Abstract:
Objective: This article presents the development, implementation, and evaluation of a crew resource management (CRM) training program specifically designed for employees within the automotive industry. Background: The central objective of this training program was to improve communication, teamwork, and stress management skills as well to increase the workers’ situational awareness of potential errors that can occur during the production process. Method: Participants in the training program of this study were 80 employees, all of whom were working in a production unit for gearbox manufacturing. Effectiveness of the CRM training course was evaluated two times (1 month and 6 months after the training program). Results: The results showed a significant improvement in a wide range of CRM-relevant categories, especially in teamwork-related attitudes, in addition to an increase in the workers’ situational awareness after the training program. Conclusion: On the basis of the results, it can be stated that CRM training, which was originally developed for the aviation industry, can be transferred to the automotive industry. However, because of the lack of behavioral observations, these effects are limited to CRM attitudes and knowledge changes. Application: Several recommendations for future research and training development in the field of human factors training are made.

Abstract:
The video game industry which originated in 1960s is now an important entertainment industry mostly thanks to the digital revolution, especially as of 2000s. In parallel, the video game industry gains today million dollars and this will be increasing more as the number of gamers enhances. Therefore, this study emphasizes the position of the game localization training within the academic translation teaching by analysing two universities’ translation courses and thus questions the availability and the position of the game localization training among the related courses. The study also touched on other universities in this regard. Before the analysis, the study offers some information about the definition of the game localization, some of its features and its reflections on the related courses. In addition, aspects such as the translation competence which would-be translators must develop and tools used in the process so as to make student translators familiar with this new type of translation and to raise their awareness are also included.

Abstract:
The 21st century endeavour bring new challenges for the maritime industry. The challenges facing the professionals within the industry are multifaceted and complex due to globalization, cross-cultural interrelationships, and technological change that are permeating the maritime industry. The aim of this article is to contribute to better understanding the problem of developing the future maritime industry professional, filling the existing gap between education and training programmes, while integrating the 21st century professional skills. The contents of a comprehensive education and training programme shall be proposed within a knowledge triangle encompassing academia, the industry and relevant authority or regulatory institutions, so all interested parties’ “voices” will be considered. Besides raising awareness for the educational and training challenges ahead, more effective teaching methods are suggested in order to meet the needs, particularly supporting double loop learning, together with a pragmatic proposal for a realistic programme at master’s level. The proposed programme is based on the EU MarLEM project, which aims towards the development of the 21st century maritime industry professional, focusing on logistics, engineering and management contents.

Abstract:
Purpose The manufacturing industry is a well-known source of interventions adapted to solve problems in the construction industry. The use of Training-Within-Industry (TWI) is one such intervention adopted in the construction industry to solve the construction problem relating to occupational health and safety (OHS). The objectives of TWI are to help the industry to transfer knowledge and skills from management to the employees. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to investigate whether TWI can reduce OHS problems by promoting “learning by doing” on construction sites. Design/methodology/approach A case-based-research method was used to investigate the reported OHS problems in the construction industry in South Africa. The data were quantitative and qualitative in nature; the questionnaire survey, semi-structured interview and focus group interview techniques were used to collect data in the study. Findings The findings provide a better understanding of the human contributions influencing the behaviour of people causing accidents on construction sites. The data show that construction project leaders struggle to promote “learning by doing” because of inappropriate behaviour, lack of communication and inadequate training provided to new workers on construction sites. Also, there is significant scope for TWI deployment in construction because of the inability of supervisors or management to promote “learning by doing” on construction sites. Practical implications Based on the research findings, it is discovered that OHS is a serious concern in the construction industry. Therefore, the adoption of learning by doing on a construction site would help to improve OHS outcome. Originality/value The study highlights the need to introduce TWI on construction sites to reduce human failure causing accidents. TWI could lead to improving the knowledge- and skills-transfer programmes for construction workers in favour of better safety performance.

Moore, Stephen. "Attitudes towards training within the hospitality industry in southeast Wales." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/6493.

