This article examines the literary representation of a treatment of homosexuality in Mexican/Chicano culture. In this study, Alvarez argues that this cultural treatment is rooted in the gender paradigm central to Mexican/Chicano culture: the narrative of La Malinche.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay examines two oppositional figures in Paul Beatty’s debut novel, The White Boy Shuffle (1996), and most recent novel, The Sellout (2015): the exalted race leader and the excoriated race traitor. Positioned at extreme ends of the spectrum of exceptionalism, these figures function to perpetuate a phenomenon that the essay’s author terms the necropolitics of black exceptionalism, the paradox of justifying the violent oppression of the majority of black people by celebrating or censuring a single black figure. In exploring the absurd dimensions of these extreme figures through the lens of satire, both novels denounce black exceptionalism as a necropolitical tool of oppression that entrenches the social death and civic exclusion of black people in a modern US society that purports to be color-blind and postracial. Emerging within the postmodern turn of the African American literary tradition, these novels take on a nihilistic tone to raise questions about how the black community might effectively (if at all) achieve civil progress in the contemporary age. Ultimately, these satirical novels reimagine historically necropolitical spaces, such as the basketball court, the plantation, and the segregated urban neighborhood, as potential, albeit vexed sites of black agency, empowerment, and community building.

Abstract: The idea that one's class position determines one's suitability for overturning bourgeois society was once a staple of communist thought worldwide. Henry James was no radical. But in The Princess Casamassima , following his commitment to a realistic depiction of the political underground of London of the 1880s, James gamely entered into questions of revolutionary strategy. Curiously, the novel rejects the nascent Fabian belief that upper classes, and elite class traitors, can contribute to the overthrow of bourgeois society and instead, in the figure of Paul Muniment, acknowledges the advantages of revolutionary groupings made up of workers with no illusions about their origins.

Abstract:
WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY'SVanity Fair(1847–48) makes a passing reference to a seemingly insignificant trope, the “Black Hole of Calcutta.” Part of an eighteenth-century legacy of unofficial rule in India by the East India Trading Company, this reference to a prison incident in June 1756 rehashes the event that occurred there – nearly one hundred years before the novel was published. The name, the “Black Hole,” evokes the prison itself: an enormous pit dug deep into the ground “eighteenth feet long by fourteen feet, ten inches wide,” according to social historian Brijen K. Gupta. It was “British” in the sense that East India Company agents stationed on-the-ground in Calcutta controlled this makeshift dungeon, using it to enforce local trade agreements with native authorities. Those who intervened were deemed traitors, the worst offenders of state.

Abstract:
Discussing the banning of Salman Rushdie’sSatanic Versesin some Islamic countries, Vijay Mishra and Bob Hodge argue:For the Islamic postcolonial world, the moral is clear and succinct: to write in the language of the colonizer is to write from within death itself. Postcolonial writers who write in the language of the Empire are marked off as traitors to the cause of a reconstructive post-colonialism. Postcolonial writers compose under the shadow of death (Williams & Chrisman 1993:277).Apparently, the consequences triggered by the publication of Rushdie’s novel, in the preceding century, raised many significant questions about the relationship between East and West, colonized and colonizer. Nevertheless, the hostility toward the book in some Middle Eastern and Islamic countries is not related to the issue of language, identified by Mishra and Hodge as “the language of the empire.” The use of colonial languages rarely represents a threat to Islamic culture because unlike the literature of ex-colonies in Asia, Africa, South America, the West Indies and the Caribbean, dominantly written in the language of the western colonizers, literature in a large part of the Arab-Islamic world is composed in indigenous languages. It is important to point out therefore that the issue of language, raised above, is irrelevant because the campaign againstSatanic Versesis rooted in the radical constructs of religious hegemony integral to contemporary political Islamic doctrines.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of literary local lore for the work of future teachers of literature in extracurricular activities among students of secondary classes of educational institutions. The paper examines the stages of development of school literary local lore and proposes the concept of including local lore in literary education using a spatial approach to artistic works. The analysis of literature textbooks for the inclusion of local history texts was carried out, the content of the work on the study of works of art in the regional aspect was determined. Using the example of the story "Nikita's Childhood", the methods of studying the material are considered. Methodological recommendations for the study of literary local lore at school and methods of work in the classroom are presented. The study found supporting literature that helps to study the material in depth and consider it from different points of view. Excerpts of classes are presented to help traitors navigate the forms of classes aimed at studying materials with the writer's estate texts. In general, the study shows that further methodological improvement of the process of studying the personality and creativity of A.N.Tolstoy at school is possible with the use of traditions and new forms of organizing students' reading activities, as well as with increasing the philological competence of a teacher of literature.

