Abstract:
The high time-resolution radio sky represents unexplored astronomical territory where the discovery potential is high. In this thesis I have studied the transient radio sky, focusing on millisecond scales. As such, this work is concerned primarily with neutron stars, the most populous member of the radio transient parameter space. In particular, I have studied the well known radio pulsars and the recently identified group of neutron stars which show erratic radio emission, known as RRATs, which show radio bursts every few minutes to every few hours. When RRATs burst onto the scene in 2006, it

Observations of the transient radio sky provide an insight into the most dynamic and energetic events in the Universe. The exploration of transient and variable sources, for a long time primarily focused on higher frequencies, has recently been extended to the long wavelength regime, with the development of facilities such as the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR). In this work I describe the general design of LOFAR as well as details of the commissioning work performed during the early stages of operation. Secondly, I perform an analysis of the first dedicated LOFAR transient survey - the Radio Sky

The radio sky can exhibit dynamic changes that provide an excellent opportunity to study the most exotic events in the Universe. In recent years the development and completion of advanced radio facilities has enabled the transient radio sky to be probed to unprecedented levels, especially at low frequencies with telescopes such as the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) revolutionising observations in this regime. This work primarily focuses on the detection of radio transients both at low and high frequencies. I describe the analysis of a 60 MHz LOFAR monitoring campaign centred at the North Celestia

Study of the time variable sources and phenomena in Astrophysics provides us with important insights into the stellar evolution, galactic evolution, stellar population studies and cosmological studies such as number density of dark massive objects. Study of these sources and phenomena forms the basis of Time Domain surveys, where the telescopes while scanning the sky regularly for a period of time provides us with positional and temporal data of various Astrophysical sources and phenomena happening in the Universe. This thesis addresses the topic of exploring and characterising the transient and variable radio sky, using both existing radio telescopes, and the next generation of radio facilities such as the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR). Studies of well known variable radio sources are presented in conjunction with blind searches of parameter space for unknown sources. Firstly, a three year campaign to monitor the low luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus NGC 7213 in the radio and X-ray bands is presented. My work of thesis focuses on two protagonists of the transient sky, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and fast radio bursts (FRBs), tackling both the open issues behind their emission and the technological challenges connected with their observation. In the context of an in-depth understanding of GRBs I studied the popular ”Ep,i–Eiso” correlation. It is fundamental to shed light on the peculiar behaviour of a few events, that appear to be important outliers of the Ep,i–Eiso correlation. In the first part of thesis, I investigate if the locations in the Ep,i/Eiso plane of these bursts may be due to the

While synoptic surveys in the optical and at high energies have revealed a rich discovery phase space of slow transients, a similar yield is still awaited in the radio. Majority of the past blind surveys, carried out with radio interferometers, have suffered from a low yield of slow transients, ambiguous transient classifications, and contamination by false positives. The newly-refurbished Karl G. Jansky Array (Jansky VLA) offers wider bandwidths for accurate RFI excision as well as substantially-improved sensitivity and survey speed compared with the old VLA. The Jansky VLA thus eliminates th
