Full textChildren who struggle to learn math despite normal intelligence and adequate schooling may suffer from dyscalculia. Although this learning disability may affect 3-7% of children worldwide, its causes remain poorly understood. Previous research has suggested that dyscalculia was due to a specific deficit in the processing of numerical magnitude that results from neural anomalies to the Intraparietal Sulcus (IPS). However, a growing body of studies has highlighted the domain-general deficits exhibited by children with dyscalculia. The goal of the present thesis was to investigate the neural relationship between math learning and a type of deductive reasoning, namely transitive reasoning (A>B, B>C, therefore A>C). In a first study, we used functional Magnetic Reasonance Imaging (fMRI) to measure brain activity in both typically developing (TD) children and chidren with dyscalculia while they listened to stories that included transitive relations. In a second study, we followed TD children longitudinally and to test whether brain measures of transitive reasoning could predict math improvement. First, the processing of transitive relations was associated with enhanced activity in the left IPS in TD children, but not in children with dyscalculia. Second, children with dyscalculia made more errors when processing transitive relations than TD peers. Third, IPS activity and behavioral performance was correlated with working-memory skill across all participants, suggesting that working memory impairments contribute to impaired transitive reasoning skills. Fourth, math gain in TD children was predicted by brain activity around the IPS during the processing of transitive relations. Therefore, the present findings show that measures of transitive reasoning are associated with math achievement. Our results further suggest that impaired neural processing of transitive relations in the IPS may contribute to math difficulties in dyscalculia

Ida, Naomi. Paris, EHESS, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003EHES0050.
Full textToday, the "jidôshi/tadôshi" duo is used both as an equivalent to the conventional Western grammatical category of transitive/intransitive verbs and to designate the diathesis of ji/ta- verbs and transitive/intransitive verbs. Indeed, the Japanese "JI/TA" pair has a very different history from that of transitivity in the Western grammatical tradition. These two traditions didn't cross paths until the 18th century, when Japanese scholars of the Dutch language created the neologisms "jidôshi/tadôshi" as equivalents for the Dutch grammar methods. This dissertation aims to show how the "jidôshi/tadôshi" and indigenous "JI/TA" dichotomies combine the vestiges of various local attempts to systematically classify grammatical phenomena with categorizations imported from Western theories of grammar

Full textBased on a contrastive analysis, this thesis deals with the verbal structure in French and Russian. Its objective is to establish a reflexive look at the two languages in order to determine the difference and the similarity in their verbal construction. Exploring the question of the verbs of different structure, it also tries to find the difficulties caused by this difference in learning. Thus, in this research, problematic verbs are spoken of in a didactic as well as linguistic angle. This work, composed of three chapters, speaks first of all about the transitive/intransitive status of verbs in both languages by treating the traditional and modern approach and sets up a contrastive study in relation to the valence question. Verbal construction is explored with complement in the second chapter of the research. In this part, the parallel analysis of the verbs is performed in order to identify their functioning according to the grammatical means of each language. And finally, the comparison of each verb considered problematical to the learning in both languages followed by tables took the part of the last chapter. The production of preliminary tests with Russian-speaking learners is also part of this work in order to better understand the difficulties of the latter during the communication

This thesis presents time-series photometry of transits of 11 different extrasolar planets. Observations were conducted with the Fred L. Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope and the Wise Observatory im telescope, in standard optical bandpasses. The number of transits observed for each planet ranges between one and 20 transits, and differential aperture photometry is performed for each transit observation. For the system TrES-2, this thesis examines 14 different different transit observations. Because of this large quantity of data, the parameters Rp/R., b, a/R., and i are also fitted for with precision using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique, and the resultant parameter values are presented. Transit-timing analysis is performed on all systems: CoRoT-2, GJ436, HAT-P-1, HD17156, HD189733, TrES-1, TrES-2, WASP-2, WASP-3, XO-1, XO-2, and XO-3. Transit timing is important both for constraining the orbital period and to search for variations in the transit-to-transit interval that could indicate the presence of an unseen companion planet. The transit center times for nearly all observations are found, and the planetary periods for all systems are calculated. In many cases these periods are determined with much greater precision than previously known. It is found that systems XO-2 and HAT-P-1 are consistent with a constant period, but our data are not conclusive with regards to the other systems.