Abstract:
The author’s goal to successfully impart a thought through fiction depends largely on the synergetic relationship between narrative techniques and other literary elements. This paper explores the synergic alliance between the authors’ choice of methods or literary devices to reveal the audience how characters and themes affecting them cannot be disconnected. The study hinges on a qualitative document analysis involving Ngugi’s novel A Grain of Wheat. Discussion was guided by three study questions concerning the place that narrative techniques hold among the fictional generic elements; the use of dramatic irony in A Grain of Wheat; and what can be learnt from that situation. Analysis revealed that dramatic irony is used in that novel to show the reader that people could be cautious to decide on heroes and traitors before the story conflict resolution. It was also confirmed that the interface between elements of literature cannot be doubted.

Abstract:
Western History and Literature have been perpetuating the image of women who have played an important role in the creation of the nation. According to those narratives, they emerge as figures that have helped European men to understand, connect and be part of native culture. Most importantly, they abandoned their own culture in order to build a more “civilized” nation in alliance with the Europeans and therefore they are seen as traitors. However, more recent studies tell us different stories about those women, stories that reveal that, in fact, these women were subjugated and/or discredited. From this perspective, this article aims at reflecting upon the oppressive patriarchal colonial forces that build the narrative of native people as the other. In that intent, we will analyze the poem “Pocahontas to Her English Husband, John Rolfe,” as well as the biography of Pocahontas, both written by Paula Gunn Allen, a native American writer, who gives voice to the silenced native woman and the tradition of her people.

Full text
Abstract:
The article places itself in the burgeoning literature on fraternization between POWs and local women during the twentieth century world wars. Though fraternization with the enemy was considered undesirable by all warring nations, incarcerating women for prolonged periods and suspending their citizenship for even longer was a hallmark of the Nazi system of (in)justice. War wives came in for harsher treatment as double traitors: to the nation and their soldier-husbands. The author has selected a few love triangles from a large cache of Gestapo reports; regional, local and ‘Special Court’ trials; and soldier-husbands’ clemency appeals for a qualitative analysis. Her interrogation of the archival sources from a people’s perspective goes into hitherto unexplored emotions, subjectivities and experiences of the affected people and demonstrates how they appropriated, negotiated, rejected and defied the penal code in their own ways through a display of willful conduct. The interiority of their experience is juxtaposed with the discourse analysis of honor and shame surrounding criminalized intimacies to expose the gap between wartime discourse and social practice.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to examine the link between power distance culture and whistleblowing intention or propensity in the African context. Design/methodology/approach The study achieves its aim by reviewing literature on power distance culture and whistleblowing, and it draws on the outcomes of relevant previous studies. It then reflects on some cultural practices in Africa in relation to the topic and uses examples from Ghana to exemplify the discussions. Findings It is considered unacceptable and disrespectful for subordinates to challenge or question their superior’s actions and decisions in high power distance societies. High power distance culture increases the perception of the negative consequences of whistleblowing, as whistle-blowers are regarded as traitors instead of civic heroes. These issues consequently provide major disincentives to subordinates engaging in whistleblowing, leading to low whistleblowing propensity in high power distance societies and implications for the increasing rate of corruption in Africa. Practical/implications The study findings imply that high power distance culture creates a “culture of silence”, which in turn provides fertile grounds for corporate crimes and unethical conducts. Authorities in high power distance societies should therefore institute adequate incentive schemes and shields to encourage and safeguard the safety of whistle-blowers. Originality/value In this era, where corporate scandals have become the order of the day and indeed a global canker, this study brings to the fore the destructive and limiting roles of culture, specifically power distance culture on the global war against unethical corporate practices and scandals.

Barnes, T. D. "Constantine and the Christians of Persia." Journal of Roman Studies 75 (November 1985): 126–36. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/300656.

Abstract:
The twenty-three Demonstrations of Aphrahat are not likely to be familiar to most students of Roman history or of Constantine. Aphrahat was head of the monastery of Mar Mattai, near modern Mosul, with the rank of bishop and, apparently, the episcopal name Jacob: as a consequence, he was soon confused with the better known Jacob of Nisibis, and independent knowledge of his life and career virtually disappeared. Fortunately, however, twenty-three treatises survived, whose attribution to ‘Aphrahat the Persian sage’ seems beyond doubt. Aphrahat wrote in Syriac and composed works of edification and polemic for a Mesopotamian audience outside the Roman Empire. Nevertheless, he provides crucial evidence not only for the attitude of Persian Christians towards Rome, but also for the military situation on Rome's eastern frontier at the end of the reign of Constantine. It is worth the effort, therefore, to set Aphrahat's fifth Demonstration, which bears the title ‘On wars’ or ‘On battles’, in its precise historical context. The present paper begins by considering the place of this Demonstration in Aphrahat's oeuvre and its exact date (I–III); it then argues that in 337 Constantine was preparing to invade Persia as the self-appointed liberator of the Christians of Persia (IV, VI), that Aphrahat expected him to be successful (V), and that Constantine's actions and the hopes which he excited caused the Persian king to regard his Christian subjects as potential traitors—and hence to embark on a policy of persecution (VII).

