Abstract:
The aim of this study was to outline the importance of Junior Traffic Training Centres in both primary and secondary schools. This would aid the effective integration of Traffic Safety Education in the school curriculum within outcomes-based education. The primary objective of this research was to determine the ways in which Junior Traffic Training Centres at schools are instrumental in the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes of learners towards safe participation in traffic environment. This research was conducted by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation through a questionnaire and observations. Investigation focused on learners from three schools, namely Maheelo Primary School (a farm school at Hartbeesfontein), Gaenthone Secondary School (a semi-rural school in Tigane Township near Hartbeesfontein) and Phaladi Combined School situated in Ikageng Township. It was found that more emphasis should be placed on pedestrian education. Learners should be taught traffic safety from pre-school, with the help of Junior Traffic Training Centres. Ten recommendations are made in Section 7.5. These include more training in Traffic Safety Education and that focus must be placed on disadvantaged areas; that government should avail trained teachers in Traffic Safety Education; and that schools must have access to Junior Traffic Training Centres. This study is of significance to the North West Province and the South African society because each day we lose learners through road accidents. This does not only cost the government money but is also painful to all of us. This study maintains that teaching our learners road safety education could contribute towards overcoming this situation.

Abstract:
The main aim of the study was to determine values and attitudes of primary school learners towards traffic safety and traffic safety education. The role played by parents and teachers in developing positive values and attitudes towards traffic safety and traffic safety education was determined. It was important to find out what can be done by parents and school to teach traffic safety education to learners. Key concepts like values, attitudes, traffic, safety and. education are discussed in details in this study. A group of learners was selected from fifteen primary schools in Potchefstroom to conduct this study. The main aim was to determine their values and attitudes towards traffic safety and traffic safety education. A questionnaire was developed whereby learners, their parents and their teachers had to fill it out in order to reach the objectives of this study. From. the response of learners, it was evident that learners really value their safety and that it is important for them to be safe road users. They even showed interest in including road safety education in their school curriculum. The school and parents also showed interest in traffic safety education being included in their children's school curriculum. They even opted to help teaching their children. The response of the learners, teachers and parents was positive and this indicated how possible it can be to implement/teach traffic safety education in schools. The. study was successful and it is hoped that the teachers can use it to their own benefit and to the benefit of their learners.

Abstract:
Traffic safety, viewed as a radical community problem, has been the starting-point in this work, with children’s vulnerable position in focus. This work is divided into two parts. Part I is an examination paper on C-level, consisting of a survey within this field. Part II consists of this examination paper on D-level, an empirical study about pre-school children’s understanding of traffic. The aim of the present work has been to study five-year-old pre-school children’s understanding of traffic, as viewed from the perspective of three different groups, the children, the pre-school teachers and the parents. The questions at issue were: the children’s conceptions of traffic and how those conceptions have been acquired, the children’s conduct in traffic, and how pre-school teachers and parents work with children’s traffic training. To answer those questions a case study was accomplished at a pre-school, where eight children, two pre-school teachers and three parents were interviewed. Moreover, I made a field study of the children during their walks in traffic and analyzed their traffic drawings. The results show that the pre-school children had acquired knowledge as well as misunderstandings about traffic. The children understood traffic as consisting of motor vehicles and roads but did not comprehend themselves as a traffic element. They knew that traffic has an inherent system of rules but did not to the same extent understand the origin or cause of those rules. The children were deeply interested in traffic lights but all children did not grasp the meaning of the yellow light. The children in my study understood that road signs have a symbolic message and road signs with abstract symbols were the most difficult to interpret correctly. Difficulties in distinguishing between right and left also appeared in the study. In regards to the use of bicycle helmets the children believed the sole purpose of the helmet was to protect them during unsteady cycling. The children had acquired their knowledge and conceptions from many different sources, mainly from the home and the pre-school. The observed traffic walks of the children passed smoothly, where the use of reflex vests and the groupings during the walks appeared to be ingrained and useful routines. The education of the pre-school and the home was carried through as practical training in the real traffic environment, preferably through walks, bus rides and cycling. In pre-school, the adult was a greater authority in the traffic situation than normally the case. Sometimes the pre-school worked with invisible delimitations as an educational tool with the purpose of protecting the children when in the traffic setting.

Abstract:

One of the service classes offered by Diffserv is the Assured Forwarding (AF) class. Because of scalability concerns, IETF specifications recommend that microflow and aggregate-unaware active buffer management mechanisms such as RIO (Random early detecLion with ln/Out-ofprofile) be used in the core of Diffserv networks implementing AF. Such mechanisms have, however, been shown to provide poor performance with regard to fairness, stability and network controL Furthermore, recent advances in router technology now allow routers to implement more advanced scheduling and buffer management mechanisms on high-speed ports. This thesis evaluates the performance improvements that may be realized when implementing the Diffserv AF core using a hierarchical microflow and aggregate aware buffer management mechanism instead of RIO. The author motivates, proposes and specifies such a mechanism. The mechanism. referred to as H-MAQ or Hierarchical multi drop-precedence queue state Microflow-Aware Quelling, is evaluated on a testbed that compares the performance of a RIO network core with an H-MAQ network core.

