study which is divided into five sections. The first section describes the linguistic situation which prevails in nigeria while the second part takes a look at the differences that exist between the translation exercices done while learning a foreign language and translation as practised by professionals. The third section is concerned with the teaching of translation. It is in this section that we try to determine the kind of training that is really capable of teaching people how to translate. The fourth section concerns itself with the issue of determining the extent to which students who are still studying languages can be said to qualify for training in the field of translation

Full textThis thesis covers both the sociological context of translation and the training of translators in Nigeria. Translator and interpreters training as a branch of applied translation studies, according to Holmes’ map, is a very important field of research that has been attracting the interest of researchers and teachers in the field from almost everywhere in the world, since the early 1990s. However, very few recent studies are available on this subject in Nigeria. Furthermore, according to many researchers (see Durieux, 2005; Kelly, 2005; Kiraly, 2005 and Fiola, 2003a, for example), the knowledge and consideration of market needs are essential in implementing an effective training program for professional translators and interpreters. In the case of Nigeria, there is a noticeable mismatch between past or existing translator and interpreter training programs and the labour market. Against this background, our thesis, which takes the form of a descriptive research with pragmatic implications (Van der Maren, 2004), aims to analyze the problem in order to propose possible solutions. It also falls within the scope of action research as its ultimate goal is to improve the practice of the twin professions of translation and interpretation, particularly in Nigeria and by extension, in Africa. To this end, this study was conducted using a two-pronged research methodology: an enquiry based on semi-structured interviews and a comparative study of training programs. Thus, we interrogated representatives of twenty-three organizations, which from the onset, were considered as actual or potential users (employers) in the Nigerian translation and interpretation market, with the aim of identifying their needs, and determining how those needs, if any, are being met. In addition, nineteen graduate programs in translation and interpretation were studied in an analytical and comparative manner with a view to identifying their content. They are: two programs offered in France, two in Canada, two in Cameroon, two in Ghana and eleven in Nigeria. On the one hand, the results of our market needs analysis reveal that translation and interpretation needs actually exist in Nigeria, but that these needs are far from being sufficiently met. On the other hand, in the light of the comparative analysis of translation and interpretation training programs that we conducted, it is clear that the existing programs in Nigeria would need to be reviewed, while new ones have to be put in place, taking into consideration current and future market needs. Finally, we proposed strategies towards optimizing professional translator and interpreter training in Nigeria, including a reference framework that can be used for the new programs being recommended.

Full textThis research falls within the scope of the didactics of translation and proposes a method for the teaching of first level technical translation (english-french). The work is divided into two parts : the first sets forth the theoretical foundations of the method, and the second presents learning objectives along with pratical exercises. The proposed teaching method is based upon the use of a typology of technical-scientific texts for didactic purposes. The typology distinguishes three types of texts : popularized, didactic and specialized. Using the interpretative theory of translation, the author emphasizes the pitfalls specific to technical translation and stresses the importance of integrating terminology and documentation into a technical translation course. A series of learning objectives, accompanied by pratical exercises, completes the work. The work includes, moreover, a bibliography of the pedagogy of translation, as well as a glossary of the interpretative theory of translation

Full textMy current research focuses on teaching poetic translation in exolingual university language classes. Translation implies working on poetic texts as vehicle for information. This information necessarily goes beyond the language framework and includes other human sciences. Based on theses hypotheses literary translation is considered as a creative operation which would meet the readability criteria of any type of literature. What we posit calls for two observations: learners accept a pragmatic norm, a specific know-how related to certain representation of norm associated with the identity of the working language. Existing analytical models tend to favour the varying usage condition of learner’s language. With this in mind, theoretical founding principles at the basis of the practice of translation. The objective is to validate the process based on experiences which account for the learner’s ability or inability to feel empowered to dominate their learning experience

Full textIn the first part of this research, we studied the theories, mecanisms and pedagogy of translation in order to understand the phenomenon of translation. Initially, we analyzed the problems found in automatic translation in order to lay the foundations for our reflexion upon the difficulties faced by those who sought to understand and analyze it. We ther introduced work or the issue of translation (by experts) from different approaches (theoretical, linguistic and translation). We completed this presentation with a reflexion upon a central concept in translation, that of equivalence. In this way, we stroue to offer a wide of views on translation. In the second part, we begen to describe the Saudi Arabian translation market. This description alloued us to create and later analyse the results of a survey of a longe number of translators, both saudis and foreignens, working in the country. Naturally this lead us to reflect, in the third part, upon the theoretical advantages in teaching translation, and to recogrise the need for training, as well as the Important part played by skills. This lead us to look at the implications and to the different programs available for training professional translators in Saudi Arabia. In conclusion, we examined the country's need for professional translators, as well as the most appropriate theory for our country. For this, and being abreast of the situation, we presented certain recommendations regarding this training in Saudi Arabia

Full textRoland Pécout was born in 1949 in Châteaurenard (Bouches-du-Rhône), in the Rhône river Provence and has written - both in Occitan and in French - an abundant work, the majority of which is still unpublished or dispersed. Reading these texts reveals a universe made of continuity and passages in which contraries, far from opposing each other, agree and complete themselves. Neither confinement in enrasigament , nor escape into nomadisme in this work but a fecund tension between here and there, the past and future of man, French and Occitan, orality and written culture. This study aims to demonstrate the formal and thematic coherence of this writer's written works beyond the first impression of diversity and crumbling. After a description of the totality of his written texts -including numerous unpublished materials- from the middle of the 1960's to the most recent present time, it more particularly focuses on the four groups of poetry and poetic prose which comprise Avèm decidit d'aver rason (1969), Poèmas per tutejar (1978), Portulan (1978 et 1981) and Mastrabelè (1999)