Full text
Abstract:
Training within the hospitality industry is a widely-debated issue with different stakeholders having differing views depending on their background and representation in the debate. This industry is therefore no different to other industries in the opinions that predominate. What is clear however is that the hospitality industry in the UK is currently suffering from an acute skills shortage. This study is concerned with analysing the attitudes of some of these key stakeholders towards the types of training that are employed in hospitality, and whether these approaches are suitable as training paradigms. The study focuses specifically on attitudes in Southeast Wales amongst employers, educators and training providers using a case-study methodology. The research was undertaken in three phases. The first two phases of the study were concerned with assessing the attitudes of the employers. In phase 1 local employers were initially questioned using a focus-group approach. The results informed phase 2 which involved a series of individual interviews with employers from a range of hospitality sectors (including hotels, restaurants, fast-food outlets, public houses, motorway service stations, and catering services outlets) across Southeast Wales. A typology of the vocational training models used in the different sectors, with clear identification of the perceived effectiveness and acceptability of these models to the different employer groups, was developed. The research findings from phase 1 and phase 2 were also developed into a pictogram which represents the key features influencing training within SMEs and larger hospitality companies. A recurring theme during the first two phases was the contrasting employer attitudes towards NVQs as a suitable training model. Phase 3 of the research explored these attitudes further by involving other stakeholders involved in NVQ delivery – the educators and training providers - as well as assessing whether attitudes in Southeast Wales are different to, or representative of, a larger geographical area. A series of individual interviews were therefore conducted with educators and training providers in Southeast Wales, the rest of Wales, and England. The results indicated that attitudes do not differ based on location, but instead several key themes were identified that were common to the participants. Phase 3 of the research also involved a quantitative approach to explore these themes more fully using a larger sample size. An e-questionnaire was sent to representative further education lecturers, higher education lecturers, and training providers across Wales and England. The results concluded that there are perceived strengths with the NVQ model, but that the weaknesses are significant and many respondents would welcome the introduction of an alternative training model. The study concludes by proposing an alternative model and making recommendations for future developments in hospitality skills training.

Egbu, Charles Odita. "Management education and training for refurbishment work within the construction industry." Thesis, University of Salford, 1994. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14743/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is concerned with the management of refurbishment work within the UK construction industry, from a contractors' perspective. It investigates the main difficulties and problems which managers face in refurbishment work, together with the management skills and knowledge which they need and bring to their work. Management education and training needs of the organisation is also considered. The methodology is a combination of both semi-structured interviews and a postal questionnaire. A total of 142 completed questionnaires from senior, middle and junior managers of 32 large refurbishment (general and specialist) organisations, formed the data base for the quantitative analysis. The quantitative data was augmented by qualitative information derived from semi-structured interviews with 32 training officers and 22 refurbishment managers. Analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data determined the relative degree of difficulty associated with managing refurbishment tasks, and the qualities and attributes associated with successful management of refurbishment projects. It also allowed for the evaluation of management education and training provisions within refurbishment, together with education and training backgrounds of managers. Course duration, location and factors affecting their selection and attendance also received consideration. The major characteristics and difficulties associated with managing refurbishment works have been established. Results of the study show that refurbishment work is complex, highly specialised and contains elements of work which are unique to the refurbishment sector. The educational background of refurbishment managers indicates that majority of refurbishment managers have a trades background, coming through the ranks mainly as joiners and bricklayers. A skills and knowledge inventory for refurbishment management has also been devised. The study also demonstrates that there is little, if any, management courses, inhouse or external, directly geared towards refurbishment. The study recommends that guidelines advocating "how best" to overcome refurbishment problems and difficulties" for different types of refurbishment projects, and refurbishment works across industrial sectors, i.e. defence, hotel and health service sectors, be produced. Similarly, research to establish the core management skills/knowledge associated with successful accomplishment of the various types of refurbishment projects, and refurbishment works across industrial sectors is needed. Further research needs to be conducted on personal qualities and attributes of refurbishment managers who are associated with successful accomplishment of various types of refurbishment projects. Research to establish the extent and degree of involvement of the client, contractor and the rest of the design team, especially refurbishment managers, in carrying out refurbishment work is recommended. Further research to establish management education and training needs of medium and small size refurbishment organisations is suggested. Following the development of a model for postgraduate and continuing professional development (CPD) management education and training programmes, research into "how best" refurbishment management education can be successfully and widely introduced into undergraduate curricular is needed.

Van, Heerden Alan Joshua. "The development of a competency based model for training operators within the confectionery industry." Thesis, Port Elizabeth Technikon, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/83.

