Full textThis research raises the question of longer working lives in an aging French society. It seeks to observe the consequences of political choices on the representations of age and on the organization of social temporalities. From a theoretical point of view, this research combines two dimensions: the life course perspective and the cognitive analysis of public policies. Results show a gradual disintegration of boundaries between work and retirement, accentuated by the attenuation of the demarcation lines between merchant and non-market work. In particular, this phenomenon can be seen as on of the effects of a process of (re) mobilization of skills during the transition from employment to retirement. From a methodological point of view, two surveys were conducted. The first was conducted with companies that were subject to collective negociation under the public framework of the "Contrat de génération". It was interested in how this law has led these companies to question and adjust their age management practices, particularly with regard to measures relating to the transfer of skills and intergenerational cooperation. The second survey focused on the specific case study of a national association of retirees and pre-retirees who practice "skills-based volunteering". It questioned individual and collective motivations underlying this practice and the issues it raise about their place in society

Full textChapter one examines the long run statistical characteristics of financial returns in France and the USA for selected assets. This study clearly shows that the returns’ distributions diverge from the Gaussian strategy as regards longholding periods. Thereafter we analyze the consequences of the non-Gaussian nature of stock returns on default-option retirement plans.Chapter two provides a reasonable explanation to the strong debate on the Efficient Market Hypothesis. The cause of the debate is often attributed to small sample sizes in combination with statistical tests for mean reversion that lackpower. In order to bypass this problem, we use the approach developed by Campbell and Viceira (2005) who have settled a vectorial autoregressive methodology (VAR) to measure the mean reversion of asset returns. The third chapter evaluates the speed of convergence of stock prices. A convenient way to characterize the speed of mean reversion is the half-life. Comparing the stock indexes of four developed countries (US, UK, France and Japan) during the period 1950-2014, we establish significant mean reversion, with a half-life lying between 4,0 and 5,8 years. The final chapter provides some results from a model built in order to study the linked impacts of demography and economy on the French pension scheme. In order to reveal the risks that are contained in pension fund investment, we use a Trending Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process instead of the typical GBM for modeling stock returns. We find that funded scheme returns, net of management fees, are slightly lower thanthe PAYG internal rate of return

Full textThis manuscript summarizes the work of a thesis on Anderson's localization and transport of ultra-cold matter waves in disordered media. This is an experimental work aiming to study the Anderson transition separating the energy states of a quantum particle placed in a disordered potential into two phases: localized states and diffusive states.First, we will recall some fundamental concepts about wave localization and how such phenomenon is linked with some interference effects. Then, we will give a global description of the experimental set-up allowing to prepare the ultra-cold atomic samples used as a source of quantum matter waves, and to generate the speckle field used as disordered potential for the atoms. At the end of this introductory work, the concepts of localization introduced previously will be applied to the transport of cold atoms in a speckle field. A brief state of the art of cold-atom experiments dealing with the Anderson transition will allow us to set the limits of these works in terms of energy control on the atomic states. These limitations will then motivate the implementation of a new experimental "spectroscopic" method allowing a complete control of the energy of the atoms placed in disorder. The concept of spectral function will then be presented as a fundamental tool for characterizing energy states and for calibrating the energy reliability of the spectroscopic method. Finally, the experimental results on the measurement of spectral functions by this new spectroscopic method will show that it would be indeed possible to study the Anderson transition with a much higher energy resolution than the previous experiments

Full textThis thesis shows that while greenhouse gases are a stock pollution that imposes a shadow carbon cost that increases over time, it may be socially desirable to invest now in the deployment of expensive emission-reduction measures. This results solely from taking into account inertia inherent to the accumulation of low-carbon capital, in the absence of any other market imperfection. This thesis also covers the choice of policy instruments that imperfect governments can use to ensure the market implement these investments. It suggests that if governments cannot commit credibly to a carbon price path, or cannot fully compensate the losers from the introduction of a carbon price, then sector-scale policy instruments that incentivize investment in clean capital may be more effective and more acceptable than the carbon price

