Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the investigation of nanomechanical behavior of new types of metal alloys protective coatings. For this purpose, poly(n-butylacrylate) was synthesized via activators regenerated by electron transfer-atom transfer radical polymerization and mixed with epoxy resins, and microcomposites. Design/methodology/approach Multi-layered coatings were applied on hot dip galvanized steel via a baker film applicator. Every layer containing the aforementioned copolymer differs in the proportion of the epoxy resin resulting in the production of a coating with a gradient from hard to soft from the substrate to the top. Nanomechanical performance is accessed via nanoindentation, providing information for structural and mechanical integrity, adhesion and resistance to wear. Findings The results reveal that through trajection of hardness mapping, the resistance is divided in three regions, namely, the polymer (matrix), interface (region close to/between spheres-shells) and spheres-shell regions. Originality/value The structural analysis, adhesion and mechanical integrity of the coatings are clearly demonstrated.

Abstract:
The fully quantized model of double qubits coupled to a common bath is solved using the quantum state diffusion (QSD) approach in the non-Markovian regime. We have established the explicit time-local non-Markovian QSD equations for the two-qubit dissipative and dephasing models. Diffusive quantum trajectories are applied to the entanglement estimation of two-qubit systems in a non-Markovian regime. In both cases, non-Markovian features of entanglement evolution are revealed through quantum diffusive unravellings in the system state space.

Abstract:
AbstractDewell (1994), following Brugman (1981) and Lakoff (1987), provides a semantic analysis ofoverby relying more exclusively on image-schema transformations than did Brugman and Lakoff. The Brugman-Lakoff-Dewell analysis, however, can be improved by using simpler image-schemas, more natural image-schema transformations, and metaphorical extensions. A key idea adopted in the present article is to capture both trajectors and landmarks three-dimensionally and topologically. This modification brings about the elimination of unessential features such as the shape and size of the trajector and the landmark, contact/non-contact between the trajector and the landmark, and physical properties of the trajector. Its main advantage is that a central image-schema for a semicircular path provides the basis for explaining all of the senses ofoverusing natural image-schema transformations and metaphorical extensions. The proposed image-schema transformations include: segment profiling, profiling the endpoint of access paths, the profiled peak position of the semicircular path with the constraint that the rest of the semicircular path is excluded, and the extension of the semicircular path-trajectory to an image of covering. The proposed metaphorical senses aretime, means, andcontrol. In addition, the radial category relating each sense ofoveris presented.

This article is devoted to the uses of different Italian prepositions in expressionsdescribing the same fragment of reality, as exemplified by: una ragazza dai capellirossi and con una ragazza (i) capelli rossi, both referring to a red-haired girl. Situatingthe research in the field of Cognitive Grammar by R. Langacker (the relation betweena trajector and a landmark) and based on the conception of pre-cognitive schema, thefollowing hypotheses were verified: 1. preposition, as a relational category, reconstructsin a sentence the relation between the trajector and the landmark; 2. preposition, asa localistic category, illustrates the spatial and/or temporal mutual distribution of thetrajector and the landmark; 3. the ordering of the trajector and the landmark doesnot necessarily reflect the order of perceived elements: the element expressed aftera preposition can be a starting point to the perception of a scene; 4. differences inthe choice of prepositions express different ways to conceptualize the same fragmentof reality; 5. prototypical uses of prepositions refer to relational schemas and localisticpre-conceptual schema; 6.there exist asemantic uses of prepositions, as indicatedby language users’ preferences; 7. each preposition has its own semantic invariant.

Abstract:
The article deals with new approaches to the study of the communicative perspective of a sentence using profiling or focusing operations. Profiling some of the most communicatively significant blocks leads to the highlighting information included into the main clause – the trajectory, and dependent clauses, as mobile figures, are landmarks, moving up and down rendering information about the trajector. Тrajector and landmark as elements of conceptualized event are placed in the speaker’s focus of attention, but they possess unequal focal prominence. Focusing involves choosing the content that should be marked, as well as the organization of this content by placing its components in the foreground and background, which corresponds to the well-known in psychology the concepts of “background” and “figure or foreground”. Trajector as a mobile element of the scene constitutes the primary focus. Landmark which serves as the point of reference for trajector is usually placed in the secondary focus. The trajector/landmark assymetry is fundamental to building a Compositiona path of a Complex sentence. The result of focusing is the thema-rhematic division of information represented by units of discourse. In addition, focusing is tracked in unit values. Its distinctive feature is the formation of complex structures from simpler ones. In the language of the structures of lower levels, which are included in the structure of higher levels, collectively form a “symbolic assembly” , which may have varying degrees of complexity. In general, it is the conceptual framework and profile that are important for understanding the communicative orientation of the Complex sentence itself. The conceptual framework is the entire amount of information contained in a sentence. The profile is the part of the database that, when highlighted, forms a new meaning of the whole syntactic unit.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, we present a formalism for handling polysemy in spatial expressions based on supervaluation semantics called standpoint semantics for polysemy (SSP). The goal of this formalism is, given a prepositional phrase, to define its possible spatial interpretations. For this, we propose to characterize spatial prepositions by means of a triplet $\langle $image schema, semantic feature, spatial axis$\rangle $. The core of SSP is predicate grounding theories, which are formulas of a first-order language that define a spatial preposition through the semantic features of its trajector and landmark. Precisifications are also established, which are a set of formulae of a qualitative spatial reasoning formalism that aims to provide the spatial characterization of the trajector with respect to the landmark. In addition to the theoretical model, we also present results of a computational implementation of SSP for the preposition ‘in’.

