Full textImprovement of power density is a bigchallenge for embedded electric vehicle chargers.Goal of the study is to reduce the volume of the DCDCcharger which contains a bulky transformer. Thekey point is to use wide band gap transistors (GaN) toincrease the charger switching frequency. High switchingfrequency can improve power density but theinconvenient is the increase of switching and transformerlosses. The PhD dissertation is organized inthree steps. First step is the definition of a charger topology. This topology is optimized to reduce transformerlosses. Second part of the study is the theoreticaldesign of a high power density transformer. A completetransformer parametric model is presented withFinite Element Analysis. Third part present the prototypeand test results of the charger DC-DC. Electricalbehavior, volume and efficiency results are discussedin this part.Universit ´

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study and design of a soft switching high power converter for transport applications and especially heavy vehicles. First part is dedicated to the choice of the converter structure and a detailed behavioural study. Parameters of this converter has been identified and quantified such as 18 kW as nominal power, 400 V as output voltage and 67 V as input voltage from a DC fixed source. Switching output frequency has been fixed to 40 kHz. Second chapter will present the study of a high frequency transformer integrated into the this converter. A behavioural model of the transformer has been defined in order to perform simulations by means of SABER software. Two technologies of transformers are used for this case : as a first classical one, a wounded transformer is used and for the second one planar technology is tested. The author validates these models by simulation and experimental results. In the third chapter, the command strategy of this converter is detailed with the driving of the 16 electronic switches and also constraints on the signals in order to perform a good behaviour in soft switching techniques. The fourth part presents various models developed in order to simulate this converter by SABER software. Linear switching semiconductor MOSFET and IGBT models have been defined. A study and a proposal of a brushless DC motor model with trapezoidal back emf are detailed. The model is then written using MAST programming language. Finally various command blocks have been described. In the fifth chapter, the author presents experimental test results which has been performed on an test bench but for electrical powers up to9 kW with passive loads (RL) and active load (brushless DC motor). Various tests have been proposed to validate this structure with special attention to efficiency and losses under different load conditions. As a conclusion the author shows the interesting case when more than one motor is used and the electrical energy will be fed to the motors by means of AC high frequency energy distribution

Full textDuring the re-energization of the auxiliaries of a nuclear or hydraulic power plant, the most dangerous step is the re-energization of the power transformer, because of the temporary overvoltage and inrush currents. These transients phenomenon causes undesirable effects for both network and for the power transformer (electrodynamic forces over the windings, the magnetic circuit’s vibration, noise and the premature aging of the transformer). The goal of these thesis is to suggest new methodologies allowing us to evaluate unknown parameters (the residual flux’s values in the magnetic circuit before transformer’s energization). According to the latest problems in order to evaluate it (no direct method, derivation, voltage measurement error, etc) two new methods based on the previous magnetization of the magnetic circuit (prefluxing method) and on the leakage flux measurement of the magnetic circuit (direct measurement of the flux by measuring the magnetic induction method) are proposed

Full textThis thesis concerns the study and the rating of a high voltage multicellular converter with an intermediate medium frequency stage dedicated to railway traction. The objective is to reduce the weight and the volume of the AC-DC conversion stage which is implemented in railway engines running on 25kV-50Hz or 15kV-16Hz2/3 railways. Reduction on weight and size of the AC-DC converter may be applied on multiple unit trains where the transformer causes room loss for passengers and on locomotives and high speed trains where the axle load is limited. On one hand high voltage switches are required in order to minimize the number of cells used to build the converter. On the other hand, reducing the size and the weight of the transformer requires a high switching frequency, causing high commutation losses. To achieve soft switching conditions with high voltage semiconductors, the proposed topology is based on an association of dual structures. Each elementary converter combines a controlled turn-off voltage source inverter and a controlled turn-on current source inverter. In order to estimate the efficiency of the new topology, a prototype of one elementary cell working at 280 kVA, was built at the Power Electronics Associated Research Laboratory (PEARL). The switches are standard 6.5 kV/200A IGBTs modules. Soft-switching tests, in real operating conditions, allow evaluating IGBTs and diodes switching losses. Thanks to these results, it is possible to find the structure operating limits and to size the transformer considering the trade-off between the system efficiency and the transformer weight