Full textPurpose : this study aims to explore the relationship between the different levels of person-environment fit and two types of retirement intention (i.e., full retirement and intention to hold a bridge employment). Design/ methodolgy / approach : a representative sample of 357 aged 50 and over employed in french private-sector completed a research survey. Hypotheses were tested by using structural equation models. Findings : the results showed that : the fit between older worker’s abilities and the demands of the job was related positively to the two kinds of intentions included in this study. The perception of values congruence at the profession level and the fit between needs and supplies at the organizational level were also positively and signficantly related to the intention to hold a bridge employment after being retired from career employment. Research limitations : there are several limitations to the study : the cross sectional design, the direction of personne-environment fit, the intentional nature of our dependant variable, the mediating role of attitudinal variables. Originality / value : expanding previous research studies, the research considers the complexity of preparation of retirement transition by exploring different types of retirement intentions and the P-E fit factors related to them

Full textThe thesis focuses to discuss the role of Vietnam financial system in the transitional process of the economy. We experiment the contemporary financial theories in respects to the importance of the financial system on the sustainable economic development to form a ground for an appropriate financial structure. The financial organization is believed to be able to fuel the economic development of the ex-centralized planning countries. The thesis further proposes an approach to develop this organization. The study of the best practice and experience from the successfully transformed countries has supported the theory and become a benchmark for the current reforms in Vietnam. The Vietnamese financial reforms have failed to fuel the economic development. Hence Vietnam is facing difficulty in financing its growth. The theoretical and case study have reaffirmed that the financial reforms in Vietnam should follow the approach by the ex-centralized planning countries which have successfully transformed their economy

Full textThis thesis is about the numerical study of an air flow inside a two dimensionally heated cavity. The aspect ratio height/width is set to two. Boundary conditions on horizontal walls are taken as adiabatic. In this case, the base flow consists of a recirculation around the stratified core of the cavity and of boundary layers along the vertical walls. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a spectral direct numerical simulation code under the Boussinesq assumption coupled with a particle tracking scheme based on interpolation. The Rayleigh number, based on the temperature difference is chosen as the control parameter of the system. The transition to chaos in this flow is considered both from the Eulerian and Lagrangian point of view. The Lagrangian point of view considers the mixing of point-wise non-diffusive passive tracers. The study is based on the identification of invariant objects: fixed points, periodic orbits and their stable/unstable manifolds, homoclinic and heteroclinic connections, toroidal trajectories. The mixing of tracers is partial when the flow undergoes the first Hopf bifurcation. The complete mixing of tracers results from a compromise between Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser's tori, which act as barriers to mixing, and homoclinic/heteroclinic tangles which are responsible for the mixing. The statistical study of return times and the homogenisation rate shows regionswhere the dynamics is non-hyperbolic. When the Rayleigh number is increased, mixing is increasingly complete before the flow becomes quasi-periodic in time. The Eulerian description considers the transition to chaos via the numerical identification of attractors and their associated bifurcations when the Rayleigh number is varied. Two main routes are found depending on the symmetries associated with the first two Hopf bifurcations of the system. A total of thirty three different regimes are identified from steady to hyperchaotic, among which two- and three-frequency tori as well as intermittent dynamics. Both quantitative and qualitative bifurcation diagrams are suggested for the system

Full textMany passive control strategies have been recently proposed for reducing drag in wall-bounded shearflows. Among them, underwater SuperHydrophobic Surfaces (SHS) have proven to be capable of dramaticallyreducing the skin friction of a liquid flowing on top of them, due to the presence of gas bubbles trapped within thesurface nano-sculptures. In specific geometrical and thermodynamical conditions for which wetting transition isavoided (in particular, when the roughness elements characterizing the SHS are several orders of magnitude smallerthan the overlying flow), the so-called ’Lotus effect’ is achieved, for which the flow appears to slip on the surfacewith a non zero velocity. In this framework, we propose to study, by means of numerical simulations, the influence ofSHS on laminar-turbulent transition in a channel flow. To do so we have performed a series of direct numericalsimulations (DNS), from the laminar to the fully turbulent state, covering the majority of transition scenarios knownin the literature, as well as local and global stability analysis so to determine the influence of SHS onto the initialstages of the process. While the conditions for observing controlled K-type transition in a temporal channel flow arewell defined, this is not the case for uncontrolled ones. To this end, a novel theoretical numerical framework has beendeveloped so to enable the observation of natural transition in wall-bounded flows. This method, similarly to theFree-Stream-Turbulence framework available for the boundary layer flow, is capable of triggering uncontrolledtransition t hrough flow receptivity to a purpose-built forcing. Different surface modellings for the superhydrophobicsurfaces are tested. First, homogeneous slip conditions are used. Then, the spatial heterogeneity of the SHS has beenconsidered by modelling it as a flat surface with alternating slip no-slip boundary conditions. Finally, the dynamics ofeach microscopic liquid-gas free-surface has been taken into account by means of a fully coupled fluid-structuresolver, using an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation. We show that while SHS are ineffective in controllingtransition in noisy environment , they can strongly delay transition to turbulence for the K-type scenario . Thisbehaviour results from the balance of two opposing effects. On one hand slippery surfaces inhibit the development ofcharacteristic hairpin vortices by altering the vortex stretching-tilting process. On the other hand, the movement ofthe gas-liquid free-surfaces interacts with the overlying coherent structures, producing wall-normal velocities thatenhance the sweep-ejection process, leading to a rapid formation of hairpin-like head vortices. Thus, whenconsidering flat interfaces transition time is strongly increased, while taking into account the interface dynamicsinduces smaller changes with respect to the no-slip case, indicating the need for an appropriate modelling of SHS fortransition delay purposes