Abstract:
The major goal of Rousseau’s Discours sur L’Origine et les Fondements de L’Inégalité Parmi les Hommes is the distinction between primary and secondary qualities of human nature, the former being the most representative of the human species and the latter those that cause variations between individuals. Having this distinction as a basic tool, Rousseau searches, in his political works, for a foundation of a social condition in conformity to those essential qualities. Therefore, it’s important to understand how human beings can keep under control the less beneficial characteristics of their nature, that is, the ones that may lead to endless conflicts when stimulated. Having in mind that the community is founded by a permanent exercise of giving priority to the essential qualities of human nature over the secondary ones, we shall also understand whether Rousseau’s community is meant to have an organizational structure, distinct from the existence of particular human beings.

Abstract:
This paper presents an analysis of the semantic fi eld of falling in Russian Sign Language (RSL). In this domain, RSL makes use of a particular group of signs usually referred to as ‘classifi er predicates’ [Zwitserlood 2012]. These signs are highly iconic and do not have correlates in spoken languages. Separate structural components of classifi er predicates, i.e. the handshape, the hand orientation, the trajectory and the direction of movement etc., describe diff erent aspects of falling. For example, the handshape determines the type of the trajector, and the direction of movement indicates the start versus end-point locations of the trajector. While some of these aspects are typically marked in both sign and spoken languages, others are unique for the languages of the visual modality. The paper gives a detailed description of the internal structure of the classifier predicates occurring in this semantic fi eld and discusses the implications these data provide for the theory of lexical typology. In particular, we explain the differences in lexicalization strategies between RSL and the spoken languages by two conceptualization modes RSL uses in this domain, i.e. the cognitive and the (purely) visual conceptualization. While the former is guided by cognitive processes and, therefore, is shared by sign and spoken languages, the latter is unique for the languages of the visual modality; it is responsible for the aspects of lexicalization based exclusively on the visual characteristics of the object/situation.

Abstract:
Euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon. A short introduction to euphemism in English and Chinese will benefit our future intercultural communication. Three grammatical approaches in English euphemism were analyzed in light of cognitive grammar: negation, postmodification and aspect. Thanks to negation, profile and base are changed, resulting in the prominence of “NOT” and the shift of cognitive reference point. Postmodification makes the head noun the trajector in a relational profile, hence reducing the prominence of the modifier. Aspects help to turn a bounded scene into an unbounded one and hence change the cognitive focus. These will be benefit for human’s communication.

Abstract:
This paper presents a new adaptive controller as a solution to the problem of stabilizing nonholonomic mechanical systems in the presence of incomplete information concerning the system dynamic model. The proposed control system consists of two su bsystems: a slightly modified version of the kinematic stabilization strategy of M'Closkey and Murray which generates a desired velocity trajectory for the nonholonomic system, and an adaptive control scheme which ensures that this velocity trajector y is accurately tracked. This approach is shown to provide arbitrarily accurate stabilization to any desired configuration and can be implemented with no knowledge of the system dynamic model. The efficacy of the proposed stabilization strategy is illustr ated through extensive computer simulations with nonholonomic mechanical systems arising from explicit constraints on the system kinematics and from symmetries of the system dynamics.

Abstract:
This article argues that OVER profiles the relation between a schematic path and a LM — even when it describes an objectively static scene. It situates OVER within the overall system of spatial prepositions in English, focusing primarily on the general semantic patterns that over shares with other route Ps (THROUGH, AROUND, ACROSS, …), i.e., prepositions that profile a path defined by its internal structure and location rather than by its endpoints. OVER thus contrasts systematically with locational Ps (IN, ON, ABOVE, IN FRONT OF, …) that profile the ordinary location of a trajector. These systematic contrasts consistently account for the differences between OVER and its paradigmatic alternatives. The analysis suggests adopting a more dynamic conception of a “semantic network” that consists mainly of interpretational processes that are shared with other expressions in the system.

Abstract:
This paper presents a cognitive analysis of the Arabic preposition khilāl “through” on the basis of Tyler & Evans’ (2001, 2003) model of Principled Polysemy. The study includes developing a semantic or polysemous network of khilāl through applying the criteria of this model, identifying its primary sense and distinct senses. The study also includes a contrastive analysis of the semantic networks of khilāl and the equivalent English preposition through in terms of their proto-scenes and the distinct senses associated with each. Analyses showed that both khilāl and through share the same proto-scene of a Trajector Traversing a bounded Landmark. Moreover, khilāl seems to have very limited uses comparing to through and this, as I assume, might be due to its restricted use in Modern Standard Arabic, decreasing as a result its pragmatic strengthening possibilities.