The disruption of the Earth system’s ecological cycles and climate change, mainly caused by a global social metabolism based on fossil fuels, call for the international community to look for changes within global governance strategies towards a sustainable development model not based on fossil fuels. The challenge posed by this new economic development model and by this new social organization relies on how to operate within planetary boundaries from a justice perspective. In this global context, the Mexican energy transition policy is the response to the international commitments undertaken by the government regarding climate change. This doctoral thesis intends to analyze all the steps taken in the national energy policy context, from planning to implementation, all from a justice perspective. In this sense, some analytical tools, like environmental justice, climate justice and energy justice, are used to critically evaluate this policy. The main research question is whether relies on the elements that the Mexican government should consider for the implementation of the energy police, in terms of justice.
Hong, Yi S. M. Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Transition to smart card technology : how transit operators can encourage the take-up of smart card technology." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/38237.
Full textIncludes bibliographical references (p. 181-184).
This thesis explores and evaluates the essential strategies needed for transit agencies to switch from traditional fare collection systems to smart cards. More transit agencies today are investing in smart card technology as part of their new automated fare collection (AFC) systems. Although the benefits of switching to smart card systems have been well-researched and acknowledged by transit agencies, it is unclear how a transit agency should go about implementing a smart card system in order to achieve optimum customer acceptance and to reap maximum benefits from the system. Recent experience has shown that a range of implementation policy decisions can go a long way towards speeding or slowing down the adoption of the technology by customers. A case study approach is used here to identify and evaluate the effectiveness and impacts of policies used by five transit agencies that currently employ smart cards. These policies fall into two categories: 1) distribution, operational and usage policies, and 2) fare policies. Distribution, operational and usage policies must be designed to facilitate and enhance customer adoption of smart cards, especially in the case where alternative fare media will co-exist.
(cont.) Fare policies are designed to differentiate smart cards from other fare media through differential pricing strategies, frequent-use bonuses and low price guarantees. The thesis also examines the use of fare models in assisting transit agencies to predict ridership and revenue, especially focusing on the features needed in these models to predict the usage rates of smart cards and their associated unique fare options. Finally, the findings from the research are integrated and used to develop a set of guidelines for use by a transit agency that is switching to a smart card fare payment system. The main topics of these guidelines were identified as: 1) the use of fare policy incentives, 2) balance between restrictions and alternatives with respect to co-existing fare media, 3) accessibility to smart card support services, 4) capitalizing on the superiority of smart card technology, and 5) the use of a single card. To illustrate the usefulness of the guidelines, they were applied to a case study of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)'s new AFC program, the CharlieCard.

Full textThis exploratory study seeks to contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the transition of small businesses from the informal to the formal sector. It builds on the role of the informal sector as “engines” for economic and socio-cultural development. Using selected businesses in the Mangaung area of the Free State province as case studies, this study investigates the motives for transition of informal businesses to the formal sector in South Africa, challenges encountered in the process of formalisation and the coping strategies relied upon to deal with challenges encountered in the process of formalisation. Key indicators were identified from the literature and were further developed for investigation. A qualitative approach was used for the collection of data from selected transited businesses in the Bloemfontein area using semi-structured interviews. Findings from the study suggest that the decision by small business owners to formalise is motivated by their desire to grow and expand their businesses; access to proper banking services; and to access government contracts and tenders. The results also reveal that the quest for growth is however hindered by long queues endured by business applicants during the process of formalisation; lack of adequate and relevant information on the process of formalisation; coupled with the lack of government support for informal businesses’ transitioning to the formal sector. Findings further revealed that adequate information on the process of formalisation and self-trust are key coping mechanisms needed by small business owners to successfully progress/ transit to the formal sector. Based on these findings, the study recommends that government both provincial and national play a more proactive role in regulating the informal economy by creating an environment conducive for their growth and development, and facilitating their transition to the formal sector. Informal small business owners also must be provided with information on the process of formalisation and of the existing government structures put in place to support businesses in their transition phase.