Full text
Abstract:
Most South African manufacturing companies provide some sort of training for its shop floor employees to help them improve productivity and reduce wastage. Unfortunately, training presented on-the-job to operators is more often than not implemented in an unstructured and unplanned manner, usually when a crisis occurs and fires need to be put out quickly. The introduction of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) demands that training practitioners structure their training efforts and ensure that all training leads to national qualifications. This study is aimed at making a contribution towards the NQF and in particular, the development of shop floor employees. Firstly, a model for operator training was developed from a survey of the relevant literature. This phase of the study identified the components of the model and their respective guidelines. Secondly, the model was e.mailed to managers working in confectionery companies requesting their opinion on the guidelines of the model. Lastly, the feedback received from the empirical study was evaluated, conclusions were drawn and recommendations made, based on the information obtained from both the literature study and empirical study. The results from the empirical study indicated strong concurrence with the theoretical model on operator training. In contrast to theory that the use of rewards after training results in improved productivity, the majority of respondents disagreed with the implementation of a reward What are the long term benefits to an organization with a productivity reward system in place? · What kind of reward system would work best in the confectionery industry? · How would management implement an effective performancerelated reward system at shop floor level?

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Busines Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
Motivating employees in fast food outlets plays a major role towards improving the commitment and performance of workers. However, it has been confirmed that there is low levels of employee motivation in some fast food outlets, which has led to negative results and poor performances. Therefore, improving employee motivation in fast food outlets has become a necessity. The main aim of the study was to investigate causes of low employee motivation in fast food outlets within South Africa. The present author was able to discover the causes of low employee motivation levels such as poor supervision, little or no training, poor pay and poor working conditions. Hence, factors that could improve levels of motivation of employees in fast food outlets were identified; for instance, motivating fast food employees through genuine appreciation, recognition, compensation and inspiration. The researcher further suggests strategies, which may improve the quality of work-life for employees with fast food outlets training and developing employees, reducing their workload; and initiating incentive programs and retention strategies. This will help the management at fast food outlets to improve levels of motivation of their workers, and also assist them to retain their talented staff. The case study method was used for this research since the study involved fast food outlets in Cape Town. The triangulation method was applied to solicit information from staff members, managers and store managers/franchisees. Semi-structured interview questions were used to obtain information from franchisees/store managers, senior managers, floor managers, and supervisors, while closed-ended questionnaires were used to interview other staff members. This study has confirmed that there are no motivation policies at most of the fast food outlets which were studied that can guide employers to motivate their workers. It is clear from the study that there is low employee motivation at some fast food outlets, and hence the researcher has proposed recommendations, which will help the management of fast food outlets to enhance the levels of motivation of employees, and their work performance. It is suggested that employees should be involved in the decision making of their organization; the quality of work-life of employees should be improved; a harmonious working environment should be promoted; and workers should be empowered and allowed to participate in the profit sharing of the organization. This will improve workers' levels of motivation and better results will be achieved for the organization at large.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Construction)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Emerging contractors have relished greater privileges since the first democratically elected government in South Africa came into power in 1994 but are faced with numerous challenges. The government has placed numerous resources, ranging from training and development programmes, enabling legislative laws and regulations in an attempt to address these challenges and to turn emerging contractors to sustainable contractors. Knowledge transfer through training of emerging contractors, either from established contractors in a project set-up or training providers in a class room, has being recognised as the most effective mechanisms for development and growth of the emerging contractors. This study focuses on latter mechanism of emerging contractor development. The intended training outcomes of the structured training offered to emerging contractors by training providers in a class room set-up, remains and they experience several obstacles. This research focuses on a particular contractor development programme to investigate the effectiveness Western Cape Contractor Development Programme training programme and subsequently to enhance the training programme. The study focuses on specific aspects of training which researcher feels that they were significant: to explore the nature of existing TNA offered at Western Cape Contractor Development Programme , to investigate the trainer’s competences required in the WCCDP structured training, to examine the existing monitoring and evaluation indicators used to gauge the effectiveness of the Western Cape Contractor Development Programme structured training offered to emerging contractors and to explore the assessment strategies used at the Western Cape Contractor Development Programme, in order to measure the trainees’ learning. The study adopted a case study approach since it dealt with a particular contractor development programme in Western Cape, South Africa. A triangulation of both quantitative and qualitative methods was used to answer the research questions, achieve the research objectives and overcome matters with validity and bias. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the programme coordinators, service provider trainer, service provider facilitator and service provider project manager. A total of 50 self-administered closed-ended questionnaires were distributed to gather data from trainees, only 35 were handed back to the researcher representing a response rate 70%.Therefore a purposive sampling was adopted. To corroborate empirical data collected an observation of the training was conducted. Content analysis was used to analyse qualitative data; descriptive and inferential statics using the SPSS software was used quantitative data. The findings from the study revealed that the Western Cape Contractor Development Programme has lack of comprehensive managerial training needs analaysis approach, no measurable indicators established for monitoring and evaluation; programme has no competency assessment or screening process and lack of adequate knowledge on assessment design and implementation. Therefore, this is largely responsible for the problems at Western Cape Contractor Development Programme and has a negative impact on the programme. It is evident from the findings of the study that Western Cape Contractor Development Programme must develop a comprehensive and formal training needs analysis process to identify the actual needs, design and implement a proper measurable indicators for the monitoring and evaluation system in order to monitor the progress of the programme, training policies and objectives must be revisited for amend, tighten seriously, implemented and monitored regularly with all the concerned stakeholders, develop a trainer competency screening process and appoint a training expert to ensure that relevant assessment strategies are used for assessing the trainees and ensure that desired training outcomes and objectives are achieved to enhance the programme.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The intensifying value of learning, competence, and knowledge motivates decisions toward implementing knowledge management systems (KMS) to capitalize on the potential benefits of facilitating knowledge sharing, collecting, storing, and dissemination on a global scale. However, these systems frequently remain underutilized, and organizations encounter obstacles to achieve their proposed outcome. The case company experienced practical problems regarding a newly implemented KMS. The system was largely unused for a specific process. Therefore, this case study investigates the factors affecting KMS adoption and utilization for the technical training process by capturing the perspectives of the intended system users and management. A combination of KMS success factors and The Theory of Affordances were applied to generate knowledge regarding how factors affected the usage of the KMS. It was found that Management Involvement, Organizational Culture and Structure, Employee Commitment, Perceived Benefits, System Complexity, and Compatibility and Conformity influenced the users' KMS utilization outcomes. A conceptual framework was developed to show how these factors affected individuals' affordances process.