Abstract:
After the fall of the Northern Song [Formula: see text] (960–1127) capital of Kaifeng [Formula: see text] to Jurchen invaders in 1127, diasporic literati of the Southern Song dynasty [Formula: see text] (1127–1279) recreated and revisited its lost sites through textual commemoration, especially in memorabilia literature (biji [Formula: see text], lit. ‘brush notes’). As knowledge of the city passed from communicative memory into cultural memory, its decline and destruction became the focus of nostalgia and indignation for Yue Ke [Formula: see text] (1183–1234), the author of the Pillar Histories (Ting shi [Formula: see text]), a collection of counter-narratives of Northern Song history that expressed the shared experience of social trauma induced by dynastic collapse. Disconnected from their spatial context and even from historical fact, the city’s memory sites became stages for amoralistic declension narrative, in which the city’s destruction and occupation was assumed to have been instigated by the decadence of the imperial court of the passive Emperor Huizong [Formula: see text] (r. 1100–26) and his ‘nefarious ministers’. The most colourful elements of Yue’s ludic and fantastical narratives became the focus of his indignation, which encouraged his readers to denounce the traitors who had betrayed the empire by inviting the Jurchen invasion. In the Pillar Histories, Yue deployed textual imaginaries of nostalgia as forms of resistance by re-contesting the past events that led to dynastic collapse. By reconstructing the city in the cultural memory of his fellow diasporic literati, Yue was creating a vision of an ideal political, cultural and moral community that once existed at the dynasty’s inception, and might be reconstituted in the future, if and when Song subjects recaptured their lost homeland.

Abstract:
The article examines the role of the bear metaphor in the Spanish-language political discourse. The relevance of the study is due, firstly, to the intensification of cooperation between Russia and Latin American countries, the effectiveness of which can be influenced by stereotypes and political symbols. Secondly, the growing popularity of the use of zoomorphic metaphors by the mass media. One of the unofficial symbols of Russia, which is often addressed by both traditional media and social media, is the bear. The Russian Bear metaphor is now widely used in both Russian and foreign periodicals and cartoons. The purpose of this research is to identify the specifics of the representation of the image of Russia as a bear in the Ibero-American political mass-media discourse. The source for the analysis is a Spanish-language media discourse (cases: the 2014 Ukrainian crisis, the Venezuelan crisis, Russias military operation in Syria, Russias interference in the elections in Mexico). The scientific novelty of the study is that for the first time in the Russian-language scientific literature, the features of the use of the bear metaphor by Latin American media and social media are examined. The author concludes that the metaphor Russian Bear is used both in the internal political symbolic struggle and in the foreign policy discourse. The specifics of the use of the bear metaphor in Latin America are mainly determined by political orientations: for example, the left traditionally considers Russia as an ally, appealing to such meanings of the bear metaphor as strength, justice, and the ability to become a defender against aggressors. In turn, their opponents use a bear metaphor to label left-wing politicians as traitors to the national interest. In this context, the image of a Bear serves as a symbolic border guard. The bear metaphor can be used to create an image of an ally and defender, as well as an enemy. The Ibero-American media turn to the bear metaphor mainly in the headlines and subheadings of materials devoted to Russian foreign policy, which allows them to draw readers attention to the topic under consideration.

