Abstract:
Low-code development has emerged as a transformative concept in both academia and the software industry, often discussed alongside model-driven engineering and domain-specific languages. Usability plays a critical role in low- code contexts, given that many users lack programming expertise. While grey literature frequently praises the high usability of low-code tools, this paper systematically reviews academic and industry research to understand the relationship between low-code development and usability. Using a formal search protocol, 38 relevant studies were analyzed to identify key usability factors and how users perceive these tools. Despite growing interest, no formal definition of low-code has been universally adopted. This paper proposes a definition, highlights usability's role, and identifies further research avenues to strengthen the field of low-code development. This article introduces Linguacodus, an innovative framework designed to tackle this challenge by deploying a dynamic pipeline that iteratively transforms natural language task descriptions into code through high-level data-shaping instructions. The core of Linguacodus is a fine-tuned large language model, empowered to evaluate diverse solutions for various problems and select the most fitting one for a given task. This article details the fine-tuning process and sheds light on how natural language descriptions can be translated into functional code. Linguacodus represents a substantial leap towards automated code generation, effectively bridging the gap between task descriptions and executable code. It holds great promise for advancing machine learning applications across diverse domains. Additionally, we propose an algorithm capable of transforming a natural description of an ML task into code with minimal human interaction. In extensive experiments on a vast machine learning code dataset originating from Kaggle, we showcase the effectiveness of Linguacodus. The investigations highlight its potential applications across diverse domains, emphasizing its impact on applied machine learning in various scientific fields.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the structure of meaning and the embedded cultural values in nature-themed feature texts composed by students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education program. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study adopts a semiotic text analysis design. Data were collected through documentation of the feature texts and semi-structured interviews. The analysis was guided by five semiotic codes: hermeneutic, semic, symbolic, proairetic, and cultural. The findings revealed that the students’ feature texts consistently incorporate all five semiotic codes, each contributing to the enrichment of narrative structure and depth of textual meaning. The hermeneutic code generates curiosity and suspense; the semic code conveys connotative meanings; the symbolic code represents cultural and spiritual symbolism; the proairetic code structures the narrative flow; and the cultural code reflects local cultural values. Moreover, the texts exhibit significant values such as aesthetic awareness, ecological consciousness, cultural preservation, and spiritual reflection. This study concluded that students’ feature texts function as a medium of personal and cultural expression, while simultaneously serving as a tool for critical literacy. These texts support transformative learning and foster cultural identity reinforcement within educational contexts.

The paper examines which rhetorical codes are implemented by periphrases in the poetry of Joseph Brodsky. The understanding of the rhetorical code is connected with the symbolic perception of artistic images created in a poetic text. The study of the rhetorical code involves the analysis of the influencing potential of stylistic means, taking into account the genre features of the text material. The expressive and pictorial possibilities that rhetorical techniques possess are also due to a thematic factor, a communicative situation – a political event, a love twist, a historical action. The interpretation of the code contributes to the establishment of communicative relations between the addressee and the addressee, the author and the reader, thereby comprehending the pragmatic meaning of the work of speech. In the lyrics of Joseph Brodsky, saturated with allusions and reminiscences, the periphrasis becomes a semantic, transmission and transformative buffer that expands the cultural space of the work. The rhetorical codes of reinforcement, substitution and isolation help to understand the emotional state of the lyrical hero, the decryption of these codes explains the causes of frustration, loss and feelings of orphanhood. The article emphasises that the basis of the rhetorical code is the national mentality and linguistic personality of the author of the work; therefore, when interpreting the code, the context of history was taken into account when the poems were created. The rhetorical code is part of the cultural code. Free periphrases, which are often used in the poems of Joseph Brodsky, allow the reader to see a unique, special picture of the poet’s world.

