Abstract:
Web archiving is necessary to retain the history of the World Wide Web and to study its evolution. It is important for the cultural heritage community. Some organizations are legally obligated to capture and archive Web content. The advent of transactional Web archiving makes the archiving process more efficient, thereby aiding organizations to archive their Web content. This study measures and analyzes the performance of transactional Web archiving systems. To conduct a detailed analysis, we construct a meaningful design space defined by the system specifications that determine the performance of these systems. SiteStory, a state-of-the-art transactional Web archiving system, and local archiving, an alternative archiving technique, are used in this research. We experimentally evaluate the performance of these systems using the Greek version of Wikipedia deployed on dedicated hardware on a private network. Our benchmarking results show that the local archiving technique uses a Web server’s resources more efficiently than SiteStory for one data point in our design space. Better performance than SiteStory in such scenarios makes our archiving solution favorable to use for transactional archiving. We also show that SiteStory does not impose any significant performance overhead on the Web server for the rest of the data points in our design space.

This dissertation addresses the challenge of maintaining the correctness of transactional memory programs, while improving its parallelism with small transactions and relaxed isolation levels. The efficiency of the transactional memory systems depends directly on the level of parallelism, which in turn depends on the conflict rate. A high conflict rate between memory transactions can be addressed by reducing the scope of transactions, but this approach may turn the application prone to the occurrence of atomicity violations. Another way to address this issue is to ignore some of the conflicts by using a relaxed isolation level, such as snapshot isolation, at the cost of introducing write-skews serialization anomalies that break the consistency guarantees provided by a stronger consistency property, such as opacity. In order to tackle the correctness issues raised by the atomicity violations and the write-skew anomalies, we propose two static analysis techniques: one based in a novel static analysis algorithm that works on a dependency graph of program variables and detects atomicity violations; and a second one based in a shape analysis technique supported by separation logic augmented with heap path expressions, a novel representation based on sequences of heap dereferences that certifies if a transactional memory program executing under snapshot isolation is free from writeskew anomalies. The evaluation of the runtime execution of a transactional memory algorithm using snapshot isolation requires a framework that allows an efficient implementation of a multi-version algorithm and, at the same time, enables its comparison with other existing transactional memory algorithms. In the Java programming language there was no framework satisfying both these requirements. Hence, we extended an existing software transactional memory framework that already supported efficient implementations of some transactional memory algorithms, to also support the efficient implementation of multi-version algorithms. The key insight for this extension is the support for storing the transactional metadata adjacent to memory locations. We illustrate the benefits of our approach by analyzing its impact with both single- and multi-version transactional memory algorithms using several transactional workloads.

This research study deals with the widespread concern that exists amongst parents, educators and healthcare professionals working with children about issues regarding bullying in childhood and adolescence. By using the Transactional Analysis (TA) theory, this research project aimed to describe possible social transactions that occur between bully perpetrators and bully victims, and to examine these social transactions from the perspective of potentially predisposed personality profiles. The link between the personality profile and social transactions lie within the notion that our personality profiles could possibly influence the way we interact with or behave towards other individuals. The motivation behind this research study was therefore to analyse and examine the social transactions that occur between bully perpetrators and bully victims, which exemplifies the unique relationship that defines a bully perpetrator and bully victim in order to better explain (by way of TA) the ‘games’ they play. This was done by identifying the psychological profile tendencies that prompt bully perpetrators and bully victims to engage in repetitive transactions in order to uncover the games they tend to play, as well as to foster an understanding of why bully victims struggle to ‘unhook’ from these dysfunctional transactions.

Transactional Memory (TM) is an approach to concurrent programming based on the transactional semantics borrowed from database systems. In this paradigm, a transaction is a sequence of actions that may execute in a single logical instant, as though it was the only one being executed at that moment. Unlike concurrent systems based in locks, TM does not enforce that a single thread is performing the guarded operations. Instead, like in database systems, transactions execute concurrently, and the effects of a transaction are undone in case of a conflict, as though it never happened. The advantages of TM are an easier and less error-prone programming model, and a potential increase in scalability and performance. In spite of these advantages, TM is still a young and immature technology, and has still to become an established programming model. It still lacks the paraphernalia of tools and standards which we have come to expect from a widely used programming paradigm. Testing and analysis techniques and algorithms for TM programs are also just starting to be addressed by the scientific community, making this a leading research work is many of these aspects. This work is aimed at statically identifying possible runtime anomalies in TMprograms. We addressed both low-level dataraces in TM programs, as well as high-level anomalies resulting from incorrect splitting of transactions. We have defined and implemented an approach to detect low-level dataraces in TM programs by converting all the memory transactions into monitor protected critical regions, synchronized on a newly generated global lock. To validate the approach, we have applied our tool to a set of tests, adapted from the literature, that contain well documented errors. We have also defined and implemented a new approach to static detection of high-level concurrency anomalies in TM programs. This new approach works by conservatively tracing transactions, and matching the interference between each consecutive pair of transactions against a set of defined anomaly patterns. Once again, the approach was validated with well documented tests adapted from the literature.

Abstract:
Functional Fluency denotes efficacy of interpersonal functioning in terms of flexibility and balance of the behavioural modes a person uses. The aim of this project is to design and create a psychometric tool for mapping the patterns of such functioning. The intention is that feedback on the test results will stimulate the insights and understanding to support and encourage positive behavioural change. This process, involving the development of self-awareness, which is a key aspect of emotional intelligence, will thus promote emotional literacy. Transactional Analysis (TA) ego state theory provides the basis for the rational-theoretical strategy of instrument construction, which uses the author's expanded TA model of ego state function, the Functional Fluency model. The resulting self-report questionnaire, the Transactional Behaviour Profile, comprises a nine-scale index of Functional Fluency, the FFI. Methodological process includes construct conceptualisation, generation of behavioural indicators and transformation of these into test items. Validation of test items leads into instrument construction followed by a Pilot Study with over 300 respondents from a broad span of human service provision. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses provide evidence of both theoretical coherence and validity of the model as well as practical efficacy of the instrument in terms of the project aims. Indications for further refinement and correlation studies are examined, and plans proposed. The theory of Transactional Analysis addresses both the interpersonal and the intrapsychic. The FFI is designed to do likewise. Thus, although the FFI model is essentially one of interpersonal functioning, appropriate in a tool for training and personal development, it could potentially contribute an objective form of behavioural diagnosis in psychotherapeutic contexts, because of its coherent theoretical links with TA structural ego state models. The thesis constitutes the research basis for what will be ongoing development of the Transactional Behaviour Profile for indexing Functional Fluency in a variety of contexts.

