Abstract:
Structural biology studies performed inside cells can capture molecular machines in action within their native context. In this work, we developed an integrative in-cell structural approach using the genome-reduced human pathogen Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We combined whole-cell cross-linking mass spectrometry, cellular cryo–electron tomography, and integrative modeling to determine an in-cell architecture of a transcribing and translating expressome at subnanometer resolution. The expressome comprises RNA polymerase (RNAP), the ribosome, and the transcription elongation factors NusG and NusA. We pinpointed NusA at the interface between a NusG-bound elongating RNAP and the ribosome and propose that it can mediate transcription-translation coupling. Translation inhibition dissociated the expressome, whereas transcription inhibition stalled and rearranged it. Thus, the active expressome architecture requires both translation and transcription elongation within the cell.

Abstract:
Our aim with this paper is firstly to survey and outline common translation strategies used in realia words and expressions from Mongolian into English language and secondly, to propose an order of the translation strategies according to their equivalence based on literature translations. In this study, 32 Mongolian short stories translated by foreign and Mongolian translators into English were involved. We collected strategies for realia translation and analyzed how often they are applied in literature translations. Findings of the study showed that 11 strategies (transcribing, calque, neologism, synonymy, explanation, reformulation or equivalence, international word, adjective, modulation, notes and couplets) were offered by most of translation researchers, out of which 6 strategies (transcribing, calque, synonymy, explanatory, reformulation or equivalence, and couplets) are often used in Mongolian into English literature translation. Moreover, translators are using several couplets (transcribing & explanatory, transcribing & calque and equivalence & explanatory) for dealing with some cultural words. In connection with the 32 Mongolian short story translation into English, we attempted to make an order of 4 translation strategies due source language (SL) cultural words, translated by a target (TL). This order starts with reformulation or equivalence, and follows synonymy as well as explanation and ends with couplet.

Abstract:
The conventional paradigm in speech translation starts with a speech recognition step to generate transcripts, followed by a translation step with the automatic transcripts as input. To address various shortcomings of this paradigm, recent work explores end-to-end trainable direct models that translate without transcribing. However, transcripts can be an indispensable output in practical applications, which often display transcripts alongside the translations to users. We make this common requirement explicit and explore the task of jointly transcribing and translating speech. Although high accuracy of transcript and translation are crucial, even highly accurate systems can suffer from inconsistencies between both outputs that degrade the user experience. We introduce a methodology to evaluate consistency and compare several modeling approaches, including the traditional cascaded approach and end-to-end models. We find that direct models are poorly suited to the joint transcription/translation task, but that end-to-end models that feature a coupled inference procedure are able to achieve strong consistency. We further introduce simple techniques for directly optimizing for consistency, and analyze the resulting trade-offs between consistency, transcription accuracy, and translation accuracy. 1

Abstract:
This paper presents a novel approach to facilitate Malayalam speech-to-text transcription and subsequent translation into English text. The proposed system leverages advancements in speech recognition, natural language processing, and machine translation techniques. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through a practical implementation and evaluation. Introduction: The ability to accurately transcribe spoken language and translate it into other languages has numerous applications in today's digital world. However, the development of such systems for languages with complex structures, such as Malayalam, presents unique challenges. In this paper, we propose a solution to address these challenges by combining state-of-the-art technologies in speech recognition and machine translation. Literature Review: Previous studies have explored various approaches to speech-to-text transcription and machine translation. However, few have focused specifically on the Malayalam language. Existing systems often struggle with accurately transcribing and translating Malayalam due to its complex morphology and syntax. Methodology: Our approach consists of several key steps: Speech Recognition : We employ the SpeechRecognition library to transcribe spoken Malayalam into text. Text Preprocessing: The transcribed text undergoes preprocessing, including tokenization and normalization, using the IndicNLP library. Translation: The preprocessed text is translated into English using a custom-built translation model implemented with CTranslate2 and SentencePiece. Results: We evaluated our system using a dataset of spoken Malayalam sentences. The system achieved a high accuracy in speech recognition and produced fluent translations into English. Discussion: Our results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach in accurately transcribing and translating spoken Malayalam. However, certain challenges remain, such as handling dialectal variations and improving translation quality for complex sentences. Conclusion: In conclusion, we have presented a novel approach to Malayalam speech-to-text transcription and text-to-English translation. Abstract:
This study aims to identify and analyze translation techniques and translation ideology used by translators in translating subtitle texts in the film Olaf's Frozen adventure. In this study using descriptive qualitative research with data in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences containing translation techniques in the subtitle text of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure. The data collection technique in this study was to use documents and archives, by watching the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure and reading the available subtitles in both the source language and the target language and transcribing. In analyzing the data the steps taken by the researcher are watching and reading the subtitle text of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure, analyzing translation techniques and translation ideology, and finally drawing conclusions.
 Based on the results of the analysis, there are 12 translation techniques used by translators in translating the subtitles of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure from 133 data. Based on the frequency of use of these techniques are: reduction technique 17, borrowing 9, literal translation 27, equivalent 24, calculus 14, transposition 11, amplification 5, particulation 2, linguistic compression 17, modulation 5, adaptation 1, and generalization 1. applied by translators in translating the subtitles of the film Olaf's Frozen Adventure is the ideology of domestication.