Abstract:
Two studies are reported which investigated the effect of individual demographics on training performance in air traffic controllers. The first study investigated the relationship between the demographics of age, sex and education level, and pass/fail rates at an air traffic control training centre. The data for this study was an historic data set provided by Airways Corporation, which oversees air traffic management in New Zealand. This includes training all controllers and providing all air traffic control in the country. The primary result of the first study was that trainees with post-secondary education achieved better during training than trainees with a high school education. Additionally, the level of education attained by the trainee appeared to be the best predictor (of the three demographic characteristics) for a trainee’s success. The data was limited, due to a significant amount of incomplete trainee records. This impaired the ability to conclusively resolve the role of these demographic characteristics for trainee success. The second study, investigated the impact these same demographics may have on trainee success in a much smaller (N=16), but complete (i.e., no missing records) and current cohort. In addition, the feedback given and received in a training centre to the 16 trainees was examined. The trainees under consideration in this study were attending the Airways training centre. The trainees’ debriefs after their air traffic control training sessions in Airways’ immersive tower simulator were recorded. The trends in the data validate the need for further research. The primary result of the second study however, was that there was a significant difference in the pass rates of those trainees with only a high school education (66.7% failed) and those with post-secondary education (0% failed). The other two demographic characteristics of interest, age and sex, did not significantly differ for those trainees who passed and failed. The combined results of these studies indicate that the air-traffic control community in New Zealand may benefit from further investigating these differences and potentially raising education requirements for air traffic control trainees.

Abstract:
A high incidence of road accidents has been recorded in Saudi Arabia in recent years (Traffic Department Statistics 1991). Various factors might have accounted for this high rate of road accidents; the aim of this research, therefore, was to examine what factors contribute to road accidents in the country. In pursuit of this aim, a review of relevant literature on factors related with road accidents in many countries of the world was undertaken. Through this review, a list of road, vehicle and driver-related variables was selected for investigation in this study. The target population for the study was 4,100 drivers in Eastern Saudi Arabia who had been involved in road accidents in the period. Out of this population, a sample of 600 drivers was selected. The instrument used to collect data for the study was a questionnaire which requested demographic information on factors which had caused them to have an accident, and questions analysing habitual driving behaviour. Drivers were also tested on their knowledge of road signs. Returns were received from 484 drivers, 81% of the study sample. Two statistical techniques, chi square and correlation coefficient Spearman Brown formula, were utilised to test the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable - the number of road accidents. The findings of the study show that certain variables were significantly associated with road accidents in Saudi Arabia. Among the significant variables were the age of the driver, education level, profession, violation record, vehicle ownership, joy-riding, poor eye sight, sun haze, sand storm, long hours driving, non-observance of speed limit, emerging and exiting from roads without signals, presence of stray animals, non-marking of the road, non-familiarity with the road, lack of regular checking of vehicles, lack of regular servicing of vehicles and driving under medication. The variables that were not significant include marital status, non-possession of a licence, mechanical fault, reversing, non-alertness to others' errors, use of high beam lights while driving, non-lighting of the roads, passengers' behaviour, ear disorder. Conclusions were drawn as to deficiencies in driver training in Saudi Arabia and inadequacies of supervision by the law enforcement agents. It is recommended that policy makers should make intensive efforts in organising training programmes and seminars for drivers and curriculum of driving schools should be expanded. Measures for improving enforcement of traffic regulations are made, and it is suggested that an Islamic insurance policy for vehicles should be introduced in the country. Finally, suggestions are made for further research.

Abstract:
The title of the study is integrating road traffic safety education in the teaching and learning of science and technology. The overall goal of this study was to develop a tool for the integration of Traffic Safety Education (TSE) in the teaching and learning of Science and Technology in School. As such, four research questions (stated in 1.2.1 to 1.2.5) were raised on critical aspects of the problem so as to direct the course of the study to provide solutions to the problem. These research questions were formulated into the aims of the study as stated in section 1.3. To attain these aims, a literature study and interviews were conducted. Through interviews and a literature study, it was found (among other things) that: • TSE has great potential for the reduction of road accidents/ collisions, and its teaching in school will prepare our learners to be safe road users. • Science and Technology has tremendous impact on traffic safety, and the three have much in common, which does provide room for them to be integrated in school curricula. • School educators are not adequately equipped to integrate TSE in the different learning areas. Consequently, an integration model called "Multilateral learning area integration model" has been developed for the integration of TSE in the learning areas of natural science and technology (see 7.2 and 7.3for details). Eleven recommendations were made in section 8.4 on the basis of the conclusions (in section 8.3) drawn from the proceedings of interviews and the literature study. These recommendations if implemented accurately, would undoubtedly contribute to solving the problem investigated in the study. This study has therefore made a valuable contribution to laying a solid foundation for Combating the problem of high road accidents/collisions on South African roads.

Abstract:
The UbuntuNet Alliance, a consortium of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) runs an exclusive data network for education and research in east and southern Africa. Despite a high degree of route redundancy in the Alliance's topology, a large portion of Internet traffic between the NRENs is circuitously routed through Europe. This thesis proposes a performance-based strategy for dynamic ranking of inter-NREN paths to reduce latencies. The thesis makes two contributions: firstly, mapping Africa's inter-NREN topology and quantifying the extent and impact of circuitous routing; and, secondly, a dynamic traffic engineering scheme based on Software Defined Networking (SDN), Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) and Reinforcement Learning. To quantify the extent and impact of circuitous routing among Africa's NRENs, active topology discovery was conducted. Traceroute results showed that up to 75% of traffic from African sources to African NRENs went through inter-continental routes and experienced much higher latencies than that of traffic routed within Africa. An efficient mechanism for topology discovery was implemented by incorporating prior knowledge of overlapping paths to minimize redundancy during measurements. Evaluation of the network probing mechanism showed a 47% reduction in packets required to complete measurements. An interactive geospatial topology visualization tool was designed to evaluate how NREN stakeholders could identify routes between NRENs. Usability evaluation showed that users were able to identify routes with an accuracy level of 68%. NRENs are faced with at least three problems to optimize traffic engineering, namely: how to discover alternate end-to-end paths; how to measure and monitor performance of different paths; and how to reconfigure alternate end-to-end paths. This work designed and evaluated a traffic engineering mechanism for dynamic discovery and configuration of alternate inter-NREN paths using SDN, LISP and Reinforcement Learning. A LISP/SDN based traffic engineering mechanism was designed to enable NRENs to dynamically rank alternate gateways. Emulation-based evaluation of the mechanism showed that dynamic path ranking was able to achieve 20% lower latencies compared to the default static path selection. SDN and Reinforcement Learning were used to enable dynamic packet forwarding in a multipath environment, through hop-by-hop ranking of alternate links based on latency and available bandwidth. The solution achieved minimum latencies with significant increases in aggregate throughput compared to static single path packet forwarding. Overall, this thesis provides evidence that integration of LISP, SDN and Reinforcement Learning, as well as ranking and dynamic configuration of paths could help Africa's NRENs to minimise latencies and to achieve better throughputs.