Abstract Protein ubiquitylation regulates numerous pathways, and the diverse information encoded by various forms of ubiquitylation is known as the ubiquitin code. Recent studies revealed that branched ubiquitin chains are abundant in mammalian cells and regulate important pathways. They include proteasomal degradation of misfolded and disease-causing proteins, regulation of NF-κB signalling and apoptotic cell fate decisions. Targeted protein degradation through chemical degraders emerged as a transformative therapeutic paradigm aimed at inducing the disappearance of unwanted cellular proteins. To further improve the efficacy of target degradation and expand its applications, understanding the molecular mechanism of degraders’ action from the view of ubiquitin code biology is required. In this review, I discuss the roles of the ubiquitin code in biological pathways and in chemically induced targeted protein degradation by focusing on the branched ubiquitin codes that we have characterized.

Architectures hétérogènes sont largement utilisées dans le domaine de calcul haute performance. Cependant, le développement d'applications sur des architectures hétérogènes est indéniablement fastidieuse et sujette à erreur pour un programmeur même expérimenté. Pour passer une application aux architectures multi-cœurs hétérogènes, les développeurs doivent décomposer les données de l'entrée, gérer les échanges de valeur intermédiaire au moment d’exécution et garantir l'équilibre de charge de système. L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer une solution de programmation parallèle pour les programmeurs novices, qui permet de faciliter le processus de codage et garantir la qualité de code. Nous avons comparé et analysé les défauts de solutions existantes, puis nous proposons un nouvel outil de programmation STEPOCL avec un nouveau langage de domaine spécifique qui est conçu pour simplifier la programmation sur les architectures hétérogènes. Nous avons évalué la performance de STEPOCL sur trois cas d'application classiques : un stencil 2D, une multiplication de matrices et un problème à N corps. Le résultat montre que : (i) avec l'aide de STEPOCL, la performance d'application varie linéairement selon le nombre d'accélérateurs, (ii) la performance de code généré par STEPOCL est comparable à celle de la version manuscrite. (iii) les charges de travail, qui sont trop grandes pour la mémoire d'un seul accélérateur, peuvent être exécutées en utilisant plusieurs accélérateurs. (iv) grâce à STEPOCL, le nombre de lignes de code manuscrite est considérablement réduit<br>Heterogeneous architectures have been widely used in the domain of high performance computing. However developing applications on heterogeneous architectures is time consuming and error-prone because going from a single accelerator to multiple ones indeed requires to deal with potentially non-uniform domain decomposition, inter-accelerator data movements, and dynamic load balancing. The aim of this thesis is to propose a solution of parallel programming for novice developers, to ease the complex coding process and guarantee the quality of code. We lighted and analysed the shortcomings of existing solutions and proposed a new programming tool called STEPOCL along with a new domain specific language designed to simplify the development of an application for heterogeneous architectures. We evaluated both the performance and the usefulness of STEPOCL. The result show that: (i) the performance of an application written with STEPOCL scales linearly with the number of accelerators, (ii) the performance of an application written using STEPOCL competes with an handwritten version, (iii) larger workloads run on multiple devices that do not fit in the memory of a single device, (iv) thanks to STEPOCL, the number of lines of code required to write an application for multiple accelerators is roughly divided by ten

Abstract:
Having the ability to perform large automatic software changes in a code base gives new possibilities for software restructuring and cost savings. The possibility of replacing software libraries in a semi-automatic way has been studied. String metrics are used to find equivalents between two libraries by looking at class- and method names. Rules based on the equivalents are then used to describe how to apply the transformation to the code base. Using the abstract syntax tree, locations for replacements are found and transformations are performed. After the transformations have been performed, an evaluation of the saved effort of doing the replacement automatically versus manually is made. It shows that a large part of the cost can be saved. An additional evaluation calculating the maintenance cost saved annually by changing libraries is also performed in order to prove the claim that an exchange can reduce the annual cost for the project.