Full textThe objective of the CONCIGI-HT project (Compact AC/DC converter with Integrated High Voltage Galvanic Insulation) is to increase the efficiency of traction drives while reducing the mass and volume of the AC/DC conversion. To do that, the part low-frequency transformer - rectifier is replaced by a multi-converter topology, directly connected to the high voltage power supply and incorporating medium frequency transformers (several kHz). This thesis relates more particularly to the characterization and implementation of high voltage semiconductors in conversion topologies with intermediate medium frequency link. The study is performed on the basis of a traction drive of 2 MW operating on a 25 kV/50 Hz power supply. The first chapter presents the state of the art of the Automotrice à Grande Vitesse (AGV) recently produced by ALSTOM. The traction drive of this vehicle is used as a reference for the study of new topologies with medium frequency transformer. The second chapter first describes the structure of a conventional traction drive and then presents two multicellular topologies with medium frequency transformer applicable to railway traction (the indirect structure with PWM rectifier and DC/DC resonant converter and the direct topology combining dual converters). The advantages and disadvantages of these topologies are highlighted. The third chapter deals with the implementation and soft switching characterization of 6.5 kV Silicon components in both topologies presented above. Two test benches, representing a basic conversion stage, as well as specific drivers dedicated to the soft switching, has been made. They allow the study of semiconductors in nominal operating conditions (3.6 kV / 100 A). The fourth chapter presents the implementation and characterization of silicon carbide components (SiC). For this, power modules based on 10 kV chips (MOSFET and Diodes) have been achieved. The experimental results obtained on test benches made in the previous chapter, show a significant reduction in losses and demonstrate the viability of the dual converter topology for a 25 kV/50 Hz application. The conclusion presents the first design of an elementary block and gains in mass and volume as well as the energy savings that can be achieved compared to a conventional structure

Full textThis work is about the short-circuit current increase, inside the harbor’s electrical networkthat supplies the electrical grid of each vessel docked in port. We analyze the system’srequirements, the load demands, the transformer and finally the modeling of the convertersinvolved. Armed with this understanding of the system, various solutions like powerelectronics devices or passive equipments were investigated, simulated and evaluated in termsof performance requirements. To increase the short-circuit current, we provide a noveltransformer with two primary windings. The purpose of this solution is to change theconfiguration of the transformer when the short circuit is detected by changing thetransformation ratio. A real-time hybrid test bench has been build in order to test the solution. The real-time tests have yielded good and encouraging results, supporting the theory. Finally, further studies under various scenarios were conducted in offline simulations

Full textIn modern power transformers, oil circulation through cooling ducts of the coils (on cellulosic surfaces) create static charges. These charges are generated at the interface solid/liquid by oil flow which carries a part of the double layer, resulting of the preferential absorption of negative ions by the cellulosic surface. Therefore, the paper is negatively charged and the oil positively. This static electrification phenomenon can lead to he breakdown of large power transformers. In the first part of the report, we present the experimental arrangements developed in laboratory in order to study the fundamental characteristics of charge separation at the interfaces as well as a method allowing the measurement of the charging tendency of insulating oils. The aim of this research is the understanding of the influence of some parameters on static electrification, for different insulating materials used in power transformers, such as physical and chemical properties of the solid and liquid, velocity, temperature, oil humidity, roughness of pressboard and additives. The influence of oil ageing, temperature gradients and humidity transfers are also studied. An important part of this work is devoted to the influence of static electrification on the dielectric strength of insulating materials. The second part of this report deals with the studies carried out on real transformers on the influence of the major parameters of static electrification : the temperature, the applied voltage, the oil flow and the nature of the oil. The predicted zones of charge separation and the conditions allowing a maximum level of static electrification are studied. For this, we have equipped a transformer with an exceptional set-up allowing to evaluate the safety margin of shell type transformers towards the static electrification phenomena. By using a simple model, we calculate the current and the charge generated in shell type transformers by the streaming oil