This research examines the powerful urban social movement origineted during the last years of francoist dictatorship and time known as 'the transition', at Barcelonés Nord. At the North of the city of Barcelona this area is formed by the towns of Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adrià de Besòs. The Barcelonés Nord have a large population growth since the early 40s and 50s of the twentieth century, when the arrival of people from other parts of the Spanish state was restarted. The daily struggle to improve life in the neighborhoods, where substandard housing was predominated, ushered in an early organization. Francoist authorities tried to control these neighborhoods by encouraging particular model of association. Despite these attempts at control did not succeed to finish action other factors that favor the formation of a strong sense of collective identity and class that led to the subsequent outbreak of local movement. The action of catholic worker's organizations also of a group of young priests who promote a different apostolate in these towns' working-class neighborhoods and the performance of the anti-Franco activists were crucial. The leftist Marxist political parties and other organizations have traditionally prioritized work in factories, but gradually be given more importance in the neighborhoods until the seventies, to consider it comparable to a battlefront union. It was in the seventies when it erupted in full force a series of struggles in different neighborhood of the towns of Barcelonés Nord, whether driven by social centers, neighborhood committees and also neighborhood associations. The initial reason was the poor construction and lack of any kind of service. But soon joined more politicized claims against dictatorship and demanding a democratic councils with a speech highly critical of the capitalist system. Francoist local authorities were overwhelmed. In order to establish democratic councils the neighborhood movement experienced a moment of crisis among other reasons for the departure of neighborhood leaders to take responsibility for the new councils, the debate on what should be the role of the movement in the new context political, crisis of the different leftist groups and, as well, because of the concern of the economic crisis itself. However, this did not lead to the disappearance of the local movement since the eighties there were still conflicts with an intensity comparable to of the previous decade, although now more responsive to defensive reactions and there was a will clearly assumed by large sectors of the population to change the political system as if it had happened to the neighborhood struggle against the dictatorship.

Full textThis thesis presents a series of theoretical studies based on electronic structure methods to analyze the magnetic anisotropy and other related properties of magnetic complexes with total spin S = ½. The first three chapters are devoted to transition metal complexes while the fourth one addresses lanthanides systems, specifically YbIII. The first chapter determines a relationship between the d orbitals occupation and the coordination geometry of S = ½ transition metal complexes with their magnetic anisotropy, through its g-tensor. This connection is possible due to the relationship between the g-tensor and the splitting of the d manyfold. These energies were obtained using NEVPT2/AILFT calculation on [MIILn] models, screening for different MII metals, coordination numbers (n) and geometries, and ligand nature (L = NH3 or Cl-). The second chapter is a study carried out in collaboration with Dr. Gaita Ariño’s group from the molecular Science Institute of Valencia (ICMol) analyzing the spin-phonon coupling in three VIV qubits: [VOPc], [VO(dmit)2]2- y [V(dmit)3]2-, being Pc = Phthalocyanine and dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate. In order to analyze the spin-phonon coupling we examined the variation of the magnetic anisotropy using NEVPT2/AILFT calculations for each vibrational mode. The spin-phonon coupling constants obtained for the vibrational modes in the three complexes were used to rationalize their different decoherence times. The third chapter, the last one dedicated to transition metal complexes, compiles a series of collaborations with experimental groups. In these studies, using the same methods as in the previous chapters, we analyzed the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the compounds, explaining experimental results through theoretical calculations. Also, we fitted the spin relaxation times considering the all possible spin relaxation mechanisms. Finally, the fourth chapter explores the magnetic anisotropy and electronic structure of YbIII compounds on the basis of theoretical calculations in a series of [Yb(H2O)n]3+ y [Yb(OH)3(H2O)n-3] model using ideal geometries corresponding to coordination numbers between 2 and 10. These calculations explain the properties of the YbIII single-molecule

Full textThe transition to renewable energy involves two kinds of environmental concerns. First, fossil fuels are exhaustible and second, their use generates negative externalities through irreversible environmental damage. Furthermore, there are possible synergies between energy efficiency measures and renewable energy adoption in the sense that the former reduces the energy demand so that the latter can begin to cut future greenhouse gases emissions. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the optimal energy transition under certain and uncertain occurrence of environmental catastrophe and to determine incentive-based instruments at the household level in order to boost the energy transition. The dissertation consists of four chapters that independently present and discuss different issues of energy transition. The first chapter focuses on the optimal energy transition involving decisions about both renewable energy adoption and investment in energy saving technologies, when there is a certain pollution threshold that triggers the occurrence of environmental catastrophe. The second chapter investigates the optimal transition to renewable energy under uncertain occurrence of environmental catastrophe. The third chapter is devoted to understanding household behavior regarding energy transition. The fourth chapter explores the role of smart-grids in integrating intermittent renewable energy to facilitate the energy transition