This thesis describes techniques for defining independent tasks in Java programs forparallelization. Existing Java parallelization APIs like JOMP, Parallel Java,Deterministic Parallel Java, JConqurr and JaMP are discussed. We have seen that JaMPis an implementation of OpenMP for Java, and it has a set of OpenMP directives andruntime library functions. We have discussed that JaMP has source to byte codecompiler, and it does not help in debugging the parallel source codes. There is no designtime syntax checking support of JaMP directives, and we know about mistakes onlywhen we compile the source code with JaMP compiler. So we have decided tocontribute JaMP with adding an option in the compiler to get parallel source code. Wehave created an eclipse plug-in to support design time syntax checking of JaMPdirectives too. It also helps the programmers to get quickly parallel source code withjust one click instead of using shell commands with JaMP compiler.

Les transformations automatiques de code apparaissent dans diverses situations, les refactorings, les migrations inter-langages ou encore la spécialisation de code. Les moteurs supportant ces transformations cherchent dans le code source les occurrences de motifs spécifiés par l’utilisateur, puis les réécrivent grâce à une transformation. Cette transformation peut soit modifier les occurrences elles-mêmes, des éléments de la représentation intermédiaire (IR) du langage, en nouveaux éléments ou réécrire leur code source. Nous nous concentrons sur la réécriture de code source qui offre une meilleure flexibilité grâce à des transformations arbitraires particulièrement utiles à la migration et à la spécialisation de code. Les motifs sont divisés en deux catégories : les motifs explicites et syntaxiques. Les premiers demandent que l’utilisateur connaisse l’IR du langage, un effort d’apprentissage non négligeable. Les seconds demandent seulement de connaître la syntaxe du langage et non son IR, mais requièrent un effort d’implémentation supplémentaire pour les back-ends de langage du moteur. Tandis que les experts en langage connaissent l’IR et la syntaxe du langage, les autres utilisateurs connaissent seulement la syntaxe. Nous proposons un moteur de reconnaissance de motifs offrant une représentation hybride des motifs : les motifs peuvent être à la fois explicites et syntaxiques. Par défaut, le moteur se rabat sur un fonctionnement syntaxique, car la barrière à l’entrée est plus basse. Pour pallier au coup d’implémentation des back-ends de langage pour la reconnaissance syntaxique, nous prenons une approche générative. Le moteur de reconnaissance hybride est couplé avec un moteur de génération d’analyseurs syntaxiques. Ce dernier génère des analyseurs syntaxiques LR généralisés (GLR) capables d’analyser non seulement le code source à réécrire, mais également le motif à reconnaitre. L’implémenteur du back-end de langage n’a alors qu’à ajouter une ligne à la grammaire pour avoir accès au moteur de reconnaissance de motifs pour ce langage. L’approche est basée sur des analyseurs syntaxiques GLR pouvant se dupliquer et traquant ses sous-analyseurs. Ces implémentations particulières de GLR ne passent pas à l’échelle quand trop de duplications sont nécessaires pour gérer les ambiguïtés et notre approche ajoute de la duplication. Pour éviter une explosion du temps d’exécution, nos analyseurs syntaxiques FGLR fusionnent plus régulièrement et permettent une désambiguïsation à la volée pendant l’analyse via des effets de bord<br>Code transformations are needed in various cases: refactorings, migrations, code specialization, and so on. Code transformation engines work by finding a pattern in the source code and rewriting its occurrences according to the transformation. The transformation either rewrites the occurrences, elements of the intermediate representation (IR) of the language, into new elements or directly rewrites the source code. In this work, we focused on source rewriting since it offers more flexibility through arbitrary transformations, especially for migrations and specializations. Matching patterns come in two different flavors, explicit and syntactic. The former requires the user to know the IR of the language, a heavy knowledge burden. The latter only relies on the syntax of the matched language and not its IR, but requires significantly more work to implement the language back-ends. Language experts tend to know the IR and the syntax of a language, while other users know only the syntax. We propose a pattern matching engine offering a hybrid pattern representation: both explicit and syntactic matching are available in the same pattern. The engine always defaults to syntactic as it is the lowest barrier to entry for patterns. To counterbalance the implementation cost of language back-ends for syntactic pattern matching, we take a generative approach. We combine the hybrid pattern matching engine with a parser generator. The parser generator generates generalized LR (GLR) parsers capable of not only parsing the source but also the hybrid pattern. The back-end implementer only needs to add one line to the grammar of the language to activate the pattern matching engine. This approach to pattern matching requires GLR parsers capable of forking and keeping track of each individual fork. These GLR implementations suffer the more forking is done to handle ambiguities and patterns require even more forking. To prevent an explosion, our Fibered-GLR parsers merge more often and allow for classic disambiguation during the parse through side-effects