Abstract:
The title of this study is "Guidelines for a Traffic Safety Education Curriculum for training of Grade R school facilitators". The purpose of the study was to suggest guidelines to compile a curriculum for the training of facilitators to teach the Grade R learners Traffic Safety Education (TSE). The study was carried out in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The target groups were facilitators of pre-primary schools and lecturers from Universities, Technikons and Colleges of Education that were involved with the training of educators/facilitators. The questions that emanated from the analysis of the problem were posed in 1.2.1 to 1.2.4. Also, the aims of the study were stated in 1.3.1 to 1.3.4. The principal method of gathering information for the study was by means of questionnaires as discussed in 1.4.2, 5.3 and 5.4 respectively. The data collected was analysed and discussed in sections 5.5 and 5.6 respectively. It was found that both facilitators and lecturers stressed the need for teaching TSE in pre-schools and schools. They also acknowledged that this vital aspect of education is lacking in South African schools. As such, it is a good move to aspire for the inclusion of TSE in the training of facilitators/educators. It was therefore suggested that facilitators/educators should be trained (through in-service training and teacher training programmes in colleges etc) to teach TSE to learners. Further studies need to be done to check the extent to which the suggested guidelines are useful to facilitators' tasks.

Abstract:
In 2014, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) highlighted to the U.S. Senate the need to focus on air traffic control (ATC) training to meet job qualification and attrition rates within the career field. One U.S. Department of Defense military service assists the FAA in providing worldwide ATC services. This service is referred to as the agency throughout this paper to ensure confidentiality. The agency's ATC career field manager echoed the FAA's call for action in his 2014 Strategic/Action Plan. In August 2013, the agency's ATC trainer program was published. As of December 2015, the program had not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if the program facilitated the learning of critical ATC on-the-job training skills. An ad hoc expertise-oriented evaluation was conducted using the lenses of andragogy, experiential learning, and instructional system design (ISD). Purposeful sampling procedures were used to select 20 participants across the subgroups of supervisors, trainers, managers, and training developers from 7 focus sites. The semi-structured interviews queried 4 topical areas derived from Kirkpatrick's 4 levels of evaluation model. Data collected via documents and interviews were analyzed using descriptive, emotion, eclectic, and pattern coding. Key findings indicated that the program was not developed compliant with ISD principles and did not promote adult learning as endorsed by andragogy and experiential learning theory. The implications for positive social change include providing stakeholders with data needed to make evidence-based decisions regarding the current and future state of the program. The evaluation report project can be shared with the FAA, an agency partner, and has the potential to create a platform for improved training practices focusing on optimum and successful adult learning transactions.

Grant, Timothy A. "Prehospital Staffing and Road Traffic Accidents: Physician Versus Trained Nonphysician Responders." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/237.

Full text
Abstract:
Road traffic deaths, which affect people in their productive years, are projected to be the third leading cause of death by the year 2030. While most studies have focused on road infrastructure and vehicle safety, this study examined something new: the impact of prehospital response to road traffic accidents on the rate of death. Some countries send physicians to the scene of an accident; some send paramedics or registered nurses. The question this research sought to answer was whether the use of physician responders resulted in a lower rate of death compared to the use of nonphysician responders. The literature makes it clear that rate of road traffic death is related to country income and governance indicators, so first those variables needed to be equalized. My conceptual framework for this cross-sectional correlation study was the Haddon matrix, which organizes injuries by temporal (pre-event, event, and postevent) and epidemiological (host, agent, and environment) factors. Using World Health Organization data on road traffic injury and country income, World Bank data on governance indicators, and a literature search of 67 countries' prehospital response profiles, significant negative correlations (p > 0.001) were found for road traffic deaths and income, r (65) = -0.68, and governance indicators, r (65) = -0.646. No significant difference in the rate of road traffic death was found between physician and nonphysician prehospital staffing. Because increasing countries' income and improving governance are long-term, ambitious goals for developing countries, training nonphysician prehospital responders appears to be the most effective social change to decrease the burden of road traffic deaths.

Abstract:
National and international studies and statistics show that road trauma is the leading cause of injury and death of children to age 14 years. One contributing element of this trauma among children relates to pedestrian accidents. Reducing child pedestrian trauma is a complex problem requiring a multi-faceted approach. One approach is through education. This evaluative study explored the links between the implementation of RoadSmart, a new primary school road safety education program developed by VicRoads, and the road crossing behaviour of children in year 2.A process-outcome approach was employed which focused on both the implementation and outcome components of the year 2 "Walking safely" component of the RoadSmart program. RoadSmart offers children first-hand experiences of real-traffic situations and comprises two major parts - school based learning sequences and take-home activities, designed to involve parents/carers in educating their children about road safety. Pre and post unobtrusive observations were undertaken of participating children crossing the road at an unmarked mid-block location and were matched for 44 children. The program was also systematically observed in the classrooms of these students. The findings imply that if teachers implement RoadSmart in the intended manner, students cross roads more safely. Overall findings from this evaluation concur with those of other researchers(Demetre et al., 1993; Rivara, 1990; Roberts, 1980; Thomson et al., 1996), that children under 9 possess capabilities that can be fostered through education and real-street experience to enable them to function more effectively in the traffic environment.