Abstract:
An issue authorities and banks face is fraud related to payments and transactions where huge monetary losses occur to a party or where money laundering schemes are carried out. Previous work in the field of machine learning for fraud detection has addressed the issue as a supervised learning problem. In this thesis, we propose a model which can be used in a fraud detection system with transactions and payments that are unlabeled. The proposed modelis a Long Short-term Memory in an auto-encoder decoder network (LSTMAED)which is trained and tested on transformed data. The data is transformed by reducing it to Principal Components and clustering it with K-means. The model is trained to reconstruct the sequence with high accuracy. Our results indicate that the LSTM-AED performs better than a random sequence generating process in learning and reconstructing a sequence of payments. We also found that huge a loss of information occurs in the pre-processing stages.
Obehöriga transaktioner och bedrägerier i betalningar kan leda till stora ekonomiska förluster för banker och myndigheter. Inom maskininlärning har detta problem tidigare hanterats med hjälp av klassifierare via supervised learning. I detta examensarbete föreslår vi en modell som kan användas i ett system för att upptäcka bedrägerier. Modellen appliceras på omärkt data med många olika variabler. Modellen som används är en Long Short-term memory i en auto-encoder decoder nätverk. Datan transformeras med PCA och klustras med K-means. Modellen tränas till att rekonstruera en sekvens av betalningar med hög noggrannhet. Vår resultat visar att LSTM-AED presterar bättre än en modell som endast gissar nästa punkt i sekvensen. Resultatet visar också att mycket information i datan går förlorad när den förbehandlas och transformeras.

Abstract:
The research in this thesis investigates the learning processes of absorptive capacity (AC) as an element within organisation innovation. An analysis of leadership ‘styles’ is undertaken and factors for effective innovation adoption are considered. It is apparent that AC has been well researched in recent years but there is evidence that little attention has been given into important influences such as leadership. Consequently, AC is determined to involve managerial learning through three processes. These include: (1) exploratory learning as an ability to value and acquire external knowledge, (2) transformative learning to assimilate this knowledge, and (3) exploitative learning to use knowledge for innovation. However, there is little known about interventions of AC learning towards innovation and the effects of top and middle managers’ leadership styles on these processes. Therefore, the research initially attempts to investigate the relationship between AC, innovation, and leadership styles with a view to exploring valuable theoretical insights into the learning processes involved. A conceptual model is formulated which suggests a relationship between the learning processes of AC with different stages of innovation adoption. In this respect, the role of managers is investigated through attention to ‘transformational’ and ‘transactional’ leadership styles where the former changes employees’ values for achieving common goals and the latter encourages exiting practices. The methodology adopted involved a qualitative strategy with data collected through three substantive case studies from research sites in Iran. In total 31 Semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents to explore the learning processes of AC and leadership styles on innovation. Secondary documents and non-participant observations provided further insights by triangulating the data. Data was analysed in two stages (i) a description of each case was reported (ii) a thematic analysis was used in order to compare the case companies collectively. The findings supported the effects of the learning processes of AC on innovation adoption. It was also found that the leadership behaviours of top and middle managers change from transformational to transactional leadership styles during the exploitative learning process. The influence of top managers’ knowledge, middle managers’ intention, and trust in middle managers also emerged as important constructs in the learning processes. The research contributed to the learning processes of AC and the influence of managerial leadership styles by adding new insights to organisational theory. The results will also be of value to practitioners by providing prescriptive analysis when using external knowledge effectively for adopting innovation.

Stress is a problem in today's world and adolescents are not exempt from suffering its ill effects. Currently no stress management courses are offered as part of the formal guidance programme in high schools or in the community. This pilot study is an attempt to construct a stress management course based on the concepts of Transactional Analysis. The course was implemented with a multi-racial, standard eight group of nine boys and girls. The course was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The quantitative measures proved to be inappropriate to this study and did not render any useful information. The study found that the scholars expressed that they had changed in their handling of their daily stressors as a result of the course. Personal growth had also taken place. The findings of this research are discussed in terms of the important implications they have for school guidance programmes.

Abstract:
Although transactional analysis (TA) theory has been used by psychotherapists since its introduction by Eric Berne in the 1960s, the ego state functioning constructs, a seminal part of the theory, have not been adequately validated. Previous research has focused on whether therapy using TA methodology works. This study tested the TA ego state constructs by measuring client change occurring during psychotherapy and comparing those changes with predictions from the TA theory. Fifty-six subjects, who were clients at a university counseling center in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, were tested before and after therapy using two standardized instruments, the Adjective Check List (ACL) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and client and therapist global ratings of success of therapy. Critical Parent, Nurturing Parent, Adult, and Adapted Child ego state scores from the ACL all changed in the predicted directions and reached statistical significance. Free Child ego state score changes did not reach statistical significance. Ego state scores correlated with BSI Global Severity Index in predicted directions and all correlations except Critical Parent were statistically significant. Changes in ego state scores did not correlate with client and therapist ratings of success with one exception--Nurturing Parent was related to Client ratings of success. Changes in ego state scores did not correlate with subject pretest symptomatology, number of sessions, or the therapist's level of experience. Limitations of the study and recommendations for further research are discussed.