Full textFlow electrification phenomena in power transformers take place at the oil-cellulosic material interface. Oil flowing past the pressboard generates electrical charges at the interface. This phenomenon can lead to electrical discharges and, in the worst cases, to the transformer failure. To protect power transformers from this phenomenon, the materials involved in the electric charge generation have to be studied in detail. The physical chemical nature of the cellulosic pulp used to manufacture the pressboard has an influence on the electrical charge generation. Several additives, incorporated in the oil or in the cellulosic material, were tested to improve the understanding of flow electrification and find a remedy against it. Considering all the results obtained, interpretations conceming the physical chemical phenomena taking place at the interface have been proposed

Full textThis thesis relates to the assessment of the efficiency of preventive maintenance (PM) and of the corrective maintenance (CM) over the electrical network’s equipments. This assessment has to allow the consideration of the prior knowledge of experts on the behaviour of certain devices. The prior opinion is here necessary because of the considered framework which involves reliable equipments and thus few data of breakdowns to be run for the inference. We propose in this thesis a new approach for inferring the efficiency of CM with addition of prior information (named Méthode A). It leans on several results of recent works led in the field of arithmetic reduction of the age models (ARA). This method has to allow the use of prior data in the proposed model, and avoid some limitations inherent to the classical Bayesian approach. Although the tests of Méthode A present good properties of estimation, we notice that its generalization in the observation of a process of minimal CM and imperfect PM (ARA1) was not immediate during the led tests. We also present in these works a method, named Méthode B, used for the inference of parameters of the proposed model in the case of minimal CM and imperfect PM (ARA1)

Full textCurrent transformers are generally connected to small impedance. If it is not the case, the flux density and the magnetizing current are not negligIble. This report deals with this case. More over the current may he non sinusoidal and its mean value May he different than zero. To take account these specificity an anaIytical model is developed. In a first time the hehavior of the assembly (current transformer and its load) with sinusoidal currents is studied. An non linear, analytical, model is developed. The importance of the leakage flux is evaluated In a second time the model is extended to any type of current' s wave form. The frequency' s variations of the magnetic characteristic are taken into account In a third time the non linearity of the magnetic material is modelised At this time the hehavior of the transformer submitted to any type of current May he computed. This report is closed by a study of magnetic characterization using a non symmetrical current

Full textThe widespread use of nonlinear loads in the industry is the source of several disturbances in the electrical network. Thus the current harmonics leads to increase the losses due to proximity and skin effects in the transformer windings. Therefore, the transformers become more sensitive to overheating. In order to avoid a dielectric failure as well as a premature ageing, the hot spot temperature must not exceed the prescribed insulating value. However, for a given nonlinear load it is difficult to predict the electromagnetic and thermal state of the transformer. The main objective of this research is to characterize the harmonic behaviour of the power transformer to prevent, at the design stage, these unexpected troubles. A first work presented in this thesis deals with an analytical and axisymétric method to compute the winding current density distribution. Then, the conductor layers are homogenised and a steady state thermal finite element calculation is applied to obtain the temperature map. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on a medium power dry type transformer loaded by an innovative experimental installation. A second model is based on a new analytical and numerical method. First a 3D finite element method (FEM) is applied to compute the magnetic field in the free and the iron spaces. This non-linear calculation is combined with a mixed form of the electrical circuit equation. Then a 3D thermal FEM allows to show the temperature distribution in the transformer. Finally this coupling model is applied to a small power distribution transformer with embedded sensors to verify the overheating effect of non sinusoidal currents

Full textThis work is a study of CMUT (Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transduer)based acoustical transformers as a step in the development of insulating components in semiconductor switches control chain. CMUT transducers being electromechanical systems (MEMS), their monolithic integration with semiconductor switches is full of interesting perspectives . The proposed architecture consists of two CMUTs layered on each side of a silicon substrate. A computational tool was designed to predict the behaviour of the transformer. Measurement protocols of the power efficiency of the constructed transformers were set up and allowed to quantify the prototypes' performances (A 32 % efficiency is currently reached, with improvements attainable up to 60 %). Exploring the results of the developed model, validated by bench measurements, allowed to determine the current limits of the transformers as well as perspectives of improvement