The author dedicates this article to the Day of United Action in memory of the genocide of the Soviet people by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War. It was appointed on April 19 – on the day of the publication in 1943 of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR no. 39 “On punishment measures for the Nazi villains guilty of killing and torturing the Soviet civilian population and captured Red Army soldiers, for spies, traitors to the motherland from among Soviet citizens and for their accomplices”. The author analyzes the content and grounds for the application of this decree, provides data on the trials in which its provisions were applied and considers the assessments of this act expressed in special literature. Nowadays thе decree played an important historical role in forming the evidence base for recognizing the crimes committed by the Nazi villains and their accomplices as genocide of national and ethnic groups that represented the population of the USSR, the nations of the Soviet Union. It was part of the plan, which consisted in the intentions of Nazi Germany to expulsion and extermination of the local population of the occupied territories of the Soviet Union in order to colonize the “liberated” territory by the Germans.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to reconstruct the phenomenon of the relationship between the formation of philosophy in Russia and the formation of conceptual tools of philosophical thought. We are not talking about the mechanical transfer of the products of European thought to the Russian soil, but about the problem of the transformation of cultural space, which are described by means of historiography and the history of philosophy. The researcher relies in this case on the knowledge gained during the study of texts belonging to the famous poet and translator of the XVIII century – V. K. Trediakovsky. The methodological basis of the study includes elements of the historical-genetic method and comparative analysis. The author sets the task to characterize the relationship between such analytical trends as an attempt to reconstruct the language of philosophy of the era of Elizabeth Petrovna and the translation of French scientific literature, as well as changing the semantic contexts of the existence of various terms. The result of the study is a description of several aspects of the problem of word usage. The first of them was the insufficiency of lexical means of Russian literary speech. The second is the desire of the eighteenth-century cultural traitors to transform the means of expression of the products of philosophical reflection. The third is the presence of prerequisites for rethinking the process of formation of philosophical terminology in Russia throughout the century.

Abstract:
The article states that today in Ukraine the problem of criminal legal counteraction to collaborationism has finally received a proper legislative solution. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has tried seven times to solve this problem in the relevant draft laws of Ukraine. And only the beginning of the open large-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine prompted the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to implement one of these options to criminalize collaboration activities. The article considers Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which on March 3, 2022 was provided by the Law of Ukraine «On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts (on the Establishment of Criminal Liability for Collaborative Activities)». Based on the analysis of scientific literature and bills, certain conclusions were made about the construction peculiarities of the relevant components of collaboration activities. In particular, it was found that the vagueness of certain features of the relevant components of the criminal offense is contrary to the principle of legal certainty and requires further scientific research. Some forms of collaborationism need to be clarified or excluded. Such forms of committing a criminal offense primarily duplicate forms of treason. Such a form as «... actions of Ukrainian citizens aimed at implementing the educational standards of the aggressor state in such educational institutions» can be widely interpreted in judicial practice. It will lead either to selective justice or to the non-application of this form at all. It is stated that such ill-considered criminalization creates conditions for the rejection of the state by citizens who find themselves in difficult conditions in the occupied territories. Due to some similarities between treason and collaboration, the article identifies the possibility of avoiding traitors from severe punishment, as the punishment for most forms of collaborationism is milder than the punishment for treason. It is proposed to provide in the new part of Article 9. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine incentive rule similar to Part 3 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This is justified by the fact that the traitor can be released from criminal liability, and a less serious offense – collaborationism does not give the perpetrator such an opportunity. The authors of the article propose: to change the title of Section 1 of the Special Part of the Criminal Code of Ukraine to «Criminal Offenses Against the Foundations of National Security» and to provide in the sanctions of Parts 1 and 2 of Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine alternative main punishment; to determine a citizen of Ukraine as a subject in all components of criminal offenses provided for in parts 1–7 of Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine; to delete the reference to «voluntary cooperation» in parts 2, 5, 7 of Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine; such forms of collaboration activities, which are provided for in part four of Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, to clarify by describing the specific consequences for national security. It is stated that the criminalization of collaborationism requires a comprehensive and systematic approach. First, a transitional justice strategy (concept) needs to be approved, which should, in particular, balance amnesty and prosecution of perpetrators. Secondly, the political component of the implementation of these legislative changes should be envisaged, as it does not exactly contribute to the peaceful settlement of the existing Russian-Ukrainian war.

Abstract:
After more than a century of research at the university, personality traits have been fully studied and measured, thanks to the work of many researchers. The Big Five is one of the most popular personality tests. It was created using an ethical approach, which says that personality traits should be measured in the same way in all cultures. But as the effects of different cultures grow and researchers learn more, ethical approaches to measuring personality are increasingly questioned. In anthropological research, emic approaches emphasizing the importance of specific cultural methods have been studied. This method is used to create the Big Six and Big Seven scales below. These measurements have been tested and found to be more accurate and valid for measuring personality traits in the right group of people. So, this study is intended to provide a literature review that summarizes how personality traits are defined, the specific content and development of such measurements using ethical and emic approaches, measurement problems based on relevant research, and several other things to think about. About when assessing personality traits using an etic and EMIC approach.

