Abstract:
This paper presents an investigation into the dynamic behavior of an embedded rail track coupled with a tram vehicle in time domain. A new designed embedded rail track structure firstly introduced into the Chinese tramways is described and the results of vibration tests of the embedded rail track (ERT) and another fastened slab track (FST) are discussed. A three-dimensional (3D) dynamic model of a tram vehicle coupled with an embedded rail track was developed on the basis of the multi-body dynamics approach and the finite element method. In the model, the tram vehicle was modeled as a multi-body system. The embedded rail track was modeled as a two layer system consisting of two rails, filling material, slabs, and adjustment layer beneath slabs. The rails were treated as Timoshenko beams with continuous elastic supports, in which the modal superposition method was used to reduce the order of the partial differential equations of beams. Continuous viscoelastic elements were used to represent the filling material and rail pad that connecting the rails and the slabs. The concrete slabs were modelled using the 3D finite element method, while the modal superposition method was adopted to improve the computational efficiency. Uniformly viscoelastic elements were introduced to model the elastic layer beneath the concrete slabs. The proposed model was then applied to compare the dynamic response of the innovative embedded rail track with respect to a conventional fastened slab track. The numerical results indicate that the innovative embedded rail track has advantages over the fastened slab track for its potentialities to reduce the dynamic wheel/rail force, the vibration level and deformation of the track parts, and the track defects and damages.

Abstract:
During investigation of road-traffic accidents with tramways participation, investigative bodies are interested in the causes which, from the technical point of view, could lead to coming-off of a tram from rails. In the paper the case in which two drivers of separate tram cars took part, is considered. Circumstances of road traffic accident consist in the following. During transit of the first tram through automated turnout in the moment when the first bogie of the first tram has already proceeded the switch, and the second has not yet, there was shift of a point rail, that is, there was a shift of rail for the movement in other direction. As a result of it the first bogie of the first tram has continued movement in the same direction, and the second bogi has started to move in another direction. In other words there has occurred turnout incut. In order to check operation of a turnout, various modes of its operation were simulated. Also experimental transits of tram cars were carried out. The obtained data has allowed to draw up a conclusion that the cause of the first tram coming-off from rails was a technical malfunction switch and coincidence of certain circumstances. That is, on the one hand, automatic moving ofpoint switch occurred only for tram movement to the left. On the other hand, the reason of the first tram descent from a railway was that the driver of the second tram has passed entrance harp during the moment when the first tram still was in a pass stage of switch. In article the algorithm of the specialist actions in a similar situation during carrying out of investigatory experiment is resulted and the list of questions solved at carrying out of switch researches, which works in an automatic mode at the moment of traffic accident occurrence is stated.

Abstract:
The paper discusses measures to reduce the negative effects of tram traffic on residential house in Ostrava, where the tram line passes through the street area located under the structure of the house see Figure 1.Fig.1HouseNo.1340inOstravaaffectedbyvibrationsfromrailtransportThe lines of urban railways are often kept at densely built-up areas, often in close proximity to the buildings. It is necessary to put a high emphasis on protection against noise and vibration. In case of structures for residential buildings it has a negative effect on residents. An efficient way to reduce the vibration levels of the protected structure and thus the secondary noise is elastic foundation structure as a whole to its support structure. But in practice, we need to solve the problem of the ex post, i.e. when the structure of a residential building already exists. To reduce the transmission of vibrations to the structure was carried out technical measures for vibration attenuation along the route of the spread it is the path from the source to the protected structure. Railway track was imposed on rubber anti-vibration mats under gravel bed of tram line. Furthermore, the test sections were established in order to test the application of different materials used as a grout space between the rails and the surrounding environment and the reference section to compare the resulting data.Subsequently was held the measurement of noise and vibration. Vibrations were measured on the own construction of the house, also on the communication - vertical vibration near the track (30 cm far from the running rail track), these data present the transmission of vibration from the rail and sleepers in the immediate surroundings, measuring the vertical vibrations of the road (150 cm far from the running rail track in place that was not affected by reconstruction), these data present the transmission of vibration to the subsoil neighborhood.

Abstract:
In urban railway environments, the problem of tramcars passing small radius arches appears to be topical. In this regard, the authors proposed that the wheelsets should be complemented on the outer side of the wheels with a second tread of a lower radius, intended exclusively for ride in arches of the track with a radius which the conventional wheelsets cannot even theoretically pass without creep. The complemented wheel tread enters into operation (or out of action) as a result of passing over a specially shaped rail located in the intersections before and behind the small radius arc. In this process, there is a change in the wheel-rail contact location similar to what is commonly used when riding on a facing rail located in the immediate vicinity of the point frog. The paper deals with the comparison of these two cases based on a simulation analysis of vehicle ride. It can be evaluated, that changing the contact point when entering the arc by means of the proposed rails takes place in a more favourable way. It is possible to assume nearly 4 times longer service life of the proposed shaped rail than the one of a frog point.