Abstract:
Hardware evolves faster than software. While a hardware system might need replacement every one to five years, the average lifespan of a software system is a decade, with some instances living up to several decades. Inevitably, code outlives the platform it was developed for and may become legacy: development of the software stops, but maintenance has to continue to keep up with the evolving ecosystem. No new features are added, but the software is still used to fulfil its original purpose. Even in the cases where it is still functional (which discourages its replacement), legacy code is inefficient, costly to maintain, and a risk to security. This thesis proposes methods to leverage the expertise put in the development of legacy code and to extend its useful lifespan, rather than to throw it away. A novel methodology is proposed, for automatically exploiting platform specific optimisations when retargeting a program to another platform. The key idea is to leverage the optimisation information embedded in vector processing intrinsic functions. The performance of the resulting code is shown to be close to the performance of manually retargeted programs, however with the human labour removed. Building on top of that, the question of discovering optimisation information when there are no hints in the form of intrinsics or annotations is investigated. This thesis postulates that such information can potentially be extracted from profiling the data flow during executions of the program. A context-aware data dependence profiling system is described, detailing previously overlooked aspects in related research. The system is shown to be essential in surpassing the information that can be inferred statically, in particular about loop iterators. Loop iterators are the controlling part of a loop. This thesis describes and evaluates a system for extracting the loop iterators in a program. It is found to significantly outperform previously known techniques and further increases the amount of information about the structure of a program that is available to a compiler. Combining this system with data dependence profiling improves its results even more. Loop iterator recognition enables other code modernising techniques, like source code rejuvenation and commutativity analysis. The former increases the use of idiomatic code and as a result increases the maintainability of the program. The latter can potentially drive parallelisation and thus dramatically improve runtime performance.

This thesis presents the findings from a qualitative investigation into teachers’ use of code-switching in bilingual classrooms in Wales. The results of the 2001 census show a slight increase in the proportion of Welsh speakers in Wales, to 21%. This change, combined with increasing governmental support for the Welsh language, suggests that we may now be entering a period of stable Welsh-English bilingualism for those who speak Welsh. This study builds upon previous research into teachers’ use of code-switching by investigating 6 teachers’ perceptions of code-switching during the research period. It is proposed that teachers’ perceptions and awareness of their bilingual identity, examined through case studies have a central role in the decisions made in the bilingual classroom. Synthesising various approaches to code-switching provides educators with an overview of code-switching and its implications for instruction and the classroom as a community. This study makes an important contribution to the understanding of the dynamics of code-switching at classroom level rather than syntactic level, as there is very little research into the bilingual teaching interface in Wales. Ideally, the findings will contribute to the debate on multilingual practice as a natural and effective means of language teaching as well as a force for intercultural understanding. The author is interested in exploring how far and in what ways teachers are aware of the benefits of code-switching and to raise awareness of the relationship between code choice and wider social factors. The study has two main objectives. Firstly, to investigate how far teachers employ code-switching as a strategy and their reasons for doing so. Secondly, to explore how far, and in what ways, these teachers’ identities undergo a process of transformation as a result of their experiences of the research process. The study provides a number of useful insights into the dynamic interplay between code-switching and learning as a legitimate way of using a shared language to scaffold pupils’ learning. A range of teachers’ perceptions of code-switching were detected and the significance of these findings are discussed. The study provides an insight into perceptions of the functions and rationale for code-switching from a teacher’s perspective, which may contribute to the multilingual turn debate and have pedagogical implications.