Full textIn the following pages I have approached the development of the Workers' Commissions [CCOO] during the Transition from Franco regime and the democracy in Spain. Specifically, my object of study has been the transformation experienced from its status as a socio-political movement of opposition to the dictatorship, to that of a Confederal Trade Union or, as they themselves put it during the period of political change, the construction of a "new type of union." In this respect, both the structuring and struggle of the union during the transition have been studied. Likewise, I have paid attention to the strategic debates – not always cordially – and trade union action maintained during the first PSOE governments. Indeed, CCOO played a crucial role in the terminal crisis of the Francoist dictatorship, but its role remained relevant even in the new juncture marked by the ebb of social mobilization and the articulation of a democratic framework. However, in my opinion, historiography has not reflected this importance. The history that follows, therefore, is that of an important socio-political actor that, at the same time, was a fundamental witness of a period of important changes. Somehow, we could say that the political break with the previous regime was followed by a socio-economic (and even cultural) break. This was the environment in which the CCOO deployed its activity. As many other European countries – albeit from a different starting point –, Spain experienced very important changes between the crisis of the 1970s – synonymous of long-term unemployment – and the process of "modernization" of the 1980s and 1990s: the country moved from the framework of an authoritarian fordism to an economy integrated in the European market. This integration, stimulated by narratives focused on fostering competitiveness, was concomitant to the processes labor market deregulation and wage moderation. In a hard scenario – but at the same time loaded with opportunities –, CCOO sought to consolidate itself in organic and institutional terms, tried to avoid the social disintegration and proposed concrete alternatives. Although hampered by a lag of at least three decades, the process of union-building and the union action deployed offers a balance of lights and shadows. But, at the same time, is relevant to understand the years of Transition and democratic consolidation.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the transition period of the Spanish and Catalan Church and how it influenced the subsequent political transition. It is important to consider that the basis of this study is the ecclesiastic hierarchy, above all the Catalan hierarchy between the years 1970 and 1980. I start with a brief bibliographic summary of the bishops who held the different Catalan dioceses in the seventies, pointing out the exceptional fact that almost all of them spoke Catalan and were born in the Catalan Countries. After that, I develop the subject of the Joint Assembly (Assemblea Conjunta) and I explain the difficulties gone through to re-establish the Generalitat (the government of the autonomous community of Catalonia). I started my research work with the Joint Assembly, because it is there where we can say that the ecclesiastic transition started, since in this Assembly people dealt with subjects and controversies which had never been dealt with during the Franco period. I also explain how this Assembly was organised in Catalonia, its problems and its achievements. Next, I study the impact of the document “The Church and the Political Community”, which was very important in the relationship between the Church and the State. We have to take into account that the document represents the attempt of the ecclesiastic community to separate from the temporal political power, with which it had always been closely related. I also analyse the consequences that this transition had for the Franco government and the attempts carried out by this government to avoid its effects. In addition I do some research on the Church internal problems, the new education law and how the Church reacted to it, and the Catalanisation process in the ecclesiastic community of Catalonia. Carrero Blanco’s death and burial contributed to deteriorate the already bad relationship existing between Church and State leaders. Besides, it represented the beginning of the regime’s decline. The Episcopal Conference was well aware of this decline and therefore insisted on moving away from the political power. With reference to Arias Navarro’s government I deal with two subjects. On the one hand the Añoveros affair and on the other hand the reconciliation document. The Añoveros affair represented the highest tension moments between the government and the ecclesiastic hierarchy. This fact had a great impact in Catalonia where an important part of the Catalan Church agreed and felt identified with the subject of Añoveros’ polemic homily. The reconciliation, central subject of the Holy Year, was welcomed by the ecclesiastic hierarchy, because this one wanted all the Spanish people to come to an agreement, no matter what their ideas were. The thoughts and ideas discussed during the reconciliation process were ideas from people contrary to the political regime, but this one had no longer the strength to stop criticisms. Franco’s death and burial represented the start of the political transition. The changes that it brought about were welcomed by the Church, with the exception of some small nostalgic groups. In this part I comment the consequences of the political reform, the first elections, the Constitution (law), the first laws and among them the most polemic law: the divorce law. During all these changes, the Church was neutral and did not give support to any political parties, but it did give some advice and directions to the Catholic Christians about moral aspects. Finally, I analyse the process of the Catalan Autonomy, its consequences for the Catalan Church and the difference of opinions between the Catalan and the Spanish Church.