This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of seniors in transportation and examines the typical causes of traffic accidents caused by the participation of persons of this age category. The theoretical part of the thesis explains the demographic development of the society with regard to the population’s mobility and describes the personality of the person in the transport environment from the traffic psychology point of view focusing on seniors. The empirical part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of traffic accidents with the participation of seniors, defining the causes. It sets out the practical tools that can be used to objectively assess the driver's ability to drive in terms of driver's age and the possibility of reducing the number of traffic accidents caused by the elderly.

Abstract:

In this study I have investigated how role playing may change young students´ attitudes and behavior. According to the Swedish National Agency for Education´s governing document, Läroplanen för de frivilliga skolformerna, 1994, the principals at Swedish schools are required to inform students about the risks connected with alcohol and traffic. Scientists bring to our attention the need for emotional information to change attitudes and behaviors. The Historical Wine- and Sprits Museum in Stockholm has arranged a role play that gives emotional information to school students in order to affect their attitudes towards drunk driving. My study is a qualitative examination of this role play. One of my conclusions is that the strongest effect of the Historical Wine- and Spirit Museum’s role play lies on the cognitive and affective part of young students´ attitudes towards driving under the influence of alcohol. However, the role play is not using the other powerful effect a role play can have, which is learning to behave differently by actually acting. This leaves room for improvements. The study furthermore looks into different theories about role playing and how to build a role play to make an effective change in attitudes and behaviors. This is also investigated in the empirical part of the study in the form of interviews. For instance, arguments should always be thought out by the participants themselves and the time for preparing arguments has an effect on the effectiveness of the role play.

Abstract:
Air pollution is a phenomenon mainly derived from human activity in several sectors, aggravated by economy and population growth, by the large technological innovations and the rapid industrialization, which made it a growing concern, for its effects are clearly perceptible and felt by the entire society, whether they are children, adults or elderly. One of the major environmental problems is currently air pollution. Automotive vehicles are the main source of atmospheric pollution and noise in the city of São Paulo as well as in the other metropolitan regions of the country. One alternative to possibly minimize this problem is the implementation of a Sympathetic Car Ride Program. The objective of this study was therefore: a) to identify the reasons for people participating or not in a Sympathetic Car Ride Program in São Paulo City-SP; b) to verify their knowledge, opinions and perceptions about the relationship between health and environment; and particularly about the use of the automobile and environmental pollution and c) to verify in to what extent these perceptions would influence their decision to take part in a Program of this nature. The quail-quantitative research methodology was used: a hospital clerk oriented questionnaire was applied to the workers of a health institution and so were interviews with health and environment professionals. Conclusion: all the participants surveyed demonstrated to have preoccupation with the quality of the environment when thinking on future generations. Nonetheless, on practical issues such as sharing the automobile to participate in the Sympathetic Car Ride, a certain lack of interest was verified. The group showed not to be prepared to share the automobile mainly for socio-cultural reasons. To give and to get a ride from known people is also a factor that influences the adhesion to the Program in order that the interviewees feel safe when participating. In the interviewees´ opinion the implementation of the Sympathetic Ride will be more effective if it is carried out in companies, schools, universities or other institutions where people already got to know one another. A considerable part of the interviewed population still places high value on owning a car. The difficulty in establishing a relationship between health and environment also interferes in the adhesion of the professionals even though they consider it to be an interesting initiative. Education is still believed to be the best way in order that attitude change occurs

Abstract:
Three points are consensual by professionals with the theme of traffic in Brazil. First, traffic education is absolutely essential in order to reduce the great number of traffic accidents in the country and transform public roadways into socially friendly spaces. Second, traffic education has not been treated with the importance it should have been treated. Third, it is necessary to perfect the programmatic content related to traffic education in elementary teaching. This paper defends the transversality as a pedagogic process for traffic education in elementary teaching and proposes a complementary adjustment to programmatic content to be adapted by the various disciplines in all periods of elementary teaching, with the incorporation of elements of engineering following the vision of the students detected in the \"Off to School\" (Rumo à Escola) project. The general working methodology is based on theoretical research and in field research activith. The thesis is based, above all, on information gathered in field research done in the \"Off to School\" project, developed by the DENATRAN (National Department of Transit) in partnership with UNESCO, on the work of Prof. Reinier Rozestraten, and on the guide lines of brazilian educational and transit legislation.

The traffic education may be an important tool to build values in public transit and also as an important tool for the dissemination of knowledge and practices for education. This study presents the non-formal education programs developed by the Companhia de Engenharia de Tráfego São Paulo and how these actions can contribute to a more harmonious coexistence in the urban Sao Paulo, including with respect to issues related to the environment. The programs were cited in Agenda 21 the city of Sao Paulo as vehicles for environmental education. In particular, it was described and analyzed the program "Doing School: educating for new values in traffic" which aims at training teachers to develop the transit issue and its different approaches, including citizenship and environment in schools. The analyzed segment refers to the elementary school II teachers and education to youth and adults teachers. We interviewed 86 teachers who participated in the training from April 2007 to February 2010. To tabulate the data collected was used Qualiquantsoft software, which allows obtaining the Collective Subject Discourse. With this research, it was possible to identify strengths in the program, such as carrying out projects at schools, which promote an interdisciplinary approach, including integrating the content of the environment and citizenship, the concern of the faculty in building projects that consider the specificity site. Among the points identified for improvement actions are the low compliance of the call for faculty participation in training and lack of instruments for monitoring the implementation or not projects in schools. However, the program is very well rated by teachers participating in training. Teachers say they are satisfied with the content, methodology, among other attributes evaluated in the research, which proves to be worth the investment in improvement actions for this type of program