Abstract:
Employee turnover can cost an organization a significant amount of money. In addition, retention of employees can beneficial towards to an organization as it e.g. allows to save costs related torecruitment and training of new employees. The fast food industry is recognized as an industry which employs low-skilled employees and is especially in the United States known to be prone to high employee turnover. With regards to Europe, only little information is available in the field of low-skilled employee retention in the fast food industry. Looking towards the Netherlands, there has been no conducted research concerning this topic from a manager’s perspective allowing to identify the best HR practices to limit employee turnover in the organization. Our purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of the practices on employee retention of low-skilled employees in the Dutch fast food industry. To be able to meet this purpose, the following research question was developed “How do managers address retention of low-skilled employees in the Dutch fast food industry?” To be able to answer this research question, a multiple case study was conducted to study several franchises of the Dutch fast food organization “Verhage fast food”. We chose to conduct a qualitative study by developing semi-structured interviews. The empirical material was collected by interviewing an HR manager and the CEO of Verhage to develop an overview of the organization. Furthermore, we conducted five interviews with franchisees of Verhage. These franchisees were chosen based on four criteria being location, variety in experience, amount of employees, and amount of franchises owned. These four criteria ensured that the chosen franchisees in our study are active in different environmental settings. These interviews were conducted with the aim to find out how these franchisees perceive low-skilled employee retention and to identify how these franchisees address retention through the implementation of HR practices. Our study provided a contribution that shows the most effective HR practices in the fields of recruitment and selection, training and development, career development, and recognition and rewards are depending on the situational factors. Whereas one franchisee needs to pay well above minimum wage to attract low-skilled employees, another franchisee can easily pay the employees minimum wages without the need to worry for job applicants. Another contribution based on the outcome of our study is that the provision of training and responsibilities besides being done to benefit the company in e.g. productivity it also results in more engaging employees with a higher intention to stay.

Abstract:
In many organizations around the world, the need to manage and structure information is a growing factor. This is possible with a system support, in which documentation of processes within a company can be handled. With potential risks in focus, the purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how production and material management processes in a company can be structured and to develop a foundation for today's production and procurement processes. The study is a case study in which the documentation at the company is to be increased through a time study, ABC-classification and a discussion of risks with Kraljic's matrix as a base. The result shows shorter production times, that few modules and articles are cost-bearing in production and that today's working methods cause major risks. As a concept for increasing documentation, linking processes at the company and eliminating these risks, the authors recommend Training Within Industry, which concludes the report.