Full textThe alarming forecasts of natural resources encourage worldwide the search for alternative solutions. Hence recycling becomes a major challenge for society, especially for petroleum products such as transformer oils. This study is based on finding new ways of valorizing these oils, which is a complex problem that must meet the economic, political, regulatory, environmental and scientific constraints and challenges. A critical analysis of the competitive environment, of the potential market segments, as well as physic-chemical properties of these oils is the basis to determine new ways of revalorization. In this study, we attempted to determine the suitability and performance characteristics of transformer oil regenerated to the specific requirements of the machining and shaping of metals. The wear of materials under boundary lubrication and beyond this regime, is a complex area of study combining mechanics, solid state physics, chemistry and thermodynamics of irreversible processes. In this study the performance of new, used ( polluted by polychlorinated biphenyls ) and regenerated oils with close physic-chemical and rheological properties are compared in scratch test and tribometric with a ductile cast iron, which is friction material widely used in the transportation industry. A sequence of surface analysis techniques is developed to characterize the morphologies of the surfaces and quantify the resulting deformation of the friction material. The complementarity of scratch an tribometric tests for the study of the performance of hydrocarbons in different stress states, respectively compression and shear, reveals the good performances of regenerated transformer oils. This study has allowed discriminating the behavior of various origins oils under conditions of extreme friction, and specifically quantifying the performance of the regenerated oils through the determination of classical tribological parameters such as rate of deformation, friction coefficients or time to seizure. The final composition of the regenerated oils, ie the length and nature of the hydrocarbon chains, the water and PCBs content and the presence of polar molecules, determines its tribological behavior. Thus, the study showed that the performance of regenerated oils increases with the water and PCB content. Following this positive assessment on the regenerated oil performances in case of abrasive and catastrophic wear, machining and shaping of metals can be identified as a new way for regenerated transformers oils

Full textThis thesis concerns the study of the propagation of the signal of power line communication (PLC) in the distribution power network. In order to simulate the phenomena, the HF models of the elements were elaborated, mainly for transformer MV/LV. After a bibliographical study of the models of the HF transformer, we carried out many external measurements on two real transformers 20/0. 4kV of medium power in order to obtain their impedances of transfer in the range 100Hz - 10MHz. Equivalent circuits wera proposed, one in MF and another in HF. Measurements and the necessary methods to determine the characteristics of transfer of signals MF-HF through the transformer were synthesized and presented. Then, the models HF of the other principal elements met in the distribution network are analyzed. Finally, we implemented the models to simulate with EMTP the propagation of the signals HF in a real distribution network

Full textThe research presented in this thesis focuses on the study of interlaminar short circuits, whose presence in a magnetic core can cause additional loss which will deteriorate the performance of the transformer. The study is carried out along two main axes: first, the detection of interlaminar short circuits, second, their modelling. The first axis evaluates the possibilities for detection, with the objective to provide tools which can help to optimise the manufacturing process of transformers. The second axis concerns the modelling of a short circuit, with a view to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved and also to enable an estimation of the worst-case short-circuit current and the worst-case power dissipation. Numerous artificial short circuits have been experimentally characterised. A procedure has been developed permitting the measurement of short-circuit currents by means of a miniaturised Rogowski coil, capable of measuring the current inside an interlaminar contact with a very small distance between the sheets. The experiments have led to an elementary model of the short circuit which is based on a Thévenin equivalent circuit. Variations of different parameters of the short circuit have permitted deducing empirical laws describing their influence on the elements of the equivalent circuit and thus to observe the impact of these parameters on the short-circuit current and the associated loss

Full textThese last years, applications using piezoelectric materials developed considerably. The application fields of these materials are numerous: structural vibration control, acoustic control, energy harvesting, piezoelectric transformers…. The LGEF sets of themes include adaptive system development containing electroactive materials with, in particular, the development of a technique called SSD (for Synchronized Switch Damping). This technique consists in a non linear processing of the voltage generated by piezoelectric elements. The work presented here consists in looking further into SSD techniques and adapting them to power density optimisation of piezoelectric transformers and to the structural vibration control of electronic boards. When applied to “piezoelectric transformers”, the non linear techniques experimentally show a clear improvement of the power density with, under certain conditions, an improvement of the power transfer efficiency. These enhancements are in agreement with theoretical predictions. Applied to structural vibration control of electronic boards, non-linear techniques raise the problem of the electromechanical coupling optimisation regarding the surface covered by the piezoelectric inserts. The work carried out in this field has made it possible to identify the main parameters for a global electromechanical coupling factor optimisation. Finally, a multimodal model has been developed: it made it possible to evaluate the multimodal effectiveness of various control laws with various complexities in order to compare them