Transactional Analysis, or TA, has been used for more than four decades to enhance interpersonal relationships and promote personal growth through counselling and psychotherapy. It has been used to advantage in organisations, principally in the business world. It was thought at the outset of this study that TA could also be of benefit to schools.The aim of this study was to find out whether TA methods could be used in schools to improve student outcomes in science and mathematics, to enhance interpersonal relationships and to promote positive behaviour. The study trialled TA by using it with a group of at-risk students to discover whether its use would bring about positive change.A group of ten at-risk students became part of a mentoring programme, using TA. This programme focussed on the behaviour and academic progress of the students, and sought to empower them to make positive changes. This group referred to as the sample group, was compared with a control group. The Adult ego-state (thinking) was promoted in the students in order to shift their 'locus of control' from their Negative Adapted Child ego-state, the source of much non-productive, inappropriate and rebellious behaviour.The study upheld the reliability and validity of the questionnaires used, namely the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction, the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (School Form) and the Mooney Problem Checklist. The study prompted the construction of an informal test, the Ego-State Questionnaire, which proved to be informative.Poor attendance and school behaviour records were good indicators of a student's 'at-risk' status. At-risk students were found to be already achieving below their potential in science and mathematics at entry to secondary school.The mentoring programme ran for six months, and at the end of this the sample group had improved behavioural records and increased self esteem. Their number of perceived problems had dropped dramatically, and their academic results were improved.Interpersonal relationships between the sample group and their science teachers were better than the interpersonal relationships with their mathematics teachers, indicating a continued difficulty with abstract ideas at the end of the programme and a need to run such programmes over a longer time span. Interpersonal relationships did improve out of school with parents and peers. Clear preferences were indicated for what students preferred in the behaviours of their ideal teacher: understanding, helping/friendly, leadership and strict behaviours.Encouragement of Adult ego-state was shown to be an appropriate and productive approach to the improvement of academic and behavioural outcomes for at-risk students in science and mathematics. The study also showed that at-risk young people had a lower than average Nurturing Parent ego-state available to them.Teachers rated their TA101 course highly, and found that it gave them a fresh perspective on classroom difficulties. Both teachers and students benefited from the use of TA in this study.

The research presented in this thesis has focussed on exploring buyer- supplier relationships from a human perspective. To date, researchers across the globe have studied buyer-supplier relationships and endeavoured to find means to try to make them better. This has led to many new relationship development programmes initiated by companies and new concepts introduced by academics for the betterment of buyersupplier relationships. The focus of academics has been in trying to study buyersupplier relationships from various factors, viz. power, opportunistic behaviour, unethical behaviour, partnerships, collaborations, etc. All these endeavours have focussed on using technology or business processes in order to streamline operations and create environments, which would foster partnerships or collaborations. One aspect not usually given prominence in these studies has been the presence of humans in the relationship as representatives of the transacting companies. Giving this more focus, the researcher feels that organisational culture plays a very strong role in the way organisations operate, and when two organisations transact with each other the individual culture is bound to play a role in the way the transaction is conducted. The individual culture of the organisation also depends upon the humans in the organisation. Since, the focus of the research was on exploring the buyer-supplier relationships from a human perspective, the research sought this perspective from people working in purchasing or sales functions in different companies. The information was collected by conducting "Phenomenological Interviews" with focus on "critical incidents" affecting the relationship. The information was analysed for themes which led to the need to study buyer-supplier relationships from two perspectives: 1) game-like behaviour, 2) discretion, humans have in the relationship. The presence of game-like behaviour and humans in the relationship led the researcher to study the concepts of "Transactional Analysis" and check for the feasibility to transfer the concepts from a therapeutic setting to buyer- supplier relationships. The research has been successful in exploring issues affecting buyer-supplier relationships. A methodology for aligning supply chains by taking into account human issues has been proposed. The methodology comprises a relationship framework that is used for studying buyer-supplier relationships on a macro- level based on the levels of satisfaction the entities have with each other. Since high levels of dissatisfaction lead to various change- inducing transactions or game-like behaviour between the entities, the framework identifies the status of the relationship, and can be used to gauge what's going to happen to it, once the transaction is over. The concepts of Transactional Analysis and the tools associated with it, viz. Drama Triangle analysis and structural modelling are useful in studying the dynamics of the transactions from the human perspective and also from a psychological perspective.

Depression is a common mental health disorder which affects around one in ten people. A range of psychotherapies have demonstrated efficacy for treating depression. Transactional Analysis (TA) is a relatively under-researched therapeutic approach which had hitherto not been tested for effectiveness for depression. This study used systematic case study research which incorporated both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the process and outcome of TA psychotherapy for depression. A naturalistic design was used and five cases were examined to explore the application of up to sixteen sessions of TA therapy in community-based routine practice. Four of the cases were analysed using Elliott’s (2001, 2002) Hermeneutic Single-Case Efficacy Design. This involved the recruitment of a number of independent psychotherapy researchers who adjudicated the cases and provided a verdict on the outcome of these cases. Case study method and cross-case analysis techniques were also developed during this investigation. The findings show that TA therapy can be effective for the treatment of depression. A benchmarking strategy suggests that TA is likely to have comparable effectiveness to other therapies. It is proposed that therapy is more effective when the type of therapy and therapist style is matched to client preferences and that pre-therapy preparation/ role induction is beneficial to overall outcome. TA appears to be a coherent and integrative approach to psychotherapy, which can be used flexibly according to client need and preferences. The clients in this series all reported finding the use of TA theory to understand their own process and take charge of their own change process to be helpful. The use of TA concepts and language provides the therapist and client with a framework for a collaborative approach to therapy. The integrative nature of TA and the use of shared language are two distinctive features of the approach that make a useful contribution to the wider psychotherapy literature. Further research is warranted to confirm and develop these findings.

However, recent concerns around the effects of foreign investment in residential properties has been an issue yet unaddressed. This thesis attempts to fill this gap by utilising a novel set of granular data for improved objectivity and transparency using a small, open economy (the Gold Coast) as a setting. OLS estimates support the hypothesis that foreign investors paid more for units relative to owner occupiers; mispricing is evident within the market and only weak evidence of disposition effect present.