Abstract:
In the article the author describes the main tendencies of the development of the system of communication routes of Northern Bukovyna and Khotyn region in 1918 – 1940. In the interwar period, in addition to the improvement of traditional modes of transport, new ones were launched. A major impediment to the improvement of transport infrastructure was the devastation during the World War I. During 1918 – 1940 the damaged sections of rails, bridges and stations had to be rebuilt. Similar were the problems with highways, the condition of which was one of the worst in Romania. The progressive shifts should include the establishment of a permanent domestic and international air connection between Northern Bukovyna and Khotyn. Urban public transport has also undergone qualitative changes in the interwar period. There were regular bus routes between the main settlements of the region. Abstract:
The Swedish city of Uppsala is growing and will be expanded. To manage the increase in traffic, a tramway is being planned. It is vital to make the construction and the tramway tracks sustainable. This is explored to study carbon dioxide emissions related to tramway track materials as well as their wear and service life. This project investigates sustainability, the tramway track constituents, rail steel, the rails' wear, rail surface treatments that could minimize wear and increase service life, materials surrounding the rails, and the production of the most used materials in tramway tracks. A literature study is conducted to compare different options for materials and treatments. The municipality of Uppsala's climate goals, technical standards and regulations, articles and studies about the mentioned topics, amongst other sources, are considered and compared. The results include a rough estimation of the material consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Asphalt tracks have the lowest emissions of the different surrounding material options. The steel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions for the vignole rails are less than for grooved rails and the concrete consumption for grass tracks is slightly less compared to edilon tracks. It is also possible to switch from regular perlitic rail steel to bainitic rail steel when needed. Laser hardening, UNSM, and thermal plasma hardening decrease the rails' wear (rates) considering increased surface hardness.

A 2.5D ray-tracing propagation model is proposed to predict radio loss in indoor environment. Specifically, we opted for the Shooting and Bouncing Rays (SBR) method, together with the Geometrieal Theory of Diffrartion (GTD). Besides the line-of-sight propagation (LOS), we consider that the radio waves may experience reflection, refraction, and diffraction (NLOS). In the Shooting and Bouncing Rays (SBR) method, the transmitter antenna launches a bundle of rays that may or may not reach the receiver. Considering the transmitting antenna as a point, the rays will start to launch from this position and can reach the receiver either directly or after reflections, refractions, diffractions, or even after any combination of the previous effects. To model the environment, a database is built to record geometrical characteristics and information on the constituent materials of the scenario. The database works independently of the simulation program, allowing robustness and flexibility to model other seenarios. Each propagation mechanism is treated separately. In line-of-sight propagation, the main contribution to the received signal comes from the direct ray, while reflected, refracted, and diffracted signal dominate when the line-of-sight is blocked. For this case, the transmitted signal reaches the receiver through more than one path, resulting in a multipath fading. The transmitting channel of a mobile system is simulated by moving either the transmitter or the receiver around the environment. The validity of the method is verified through simulations and measurements. The computed path losses are compared with the measured values at 1.8 GHz ftequency. The results were obtained for the main corridor and room classes adjacent to it. A reasonable agreement is observed. The numerical predictions are also compared with published data at 900 MHz and 2.44 GHz frequencies showing good convergence

Abstract: In a scene of strong social inequalities, Brazil has in its population groups below the poverty line, on one hand, and classes with individual incomes above the average per capita in developed countries, on the other. The barriers imposed by social inequality can be reduced by a public transport policy that promotes the mobility of people and their accessibility to places of interest. The mobility and access to daily transportation needs are essential to the realization of most economic and social activities of the population. Given this, this study analyzes the mobility of low-income population in the region southeast of Teresina, user's urban train taking into account, the public transportation as a major contributing factor of economic, social and environmental impact of cities

All of this in years in which critical and operational attention to the present was uncommon, the discipline of design was still to be founded, the involvement of an architect with rolling stock companies was out of the ordinary. The text aims to piece together his figure mirrored with his city and the national context, thanks to the contribution of those who had him as an interlocutor and the scholars who worked on the beaten track of his research. The goal is not limited to render the complex of a culturally incisive personality, but to highlight areas still to be explored for current scholars, those "phosphorescent trails" that he left us as a legacy.

Abstract:
The increase in number of passengers and tramcars will wear down existing rail structures faster. This is forcing the rail infrastructure asset owners to incorporate asset management strategies to reduce total operating cost of maintenance whilst improving safety and performance. Analysing track geometry defects is critical to plan a proactive maintenance strategy in short and long term. Repairing and maintaining the correctly selected tram tracks can effectively reduce the cost of maintenance operations. The main contribution of this chapter is to explore the factors influencing the degradation of tram tracks (light rail tracks) using existing geometric data, inspection data, load data and repair data. This chapter also presents an Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) model to predict the degradation of tram tracks. Predicting the degradation of tram tracks will assist in understanding the maintenance needs of tram system and reduce the operating costs of the system.