Full text
Abstract:
Focusing on the history of scientific and technological development over recent centuries, the book is dedicated to the history of telecommunications, where Italy has always been in the vanguard, and is presented by many of the protagonists of the last half century. The book is divided into five sections. The first, dealing with the origins, starts from the scientific bases of the evolution of telecommunications in the nineteenth century (Bucci), addressing the developments of scientific thought that led to the revolution of the theory of fields (Morando), analysing the birth of the three fundamental forms of communication – telegraph (Maggi), telephone (Del Re) and radio (Falciasecca) – and ending with the contribution made by the Italian Navy to the development of telecommunications (Carulli, Pelosi, Selleri, Tiberio). The second section, on technical and scientific developments, presents the numerical processing of signals (Rocca), illustrating the genesis and metamorphosis of transmission (Pupolin, Benedetto, Mengali, Someda, Vannucchi), network packets (Marsan, Guadagni, Lenzini), photonics in telecommunications (Prati) and addresses the issue of research within the institutions (Fedi-Morello), dwelling in particular on the CSELT (Mossotto). The next section deals with the sectors of application, offering an overview of radio, television and the birth of digital cinema (Vannucchi, Visintin), military communications (Maestrini, Costamagna), the development of radar (Galati) and spatial telecommunications (Tartara, Marconicchio). Section four, on the organisation of the services and the role of industry, outlines the rise and fall of the telecommunications industries in Italy (Randi), dealing with the telecommunications infrastructures (Caroppo, Gamerro), the role of the providers in national communications (Gerarduzzi), the networks and the mobile and wireless services (Falciasecca, Ongaro) and finally taking a look towards the future from the perspective of the last fifty years (Vannucchi). The last section, dealing with training and dissemination, offers an array of food for thought: university training in telecommunications, with focus on the evolution of legislation and on the professional profiles (Roveri), social and cultural aspects (Longo and Crespellani) as well as a glance over the most important museums, collections and documentary sources for telecommunications in Italy (Lucci, Savini, Temporelli, Valotti). The book is designed to offer a compendium comprising different analytical approaches, and aims to foster an interest in technology in the new generations, in the hope of stimulating potentially innovative research.

Abstract:
AbstractThe fields of Big Data, Data Analytics and Data Science, which are key areas of current and future industrial demand, are quickly growing and evolving. Within Europe, there is a significant skills gap which needs to be addressed. A key activity is to ensure we meet future needs for skills and align the supply of educational offerings with the demands from industry and society. In this chapter, we detail one step in this direction, a programme to recognise Data Science skills. The chapter introduces the data skills challenge and the importance of formal and non-formal education. It positions data skills within a framework for skills and education, and it reviews key projects which have advanced the data skills agenda. It then introduces recognition frameworks for formal and non-formal Data Science training, and it details a methodology to achieve consensus between interested stakeholders in both academia and industry, and the platforms needed to be deployed for the proposal. Finally, we present a case study of the application of recognition frameworks within an online educational portal for students.

Abstract:
The STYLE project considers structural integrity for lifetime management of non-reactor pressure vessel components of nuclear power plant. The project is funded under the seventh European Commission framework programme. A broad objective of the project is to assess, optimise and develop application of advanced tools for structural integrity assessment of reactor coolant pressure boundary components other than the reactor pressure vessel. One aspect of the STYLE project is intended to address the issue of succession planning within the European nuclear industry. With many key technical experts now approaching retirement it is essential to progress the technical expertise of those at an earlier stage of their career in the industry. The paper describes how technical training has been delivered as an integral part of the STYLE project to support retention of the current level of technical capability in future. Diverse aspects of training are described. These include participation in experimental work, numerical modelling and simulation, application of engineering assessment procedures, leak-before-break, probabilistic fracture mechanics and materials behaviour. An illustrative case study is described, in which trainees received practical instruction in the essential steps for technical justification of a leak-before-break argument.