Abstract:
Background: This thesis explores, in-depth, the experience and sense-making of transactional analyst psychotherapists working with clients who present with Internet addiction (IA). It engages with the therapist’s broad experience and understanding of Internet addiction presentation, therapeutic assessment, ‘diagnosis’ and ‘treatment’ rather than the singular experience, expression, and meaning-making of the individual client. Method: As a counselling psychologist trainee, I was particularly interested in sampling highly experienced therapists, with an extensive range of skills developed through a robust clinical training. Four therapist participants, all professional members of the European Association of Transactional Analysis (EATA), were interviewed using semi-structured, one-to-one interviews and the material was analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Findings and Discussion: Four higher-order concepts emerged within this study. They concerned: the complexity of IA; aetiological and predisposing factors; functions and features of IA; and treatment factors. Practical and theoretical implications for future research, clinical supervision, treatment, psycho-educational and political programmes are presented. Of the key emergent findings the Internet was understood by participants as a conduit or medium for addiction given a high prevalence of an underlying ‘disorders’. All of the participants believed in the existence of childhood aetiological roots which underpinned comorbidity with IA. Attachment difficulties in childhood would often predispose individuals to develop issues around loneliness, low self-esteem, control, loss and instability, and cognitive dissonance later in life. Participants believed a relationship existed between depression, low self-esteem and escapism as contributing factors. Conclusion: A systematic review of the extant research is proposed, along with quantitative studies to specifically evaluate the strength of this relationship. Further empirical research is particularly recommended to explore how these factors can predispose individuals to developing sub-types of IA, and especially in the context of historic childhood abuse and / or neglect. The complex nature and aetiology of IA can demand a high level of clinical expertise from professionals who would benefit from specific trainings concerning childhood attachment difficulties. Integrating a psychodynamic approach, or being aware of transference processes, could possibly enhance treatment effectiveness, and help safeguard both clients and therapists from counter-therapeutic interventions.

Michael Moore's theory of transactional distance, developed in the age of correspondence schools, contributed greatly to theory building in distance education. The theory needs revision, however, when applied to web-based learning environments, specifically by defining transactional distance to include students' relationships with other elements in the learning environment that prohibit their active engagement with learning. The new theoretical model of transactional distance has four dimensions: transactional distance between student and student (TDSS), transactional distance between student and teacher (TDST), transactional distance between student and content (TDSC), and transactional distance between student and interface: online course management system (TDSI). A preliminary item pool of more than 200 items to measure the constructs of TD, TDST, TDSS, TDSC, and TDSI was generated and sent to a panel of experts for review. Items that the reviewers considered weak or very weak in terms of relevance to the constructs and/or clarity and conciseness were eliminated. After a pilot test and further revisions, the proposed scale of transactional distance was administered to a sample of 100 college students. Confirmatory factor analyses and exploratory analyses indicated that the measurement models, especially after modifications, possessed good fit for the data, and the modified scales possessed factorial validity. Reliability analyses indicated that the scales possessed strong internal consistency, with Cronbach alpha coefficients ranging from 0.8169 to 0.9530. Structural equation modeling procedures tested for the causal relationship between the four dimensions and students' general sense of transactional distance in web-based courses. Results indicate that the proposed model of transactional distance is acceptable. The strongest factor that affected students' sense of transactional distance and engagement with learning was found to be transactional distance between student and students (TDSS), followed by transactional distance between student and teacher (TDST), and then by transactional distance between student and content (TDSC). The findings have implications for the development of a revised theory of transactional distance in online education, and provide strong support for constructivist learning theories and social learning theories, reinforcing the importance of establishing learning communities in online learning environments.

Police leadership has traditionally been dominated by the commander style, yet the more recent generation of police officers reject this style of leadership. Little, however, is known about whether the different leadership styles of the full range of leadership model result in positive outcomes in policing organizations. The purpose of this quantitative meta-analysis study was to examine the relationship between transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles and the leadership outcomes in a policing context, such as subordinate satisfaction, perception of leadership effectiveness, and exerting extra effort. Data for this research synthesis derived from primary research studies, which included 9 U.S. and international correlational policing studies that together comprised 1,939 police officers who completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) instrument. The meta-analysis provided effect size estimates on the relationship between transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles and perception of leadership effectiveness, extra effort, and subordinate satisfaction. The results of this meta-analysis indicate the transformational style has a stronger positive relationship with perception of leadership effectiveness, extra effort, and subordinate satisfaction, than the other 2 leadership styles. The positive social change implications of this study provide recommendations to police executives to include transformational leadership with contemporary law enforcement practices. The transformational style may result in improvements to police officer motivation, performance, and job satisfaction, thus offering opportunities to improve public safety outcomes.

There were two major goals of this study - to examine validity of scores for the Boholst Life Position Scale and to examine potential associations between life positions and affective traits. Two hundred seventy-seven students enrolled in undergraduate psychology classes at a large university volunteered for the study. Concurrent validity of scores for the life position scale was supported based on two compared instruments. Pearson product-moment correlations for the comparisons were -.765 and .617, both statistically significant at the p < .001 level. Factor analysis demonstrated that the scale could accurately be conceptualized as consisting of two factors - an "I" factor and a "You" factor. MANOVA, ANOVA, multiple linear regression, and canonical correlation analysis were used to examine associations between life positions and the affective traits of angry, sad, glad, social anxiety, loneliness, and satisfaction with life. Subjects were catagorized into four groups representing their life position: "I'm OK, you're OK," "I'm OK, you're not OK," "I'm not OK, you're OK," and "I'm not OK, you're not OK." A MANOVA employing life position as the independent variable with four levels and the six affective traits as the dependent variables demonstrated statistical significance (p < .001 level) and h2 was .505. All six separate ANOVAs, with life position as the independent variable and each separate affective trait as the dependent variable, revealed statistical significance (p < .001) and h2 varied from a high of .396 for the sadness variable to a low of .116 for social anxiety. Six separate multiple linear regression equations using two independent variables, a measure of self-esteem and a measure of the perceived OK-ness of others, and each separate affective trait as the dependent variable, showed statistical significance (p < .001). The average Adjusted R2 was .475. Both canonical correlation functions were statistically significant (Rc12 = .77 and Rc22 = .21). In summary, life positions were strongly associated with specific affective traits.