This book is a study of the programmatic oral performance of the written word and its impact on art and text. Communal singing and reading of the Latin texts that formed the core of Christian ritual and belief consumed many hours of the Benedictine monk's day. These texts-read and sung out loud, memorized, and copied into manuscripts-were often illustrated by the very same monks who participated in the choir liturgy. The meaning of these illustrations sometimes only becomes clear when they are read in the context of the texts these monks heard read. The earliest manuscripts of Cîteaux, copied and illuminated at the same time that the new monastery's liturgy was being reformed, demonstrate the transformation of aural experience to visual and textual legacy.

Abstract Transformative festivals have emerged as a fascinating trend in events literature. These festivals promise long-lasting personal transformation in what are often billed as modern-day rites of passage. Some scholars view Burning Man as the progenitor of all transformative festivals, although the decommodified nature of the now 75,000-person annual arts and culture event marks it as distinct in several key ways. Foremost among these is the official code of conduct for the community known as the 10 Principles. A grassroots commitment to consent, known as 11th Principle Consent, also distinguishes the community from outwardly similar festivals. Within the liminal space of the event, these rules supplant many of the hegemonic structures of everyday life, making Burning Man, and its global network of smaller events, a fascinating case study from which to explore the creation of alternative cultural norms and their effects. This chapter explores the evolution and implementation of a culture of consent through in-depth interviews with the female-identifying Burners who drove the creation of this movement. It also traces the development of community-protected safe spaces to explore and grow. The liminal nature of the tourism event experience makes such an experimental culture possible and serves as a unique case study for scholars interested in the transformative potential of tourism events.

This transformative process converts unreacted explosive materials into stable product molecules, reaching a steady state known as the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) state. This study aims to effectively describe the detonation phenomenon in energetic materials through the application of the CJ theory. Using a computational approach, we developed a MATLAB code to calculate the minimum detonation velocity (DCJ) of the explosive and analyze product expansion under constant entropy conditions.

In the history of computer science, the development of algorithms has long been pivotal to building the many programs used every day by civilians, such as programs for texting, entertainment, research, and anything on the internet. However, this programming remains time-consuming, and expensive, and requires years of expertise to master. Even if completing a singular project is not particularly difficult, the knowledge required to create that project might take years to learn. Since the development of AI, the process of fabricating algorithms has been shortened greatly. Anybody with internet access can make software using AI, but a novice in programming would still struggle with creating new code from a Pseudocode created by AI. By utilizing the OpenAI API, we created InteractiveWeb, a program that takes input from a user, sends it to ChatGPT, and, after creating an initial model of that program, repeatedly develops a new and improved version based on previous code. With this program, the AI could accurately develop instructed projects, allowing it to create the fully working games of Minesweeper, Connect 4, and even Chess by repeatedly refining code based on user feedback and self-debugging. InteractiveWeb aims to lower barriers to entry for novice programmers, foster creativity, and reduce burnout often associated with manual code development. Key results demonstrate improved coding efficiency, accuracy of results, and user satisfaction, highlighting the system’s potential as a transformative educational and development tool.

To address these challenges, Daleel Petroleum implemented a QR code-based vehicle inspection system using the INTELEX mobile application transitioning from manual processes to a digital platform. This innovative approach streamlined inspections, enhanced record management, and improved compliance with the OPAL Road Safety Standard and Daleel Requirements (Oman Society for Petroleum Services, 2023). The system leverages unique QR codes assigned to each vehicle, enabling inspectors to scan codes and access digital checklists instantly. The workflow includes QR code scanning, checklist completion, real-time submission, automatic record logging, and notifications for corrective actions. Key enhancements such as offline functionality, customizable fields, and comprehensive training programs were introduced to ensure smooth adoption and usability across diverse operational contexts. Results demonstrated significant improvements, including a 50% increase in vehicle inspections, reduced data entry errors, and enhanced compliance tracking. The system's real-time reporting and proactive maintenance capabilities contributed to improved fleet safety and operational efficiency. Challenges such as technological adaptation and network dependency were addressed through training and offline functionality, ensuring seamless implementation. Future optimizations will focus on predictive maintenance algorithms, advanced data analytics, and integration with vehicle telemetry data, further enhancing fleet management practices. In this report we provide some information concerning the transformation of these six new releases from the ENDF-6 data format into the Geant4 format. In addition, we present a comparison between results obtained with Geant4 and MCNP6 when using these libraries.