This study describes and analyses the programs of the courses taught at a distance for training the teachers, mediated by computers and internet, developed by the Companhia de Engenharia de Tráfego de São Paulo - CET, as a subsidy for the construction of knowledge and the realization of educative actions focused on the traffic theme and with a purpose of non-formal education in the tuition of basic education teachers in the city of São Paulo. Since the mid of the 1970's, CET develops attendance programs on the non-formal education, with the goal of spread the knowledge and teach the practices that involves the sharing of the public space of the São Paulo city in a citizen and safe way for everybody. Since 2009, attentive to the social and educational context that shows an increasingly use of the Information and Communication Technologies (TIC), the company starts studying the utilization of these tools in its educational programs, resulting, in 2010, in the implementation of the first course at a distance, whose target audience was the teachers of the second cycle of fundamental education and the education for adults. Since these first experience, which was successful, seven other courses were developed until the mid of 2012, being five of these courses focused on the tuition of teachers. The specific goals for this research contemplates the investigation about the perception of the teachers about the contribution of the content of the courses taught by CET in the modality of teaching at a distance for their professional development and for the development of their own projects related to the traffic in their disciplines, identifying the needs and expectations provided by them; the analysis and identification of dialogues, in the interface between the students and the tutors of the courses at a distance of CET, which shown an involvement and a participation of the student in the theme traffic , citizenship, environment and art/education and in which form they express the possibility or the use of these themes in their practices; the identification about the approach of the themes citizenship, environment and art/education in the projects developed by the teachers that participate of the courses at a distance of CET; the thinking about the use of education at a distance in subjects related to the education of teachers. The methodological procedures involve the application of a questionnaire for the teachers, interviewing via telephone and analyzing the discussion forums. The period was since July of 2010 until December of 2012. The research pointed out that the results were satisfying in what relates to the perception of the teachers about the structure of the courses and the importance of the offered content, indicating the use of the discussed themes in the conception of projects in the school units. The analyze of the dialogues between students and tutors provides results that indicates the need of improvements, in the sense of a better utilization of the discussion forums space and for the construction of a knowledge related to education for the traffic, citizenship, environment and art/education.

Abstract:

The societies, generally, have in education one of its pillars. The school is a privileged space for learning and socialization, either on his ability to articulate theory and practice, as well on the multiplicity of experiences it provides. New educational paradigms have brought to discussion important questions about the role of education and more efficient ways to conduct the process of teaching and learning. Education structured in a set of clearly differentiated disciplines and focused on mechanical learning are realities present at school environment. In this sense, Science education is characterized by the presentation of concepts, laws and formulas in a disjointed and detached way of the students reality. Learning can become meaningful as it approaches specific situations of the student daily life in order to enable the assignment of meaning to such knowledge. The inclusion of transversal themes in education is an approximation of the curriculum content with emergent social and cultural issues. Traffic education can be used as a resource for the teaching of science as it furthers our understanding of different physical concepts in context with daily situations of the student’s life. This paper presents the development and research results on the use of a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (PMTU) structured on Traffic Education theme in Science classes of elementary school. The research sought to answer the central questions of the investigation: is it possible to develop meaningful learning of Kinematics in the context of Traffic Education? A PMTU is a viable alternative for this purpose? The research is qualitative, descriptive, experimental, and participant aimed to verify the potential of a new teaching, learning and assessment strategy for the occurrence of meaningful learning. Data analysis used as tools written productions of students, concept maps, diagnostic and summative assessment, the teaching practice daybook. The PMTU has been applied in a class of 9th grade of elementary school in a public school in Bom Princípio / RS. The results showed evidences of the occurrence of meaningful learning on conceptual, procedural and attitudinal contents. The different evaluation tools used showed that the cognitive structure of the students evolved in the different dimensions of learning. The elaboration of the conceptual maps showed advances in the progressive differentiation and the creation of problem situations by students brought evidence of integrative reconciliation. The study also showed that this teaching strategy produced substantial dialogue interactions in the classroom as well as reflection on attitudes and values on traffic, in a humanistic perspective. These results suggest that PMTU has potential to contribute to new forms of teaching and learning science.

The neoliberal ideology try hard to mass-produce an education in which the contemporary ways of thinking be coherent with the capitalist mode of production. The citizenship that derives from this logic finds fundaments in the laws enunciated by Thomas Hobbes and in the thinking of John Locke. The hobbesian man is motivated by your passions and selfish desires, moved by your possessive individualism. This man, wolf of other man, whose actions has no social ends, and who lives in permanent state of war against all, has any correspondence with the vehicle s driver of the urban agglomerates of the XXI century? The State modernizes its panoptic power taking advantage of new technologies, with the purpose of remain omniscient and omnipresent, and keep the individual in permanent surveillance. From the lockean theory derives the liberal thinking that imposes urgencies and artificials needs of consume to the driver. If the society s extrinsic motivation is the immediate satisfaction of an private consume of the public space, the pacts of living together and the security recommendations are damaged. With the objective of deep theoretical studies that aim to justify the importance of being inserted contents of traffic education in the elementary school, aspiring to one formation that leads the child to be a responsible citizen in the society, in the roles of pedestrian, conductor and passenger, rises the problem: which are the limits and the possibilities for the insertion of the traffic education as curricular contents in the initial years of the elementary school, as opening of horizons for the citizenship in the neoliberal State? The theoretical basis uses references of the critical theory based on the historic-dialectic materialism, and consider the contributions of the post modern speech too. The bibliographic research investigates the neoliberalism as advanced stage of the capitalist mode of production, explores the correlation between traffic and citizenship in the context of the neoliberal State, describes the process of curriculum elaboration, characterizes the traditionals, criticals and post criticals curriculars theories, discuss some possibilities of teaching and learning of the theme traffic as curricular contents in the pedagogic practices of the initial years of the elementary school. It defends the thesis that the contemporary society, specially the parcel that comes from the privileged field of the education, don t must remain omitted in relation of the traffic problems. It concludes that the denial of the reality relative to the area of traffic (antithesis) is an movement of overcoming, of constant fight, a search of alternatives, inside the dynamic process of evolution, whose results (synthesis) can be minimal, imperceptible or unforeseen, but that feed the bet on the ideal of progress, even if attenuated and unbalanced by the post modern speeches. It concludes too that as much the individualist conception of the public space as the conditions for the transposition of an culture of the manly war to an culture of traffic safe might constitute possibilities of aching and learning of the theme traffic as curricular contents in the elem te entary school.