In this thesis, I use a multi-perspectival analytical approach to investigate the paralanguage of naturally occurring work-based Instant Message conversations. My research into the field of computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) has shown that written non-verbal cues have been considered as important means of contextualising text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC), yet their scholarly treatment has been scant. Previous findings about the importance paralanguage in CMD have been further strengthened by the findings of the field of business communication: in the virtual work environment the lack of audio-visual information has been found to contribute to miscommunication and consequently hinder cooperation. The linguistic devices and discursive strategies that are used in order to compensate for the limitations imposed by the text-based communicative channel have therefore been identified as in need of further exploration. In this thesis, I have outlined a CMC cue system based on the previous findings of CMDA to investigate the range of cues used as non-verbal signals in workplace text- based CMC. I have also used a multi-perspectival approach based on the theoretical frameworks of interactional sociolinguistics, communities of practice, relational work and politeness and conversation analysis (CA) in order to investigate the range of interactional roles of paralanguage during computer-mediated business conversations. The interpretive CA-informed analysis I have conducted has provided evidence of the important role of non-verbal signals during the contextualisation of complex transactional and relational communicative goals in the workplace. The analysis in this thesis has provided two significant results: firstly, by incorporating the findings of research into paralanguage of spoken as well as other written genres it resulted in a comprehensive description of the orthographic and typographic non-verbal cues used in text-based CMC and, secondly, by drawing on the multi-perspectival framework, it allowed for a description of the complex interactional functions of these cues during the contextualisation of content and relational intent and the creation of interactional coherence in IM.

How can a character from a children’s book become so divisive that he causes arguments amongst adults? This essay uses transactional reader response theory to explain the reason why the character Severus Snape from the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling is so controversial. Applying notions from reader response theorists such as Rosenblatt and Iser together with earlier research on Snape will show how the reader’s opinion is affected by both the text itself and their own personal experience. A poll was created and posted on Facebook with over a thousand replies. This data is analysed and used to apply the theory on real examples. The conclusion of the essay is that Snape is both good and bad. He acts heroically but is also vindictive and petty. Snape is perhaps the most human of all Rowling’s characters and each reader recognises a little of themselves in him that they can relate to. Because of ongoing arguments regarding Snape readers have to constantly defend their opinion. As the opinion is re-evaluated it is also strengthened each time readers reconsider the story of Snape and, like Snape himself once asked Professor Quirrell to do, decide where their loyalties lie.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focused on the plight of teachers in the challenging traumatic context of high-risk schools on the Cape Flats, Western Cape, South Africa. Study aims were to measure the stress and burnout of educators and analyse the effect of three different interventions using psycho-educational workshops. Forty-three educators in three secondary schools took part for 15 hours in total over 10 weeks, as well as a control group of 20 teachers. Interventions were grounded in trauma release exercises (TRE), transpersonal psychology (TP) and transactional analysis (TA) practice, and can be conceptualised as primarily physical, emotional and cognitive approaches to stress and burnout prevention. In a mixed-methods study based on the transactional stress model, quantitative data comprised statistical analysis of stress, personal, work and learner-induced burnout and well-being, at the pre- and post-intervention stages. An analysis of the text coding of the educators’ stress, burnout, coping and well-being accounts followed. The study then focused on qualitative thematic analysis of the focus group interviews. Perceived stress was significantly different between the three intervention groups and control group and learner burnout was significantly reduced in the TRE (p=0.02) and TA (p=0.02) groups. There were trends for stress and burnout reduction for the TP group. Coding analysis focused on the intra-and inter-individual TRE, TP and TA tools that had an impact on educators in their efforts to cope with stress and burnout. Focus group interviews gave thematic insights into physical, emotional and cognitive responses to stress and burnout interventions on the individual, interpersonal and organisational levels and revealed new perspectives on classroom competency, with educators taking more responsibility for discipline in the classroom, their greatest stressor. This study indicated that TRE, TP and TA interventions offer educators in high-risk schools physiological, affective and cognitive approaches to dealing with threat and trauma, assisting with stress and burnout reduction, facilitating renewed insights into classroom competency.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie het gefokus op die toestand van onderwysers in die uitdagende, traumatiese konteks van hoë-risiko skole op die Kaapse Vlakte van die Wes-Kaap, Suid-Afrika. Die doelstellings van die ondersoek was om stres en uitbranding by onderwysers te meet en om die invloed van drie verskillende intervensies, in die vorm van psigo-opvoedkundige werkswinkels, te analiseer. Drie-en-veertig opvoeders in drie sekondêre skole het oor 10 weke vir 15 uur in totaal deelgeneem, sowel as ‘n kontrolegroep van 20 onderwysers. Die ingrypings is gegrond in die praktyke van trauma-ontladingsoefeninge (trauma release exercises [TRE]), transpersoonlike sielkunde (transpersonal psychology [TP]) en transaksionele analise (transactional analysis [TA]), en kan hoofsaaklik as fisiese, emosionele en kognitiewe benaderings tot die voorkoming van stres en uitbranding gekonseptualiseer word. In ’n gemengde metode studie gebaseer op die transaksionele stresmodel, het die kwantitatiewe data bestaan uit statistiese analises van stres, persoonlike, werks- en leerdergeïnduseerde uitbranding en welstand, vóór en ná die ingrypings. Dit is gevolg deur ’n analise van die tekskodering van die opvoeders se verslae oor hulle stres, uitbranding, behartiging en welstand. Die studie het hierna gefokus op ’n kwalitatiewe tematiese analise van die fokusgroeponderhoude. Waargenome stres het beduidend tussen die drie intervensiegroepe en die kontrolegroep verskil en leerderuitbranding het beduidend in die TRE (p=.02) en TA (p=.02) groepe verminder. Daar was tekens van vermindering van stres en uitbranding in die TP groep. Koderingsanalise het gefokus op die intra- en inter-individuele TRE, TP en TA gereedskap wat ’n impak op opvoeders gehad het in hulle pogings om stres en uitbranding te hanteer. Uncivil behavior in the workplace can cause absenteeism or low job performance among employees, yet little academic literature addresses this relationship, particularly in the public sector. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to use the transactional analysis of communication (TAC) model to explore the ramifications of incivility in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The central research questions focused on employee perceptions of incivility and effective communication within the VHA. Twelve VHA employees were recruited for participation through a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the participants along with some VHA archived video training. Data were inductively coded and analyzed for emergent themes. Key findings revealed that VHA lacked effective communication, and malingering occurred due to workplace incivility. It was concluded that TAC curtailed misunderstandings of social dysfunctions in communicating. Another theme that emerged is that although workplace relationships were highly esteemed by employees, they believed that communication issues hindered those professional relationships and suggested training could be a valuable tool to improve workplace communication and reduce incivility. It was recommended that similar studies of this phenomenon be conducted for greater understanding and knowledge to the discipline. TAC served to effect positive social change by educating VHA leadership and their employees on how to thwart incivility in the workplace.