The impact of traits in entrepreneurship has been subject to intense discussion. Apart from favorable traits fostering opportunity recognition, entrepreneurial orientation, venture performance, and other variables, a younger research stream also addresses the role of negative traits. Among them, the dark triad, comprising of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, have gained specific attention. This systematic literature review aims to structure the field, identify current research themes, and provide a better understanding of prior research outcomes. Our results show that dark triad research addresses entrepreneurial activity, opportunity recognition, entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial leadership, the and entrepreneurial motives. Among the dark triad traits, narcissism is stressed most in research so far. It relates to firm performance, risk, and leadership behavior, whereas Machiavellianism and psychopathy relate to opportunity recognition and exploitation. We also identify several research gaps, which can be addressed in future research.

Twenty-one broadly defined keys to success are identified in the literature and then organized in terms of process design traits, participant traits, and contextual traits. The most frequently cited factors in each category are, respectively, effective facilitation, active participation by agency staff, and support from agencywide policies and administrators. Summarized findings suggest several attributes the agency can look for when selecting individuals to facilitate collaborative planning processes involving multiple stakeholders.

Abstract:
Ecological traits have flourished in insect-based studies, resulting in a substantial and growing list of measurable traits. One trait that will likely become more attractive as data quality and curation improve is the diel patterns of insect activities. Diel patterns in ants can help better understand vital ecological processes such as competition and invasion biology. Because diel activity has the potential to be an informative trait in ants, we assessed the diel designations of foraging ants across the literature to quantify and assess the variation and sampling extent of this particular trait. We collected diel designations from 104 peer-reviewed scientific articles and quantified these data across important and documented ecological traits. We found that a disproportionate amount of solitary foraging ants were primarily diurnal foragers relative to ants that cooperatively forage. Our data show that diel patterns in foraging vary widely within and across ant genera. Importantly, we highlight the undersampling of this crucial ecological trait, which currently limits its utility. Our efforts highlight the importance of assessing an ecologically important trait’s landscape of reported data.

Abstract:
Purpose The project management literature provides a fairly united picture of the importance of projects being successful. One success factor is represented by project managers themselves, whose personality, skills, knowledge, competencies, and traits affect project success. To better understand various project manager types, the purpose of this paper is to review the extant project management literature and propose a framework for categorising project managers based on the traits that they possess or lack. Design/methodology/approach The research commenced with identifying and collecting articles from the academic project management literature. The articles were then coded to identify different competencies and traits that a project manager needs to be successful. Based on this analysis, a framework with four main project manager types was developed. Findings The results indicate that ambiguity acceptance and translation skills are two important dimensions that project managers need to be successful. The four project manager types were arranged around two dimensions. Research limitations/implications The framework presented is based on previous research. Empirical testing of the proposed framework would be a promising direction for future research. Practical implications The framework assists reflective practitioners in identifying what kind of project manager they currently are, suggesting how they might transition into a different project manager type to increase their project management success rate. Originality/value This paper conceptualises project managers and how their personal traits relate to project success. It offers practical help to project managers in understanding their strengths and limitations, and how to become a different type of project manager.

Abstract:
We do not trust technologies like we trust people, rather we rely on them. This article argues for an emphasis on reliance rather than trust as a concept for understanding human relationships with technology. Reliance is important because researchers can empirically measure the reliability of a given technology. We first explore two frameworks of trust and reliance. We then examine how reliance can be measured by conducting systematic literature reviews of reported success metrics for given technologies. Specifically, we examine papers which present models for predicting private traits from social media data. Of the 72 models for predicting private traits that were surveyed from 31 papers, 80% of the methods reported success rates lower than 90%, indicating a general unreliability in predicting private traits. We illustrate the current applicability of this method throughout the article by discussing the Cambridge Analytica scandal that began during the 2016 US Presidential election.

Abstract:
Moral is what guides human to act humanly. That is why moral education should be taught as early as possible in order to make a society that upholds moral values. This paper focused on moral values of the Japanese that can be seen in Miyazaki’s anime entitled Spirited Away. The moral values discussed in this paper are based on Japanese moral education for elementary school level, which divided into four groups of desirable habits. They are matters belonging to oneself, relationship of self to other persons, matters related chiefly to nature and sublime things, and matters concerning the group and society. The determination of this level is due to the behavior of the main character named Chihiro who was an elementary school student, which is used as a guide to discussing moral values consisted in the anime. The conclusion is that the Japanese government has succeeded in giving moral education in elementary school, at least in this anime. Chihiro's actions are proof that she acts and reacts as what she taught in Japanese elementary school. She did exactly the same with recommended traits in the four groups of desirable habits, although she sometimes broke the rules which was natural for human being, especially for kids. Therefore, we can say that well-structured Japanese moral education can be used in much wider place; not only in Japan but also in other countries.
