Abstract:
This chapter motivates the criterion of minimum potential energy as a stability criterion for conservative problems. It examines the role played by various convexity conditions (ordinary convexity, quasiconvexity, polyconvexity, rank-one convexity) in the energy-minimization problem. Applications to simple phase-transition problems involving discontinuous deformation gradients are presented.

Re-incarceration of former prisoners is commonly associated with relapse to drug and alcohol use because of ineffective treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) after release. High entry rates of people who use drugs (PWUDs) into prisons or jails results in the criminal justice system (CJS) bearing a disproportionate burden of the epidemic of people with SUDs. In contrast to 8% of U.S. adults in the general population, up to 65% of prisoners meet DSM-IV criteria for having a SUD and, depending on geographical location, 70% of HIV-infected prisoners meet criteria for opioid dependence. Hypermeter has different meanings for different theorists, and the concept, properly rhythmic, has been often co-opted to represent tonal structure. In this chapter a set of criteria for hypermetrical analysis in the form of high-level rhythmic structure is defined that involves regularity as an essential element but does not require strict regularity. The network representation of rhythmic structure is compared to William Rothstein’s measure-counting representation, and attendant concepts like deletion and extension are translated into networks. Important hypermetrical effects such as deletio

The chapter explores how a profession is different from an occupation and how an area of human endeavor evolves from an occupation to a profession. More particularly, it asks why the effort to make management a profession was unsuccessful and how medicine and law made the successful transition from simple practices to complex professions. The professionalization of medicine and law is tracked in some detail, generating conclusions about how professional status is achieved. These include generally accepted body of knowledge; extended education; extended training; clear criteria for evaluation;

Because of the scope and duration of Colombia’s internal armed conflict, that conflict has produced much suffering in the civilian population. This chapter focuses on the Court’s jurisprudence protecting the rights of victims, especially of the internal armed conflict. In this area, the incorporation of international law has been particularly important. Drawing on this jurisprudence, the Court has insisted that victims be given rights to truth, justice, and reparations. The contours of this right have proven particularly important in processes in which the government has sought to give amnesti

The performance of international courts has traditionally been judged against criteria of compliance and effectiveness. Whilst these are clearly desirable objectives for litigants before Africa’s international courts, this book shows that we must look beyond these criteria to fully appreciate the impact of African international courts. This book definitively shows how litigants in these courts use their participation in international litigation to achieve other objectives: to amplify political disputes with their governments, to build their movement, to educate the public about their cause, an

This chapter explores the vagueness inherent in the conceptual structure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although psychopathologists have developed precise diagnostic criteria for PTSD, concepts such as traumatic, severe, and impaired generate borderline cases. As in the sorites paradox, where difficult to distinguish but successively smaller piles of sand may be called heaps, in PTSD similar but successively milder traumatic events may produce PTSD symptoms. The vagueness that bedevils PTSD is of two sorts: the degree vagueness manifested in gradual transitions between subtraumatic a

Many emerging adults find themselves navigating the complex transition from adolescence to adulthood while enrolled in college. The key to navigating the demands of college (and emerging adulthood) is not simply what decisions one makes but also how one makes them. This chapter foregrounds college student development research regarding the developmental capacities that underlie young adults’ decision-making processes. Drawing upon two longitudinal studies of college student and young adult development, the authors show how young adults move from uncritically following external formulas learned

This chapter begins the transition from empirical to normative concerns, explaining and evaluating the diverse pattern of taxing and exempting churches and other religious institutions. Entanglement concerns help to explain this diversity. This chapter identifies which taxes carry the greatest (and least) threat of church-state entanglement. It also discusses why entanglement should be an important consideration when deciding to tax or exempt religious institutions. Either taxing or exempting churches and sectarian entities involves entanglement. Central to this discussion are such tax policy

The EBA Guidelines on loan origination and monitoring (hereinafter "GL LOM") undoubtedly represent a substantially new piece of the banking regulatory framework. In fact, for the first time, the regulator moves into a topic that was traditionally outside the scope of financial regulation, so far almost exclusively focused on aspects directly linked to both micro- and macro-prudential stability, notably through capital and liquidity management requirements and guidelines on Business Model and Internal Governance. The credit management process, and in particular loan origination and monitoring,