This thesis proposed that theory on human territoriality, particularly the work of Irwin Altman and colleagues, can contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between people and their car. The car has often been labelled a territory, analogous to the home, which plays a significant role in the lives of individuals in motorised societies. A review of the existing literature on both territoriality and driver behaviour suggested that the car conforms to the defining features of a territory, being an important and enduring object that many drivers decorate with personal items and that they protect against invasion by other road users. Despite this literature, there is little empirical research to support the idea that the car is an imp011ant human territory. Using the methodological framework of transactional psychology, this thesis reported on three studies that utilised an array of self-rep01t techniques to answer research questions on the relationship between territoriality and driver behaviour. The research questions enquired as to whether drivers perceive the car and the surrounding road space as territory, whether they see the driving environment as defined in territo1ial terms, and whether these features influence behaviour on the road. In the first study, 13 focus groups were conducted to determine whether drivers' descriptions of the relationship with their car conformed to existing descriptions of territory. Specific interest was taken in whether the car conformed to Brown and Altman's (1981) descriptions of primary (e.g., home), secondary (e.g., workplace) or public (e.g., park) territory. Focus group questions reflected the territorial features of duration, centrality, marking range, marking intention, and response to invasion. Analysis revealed that the car can be considered a territory, with descriptions of the car closely matching Brown and Altman's descriptions of territory types. However, exactly what type of territory the car was depended on the individual. For instance, young drivers were more likely to perceive the car as aligned with notions of primary territory, while drivers of work vehicles were more likely to describe the car as a secondary or even public territory. Fm1her, dimensional variations were present within d1iver groups and within individuals, such that the broad application of the label 'primary', 'secondary' or 'public' territory to desc1ibe the car was not appropriate. As such, it was noted that territorial researchers should determine the nature of a person's relationship with a particu1ar place/object p1ior to making assumptions about what type of territory it is. Study Two examined the constructs (i.e., descriptors) that drivers use to interpret driving situations, hypothesising that they would correspond to territorial themes such as privacy, safety and control. Phase One of the study generated a representative list of 20 common driving situations, through the use of a travel diary, for subsequent use in a repertory grid task. In Phase Two, 101 drivers completed a repertory grid in which they compared the 20 situations on a se1ies of self-generated constructs. Generalised Procrustes analysis of the grids revealed two major dimensions that drivers use to interpret their driving environment, representing the constructs of safety, control, anger, stress and enjoyment. With few exceptions, these constructs were consistently applied by all drivers and across all driving situations. Safety and control are both linked to aspects of human territoriality. Control was also notable for representing both control over whether a situation is entered into, and control over what occurs once in the situation. Although anger, stress and enjoyment are not key territorial themes, this may reflect the comparatively deficient coverage of emotion in territorial literature. In Study Three, the survey responses of 403 drivers were used to test three hypotheses. First, principal components analysis of the relationship with the car revealed that the major themes characterising this association were linked to the dimensions of territoriality desc1ibed by Brown and Altman (1981). In addition, the degree to which each theme was experienced varied as a function of driver age and car ownership, a feature also noted in the focus group study. Second, the majority of drivers were able to nominate a part of the road-space surrounding the car that they saw as part of their territory. The size of this space varied as a function of the driver and the type of car driven. Third, mixed results were found for the effect of territoriality on self-reported aggressive and prosocial driving. Although viewing the car as a defendable space predicted aggressive behaviours, and believing that the car provides autonomy predicted prosocial driving in some situations, other variables directly related to territory were non-significant. As was found in Study Two, the emotional states of enjoyment and anger also played a role in predicting response to the behaviour of others. Together, these studies suggested that the car is a territory, for some drivers analogous to a primary territory such as the home. The manner in which the car, the surrounding road-space, and the driving environment are considered territorial has implications for understanding road user behaviour, including the topics of aggressive and prosocial driving, conformity with road rules, and travel demand management. As such, the findings of this research have potential application in the development of strategies to improve dri ver behaviour, specifically in relation to aggressive and prosocial driving. In addition, the research conducted in this thesis has implications for the further development of theory on human territoriality. Primarily this relates to further elucidating the role of control in territoriality, especially as it differentiates between primary, secondary and public territories. Territoriality theory would also benefit from a more comprehensive understanding of the role that emotion plays in territoriality. Given the exploratory nature of this research, further work is also required to further understand the links between territoriality and driver behaviour.

V dnešní době jsou vícevláknové programy běžné a s nimi i chyby v souběžnosti. Během posledních let bylo vytvořeno mnoho technik pro detekci takovýchto chyb, a i přesto mají vývojáři softwaru problém nalézt správné nástroje pro analýzu svých programů. Důvod je jednoduchý, fungující neznamená vždy praktický. Hodně nástrojů implementujících detekční techniky je obtížně použitelných, přizpůsobených pro konkrétní typy programů nebo synchronizace, nebo špatně škálují, aby zvládly analyzovat rozsáhlý software. Pro některé typy chyb v souběžnosti dokonce ani neexistují nástroje pro jejich detekci, i přesto že vývojáři softwaru na tyto chyby často narážejí ve svých programech. Hlavním cílem této práce je navrhnout nové techniky pro detekci chyb ve vícevláknových programech. Tyto techniky by měly být schopny analyzovat rozsáhlé programy, umožnit detekci méně studovaných typů chyb v souběžnosti, a podporovat širokou škálu programů s ohledem na to, jaké programové konstrukce používají.

