Monomorium floricola is a cosmopolitan urban, and a worldwide pest in homes and hospitals. Few studies were directed with this species. With the objective of adding useful information for pest control programs, the present study aimed at analyzing: the interaction of these ants with other species when foraging for food; morphology of immature and adult reproductive forms; possible causes for the appearance of anomalous reproductive forms; internal anatomy of the digestive system; the tolerance of workers to different temperatures; different traits affecting the fecundity of virgin queens. Workers proved more defensive when foraging in enemy or neutral territory, and more aggressive when at their own territory. Their reaction towards alien ants was dependent upon their species. Sugary substances were more attractive than fatty foods, and workers spent more time collecting more concentrated sugary liquids, and give preference to foods at higher amounts and nearer to the nest entrance. Larvae of M. floricola were different from other Monomorium species by their greater diversity of types of body hairs, and by their number of mouthpart sensilla. Reproductive adults were described in richness of details, as we needed parameters to detect the anomalous forms. The appearance of anomalous forms is apparently not caused by temperature variations or by the presence of symbiotic bacteria. The digestive system of adults of M. floricola and M. pharaonis were unique, e.g. by their having spines in the crop and fixed number of Malpighian tubules and rectal pads among specimens of different castes and ages. Workers of M. floricola were tolerant to cold temperatures, but not to high temperatures, in comparison with tested species M. pharaonis and T. bicarinatum. Abstract:
Tramp ants have been scientific recognized due to the investigations conducted since 1970 when pathogens were for the first time encountered in ant samples collected from hospital environments. The surveys conducted since then state the presence of important microorganisms such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella and Enterobacter. However, very little knowledge has been produced in regards to food preparation areas. Tramp ants have been frequently detected in houses, food preparation areas as well as in industrial and commercial restaurants and are considered as one of the most important pests nowadays. The present survey investigated the food industry important pathogens found in tramp species that were collected from industrial restaurants. The samples were obtained with agar blood plaque baits and were later incubated in several culture means: Baird Parker for Staphylococcus, Bismut Sulfit for Salmonella and MacKonkey for enterobacteria. The results show the presence of S. aureus and enterobacteria in the ant samples collected from the industrial restaurant environment in São Paulo, Brazil. These results indicate the tramp ants can be important mechanical vectors of relevant pathogens for the food industry.

Having as a starting point the trace as text, this dissertation presents, as its main objective, to bring about the social plot of the 1950s in the city of Rio de Janeiro as the federal capital, in the light of the humoristic representation of Carlos Estevão in O Cruzeiro. Through the imagetic humor of one of the most popular and representative artists of the biggest magazine in terms of circulation in that decade, the aim was to visualize experiences and ruptures in the established system, located in the structure generated inside a society which lay in an apparent territory of calmness and in a dream of modernity , projecting a hegemonic speech, which at the same time, alienated the multiple life experiences of the several social subjects inserted in the complexes of their daily lives. Conceiving culture as a polyphonic instance, in the view of Bakhtin s theoretical and methodological statements, this research sought to favor the emergence of the plural voices present in the artist s flow of imagetic plots, which appeared in Estevão s various humor series, as it contemplated and intertextuality of sources. Facing this problem, the focus was to give priority to the analysis of the imagetic production located into the city s routine, seeking to capture the various groups dynamics, resulting in the emergence of the silenced and invisible individuals, also exposing the existence of conflicts and social tensions, which underlie the social plots in the context of transformation into a cosmopolitan and urban society. Following these aspects, the problematization of the series related to the emergence of a middle class consumption society seeking to socially ascend, which would allow people a criticism towards the modernization speech and would reveal the deep distance between real life and the ideal country projected as a target. In this view, opposing Carlos Estevão de Sousa s imagetic humoristic narrative to that modernity speech, represented the confrontation related to the built memory of the period as well as the delimitation of his trace and plot critical potentiality. The broadness of the sources analyses present in o Diário da Noite and in O Jornal favored the establishment of the humor representation about the country, the nation and the people as well, completing a picture of problematizations about the historically established memory in the period, in the same manner as it enabled the visibility of the resistance and compliance of the various individuals and social groups

