Abstract:
A principal distributes an indivisible good to budget‐constrained agents when both valuation and budget are agents' private information. The principal can verify an agent's budget at a cost. The welfare‐maximizing mechanism can be implemented via a two‐stage scheme. First, agents report their budgets, receive cash transfers, and decide whether to enter a lottery over the good. Second, recipients of the good can sell it on a resale market but must pay a sales tax. Low‐budget agents receive a higher cash transfer, pay a lower price to enter the lottery, and face a higher sales tax. They are also

Adjustable autonomy refers to entities dynamically varying their own autonomy, transferring decision-making control to other entities (typically agents transferring control to human users) in key situations. Determining whether and when such transfers-of-control should occur is arguably the fundamental research problem in adjustable autonomy. Previous work has investigated various approaches to addressing this problem but has often focused on individual agent-human interactions. Unfortunately, domains requiring collaboration between teams of agents and humans reveal two key shortcomings of the

However, the existing agents are trained using hand-crafted expert features and expert capabilities. Notwithstanding these refinements, no previous single system

Gene Transfer Agents (GTAs) are phage-like pthesiss that are produced by many alpha proteobacteria in late stationary growth phase and are capable of transferring chromosomal genes (termed "constitutive transduction"). Examination of alpha proteobacterial genomic sequences indicated widespread occurrence of GTA-like elements. The goal of this study was to investigate gene transfer potential of GTAs of marine alpha proteobacteria in culture as well as in natural marine environments. Another goal was to determine the potential of bacterial symbionts from zooxanthellae and coral to genetically

Methylphosphonic acid (MPA) is the final degradant of many chemical warfare nerve agents (CWAs). Its detection in environmental and biological samples is a potential indicator of nerve agent use. Due to its high polarity and low volatility, analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) requires the derivatisation of MPA into a more volatile and less polar species. Currently, to derivatise MPA, it is typically necessary to perform the time-consuming and error-inducing water removal process prior to derivatisation. The ability to exert control over polymerisation reactions is of great importance industrially. Chain transfer agents (CT As) are a classical method for controlling average molecular weight of polymer samples produced in reactions. Generally small organic molecules with a labile (abstractable) atom/group, CTAs can also be used to introduce functionality into a polymer chain.