Abstract:
International organisations such as the World Health Organisation highlight the road crash problem in less motorised (or developing, or low income) countries like those in Southeast Asia and recommend the adoption of Western road safety measures. However, there are many differences between highly motorised and less motorised countries which raise questions about how successfully Western road safety knowledge and expertise can be transferred.----- A review of the statistical information on road crashes shows a great deal of uncertainty about both the scale and likely trajectory of road fatalities globally, in less motorised countries and in Asia. It is generally agreed, however, that Asia accounts for around half of all road fatalities, and analysis of the limited available data shows both that Southeast Asia is not an atypical region of Asia in road safety terms, and that Thailand and Vietnam are not atypical of Southeast Asian countries.----- A literature review of recommended practice approaches to road safety transfer in Asia shows that there are many economic, institutional, social and cultural factors which potentially influence the success of transfer. The review also shows that there is no coherent, comprehensive approach which either conceptualises these factors and their relationship to transfer outcomes, or uses an analysis of these factors to plan or modify transfer. To address this gap, this thesis develops a 'road safety space' model as a tool for conceptualisation and analysis, based on a biological metaphor which views the transfer of road safety measures from one context to another as analogous to the transfer of a species into a new ecological space. The road safety space model explicitly considers economic, institutional, social and cultural factors (from specific to broad) which influence the particular road safety issue which a particular road safety transfer effort seeks to address. A central contention of this thesis is that the road safety space model is both a feasible and useful tool to improve the process of road safety transfer to less motorised countries. Road safety space analysis is seen to have a role in a broader process of selection of road safety measures for transfer, along with knowledge of how the measures are considered to operate.----- The research reported in this thesis is comprised of three studies. Study 1 reviewed evaluations of road safety transfer to Thailand and Vietnam. Studies 2 and 3 were case studies of road safety transfer to Thailand and Vietnam respectively.----- Study 1 was an analysis of existing evaluations of road safety transfer to Thailand and Vietnam. The aims were to analyse the evaluations for their consideration of contextual factors, as described in the road safety space model, and to discuss whether the road safety space model assisted in understanding the reasons for success or failure of transfer. However, very few such evaluations exist, and those that were found generally lacked information on whether contextual factors were considered. This indicated the need for a more detailed, in-depth qualitative investigation of particular cases of road safety transfer, in order to investigate the feasibility and utility of the road safety space model.----- Two case studies (Study 2 and Study 3) were conducted to test whether the road safety space approach was both feasible and useful as a means of improving road safety transfer efforts. Study 2 was a case study of the development and implementation in Thailand of a road safety education program for school children, which involved the transfer of Western research and techniques. The transfer agents (i.e. those who effected the road safety transfer) were Australian consultants working for the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB). The transfer was funded by the World Bank and managed by the Thai Ministry of Education (MOE). Study 3 was a case study of the development and implementation of a motorcycle helmet wearing program in Vietnam, which involved the transfer of Western knowledge, techniques and technology. The transfer agents were staff of Asia Injury (AI), a non-government organisation (NGO), and the program was funded initially by a charitable fund, with the intention of becoming self-funding through operation of a helmet factory.----- The case studies employed background research into existing information on economic, institutional, social and cultural factors relevant to the road safety issues (road use behaviour of school children in Thailand and motorcycle helmet purchase and wearing in Vietnam), and collected data through interviews with key informants, analysis of secondary sources and observations. This information was used to derive the road safety space for each road safety issue, to identify the road safety space recognised and addressed by the transfer agents (ARRB and AI), and to determine which factors they missed, or were aware of but took no action on. The focus of this analysis was on the processes used in transfer, not on the road safety outcomes of transfer, although these provided information on the processes as well. Available evaluation information was used to draw links between the omissions and the success of the transfer processes. It was noted that information on how the transferred measures operate should come from a road safety space analysis in the originating country, although this raised questions about selection of country and time (when the measure was first introduced, or in its maturity).----- The feasibility and utility of the road safety space model were discussed. It was clear that the model provided information on the cases which was missed by the transfer agents. The questions examined next were whether this information could have been obtained from an exercise conducted before the transfer had commenced, whether the required effort and cost justified the potential benefits, and whether the information on the road safety space could have been useful for the transfer agents. Comparisons between the road safety spaces for the two cases showed some areas of commonality, e.g. perceptions of police corruption, but also many differences. It was considered likely that some broad factors could be generic, and the possibility was mooted that less motorised countries share issues with police enforcement. This requires further research, however, and at this stage it is better to treat each road safety space as a unique combination of contextual factors influencing the road safety issue of interest.----- It is concluded that the road safety space model is feasible if used in such a way as to minimise the research involved, and useful, although the degree of utility needs to be further explored in a prospective study. The limitation introduced by restricting informants to those who could speak English are discussed. An approach using road safety space analysis is recommended, emphasising analysis of the country to which the road safety measure is being transferred, supplemented by analysis of the originating country road safety space. Gaps in knowledge are identified for further research and development, in particular the theoretical and practical understanding of road use behaviours and their modification in less motorised countries in Southeast Asia. Elaboration of the model is also recommended, to take into account the influence of the type of measure transferred, the role of the transfer agent, the area of road safety (education, engineering or enforcement), and the time dimension (the time which might be needed for a transfer to show its effects).----- The findings of this research are likely to be applicable to road safety transfer in other less motorised regions of the world, however prospective testing is needed. They may also be relevant to issues of transfer for areas other than road safety, in particular public health and traffic engineering, where similar economic, institutional, social and cultural issues come together.