This article inquires into the motives of the participants in the recording, transcribing, translating, editing and publishing of Aboriginal narrative. The motivation of Aboriginal communicators, at the outset simple altruism, has evolved onto a pressing need to bear witness to past and present wrongs perpetrated against them by various agents of the dominant society. Social scientists’ motivations are equally complex. Most of the social sciences, and particularly anthropology, practice translation. Anthropology has elaborated translation theories that betray a general unease with how and why anthropologists translate. Anthropological translation differs from that of other disciplines in that when anthropologists translate oral and written “texts,” their ultimate aim is in fact the “translation” of the cultures that produced them. Abstract Automatic subtitling is the task of automatically translating the speech of audiovisual content into short pieces of timed text, i.e., subtitles and their corresponding timestamps. The generated subtitles need to conform to space and time requirements, while being synchronized with the speech and segmented in a way that facilitates comprehension. Given its considerable complexity, the task has so far been addressed through a pipeline of components that separately deal with transcribing, translating, and segmenting text into subtitles, as well as predicting timestamps. In this paper, we propose the first direct speech translation model for automatic subtitling that generates subtitles in the target language along with their timestamps with a single model. Our experiments on 7 language pairs show that our approach outperforms a cascade system in the same data condition, also being competitive with production tools on both in-domain and newly released out-domain benchmarks covering new scenarios.

Abstract:
This study examines the translation strategies and accuracy of idiomatic expressions in the Indonesian subtitles of the Wednesday series. Specifically, it analysed the methods and effectiveness of translating culturally nuanced idioms, highlighting their role in maintaining linguistic and cultural integrity. Using a qualitative method, data were collected by systematically watching the series, transcribing the target language audio, and identifying idiomatic expressions in the source language. Idioms were categorized based on Fernando and Makkai's typology, evaluated using Peter Newmark’s translation methods, and analyzed with Jan Pedersen's strategies. Accuracy was assessed using Nababan's framework. The study identified four types of idioms: pure idioms, semi-idioms, literal idioms, and phrasal verb idioms. Among the 64 idioms analyzed, 25 were pure idioms, 13 semi-idioms, 9 literal idioms, and 17 phrasal verb idioms. Translators employed five of the seven strategies outlined by Pedersen: generalization, direct translation, omission, substitution, and specification, with generalization being most frequent. The subtitle translations achieved high accuracy, with 45 accurate translations, 13 almost accurate, and 6 inaccurate. These findings underline the translators’ proficiency in maintaining the semantic and cultural integrity of idiomatic expressions. However, future research should address limitations such as the scope of data and potential subjective interpretations. This study contributes to translation studies by offering insights into idiom translation in audio-visual media, emphasizing strategies for achieving accuracy and cultural relevance.

O estágio proporcionou uma oportunidade ao mestrando para adquirir novas competências e noções relacionadas com o mercado de tradução e legendagem profissional. Este relatório tem como objetivo debruçar-se sobre os problemas inerentes na tradução e legendagem de conteúdo audiovisual e apresentar possíveis estratégias e soluções através de alguns exemplos de projetos realizados durante o estágio. Será ainda realizada uma reflexão sobre a tradução audiovisual enquanto disciplina e a importância da legendagem dentro desta área.<br>This report will describe the curricular internship done in Sintagma Traduções. The internship involved a plethora of translation, subtitling and transcription projects for approximately three months. With the internship the student was able to acquire and expand new skills and notions regarding the professional area and market of subtitling. This report will also discuss the problems that arose with the translation and subtitling of audiovisual content and will present possible responses and strategies by using specific examples from the internship projects. Furthermore, it will also reflect upon the state of audiovisual translation and how important subtitling is within this field of translation.

Abstract:
In order to uncover the cultural beliefs that motivate the narrator and his audience, an anthropological approach is used. Questions that recur during analysis of the narratives, such as the transmission of the narratives, notions of time, and differing viewpoints are discussed. Problems arising from translating and transcribing the narratives are touched on. Lastly, this chapter examines issues relating to fieldwork in this study: the position of the anthropologist, ethical concerns, and the challenges of multi-sited fieldwork.

This chapter analyzes Virginia Woolf's 1925 essay “On Not Knowing Greek” as part of the longer Victorian legacy of Ladies' Greek and places it within the context of Woolf's earlier Greek studies. Focusing on Woolf's Agamemnon notebook, the chapter examines how the strange utterance of Cassandra (otototoi, a series of stuttering syllables that sounds foreign to the ear) appears in Greek letters on the page and also how it was made to appear in two dramatic productions staged in ancient Greek at Cambridge University in 1900 and in 1921. In the process of transcribing and translating Cassandra's utterance, the chapter shows that Woolf confronts the mad literality of dead Greek letters: a scene of reading that is repeated again and again in translations of Greek tragedy by other women, both before and after Woolf.

Genetics is living proof that complex information can be encoded through systems using molecular recognition. Genetic systems have a vast array of copying, proof–reading and editing tools available to them to prevent errors when replicating, transcribing and translating data (although occasional errors — mutations — are essential for evolutionary progress). These tools can be commandeered by scientists to manipulate the genome. Moore's law states that computer power will double every two years. New technologies, such as genetic and molecular computers, are needed to ensure this law holds true.

Abstract In the introduction to the first edition of his collection of tales (published in 1947), the late Birago Diop explains the circumstance in which he came to produce the work that has secured for him an enduring place in the corpus of modern African literature. Ascribing the tales to the family griot, Amadou Koumba, Diop downplays his own participation in their composition; he makes the modest claim that his role was limited to transcribing the tales as he heard them from the griot in their original versions in Wolof and translating them into French so as to make them accessible to a wider audience of readers. It is this condition of their gen eration as written texts that is reflected in the titles of the first two collections, Les contes d’Amadou Koumba and Les nouveaux contes d’Amadou Koumba. The griot’s name is conjoined to the material that Diop presents as a way of insisting upon its true provenance.