Abstract: Mário de Andrade was the first director of the Culture Department em São Paulo (1935-1938) and projected the Infancy Parks in the city. Both themes are key elements for the analysis in which the child body's education occurred. The dialog between science and art, at the Parks, opens the possibility for different speeches and practices. The body's education, in this case, is the education that happens in the place occupied by the men, being it at school, on the streets and also at the Infancy Parks. Each period marks the bodies in many ways. Time and space are the main categories to talk about the childhood and the way that society forms individuals. The archives consulted can be found, in São Paulo, in Mário de Andrade Library, in the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB/USP) and in the Historic Patrimony Division (DPH). Full text
Abstract:
Trap-jaw ants are characterized by high-speed mandibles used for prey capture and defense. Power-amplified mandibles have independently evolved at least four times among ants, with each lineage using different structures as a latch, spring and trigger. We examined two species from the genus Myrmoteras (subfamily Formicinae), whose morphology is unique among trap-jaw ant lineages, and describe the performance characteristics, spring-loading mechanism and neuronal control of Myrmoteras strikes. Like other trap-jaw ants, Myrmoteras latch their jaws open while the large closer muscle loads potential energy in a spring. The latch differs from other lineages and is likely formed by the co-contraction of the mandible opener and closer muscles. The cuticle of the posterior margin of the head serves as a spring, and is deformed by approximately 6% prior to a strike. The mandibles are likely unlatched by a subgroup of closer muscle fibers with particularly short sarcomeres. These fast fibers are controlled by two large motor neurons whose dendrites overlap with terminals of large sensory neurons originating from labral trigger hairs. Upon stimulation of the trigger hairs, the mandibles shut in as little as 0.5 ms and at peak velocities that are comparable with other trap-jaw ants, but with much slower acceleration. The estimated power output of the mandible strike (21 kW kg(-1)) confirms that Myrmoteras jaws are indeed power amplified. However, the power output of Myrmoteras mandibles is significantly lower than distantly related trap-jaw ants using different spring-loading mechanisms, indicating a relationship between power-amplification mechanism and performance.

Abstract:
The rapid development of optofluidics, the combination of microfluidics and integrated optics, since its formal conception in the early 2000's has aided in the advance of single-molecule analysis. The optofluidic platform discussed in this dissertation is called the liquid core anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide (LC-ARROW). This platform uses ARROW waveguides to orthogonally intersect a liquid core waveguide with solid core rib waveguides for the excitation of specifically labeled molecules and collection of fluorescence signal. Since conception, the LC-ARROW platform has demonstrated its effectiveness as a lab-on-a-chip fluorescence biosensor. However, until the addition of optical multiplexing excitation waveguides, the platform lacked a critical functionality for use in rapid disease diagnostics, namely the ability to simultaneously detect different types of molecules and particles. In disease diagnostics, the ability to multiplex, detect and identify multiple biomarkers simultaneously is paramount for a sensor to be used as a rapid diagnostic system. This work brings optofluidic multiplexing to the sensor through the implementation of three specific designs: (1) the Y-splitter was the first multi-spot excitation design implemented on the platform, although it did not have the ability to multiplex it served as a critical stepping stone and showed that multi-spot excitation could improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the platform by ~50,000 times; (2) a multimode interference (MMI) waveguide which took the multi-spot idea and then demonstrated spectral multiplexing capable of correctly identifying multiple diverse biomarkers simultaneously; and, (3) a Triple-Core design which incorporates excitation and collection along multiple liquid cores, enabling spatial multiplexing which increases the number of individual molecules to be identified concurrently with the MMI waveguide excitation. In addition to describing the development of optical multiplexing, this dissertation includes an investigation of another LC-ARROW based design that enables 2D bioparticle trapping, the Anti-Brownian Electrokinetic (ABEL) trap. This design demonstrates two-dimensional compensation of a particle's Brownian motion in solution. The capability to maintain a molecule suspended in solution over time enables the ability to gain a deeper understanding of cellular function and therapies based on molecular functions.

Abstract:
We studied the interactions between an antlion pit, a conical depression in sand, and its prey. We identified an optimal range of prey size with a behavioural ecology experiment with ants. Prey that are lighter or heavier are less captured, for different causes, than prey of around 2 and 3 mg. We also found that the compaction of the granular medium where antlion built impacts on the probability of capture of prey. The pit so has a memory of the initial state of the immediate soil environment, with consequences for the predator success

Abstract:
Constructed Reality: A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Texts Surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict After the United States’ Recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel. Within hours the American announcement was international news with an almost unanimous UN Security Council condemning the act. The purpose of this study is to examine how the conflict is constructed in news articles from Sweden's two largest daily newspapers as well as two largest evening papers, ranging a week from the US recognition of Jerusalem. The study is conducted with a starting point in theoretical perspectives that deal with the media’s influence of people's perceptions of reality and their world view. The methods applied are first and foremost the overarching model of critical discourse analysis, with a combination of quantitative content analysis and qualitative text analysis. The study concludes that overwhelmingly, the newspapers represented the parties involved (Israelis and Palestinians) in a balanced, neutral fashion. The newspapers were however not as balanced and neutral when it came to which sources were cited.