Full text
Abstract:
As per Indian regulations (OISD-STD-141, OISD-2014-SOP, PNGRB T4S, PNGRB IMS etc.), the mandatory requirement for the operators is to perform Cathodic Protection (CP) and/or Coating Integrity above ground survey every five (5) years. The individual Indirect Inspection (IDi) technique or techniques used for such surveys are Closed Interval Survey (CIP) On/ Off, Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG), Current Attenuation Testing (CAT) and Alternating Current Voltage Gradient (ACVG). These techniques primarily assist in evaluating the CP performance, coating condition of the pipeline and locations of probable DC/ AC interferences. Usually these surveys are performed separately and integrated by their respective GPS coordinates to get a common chainage. As per prevailing practice in India, typically the pipeline operators perform a Closed Interval Survey (CIP) On/ Off survey and after reviewing the reports subsequently plan for conducting DCVG, CAT and/or ACVG for certain stretches only, where CIP indications are found. By the time the team is re-mobilized for these surveys the pipeline or environment conditions may be totally different. This may be due to season variability, accuracy of GPS (mapping, if at all conducted during the coating integrity survey), climatic conditions, access to right of way (RoW) due to cultivation / farming cycles, water table variance and eventually fluctuations in the insitu soil resistivity. In addition, interference from other CP sources in the RoW, which may have occurred during interim. All of this can lead to misalignment or incomplete analysis of the integrated consolidated survey data. In addition, these “indirect inspection” surveys are majorly dependent on the experience and training of the surveyor, resulting in extensive subjectivity on the survey results with very limited traceability of collected data. This is unlike the other integrity tools for assessing integrity of a pipeline, such as In-line Inspection (ILI) as well as hydrostatic testing, wherein it is compulsory to provide the pipeline owner recorded footprint of the raw data collected for authenticity. For the CP and coating integrity surveys, if these can be performed simultaneously along with workable recorded raw logs for each survey with recorded GPS position of the surveyor, for further analysis, this does lead to eradicating the subjectivity from the IDi surveyor and providing “true” authentic repeatable results. This paper provides case studies wherein results of legacy IDi surveys are compared to the results of performing all surveys together along with recorded raw logs.

Abstract:
COVID-19 brought the public’s attention to the critical value of transportation and supply chain workers as lifelines to access food and other supplies. This report examines essential job skills required of the middle-skill workforce (workers with more than a high school degree, but less than a four-year college degree). Many of these middle-skill transportation and supply chain jobs are what the Federal Reserve Bank defines as “opportunity occupations” -- jobs that pay above median wages and can be accessible to those without a four-year college degree. This report lays out the complex landscape of selected technological disruptions of the supply chain to understand the new workforce needs of these middle-skill workers, followed by competencies identified by industry. With workplace social distancing policies, logistics organizations now rely heavily on data management and analysis for their operations. All rungs of employees, including warehouse workers and truck drivers, require digital skills to use mobile devices, sensors, and dashboards, among other applications. Workforce training requires a focus on data, problem solving, connectivity, and collaboration. Industry partners identified key workforce competencies required in digital literacy, data management, front/back office jobs, and in operations and maintenance. Education and training providers identified strategies to effectively develop workforce development programs. This report concludes with an exploration of the role of Institutes of Higher Education in delivering effective workforce education and training programs that reimagine how to frame programs to be customizable, easily accessible, and relevant.

Doo, Johnny. Unsettled Issues Concerning eVTOL for Rapid-response, On-demand Firefighting. SAE International, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2021017.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent advancements of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have generated significant interest within and beyond the traditional aviation industry, and many novel applications have been identified and are in development. One promising application for these innovative systems is in firefighting, with eVTOL aircraft complementing current firefighting capabilities to help save lives and reduce fire-induced damages. With increased global occurrences and scales of wildfires—not to mention the issues firefighters face during urban and rural firefighting operations daily—eVTOL technology could offer timely, on-demand, and potentially cost-effective aerial mobility capabilities to counter these challenges. Early detection and suppression of wildfires could prevent many fires from becoming large-scale disasters. eVTOL aircraft may not have the capacity of larger aerial assets for firefighting, but targeted suppression, potentially in swarm operations, could be valuable. Most importantly, on-demand aerial extraction of firefighters can be a crucial benefit during wildfire control operations. Aerial firefighter dispatch from local fire stations or vertiports can result in more effective operations, and targeted aerial fire suppression and civilian extraction from high-rise buildings could enhance capabilities significantly. There are some challenges that need to be addressed before the identified capabilities and benefits are realized at scale, including the development of firefighting-specific eVTOL vehicles; sense and avoid capabilities in complex, smoke-inhibited environments; autonomous and remote operating capabilities; charging system compatibility and availability; operator and controller training; dynamic airspace management; and vehicle/fleet logistics and support. Acceptance from both the first-responder community and the general public is also critical for the successful implementation of these new capabilities. The purpose of this report is to identify the benefits and challenges of implementation, as well as some of the potential solutions. Based on the rapid development progress of eVTOL aircraft and infrastructures with proactive community engagement, it is envisioned that these challenges can be addressed soon. NOTE: SAE EDGE™ Research Reports are intended to identify and illuminate key issues in emerging, but still unsettled, technologies of interest to the mobility industry. The goal of SAE EDGE™ Research Reports is to stimulate discussion and work in the hope of promoting and speeding resolution of identified issues. These reports are not intended to resolve the challenges they identify or close any topic to further scrutiny.