Full textThe electrostatic charge generation due to oil flow through pressboard-made channels for power transformers cooling has been held to be responsible for several failures in the world during the last thirty years. Among the identified parameters influencing this rather unknown and complex phenomenon, the flow geometry and the leakage impedance of the charge accumulation areas appear to be determining factors. A prototype of a sensor, likely to be installed on a transformer, has been developed in parallel with the derivation of reliable and relevant parameters with regard to the phenomenon. Moreover, the researches engaged on the chemistry have made it possible: to underline the pressboard role, to identify the chemical species leading to charge generation and to establish two first remedies. The development of a module dedicated to the charged reactive species convection in a Computational Fluid Dynamics Software enable us to consider the simulation of the phenomenon inside a full scale transformer to predict electrostatic hazard

Full textThis PhD thesis deals the assessment method of the state of power transformers filled with oil. It brings a new approach by implementing classification methods and data mining dedicated to transformer maintenance. It proposes a strategy based on two new oil health indicators built from an adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). Two classifiers were built on a labeled learning database. The Naive Bayes classifier was retained for the detection of fault from gases dissolved in oil. A simple and efficient flowchart for evaluating the condition of transformers is proposed. It allows a quick analysis of the parameters resulting from physicochemical analyzes of oil and dissolved gases. Using unsupervised classification techniques through the methods of kmeans and fuzzy C-means allowed to reconstruct operating periods of a transformer, with some particular faults. It has also been demonstrated how these methods can be used as tool to help the maintenance of a group of transformers from available oil analysis data

Full textNowadays, to increase the application potential of high power pulsed machines, it is necessary to develop compact modulators able to deliver pulses in the range of several megawatts with duration of up to several hundred microseconds. This improvement requires the development of innovative structures whose purpose is to produce both average power and large peak power. Modulators studied in this thesis are based on the use of various transformers for the generation of very high power pulses. The AGIR project (French acronym for "Architecture for Rectangular High Pulse power generation") is achieved within the framework of a RAPID (Dual Innovation Support Regime) funded by the French Defense (DGA). The project is carried on by a collaboration with EFFITECH, a company specialized in pulsed powers. The goal is to develop two generators for two peak power ranges (up to 10MW for one and 1GW for the other). The first modulator "AGIR1" is based on the association of an AC-DC converter and 12 DC-DC resonant converters allowing the generation of several types of pulses (high current or high voltage) depending on the chosen configuration. The second modulator is based on the development of a four synchronized primary pulse transformer. Each primary is connected to a Blumlein pulse forming line triggered by a three-electrode pressurized spark gap. The synchronization of the four spark gaps is ensured by an innovative pulse generator with low jitter. The main difficulty of the work which was completed in the laboratory relies in the study of the different high-voltage transformers used (resonant or pulse) and the spark gap synchronization system. Each element constituting the system is studied and simulated electrostatically, electromagnetically or electrically before being realized and assembled. Trials punctuate the study to validate the recurrent operation with a suitable heat dissipation system

Full textThe discovery of High Critical Température superconductors in 1986 restarts the interest put on superconductivjty. Thèse materials arrived at a stage where their use in electrotechnical devices is possible. Nevertheless, it is essentia! to know precisely their AC losses in order to correctly design the devices. This is why we initially studied the AC losses in a superconductor. An analytical model applicable to a cylindrical geometry (windings) was developed and compared with a numerical model. We carried out expérimental measurements in order to compare thèse various models. For the European project READY, a single-phase 41 kVA HTC superconducting transformer was ernireiy designed on the electromagnetic. Thermal and mechanical levels. This transformer, entirely cold. Will be able to operate either in liquid nitrogen until around 65 K or in gas hélium if lower températures are needed. A pulsed tube will cool it. Many experiments were made to validate our choices and also to bring essential expérimental data like the cold iron losses or the thermal résistance contact. Finallv a ver.