Abstract:
Traffic accidents prevention must be taught since childhood, because children's behavior will be able to change the statistics of accidents in the long-term. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of edutherapeutic intervention to prevent traffic accidents with children. It is characterized as a randomized controlled trial, conducted with 173 children from public school in northeast region of Brazil, divided into experimental group, EG (n = 90) and control group, CG (n = 83). Data collection took place in four stages in the second semester of 2014, with evaluation of variables: knowledge, attitudes and practices that reveal what children know, feel and how they behave in relation to this issue. Chi-square test was used for analysis of categorical variables. The t test was used in the EG to compare the moments before and after the intervention for the variables knowledge, attitudes and practices in the paired data, as well as the comparison between the moments of initial and final evaluations of CG and to compare EG and CG. The significance level used was 5%. The groups were similar regarding sociodemographic variables, form of transport of children, experience with traffic accidents and prevention. There was no difference in the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices among the groups at initial evaluation. In the final assessment, there was improvement in knowledge of EG (p = 0.027). It was also observed a tendency of improvement in attitudes (p = 0.06), not accompanied by significant increase in practices. Comparing EG before and after the intervention, there was a significant difference (p = 0.003) in relation to knowledge. Regarding CG, the initial and final assessment showed that children’s knowledge had greater number of correct answers at the initial evaluation, but no significant difference (p = 0.085), and there was a reduction in the level of appropriate attitudes and practices with significant difference, respectively (p = 0.033) (p = 0.003). The intervention increased the EG level of knowledge in relation to CG, however, attitudes and practices remained stable. In EG, the intervention increased the level of knowledge and kept the attitudes and practices at the same level. In the control group, the lack of intervention tended to have a negative impact on the level of appropriate attitudes and practices, and knowledge was affected, but not significantly. Thus, the intervention influenced significantly the practices and attitudes in comparison to knowledge.

Abstract:
Many transportation proposals aim to enhance child traffic safety, and they suggest environmental interventions, law enforcements, and educational methods as the solutions. However, educational approach has not been focusing on practices. When we consider children’s perceptual immature, hand-on education should be more efficient than verbal education. Thus, through an examination of typical child motor vehicle-related crash types in Austin and recent interviews, this Professional Report proposes a Children’s Traffic Park as a practical educational method that delivers traffic rules and influences children’s attitudes and behaviours to traffic.

Road traffic accidents in modern society are viewed as unavoidable and such accidents occur mostly due to improper thoughts on road safety as well as undesirable traffic behavior. According to the campus security and disaster events analysis report by Ministry of Education in 2015, 5621 out of 15038 student accident cases are traffic accidents, accounting for 37.4 %. Obviously, traffic accidents have posed a threat to the safety of students. To decrease road traffic accidents, it is considered helpful that schools at all levels put emphasis on traffic safety education and instill the importance of traffic security in students. By doing so, the road traffic accidents in Taiwan are believed to remarkably decline Nevertheless, to help students with special educational needs benefit from traffic education in schools, it is considered significant in this paper that the first step is to identify the challenges faced by those students. Then, based on the road user’s response procedures of behavioral decision, the road behavior of students with special educational needs are analyzed, classified and generalized by means of the traffic behavior’s information receiving system, the decision-making system, and the action system. Along with traffic safety courses and programs, eight key points are proposed: life education, education of moral responsibility and the ethics of traffic safety, traffic rules awareness education, road users education, prevention and treatment of accidental hazards, learning about transportation vehicles, vehicle operation and maintenance as well as traffic environment and facilities. Proper learning programs, planned for students with special educational needs with a reference to regular class curriculum, are proposed to serve as a referencing guideline for special education teachers who work to make individualized education programs or lesson plans about traffic safety. It is expected that after leaving or graduating from school, students with special educational needs are able to show appropriate traffic behavior so that the incidence of traffic accidents can be reduced.

According to the statistics of occupational injuries made by the Bureau of Labor Insurance, the number of labors died due to traffic accidents is over 40 % of the total occupational death toll. Furthermore, according to the statistics of the related documents, most accidents are related to negligence so labors training should be the most effective method for preventing traffic accidents. This research adopted quasi-experimental designs and used the employees of certain car research institution in the Changpin Industrial Park as the research objects. The experimental group attended the defensive driving training courses while the control group did not. Before the training courses, two groups did the tests and the results of the test were used as the bases for the evaluation of the experiment and after the training courses, the two groups did the tests again to show the effects of the training. The main findings of this research were as follows: (1) before the training course, about the ideas of the defensive driving and their actual behaviors, there was no obvious differences between the two groups, (2) after the training course, there was an increasing defensive ideas of employees and in prediction of the road risks, the experimental group were better than those in the control group, (3) after the training course, in application of defensive ideas in the actual driving, the experimental group were better than those in the control group, (4) after the training course, the experimental group could keep the defensive driving knowledge sustainability, (5) In the chi-square test analysis, the results indicated that there was an obvious relativity between the drivers’ ages, experiences of accidents, learning willingness, and the times of trainings taken and the understanding and application of the defensive driving, (6) in the correlation analysis, the results of knowledge and application of the defensive driving indicated that there was an obvious relativity between before and after the training courses, (7) after the training course, in the traffic accidents of vocation from 2006 to 2007, the experimental group was fewer than that of the control group, (8)according to the learning willingness of employees, both the experimental group and control group had strong willingness to attend the defensive driving training courses, (9) according to improve the training courses of employees, the skills of reconciliation negotiation, dynamic characteristics of cars, first aid, and some basic laws will be needed. This research would refer the suggestions to the corporations and related authorized agencies to promote the trainings of preventing traffic accidents of vocation.

