Full textThis research concerns the field of the audiovisual translation and the English movie language. In particular, the aim of the study will focus on the role of vocatives in a corpus of three films in three different languages. The chosen movies are produced in the '90s and are set in Victorian age: Jane Eyre, Swept from the Sea, The Piano. The empirical process will manly consider two categories of vocatives: proper names and address terms. The study approach will be based on the Corpus Linguistics methodology, in order to get a qualitative and a quantitative analysis of the vocatives. Indeed, there will be an investigation on the number and the type of occurrences involving the most frequent vocatives, both in the source language (English), and in the two target languages (Italian and German). Another important task of the research is the observation of translation universals (Baker, 1993), and the linguistic context in which the phenomenon occurs. The innovative feature of this work is a twofold analysis, which involves a three-way comparison. The results will show a higher frequency of vocatives in the dubbed languages and also different classifications of occurrences. Eventually, there will be some consideration regarding the translation strategies adopted for Italian and German, depending on their linguistic and cultural context.

Full textThe research investigates the extent to which Gianni Rodari’s (1920-1980) works changed in their English translations through the mediating presence of publishers, reviewers, and especially translators between the 1960s and 2011. With reference to the cultural context of production of translated works (Bassnett & Lefevere, 1998; Chesterman et al., 2000), translational patterns of children’s literature were firstly studied from a retrospective point of view (Toury, 2012) to contextualise Rodari’s books in English in the UK and the US. Secondly, the intervention of translators in four of these books was analysed within the mediation framework provided by S-Universals in translation (Chesterman, 2004). The discrete analysis of the translations by Patrick Creagh (1965, 1971), Jack Zipes and Antony Shugaar (2008, 2011 respectively), based on the nine translational trajections identified by J. L. Malone (1988), showed that the translators adopted different foreignising and domesticating strategies (Venuti, 1995) according to the intended public. More specifically, domesticating strategies presented a high degree of creativity in line with Rodari’s original narrative purpose, whereas Shugaar’s foreignising translation (2011) retained references to the Italian culture as in Rodari’s source text, marking a shift of audience from children to adults, from the Italian to the English target text.

Full textWhen speaking of translation, we often think of it as the end result of a process and we analyze and evaluate it as such. However we seem to forget that, before that final result is arrived at, the translator applies, more or less deliberately, all those tools of analysis, criticism, correction, re-reading, re-formulation and alteration that revision consists of. This first stage – which each translator goes through when working on his/her own translation (self-revision) – is usually followed by a second stage where the translation is revised by another professional figure in the publishing field (usually, and desirably, also a translator) and then by further stages of translation processing and publishing. As well as being a crucial stage of any translation work and publishing process, revision plays a fundamental didactic role in translator training. The idea behind this project arises from the need to triangulate insights and data on revision drawing from scholarly research, professional practice and training experience, and this three-pronged approach informs the whole project. In particular, the project aims at achieving the following four main objectives: • to formulate a new, straightforward and exhaustive definition of the term “revision” to be used in research and training contexts as well as in the professional world; • to provide a thematic, critical, and state-of-the-art overview of scholarly and non-scholarly research on revision; • to conduct a survey (by means of on-line, retrospective questionnaires) on all aspects of professional revision practice in Italy, aimed at collecting data from both translators and revisers, and therefore outlining specific and critical aspects of this stage of the publishing process; • to provide hints and suggestions on methods and tools to be applied to the teaching of revision both in didactic and training contexts.

Full textThis thesis reflects the shared current interest in the ongoing educational debate on the role and use of English as a medium of instruction in academic settings. English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) programs are the main focus of this study which includes a quantitative and a qualitative part. Through an up-to-date analysis of the data on EMI courses in Italy collected by Costa and Coleman in 2012, the first part shows the results of a questionnaire that was sent to all Italian universities; the qualitative part describes the use of metadiscourse markers by four Italian lecturers at the Università Cattolica of Milan. The simplified and restricted classification model of metadiscourse markers proposed by Nobles (2010), adapted from Ädel (2003), was here applied to the academic spoken discourse. The increase in the number of EMI courses in Italy registered by Costa and Coleman in 2012 has remained stable. The comparison of the use of personal and impersonal metadiscourse shows that personal metadiscourse tokens surpass the impersonal counterpart, with the pronoun “we” as the most frequent self-mention marker in the corpus. Finally, the present study can be of great interest both for lecturers and university policymakers or teacher-training designers.

Full textThe dissertation deals with the correspondence between the writer, literary critic and American political activist Mary McCarthy and the Italian essayist and theater critic Nicola Chiaromonte: an epistolary exchange, their, still unpublished despite the growing number of publications concerning the two authors. The correspondence maintained with close friends is to be considered a fundamental element to shed light on the most intimate aspects of Mary McCarthy's life and artistic creation: in particular, this correspondence reveals the author's more human and personal side (rarely shown in public) and the devotion and respect he felt towards the one he considered as her mentor, critic and friend. The same feelings are reflected in the words of Nicola Chiaromonte, so austere and measured in his work as playful and passionate with his closest friends. The thesis consists of two main parts. The brief general introduction is followed by a first part of historical-narrative nature, in which the biographies of Mary McCarthy and Nicola Chiaromonte alternate up to the fundamental moment of their meeting, starting from which their experiences are intertwined in the events who saw them involved. The second part of the thesis is instead the actual correspondence: 115 among letters, telegrams and tickets, supplied with critical notes in order to allow a better understanding.