Abstract:
Early childhood embodied a pleasant mix of sand and sea - and ships. Home was the curiously named Borwick Rails, facing south across the beautiful Duddon Estuary in the extreme south of Cumberland. The house, which was a prominent sea-mark for ships, was situated only a few hundred yards from a wharf or quay, connected by a railway to an ironworks nearby with six blast furnaces. Behind the house was the Victorian town of Millom, created in mid-century as the result of the discovery of a large ore body of extremely high quality. Once mining had begun at Hodbarrow, an ironworks soon followed, and settlement at Millom grew rapidly, drawing workers from Cornwall and North Wales as well as from rural Cumberland....

Abstract:
The term menu du jour (French) or menu del dia (Spanish) is sometimes used instead of the term table d’hôte menu. Another menu term used is carte du jour (literally ‘card of the day’), or ‘menu of the day’, which can also be a fixed meal with one or more courses for a set price. A prix fixe (fixed price) menu is similar. A ‘tasting menu’ (menu degustation) is a set meal with a range of courses (often between six and ten). These tasting menus are offered in restaurants where the chef provides a sample of the range of dishes available on the main menu. These tasting menus can also be offered with a flight (selection) of wines – a different wine for each course., with the chef coming to the customer’s table to explain the production of the dish. For all menus the price of the meal might also include wine or other drinks. In addition to menus for main meals, such as luncheon or dinner, there are also requirements for other types of menu such as all day menus, floor/room service menus, lounge service menus, hospital tray service menus, airline tray service menus and rail service menus and event menus.

Abstract:
Political institutions, their visions, and policies have influenced urban transport policies in New Zealand. The aim of this chapter is to provide a historical overview of urban transport policies in Auckland, New Zealand to investigate the nature of institutional barriers and opportunities for change. This chapter uses path dependence and development as a theoretical framework providing a structured approach with which to explain the nature of transport planning and policies in Auckland. The research finds that events such as replacement of trams with buses and policy directions such as selection of motorway projects over the rapid rail in the mid-1950s to mid-1960s locked Auckland’s transport policies into a road-based paradigm. However, this road-based transport policy paradigm has been challenged since the early 2000s, with subsequent events, policies and institutional restructuring all shaping a new critical juncture in favour of sustainable transport. In spite of this emerging critical juncture, transport policies to deliver greater sustainable transport outcomes have largely been placed on hold due to resistance from path-dependent transport policies that promote investment in motorways. The more convincing institutional change will occur if local political leadership generate constructive debate in resisting carbon-intensive policies, develop a clear plan for the low carbon mobility future, get public transport funding autonomy and national level policy guidelines to integrate land use and transport.

Abstract:
This article will propose different energy storage systems, ranging from 0.91 kWh to 1.56 kWh, suitable for a 30 m long tram. To configure the system regarding energy content, voltage variation, maximum current and power losses, a model of the tram, network and substations power flow has been developed in a Matlab/Simulink environment. Results obtained in energy savings at substation level vary from 24% to 27, 6% under the same driving profile and auxiliaries load; while at the end-of-life of supercapacitors, the range varies from 18, 1% to 25, 1% depending on the supercapacitor module used and vehicle load.

Abstract:
One of the new forms of suburban rail services is the joint operation of light and conventional rail equipment on existing rail infrastructure. Beginning with the conversion of the light rail system in Karlsruhe, Germany, several cities in Europe and United States have found the advantage of using light rail vehicles to extend rail service from city center to suburbia via existing conventional railroad irresistible. This seamless mode of transportation offers the most attractive and cost-effective rail system to move a large number of people through the metropolitan area. Using the lessons learned from Europe and America, this paper describes the technical issues involved and its benefits for adoption by transportation planners of this emerging trend.

Abstract:
The results of linking research on analysis of the railway vehicle properties with the new designs of wheelsets, allowing various angular velocities of the tread rotations relative to the hubs by retaining gravitational-frictional torsional connection between them, are considered. Through an analysis of dynamic features during the hunting motion of the vehicle, carried out on the computer model using the nonlinear creep theories, the advantages of this design are found, which include first of all the decrease of wheel and rail wear, and improvement of dynamic features. The issue of metro car motion in the traction mode is specially considered. Tests on physical models and field tests of the tram and metro car verified the results received on numerical models.

Abstract:
In this paper we present the result of a case study on the switching overvoltage transients of ac electrified railroad trains equipped with switch-type rectifiers in Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA). It was found that new generation of switch-type converters could result in significant over-voltage of magnitude comparable to lightning surge if no proper snubber circuit be used. The switching surge could damage power equipment of nearby trains in the same service zone, as observed in the TRA system. It is recommended that maximum tolerance of switching over-voltage be clearly specified in the procurement phase of new trains with switch-type converters then accurately verified in the commissioning phase to ensure proper preventive measure be installed.