Abstract Products and services are critical for companies as they create the foundation for companies’ financial success. Twenty per cent of company products typically account for some eighty per cent of sales volume. Nevertheless, the product portfolio decisions — how to strategically renew company product offering — tend to involve emotions, pet products and who-shout-the-loudest mentality while facts, numbers, and quantitative analyses are missing. Profitability is currently measured and reported at a company level, and firms seem unable to measure product-level profitability in a constant way. Consequently, companies are unable to maintain and renew their product portfolio in a strategically or commercially balanced way. The main objective of this study is to provide a data-driven product portfolio management (PPM) concept, which recognises and visualises in real-time and based on facts which company products are concurrently strategic and profitable, and what is the share of them in the product portfolio. This dissertation is a qualitative study to understand the topical area by the means combining literature review, company interviews, observations, and company internal material, to take steps towards data-driven decision-making in PPM. This study indicates that company data assets need to be combined and governed company-widely to realise the full potential of company strategic assets — the DATA. Data must be governed separately from business IT technology and beyond it. Beyond data and technology, the data-driven company culture must be adopted first. The data-driven PPM concept connects key business processes, business IT systems and several concepts, such as productization, product lifecycle management and PPM. The managerial implications include, that the shared understanding of the company products is needed, and the commercial and technical product structures are created accordingly, as they form the backbone of the company business as the skeleton to gather all product-related business-critical information for product-level profitability analysis. Also, product classification for strategic, supportive and non-strategic is needed, since the strategic nature of the product can change during the entire product lifecycle, e.g. due to the technology obsolescence, disruptive innovations by competitors, or for any other reason
Tiivistelmä Tuotteet ja palvelut ovat yrityksille kriittisiä, sillä ne luovat perustan yritysten taloudelliselle menestykselle. Kaksikymmentä prosenttia yrityksen tuotteista edustaa tyypillisesti noin kahdeksaakymmentä prosenttia myyntimääristä. Siitä huolimatta tuoteporfoliopäätöksiin — kuinka strategisesti uudistetaan yrityksen tuotetarjoomaa — liittyy tunteita, lemmikkituotteita ja kuka-huutaa-kovimmin -mentaliteettia faktojen, numeroiden ja kvantitatiivisten analyysien puuttuessa. Kannattavuutta mitataan ja raportoidaan tällä hetkellä yritystasolla, ja yritykset eivät näyttäisi pystyvän mittaamaan tuotetason kannattavuutta johdonmukaisesti. In 1999, Sweden was the first country in the world to criminalize the buying, but not the selling, of sexual services. This law is based on the ideological stance that transactional sex is to be understood as men’s violence against women. Since 1999, however, various studies have shown that not only women sell sex, but that a large number of sex workers are men and transgender. The aim of this study is to investigate how Sweden’s national board of health and welfare (Socialstyrelsen) constructs and presents the gender and sexuality of individuals who are engaged in transactional sex. Educational materials on transactional sex, created by Socialstyrelsen and aimed at health care professionals who work with said individuals, have been processed using critical discourse analysis as elaborated by Fairclough. In this educational material, individuals who engage in transactional sex are portrayed primarily as victims; as such, they lack agency to represent themselves and their situation to the various authorities. Furthermore, professionals who work in this field have asked for methods to talk about transactional sex with their clients, but the material does not supply any such methods or vocabulary. Instead, it is mainly focused on the clients’ need for therapy.

Abstract:
This thesis represents an attempt to improve the state of the art in our ability tounderstand and check object protocols, with a particular emphasis on concurrent pro-grams. Object protocols are the patterns of use imposed on clients of APIs in object-oriented programs. We show through an empirical study of open-source object-oriented programs that object protocols are quite common. We then present “Sync-or-Swim,” a methodology and suite of accompanying tools for checking at compile-time that object protocols are used and implemented correctly. This methodology isbased upon the existing access permissions method of alias control, which is hereextended to be sound in the face of shared-memory concurrency. The analysis isformalized as a type system for an object-oriented calculus, and then proven to befree from false-negatives using a proof of type safety. The type system is extendedwith parametric polymorphism, or “generics,” in order to increase its ability to checkcommonly occurring patterns. An implementation of the approach, a static analysisfor programs written in the Java programming language, is presented. This imple-mentation was used to perform a series of case studies whose goal was to evaluatethe ease of use, expressiveness and ability to verify commonly occurring patterns.These case studies are presented. Next, an approach and an associated tool for in-ferring access permission annotations is presented. This inference tool can reducethe burden of using our protocol-checking approach by automatically inferring therequired typing annotations. This inference is built upon a system of probabilisticconstraints, which allows the easy encoding of heuristics. Finally, an optimization ofsoftware transactional memory runtimes is presented. This optimization is enabledby the typing annotations required to use the concurrent protocol checker and canremove some of the overhead typically associated with transactional memory sys-tems. As a result of the work presented in this thesis, it is possible to guarantee theabsence of certain API usage errors even in concurrent programs, and to do so witha low burden on programmers. By adhering to such an approach, programmers canproduce more reliable software.

Cryptocurrencies has become a very hot topic recently, with Bitcoin being the most popular. The increase in interest has led to an incentive to create payment systems for the currency that makes it easier to use for day-to-day shopping. A lot of companies are inves- tigating possible solutions for credit cards that are used for cryptocurrencies. This thesis aims to present and perform a security analysis on an already created concept of a credit card payment system for Bitcoin. The security analysis is done in a systematical approach where the modules were analyzed with predetermined restrictions and assumptions. The restricitons and assumptions are then removed one-by-one to find potential threats in the system. The outcome of the analysis is then evaluated in an attempt to find possible im- plementation methods that would mitigate or prevent the discovered threats. The possible implementations are also evaluated in terms of how they would affect the system.

Whether in common law jurisdictions or in German civil law, the issue of pre-incorporation transactions has always been the subject of considerable controversy. Concerned with the promoters, third parties, the company and its shareholders, the law has found it difficult to balance these frequently conflicting interests without neglecting the need for clear and simple rules. Common law courts, sometimes excessively committed to legal principles, have even come up with absurd results.
This survey looks at the various attempts made in order to reconcile legal principles and business requirements--legislative in most common law jurisdictions, juridical in Germany. It will critically examine the approaches taken in Anglo-Saxon jurisdictions and compare their results and reasoning with the solution found in German law. It will be seen that even among closely related legal systems, results differ considerably. The survey will illustrate how established rules of law have turned out to be largely incapable of meeting the challenge of pre-incorporation transactions. From a comparative point of view, some suggestions will be made in order to achieve a solution that is more satisfactory in result and reasoning.

