Abstract:
Biologists have long used demographic approaches to answer questions in ecology and evolution. The utility of these approaches has meant a constant development and refinement of methods. A key milestone has been the development of phenotype structured population models that link ecology and evolution. Moreover, biostatistical research steadily improves methods to coax demographic information from scarce data. In this thesis, I build upon some of the recent advances in the field. My first three studies focus on the consequences of sex differences in life history for population dynamics. Firstly

Abstract:
DNA methylation (DNAm) is the covalent modification of DNA by addition of a methyl group primarily at the cytosine directly upstream of a guanine. DNAm level plays a central role in transcriptional regulation and is linked to disease. Therefore, understanding genetic and environmental influences on DNAm level in healthy tissue is an important step in the elucidation of trait and disease etiology. However, at present only a minority of easy to access human tissues and ethnicities have been investigated. Therefore, we studied DNAm level measured in five human tissues: cerebellum, frontal cortex,

Recent studies suggest a possible correlated evolution of wing morphology, wing beat frequency, muscle biochemistry and flight metabolic rate in bees. In order to investigate the degree to which natural selection can act on these traits, an estimation of heritability was required. Most human traits are influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental effects. Heritability expresses the proportion of trait variance that can be explained by genetic factors, and the 1980s heralded the beginning of studies that aimed to pinpoint genetic loci that contribute to trait variation, also known as quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Subsequently, the availability of cheap, high-resolution genotyping chips ushered in the era of genome-wide association studies (GWAS).

Abstract:
The giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) or GFP is one of the most important freshwater crustacean species in the inland aquaculture sector of many tropical and subtropical countries. Since the 1990’s, there has been rapid global expansion of freshwater prawn farming, especially in Asian countries, with an average annual rate of increase of 48% between 1999 and 2001 (New, 2005). In Vietnam, GFP is cultured in a variety of culture systems, typically in integrated or rotational rice-prawn culture (Phuong et al., 2006) and has become one of the most common farmed aquatic species in

Knowledge of the genetic variation of crop collections is essential for their efficient use in plant breeding programs. The Ethiopian Highland Maize Germplasm Collection Mission was launched throughout the highlands of Ethiopia in 1998 and 287 traditional maize accessions were collected from farmers’ fields. To date, no information was available on the morphological and genetic diversity in this important collection. Various molecular marker techniques and quantitative genetics approaches were applied to accurately unravel the extent of phenotypic and genetic diversity, to study patterns of mo

Dispersal is a key life history trait for ecological and evolutionary processes in wild populations. The latest research has particularly focused on the correlation between behavioural traits and dispersal, in order to emphasize the existence of behavioural syndromes of dispersal, and on the estimation of the genetic basis of the dispersal behaviour. Dispersing individuals are not a random part of the population, but are individuals showing particular strategies, that help them to succeed in their dispersal attempt. This thesis has three main aims of research. The first is to show a genetic ba

I examined phenotypic and genetic variation in growth traits in 30 families of commercial Fraser strain Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) reared in freshwater (FRW) and brackish water (BRW) in Eastern Canada. I detected family by treatment interactions for all traits [body weight (BW), condition factor (K) and specific growth rate (SGR)] across all measurement dates and growth intervals, however, mean family BW in FRW was correlated phenotypically with BRW BW. In addition, FRW fish showed significantly greater survival than those transferred to BRW and fish which survived until the conclusion
