Full textThe number of medical translations to Spanish is constantly increasing. However, specialized translators in this field are not enough to meet the needs of the market according to the different surveys carried out in recent years by Spanish researchers. Considering the lack of empirical studies on the teaching-learning of medical translation, as well as that of specialized translation, we looked at ways to bring university courses closer to the current conditions of professional activity. For this reason, the purpose of the present thesis is intended to be a contribution to the didactics of specialized translation, especially French-Spanish medical translation, by creating a teaching-learning method that will allow transfer of professional skills for translators listed by the EMT Expert Group (European Master's in Translation)

Full textThis research is built on a corpus of five medicals books, published between 1532 and 1558. The corpus takes a polemical dimension by opposing two medicals guilds: the doctors and the apothecaries. In 1532, a famous doctor from Lyons, Symphorien Champier, criticizes the apothecaries’ errors concerning the simples in his book, Myrouel des appothicaires. In 1553, a Poitevin doctor, Sébastien Colin, in his Declaration des abuz et trumperies que font les Apothicaires, also denounces the apothecaries’ absence of knowledge and deplores their lack of ethics. Facing the hostility with this second offensive, the apothecary Pierre Braillier wants to defend the honour of his peers. In 1557, he publishes his Declaration des abus et ignorances des Medecins, […] Pour responce contre Lisset Benancio. In his book, he takes the same criticisms as Colin has, but in order to charge the doctors. In 1558, doctor Jean Surrelh wants to restore the doctors’ reputation in his book, Apologie des medecins contre les calomnies, & grand Abus de certains Apothicaires. Pierre Braillier responds to him a few months later in his Articulation […] sur l’apologie de Jean Surrelh. In parallel with the edition of the five texts which constitute the second volume of this research, the first volume is a global study of this medical polemic. We have wanted to examine how the discourse of each of these authors is impacted by his corporate belonging. To that end, we have chosen three focuses: the first is about the anchoring of the authors’ discourse in the scientific and ideological environment, the second is focused in the divergent practices between the two guilds, and the third is about the lexical and linguistic interest of this corporate polemic. The contextualisation reveals how every author positions himself as a professional against the founding principles of the art of medicine. Building on the auctoritates or Bible references or denigrating the sources referred to by the opponent, everyone claims the morality and the greatness of his corporation. At the same time, each author wants to build a positive image of his corporation, discrediting the members of the opposing corporation. During the Renaissance, the apothecary is distinct from the medicine, concerning the activities as well as the legal framework of the exercising of the professionals. Indeed, the competitive practice between doctors and apothecaries continues and tarnishes the relations between these colleagues. In the corpus, the interest of the patient becomes a secondary object of the discourse, because every author wants to blame the opposing guild, in order to defend the legitimacy of her own. The reader is then assigned an important place because he’s presented as a judge in this polemic with a double interest. In addition to relying on the well-deserved social acknowledgement, every author wants to justify his treatments and enjoins the future patients to turn over his corporation. The corporatist affiliation also haunts the scientific and technic lexicon. We have also examined the relationship of every author with the Latin, still considered as the European language of knowledge in the 16th century, and the French, prevailing language in the texts’ corpus. The doctors use a scientific lexicon in Latin, but the apothecary, Pierre Braillier, claims the exclusive use of the French and he confines the Latin to a parodic use

Full textThis research is based on a lingusitic study to design an English-Chinese machine translation system to be applied in two sub-medical domains : echinococcosis and molecular cloning. By means of a detailled contrastive analysis, we focused on analysing the lexical, syntactic and semantic differences and the discrepancies prevalent between these two languages and which are frequently the cause of mistranslation by the machine. We compared the medical protocols translated by human translators with the protocols which were translated using the free MT systems on Internet (Systran, WordlLingo and Babelfish Translation). Some language-specific problems were thus detected and feasible solutions were explored. Therefore this research focused on designing and developing a controlled language (CL) as a supporting technique to reduce the complexity of linguistic analysis and to enhance the translation quality of the machine. While designing the CL, we also take into account the possibility of a future application of this technique in a multilingual environment. Moreover, detailed writing guidelines were designed in the form of a protocol to enable the authors of the medical protocols to compose clerer and relatively simpler sentences which would facilitate the machine to process the input sentences and thus obtain good translations

Full textThe lack of effective translating tools between French and German increases the difficulties of medical translation. To find a solution we present an analysis of French and German medical texts in the field of asthma leading to a notional review of the field and its lexicon as well as to a description of the phraseological units through their thematic use. The notional approach improves the transfer between the languages. The knowledge acquired through such an analysis could be of use to improve or to create tools to help in the translation between these two languages
Ferracci, Elsa. "Edition critique, traduction et commentaire du traité hippocratique des Prénotions de Cos." Thesis, Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040266.
Full textThe Coan Prognoses are one of the treatises of the Hippocratic Corpus. The work is anonymous and can be dated from about the last third of the IVth century b.C. It is presented in the form of a collection of 640 propositions, most often written in a aphoristic style, that are for more than half of them taken from Hippocratic treatises like Aphorisms, Pronostic, Prorrhetic I, Epidemics, Diseases I-II-III, or On head wounds. The content of the compilation is exclusively devoted to the medical prognosis. The treatise had only a very limited tradition in the Antiquity, and was translated neither in Syriac nor in Arabic. Any latin translation is known before the Calvus translation (1525), which represents the starting point of the scholars return to the manuscripts which pass down the text. The introduction presents the work (title, datation, readership, relationships with the others Hippocratic treatises, structure and devices of composition, medical theories, style, history of the treatise, direct and indirect traditions, editions, dialect). The edition itself is mainly based on the more ancient and conservative manuscript, the Parisinus graecus 2253 (A), and also on the indirect tradition (Hippocratic treatises which represent the sources of the work, and Galenic commentaries). The Greek text, presented with the Testimonia, is accompanied by a French translation, by a philological, historical and medical commentary, and by appendix

Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2020. http://accesdistant.sorbonne-universite.fr/login?url=http://theses.paris-sorbonne.fr/2020SORUL059.pdf.
Full textBernard de Gordon is a doctor from Montpellier, from late 13th into early 14th centuries. His work, the Lilium medicinae, written in Latin, has quickly been subject to many translations in Europe before to be printed in 1480. We are proposing to investigate, via the french editing of handwritten translations, this medieval medicine masterpiece’s transfer and spread. Three fragments are nowadays conserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, known as “Français 1288, 1327 and 19989”. The whole corpus, dated from the 15th century, offers special care for language and discourse that meet the requirements of the movement of knowledge and the specific readership. The dissemination and popularization of this work shows the knowledge’s appropriation through translation in order to special uses. A joint edition provides a clear reading of particularities and similarities of each translation and comes close to the context of receiving and dissemination of the french translation of Lilium medicinae

Full textThis study focuses on Wolof medical terminology under the lexical semantics context. We talk about terminology units, particularly collocations. This choice has a direct link with our theoretical framework of analysis, the Meaning-Text Theory (MTT), which currently offers one of the best tools for describing collocation through Lexical Functions. Collocations constitute indices of specialization and have a singular lexico-syntactic functioning. We analyze them, on the basis of compiled scientific corpus, in order to have a holistic perception of lexical co-occurrence. Languages in Africa are often poorly endowed from a terminology view. This research is based on the lexical analysis model which takes into account three key parameters : meaning, form and combinatorics, to make a description of the Wolof lexicon which, in the long run, gives principles of terminology. The translational scope of the work lies in the interlinguistic approach we adopt to develop our list of terms. The operative side of the study is the constitution of a beginning of trilingual medical corpus (English-French-Wolof). The multilingual character is not an end in itself, but considering the richness of English and French terminology studies, it seemed appropriate to start work in these languages. The translation perspective of the terminology has revealed different processes to create and restitute medical terms (English and French) into Wolof. Moreover, it focuses on a socioterminological problem for which we give some answers

Full textBRAFV600- inhibitors, including vemurafenib, are efficient against tumors harboring this MAPK pathway activating mutation, which is the case of ~50% of melanomas. But most of the patients under treatment progress within a year, and develop paradoxical secondary tumors. Most resistance mechanisms to drugs that target the BRAF and/or MEK kinases in cancer rely on reactivation of the RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK signal transduction pathway (ERK-dependent), on activation of the alternative PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway (ERK-independent) or on modulation of the caspase-dependent apoptotic cascade. All three pathways converge to regulate the formation of the eIF4F translation initiation complex that binds to the 7-methyl-guanine cap at the 5’ end of mRNAs, thereby modulating mRNA translation of specific mRNAs. We show here that persistent formation of the eIF4F complex, comprising the eIF4E cap binding protein, the eIF4G scaffolding protein and the eIF4A RNA helicase, is associated with resistance to anti-BRAF, anti-MEK and to anti-BRAF + anti-MEK combinations in BRAFV600- mutant melanoma, colon and thyroid cell lines. Unresponsiveness to treatment and maintenance of eIF4F complex formation is associated with either reactivation of MAPK signaling or absence of ERK-independent decreased phosphorylation of the inhibitory eiF4E binding protein 4EBP1 or increased pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 modifying factor (BMF)-dependent degradation of eIF4G. Development of an in situ method shows by proximity ligation assay (PLA) that the formation of the eIF4F complex is decreased in tumors responding to anti-BRAF therapy and increased in resistant metastases. Strikingly, inhibiting the eIF4F complex, either by blocking the eIF4E-eIF4G interaction or by targeting eIF4A with small compounds is synergistic with BRAFV600- inhibition. The other main problem arising during anti-BRAF treatment is the frequent induction of secondary cutaneous and extra-cutaneous tumors, through the formation of BRAF-CRAF dimers that we visualized in vivo for the first time. In conclusion, we have identified by PLA a novel biomarker of resistance against BRAF inhibitors, which is also a promising therapeutic target. Combinations of drugs targeting BRAF (and/or MEK) and eIF4F may overcome most of the resistance mechanisms arising in BRAFV600- cancers. In parallel, we established a BRAF-CRAF PLA method in paradoxical secondary tumors induced by BRAF inhibitors, leading to the identification of several subpopulations more at risk of developing this type of tumors

Full textIn 1204, the King of Aragon became Lord of Montpellier. In 1309, the Curia apostolic was installed in Avignon. Under these two patronages, the University of medicine experienced, from the second half of the thirteen century to the end of the fourteenth century, its most flourishing period. It was the period of the greatest literary activity of its graduates. After they had digested the Arabic works translated at Montecassino and Toledo, the Montpellier masters were looking for new texts in order to teach as well as to practise, especially within the two courts. Now the recent integration of the territories of Levante into the Crown of Aragon gave access to new texts from al-Andalus. So, on the impulse of the Montpellier masters, translations flourished in a second « Spanish » place. The study of the quotations made by the medical authors of Montpellier show that seven Andalusian works, translated into latin between the thirteen century and the fourteenth century, are quoted in about twenty works from Montpellier. Some among them, dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, prove that the translated texts remained at the disposal of the Montpellier students for decades. These translations make up only a small proportion of the quotations of Andalusian authors found in the Montpellier texts. But they associate some new Andalusian authors with the activity of the Montpellier studium. The resort to these authors attest the dynamism of the medical university in the Middle Ages which led its masters to the terra incognita of new Andalusian works