Abstract:
From and to differ from other prepositions of movement in two significant respects: they entail point-apprehensibility and leave the actual trajector-landmark arrangement unspecified. The difference is due to the presence of two place-functions in their conceptual structure. The first place-function is the same as the one found in the conceptual structure of at. It triggers a point-like conceptualization and is lexicalized together with the path-function. The second place-function is not specified but can be lexicalized separately. The conceptual structure with two place-functions allows for a second preposition, but can at the same time account for the unacceptability of from at and to at. The paper highlights the vagueness of the traditional definitions of from and to, arguing that what is conceptualized as a point is not the landmark but the place of location.

Abstract:
Spatial relation is a basic existent relation in the objective world, and in English, prepositions are the important spatial terms to describe spatial relations people perceive. Using Langacker’s trajector-landmark theory from cognitive grammar, this paper attempts to analyze the cognitive process of the six main spatial meaning of English preposition across based on the entries collected by the Collins Dictionary, with data from the the Leeds Collection of Internet Corpora. The findings can be concluded: (1) The use of across should include at least a tr and a lm, and the lm cannot be covert. (2) The spatial relations across contains could be divided into simple atemporal relation and complex atemporal relation. (3) The tr in some dynamic relation of across sometimes will represent some kind of schema, such as source-path-goal schema.

Abstract:
The traditional approach to verb prefixes is to consider them as bound morphemes without a real emphasis and analysis of their cognitive meaning. In this paper we use the concept schematic meaning which gathers verbs with different meaning while they share the same prefix. In our case, the Albanian bashke-prefix was chosen and its allomorph bashka-. In order to appreciate the schematic meaning concept and its application in the Albanian case, we considered the schematic meaning as the super-schema of bashke-prefix (co-prefix). This super-schema characterizes the metaphorical reading of the same prefix with different meaning which plays an important role in the semantics of abstract notions. This cognitive model helps to build a rather clear image of how the trajector and landmark inter-act as the basic units of spatial relations; the schematic brings about diverse meaning in a strict spatial frame-work.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present, after a short introduction to what pragmateme, or pragmatic phraseologism, is and how we understand it as a fixed expressive phrase with affective and emotive load, the results of the Polonium project entitled “Pragmatemes in contrast: from linguistic modeling to lexicographic coding”. In particular, we want to divulgate information concerning analysis of the French pragmateme Ça roule ! and its Italian corresponding phrase A posto!. Furthermore, equivalents of both pragmatemes are also investigated. However, as we consider cognitive linguistics tools as those which may give greater response to what the meaning of pragmatemes is, we broaden the project results with analysis of the trajector-landmark relation and of conceptual metaphors, that are the basis of the imagery for the aforementioned linguistic elements. In this way, we may also try to discern similarities and discrepancies in how close but still different cultures depict the same scene in similar speech events.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper proposes a structural borrowing account for a lexicogrammatical phenomenon whereby, in on ongoing Cantonese discourse, the use of a single-word English preposition triggers and activates an English construction, specifically an NP COP P NP sequence, and brings it into that discourse. The borrowed structure eventually converges with Cantonese, with the English preposition reanalyzed as a verb or a coverb. It is further suggested that these processes of structural borrowing and convergence are semantically motivated. Drawing on Cognitive Grammar, the borrowed structure np cop p np profiles a location as a relationship (whereas in Cantonese it is profiled as a thing by a postposition), and the pp (i.e., p np ) is profiled as a property of the subject or trajector (whereas in Cantonese a coverb phrase is always associated with a process). The converged constructions – in which an English preposition is reanalyzed as a verb or coverb – profile more dynamic and specific processes.

Abstract:
The paper describes the application of the optimization method of fuzzy automatic classification in the problem of combining estimates of trajectory measurements in a radar system. By a radiolocation system the author mean an automated hierarchical technical complex that combines, using communication tools, a set of asynchronously functioning radiolocation tools, as well as central and intermediate points that collect, process and issue trajectory radiolocation information. It must be borne in mind that in conditions of tracking tight groups of air targets, with relatively small intervals and distances, it is not always possible to obtain trajectory information of the required quality. The main reason for this is the difficulty in determining the values of the correlation matrices of errors in estimating the parameters of the state vector of air targets. The task becomes more complicated as the number of intermediate processing points increases when it is brought to the final consumer. The main goal of the article is to increase the accuracy of estimates of trajectory measurements in a radiolocation system. The research is done by means of the mathematical tool of fuzz-set theory, namely, by optimizing fuzzy automatic classification. The article demonstrates that using fuzzy automatic classification under a priori parametrical uncertainty in the law of trajectory measurement errors, when determining weight coefficients, can improve the accuracy of estimates in these conditions up to 30 % compared with methods based on the application of the probabilistic approach. The results obtained allow us to justify the prospects of using optimization methods of fuzzy automatic classification in the tasks of processing trajectory information. In addition, the advantage of the proposed method is its low computational complexity and ease of implementation, which is especially important while maintaining a large number of airborne objects.