Asia has experienced widespread transformation and growth, accompanied by increased demographic pressure, greater intensification of agricultural production, industrialization, and urbanization. This economic growth has been very resource- and carbon-intensive, while climate change has triggered or exacerbated behaviors and defense mechanisms that have come at the expense of the natural environment. Therefore, we examine and compare three Asian Development Bank (ADB) projects in two member countries of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation: one in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and two in Mongolia that relate to sustainable green development and use innovative financial mechanisms, and behavior-changing nudges. We provide comparative analyses and aim to demonstrate effective, innovative, and sustainable green finance and green transformation approaches in these two countries to address these pressures. The ADB–PRC loan for the Anhui Huangshan Xin’an River Ecological Protection and Green Development project aims to help Huangshan municipality reduce water pollution in the Xin’an River Basin, which is part of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The project is piloting innovative green financing mechanisms to reduce rural pollution and complement the ongoing interprovincial eco-compensation scheme while supporting green agroecological businesses through two interventions: the Green Investment Fund and the Green Incentive Mechanism. In Mongolia, ADB and the Government of Mongolia have developed two large-scale transformative projects using integrated design and innovative green financing mechanisms to leverage private sector investment: (i) Aimags and Soums Green Regional Development Investment Program, which aims to promote green urban–rural linkages, green agribusiness development, natural capital, rangeland regeneration, and soil carbon sequestration through the (ii) Ulaanbaatar Green Affordable Housing and Resilient Urban Renewal Project, which aims to transform Ulaanbaatar’s vulnerable and substandard peri-urban areas into low-carbon, resilient eco-districts that provide access to green affordable housing.

This paper explores the landscape of repressive politics in the three Central Asian states of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan with an emphasis on the phase of “transformative violence” and the patterns of inconsistent repression. It argues that repressions alone cannot guarantee the longevity of authoritarian regimes. It is for this reason that the Central Asian authoritarian leaders consistently come up with discursive justifications of repression, not least through portraying it as a necessary tool for progress or security. While the new Central Asian leaders’ discourses are characterized by liberal narratives, the illiberal practices keep prevailing across these countries.

Software has become essential in all areas of scientific research, both as a tool for research, a product of research, and a research object in itself. In the quest to make research results reproducible, and pass knowledge to future generations, we must preserve three main pillars: the research articles that describe the results, the data sets used or produced, and the software source code that embodies the logic of the data transformation. Indeed, the preservation of software source code is as essential as preserving research articles and data sets. The main aim of this in-person half-day event, organized by the French Committee for Open Science on November 29th 2023, was to bring together high-level stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds, including researchers, research software engineers, research evaluation bodies, infrastructures, academic open source program offices (OSPOs), and financial backers, to share their experience and views on research software. Abstract:
Major changes demand exertions of the imagination. Costa Rica possesses significant challenges in its Nationally Determined Contribution presented in 2020 (NDC 2020), the National Decarbonization Plan, and the National Adaptation Policy; meeting them requires work, commitment, and creative work that enables us to visualize it. These stories offer us a glimpse into the future we aspire to and the future we fear, a glimpse of what is coming and what could come. Costa Rica has the economic and technological conditions for transformation. Having the necessary conversations to promote it is still pending, conversations in which citizens feel involved. With this in mind, we propose these stories as a way to start the discussion and invite us to contemplate what could come and what we could do to build a better future.