Road fatalities claim more than one million lives annually worldwide. The emotional, social and economic impact of road traffic fatalities demands urgent attention globally. This epidemic of road traffic fatalities is plaguing everyone, especially the poorer nations. Some countries like Australia and Sweden have been more successful than others in combating this epidemic. South Africa is currently seeking strategies to combat this epidemic because South Africa’s road traffic fatalities have been increasing annually, with a substantial percentage of teenagers and young adults between the ages of 16 and 29 contributing to these statistics. This age group will become or already have become part of the economically active population and concern is mounting as to why this particular age group is vulnerable. This thesis provides an overview of the road safety problem globally, nationally, provincially and locally and also looks at the historical factors that have contributed to this problem. The Victorian model, which has been classified as the ‘world’s best practice’, has been reviewed. A pilot survey was conducted at the Mangosuthu Technikon and the focal survey was conducted at the tertiary institutions in the Durban area. Students from this sector were selected as they fall in the most vulnerable age group and data was collected from them on various aspects of road safety. On analysing the data, various problems were identified, in particular, lack of resources and limited education pertaining to road safety. A range of possible solutions is recommended and the focus areas are the 3E’s namely: education, enforcement and engineering. However, the focal recommendation is on education and looks at the possibility of introducing learner’s licence testing to the grade 12 syllabi.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current practice of traffic safety education programs in the elementary schools by revising the traffic safety education manual, teaching methods, and performance assessment. Based on the review of some related literature, understanding of domestic students'' traffic accident characteristics, and examination on the practice of elementary school traffic safety education programs, a new goal for traffic safety education is proposed and twenty-five subject contents are designed. In order to revise the manual and to propose effective teaching methods and performance assessment, a questionnaire survey is conducted to 85 elementary schools, which are acknowledged with good performance in traffic safety education from 1995 to 1997. The results show that there exist significant difference in opinion for the importance of nine subject contents between the teachers in the city and town. A cluster analysis is further conducted and it is found that there are eight subject contents suited for the lower grade, seven for the middle grade and nine for the upper grade. The subject content ”tips for safe bicycling” is suited for the upper grade in the city schools and the middle grade in the town schools. Based on this result, we revise the manual of traffic safety education and propose effective teaching methods as well as performance assessment for each subject content.

This study explores the ways and feasibility of the introduction of the course of traffic safety education, and puts forward the best way to implement the traffic safety course. According to this study, the experimental study method is adopted to design and evaluate the lesson plans of the junior high school students. The collected data are t test and average, and the teaching effect is compared before and after teaching. First of all, by the literature to explore the introduction of small national traffic safety education courses into the formal curriculum and integration into the informal curriculum two. And then design a formal and informal traffic safety education course with the Learning Module of the Pedestrian Safety Code, which you can not but know, and then conduct a teaching test. After the actual implementation of teaching and analysis of teaching effectiveness, with its statistical analysis of the conclusions obtained.(1) into the formal curriculum of teaching methods and integration of informal courses can improve the senior students of traffic safety awareness. (2) into the formal curriculum of teaching methods than to integrate informal courses can enhance students' awareness of traffic safety more. (3) into the formal curriculum for a class of forty minutes, and into the informal course of the implementation of four times ten minutes, are able to complete the course professor, and to achieve teaching objectives. According to the above results, it can be seen from the research results that the integration of formal courses can effectively improve the traffic safety awareness of senior students, and does not affect the teaching of other areas of the class, so the formal training of traffic safety education appropriate amount of relevant areas Is feasible. However, if you can not integrate into the formal course of the current situation, the use of student morning or rally, the use of multiple decentralized time teaching, but also can improve the senior students of traffic safety cognitive ability.

In Taiwan, the implementation of traffic safety education assessment (TSEA) has enhanced the traffic safety concepts of the students for these years. However, the continuous improving of traffic safety and the performance of the TSEA for schools are the important issue. This research adopted stratified random sampling in the scope which containing 134 elementary schools, which have accepted field survey for Traffic Safety Education Assessments held by Ministry of Education and 19 involved Departments of Education in local governments from 2007 to 2011. Totally we deliver 1,725 questionnaires and get 752 valid ones in return. Moreover, the data analysis had been progressed in statistics manners below: frequency distribution, percentage, average, independent-sample T test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s posterior comparison, Dunnett test etc. The discoveries of the research are: (1)Differences lie between the present conditions of promoting Traffic Safety Education in schools and the inspections of Departments of Education. Besides, the self-inspecting effects of schools themselves are not realized literally after publicizing and educating. Furthermore, the executive resources provided by Departments of Education are not sufficient to support Traffic Safety Education. (2)The issue of making Traffic Safety Education a formal course is not recognized by most of the interviewees both in schools and Departments of Education. (3)The whole system and the performances of TSEA held by Ministry of Education are not recognized by most of the teachers, plus, the schools do not try hard as well to improve at the suggestions offered by the surveyors of Ministry of Education. (4)Compared to the cities or counties whose schools gain lower assessment grades, the ones whose schools get higher grades obviously have more significant sense of recognition to the circumstances of pushing Traffic Safety Education. For Ministry and Departments of Education, all the discoveries of the research can not only be references given in the aspects of implementing Traffic Safety Education Assessments in the near future, but also strengthen the efforts on implementation of Traffic safety Education.