Transaction programs are comprised of read and write operations issued against the database. In a shared database system, one transaction program conflicts with another if it reads or writes data that another transaction program has written. This thesis presents a semi-automatic technique for pairwise static conflict analysis of embedded transaction programs. The analysis predicts whether a given pair of programs will conflict when executed against the database. There are several potential applications of this technique, the most obvious being transaction concurrency control in systems where it is not necessary to support arbitrary, dynamic queries and updates. By analyzing transactions in such systems before the transactions are run, it is possible to reduce or eliminate the need for locking or other dynamic concurrency control schemes.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the impact of transaction costs on stocks prices and examine the impact of institutional investors and high frequency traders (HFTs) on market quality and transaction costs. It is comprised of three chapters. Chapter 2 uses a clean and novel field experiment to study how stock prices of publicly listed companies respond to changes in transaction costs. Using the SEC's pilot program that increased the tick size for approximately 1,200 randomly chosen stocks, we find a decrease in market capitalization of $7 billion for stocks affected by the larger tick size relative to a control group. We find that the increase in the present value of transaction costs accounts for a small percentage of the price decrease. We study channels of price variation due to changes in expected returns: investor horizon, liquidity risk, and information risk. The evidence suggests that trading frictions affect the cost of capital. Chapter 3 examines the effects of multimarket high-frequency trading (HFT) activity on liquidity co-movements across different markets. Multimarket trading by HFTs connects individual markets in a single network, which should induce stronger network-wide liquidity co-movements. We use the staggered introduction of an alternative trading platform, Chi-X, in European equity markets as our instrument for an exogenous increase in multimarket HFT activity. Consistent with our predictions, we find that liquidity co-movements within the aggregate network of European markets significantly increase after the introduction of Chi-X and even exceed liquidity co-movements within the home market. They are especially strong in down markets and for stocks with a higher intensity of HFT trading in the post-Chi-X period. Chapter 4 studies optimality of trade execution by institutional trading desks. We document the presence of negative autocorrelation in intraday stock return and show that the temporary price pressure is larger at the beginning and the end of the day. Institutional trading volume exhibits similar intraday pattern. We relate the periodity of price pressure to trading desks' performance using a proprietary database of institutional investor trades. We find that execution quality is the worst at the end of the day yet institutional trading volume is also surprisingly high. Poorer performing brokers in terms of execution shortfall trade more in the last hour of the day, have a higher execution cost at the end of the day, and carry out less order splitting at the end of the day. Our findings suggest that intraday price pressure stems from end of the day clustering of under-performing trading desks strategies results in higher trading costs and poorer execution quality. A trading strategy exploiting this intraday predictability yields a monthly return of 16.11%. Our results have implications on the impact of broker selection and execution strategy on trading costs.

Bitcoin is a famous decentralized electronic currency system with a blockchain containing the complete transaction history publically at each node. The peers or nodes generate transactions and broadcast them to the network. Miners are those nodes that collects the transactions and try to generate block so database is updated by miners and it is then shared to all the nodes in the network in the form of blockchain. Bitcoin addresses are used to transfer the amounts in the network for transactions. A block is a collection of transactions and proof-of-work. A Miner that solves and inserts proof-of-work first in the block broadcast the block to the network. All nodes or peers add new blocks on top of previous blocks. The blockchain needs to be analyzed further with different approaches for the scalability point of view. Blockchain analysis under different heuristics can help to study in depth structure of pseudo-anonymity of bitcoin. Clustering and categories with blockchain data plays an important role to get to know useful information about blockchain. It can also help to extract the deep intelligence about the users and the network activity. Clustering concept in Artificial Intelligence is different from clustering concepts in data mining. Pairwise dominant sets method due to of its more generalized approach makes dominant set or a cluster in the form of maximal clique which can then be applied to the edge weighted graphs. These weights are used to calclute the similarity. The affinity between the nodes in the same set is higher than those which are external to that set. Pairwise dominant set clustering can work with both directed graphs and undirected graphs with a slight modification in replicator dynamic system equation. In this thesis blockchain data has been analyzed with dominant set clustering method and the clustering results are evaluated with the results obtained from other clustering techniques. The scalability issues with blockchain has been discussed. The behavior of nodes and their strategies is discussed with game theoretic point of view. The work contribution is about analysis of blockchain, performance evaluation with case studies. The work is concluded with the need of using the blockchain for non-critical or non-functional approaches as a potential future works.

The aim of this work is to identify the most common communication errors in terms of transactional analysis taken from selected levels of management of medical facility, which undermine the social interaction at work, and analyse their causes and impact on the behaviour and experience of parties involved. Part of the work is a set of recommendations for the prevention and elimination of these barriers. For these goals to be met, I have developed questionnaires, particularly for top management, and especially for middle management, where the respondents assess themselves on how often they face barriers in the workplace and the impact of these barriers on their behaviour and experience. Their responses are processed in charts by allocation criteria. Communication theories and the barriers related to the identified data give an idea of how the top management of this medical facility (and possibly at other medical facilities of similar size and structure) should communicate with senior consultants with care. The contribution of this work should be to improve communication and achieve not only greater satisfaction for all employees, but also increase productivity during business hours. For this to transpire, it is first necessary to increase communication, especially the knowledge of effective communication, then accept their mistakes and make a constant effort to eliminate them. Some important basic concepts in communication, transactional, barriers of communication and removing communication barriers are clarified in the theoretical part. The practical part is focused on the environment of unnamed hospital. The most commonly met crossed transactions in the workplace and their impact on the behaviour and experience are shown and described there.

The Psychotherapeutic Contract and Drivers are both concepts of Transactional Analysis, theory initiated by Eric Beme to solve the problems his clients had. Taking into consideration the five different Drivers that Taibi Kahler described and using a Psychotherapeutic Contract based on the Transactional Analysis theories, 150 cases have been studied, identifying the basic Driver of each patient with Holloway's Life Script Questionnaire, establishing a Psychotherapeutic Contract objective and checking out if the patient's initial demand was solved once the Driver was changed. The results of the study showed how using the Psychotherapeutic Contract, Drivers can be changed and by changing the basic Driver, the patient's initial demand can also be solved.