Abstract:
Multiple Pseudacteon phorid fly species, including P. tricuspis and P. curvatus, have been released in the southern United States beginning in 1997 and 2003 (respectively) to serve as biological control agents against red imported fire ants Solenopsis invicta Buren (hereafter referred to as RIFA). Field research in the United States on phorid/RIFA interactions has addressed establishment and spread of released species. Additionally, studies are needed on phorid biology and ecology with respect to spatial distribution and phenology, phorid/habitat associations and phorid-mediated affects on RIFA foraging patterns. A suite of manipulative laboratory and field experiments/observations were conducted to 1) develop a novel phorid sampling device to provide uniform and repeatable sampling of flies, 2) assess spatial distributions and phenology of Pseudacteon tricuspis and P. curvatus, 3) assess P. tricuspis and P. curvatus habitat associations and 4) assess phorid-mediated affects on RIFA foraging patterns and caste ratios. PTS Traps (developed for this research) are significantly more effective than previous sampling methods in terms of mean number of flies collected, efficiency of use and % trap success. Data collected with these traps allowed for the determination of patterns of species-specific phenology and relative densities through time and speciesspecific numerical/spatial superiority (Chapter IV). P. curvatus was significantly more abundant than P. tricuspis in only one of the habitat types sampled (df (160) = 4.57, P < 0.005). P. tricuspis densities did not differ significantly among habitat type. Llaboratory experiments revealed that phorid-exposed RIFA colonies foraged less intensively diurnally (df = 1,558; P < 0.05) and more intensively nocturnally (df = 778; P < 0.05) relative to control colonies. Field data regarding this compensatory nocturnal foraging shift did not corroborate those of the laboratory work. In the field there was no significant difference in foraging intensity during nocturnal (df (18) = -0.486, P = 0.633) and diurnal (df (18) = 1.375 P = 0.186) sampling periods. Lastly, chi-square analysis of RIFA forager size-classes revealed significant differences between phorid-infested (treatment) and phorid-free (control) sites (X 2 = 6811.85, df = 3, P < 0.05) with a significantly greater proportion of small RIFA foragers at the phorid-infested site.

This project focuses on two major research topics which concern the development of sample preparation method for veterinary drug residues with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. One of the topics was a novel online eluent switching for one single anion exchange column to perform the online extraction, separation and analysis of nine non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs in pig serum. The successful extraction and separation of nine non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs(carprofen, diclofenac, flunixin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, meclofenamic acid, mefenamic acid, niflumic acid, and tolfenamic acid)were through their different degree of dissociation by their different pKa values at different pHs plus different intermolecular π–π interactions and dipole–dipole forces with the anion–exchanger on the stationary phase. The limit of detection of the analysis was in the range of 0.2–2.5 ng/mL. The intraday and interday precision were in the range of 2.1–14.5% and 2.8–6.5%, respectively. The analysis accuracy were in the range of 87.2–99.8%. These data show excellent analytical sensitivity, accuracy, and precision. Real pig serum sample analysis showed a greatest concentraction of 3480 ± 36 ng/mL and 431 ± 13 ng/mL for flunixin and tolfenamic acid, respectively, after one hour injection of one flunixin and tolfenamic acid dosage. Both residues were reduced to about 20 ng/mL at the time of 24 h later after injection and were less than the regulated maximum allowed residue level. The second topic was the development of a two dimensional chromatography–mass spectrometric system by coupling a cation–exchange solid phase microextraction column to a reversed–phase liquid chromatography column for extracting, separating, and analyzing five ionophore coccidiostats in eggs. The first chromatographic dimension performs the online solid–phase extraction by the cation–exchange mechanism between sodium bearing coccidiostats cations and the cation–exchamger stationary phase. The second chromatographic dimension was for the separation of five ionophore coccidiostats(lasalocid, maduramicin, monensin, narasin, and salinomycin)by the C18 reversed–phase column. The limit of detection of the mass spectrometry was in the range of 0.15–0.19 ng/mL. The intraday and interday precision were in the range of 3.2–9.7% and 3.0–4.9%, respectively. The analysis accuracy were in the range of 90.0–99.6%. These data show excellent analytical sensitivity, accuracy, and precision. The real egg samples were collected from hens fed either with or without maduramicin containing feed for one week. The results indicated a greatest maduramicin concentration of 100.1 ng/mL at the second day of drug withdrawal. After seven days of drug withdrawal, the maduramicin residue concentration was 12.2 ng/mL which disobeys the regulated maximum allowed residue level of not detection.

(6581261), Christa L. Jennings. "Social Media in Politics: Exploring Trump's Rhetorical Strategy During the 2016 U.S. Presidential Campaign Within Twitter's Discursive Space." Thesis, 2019.

Abstract:

The prevalence of social media in political campaigns are changing the face of politics in the United States and abroad. The rapid pace at which this change is occurring demands inquiry into the previously unexplored area of unconventional political campaign messaging practices on social media. Investigation of Donald Trump’s use of tweets as rhetorical strategy in the discursive space of Twitter during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign revealed a bypass of traditional media and its source verification processes. This circumventing of mainstream media channels facilitated Trump’s deployment of an unchecked ‘broken system’ narrative alleging government corruption

and a rigged system. Trump’s tweet discourses tapped into existing feelings of disenfranchisement and disaffection felt by a self-identified politically marginalized segment of society. This study

investigates how social media use in political campaigns can serve as a public sphere for contestation of social and political norms. An interdisciplinary theoretical frame comprised of Feenberg’s critical theory of technology, McLuhan’s media ecology, Fraser’s counterpublic spheres, and Iser’s implied reader offer new understandings about the power of anti-establishment discourses and a hybrid discursive space to destabilize governing institutions and redefine social and political identities. Study of Trump’s tweets as rhetorical strategy granted insights into the social and political capacity of alternative truth to undermine the political process. Further, it uncovered the power of social media to awaken and leverage existing political identities for personal political gain.