Full textOur research is focused on the problems of transition towards a market economy in vietnam. It emphasizes particularly on the specificity of vietnam to be both a centrally planned economy and a developing country. Three axis have been defined in purpose to limit the field of research. The first one concerns the difficulties of macro-economic stabilization in the context of transition. The comparison between eastern europe and vietnam suggests that the rythm, sequencing and extent of reforms of transition towards a market economy can influence the macro-economic stability. The second axis of research is focused specifically on the problem of financing the transition. More exactly, the caracteristics of vietnam as a developing country tend to accentuate the difficulties : low rates of saving and investment, under-development of the financial and banking system, limited access to external finance. That's why vietnam can draw many lessons from the experience of china in resolving the problem of saving-investment equilibrium. The third axis gives attention to the role of foreign direct investment and opening economy on development and growth. Like many other developing countries, vietnam has activally encouraged the flows of foreign direct investment in order to accelerate the industrialization process and to modernize the national economy

Full textThis experimental study is devoted to the characterization of different processes of transition to turbulence in a flow between a stationary disk and a rotating disk whose the rotation rate is W. When the two disks are sufficiently close, the basic flow is of "torsional Couette" type : the boundary yers are joined. When W is increased, an instability appears with the development of periodic spirals. Forigher values of W, defects appear in these spirals. The acquisition of spatiotemporal diagrams on a radius allows to analyze statistically this regime of turbulence of defects. A Poissonian law cCharacterize the number of defects at the threshold of this regime. By increasing W, the distance between defects decreases and turbulent spirals develop. Those generate spatiotemporal intermittency, analyzed within the framework of critical phenomenon. Although these spirals disappear beyond a certain value of W, critical exponents similar to those obtained in other experiments are measured on the increasing part of the turbulent fraction. For greater values of W, very localized structures appear and invade the flow. When the two disks are spaced enough, the basic flow is of Batchelor type~: the boundary layers are separated. In this configuration, two spiral lattices interact in a non linear way, and the flow is more and more disordered when W is increased. Biorthogonal decomposition of spatiotemporal signals leads to eigen modes which generate a phase space where the analysis of the trajectories allows to detect a torus doubling bifurcation

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the experimental study of the subcritical transition to turbulence in the plane Poiseuille flow. Experiments are carried out in a large aspect ratio hydrodynamic channel built during this work. We first show that the threshold for the onset of turbulence follows a power law with respect to the Reynolds number with an exponent equal to -1. We then study the genesis of a turbulent spot using time-resolved particle-image velocimetry and shows that its development is accompanied by a deformation of the flow at a large scale. We characterized the three-dimensional structure of this large-scale flow and show that this flow is the superposition of two dipoles, the first one centered on the leading edge of the spot and in the center of the channel, and the second dipole centered on the trailing edge and close to the walls. The three-dimensional velocity field inside a turbulent spot is reconstructed by means of a Taylor hypothesis and we observe travelling-wave-like structures similar to non-trivial invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation computed using direct numerical simulation. Finally, we eventually compare our experimental data to a non-linear, reaction-diffusion-advection, low-order model in one dimension. We then extend this model to two dimensions and reproduce the main features of shear flow transition: spot lifetime, spot splitting time and appearance of large-scale banded patterns. Last, we propose a new experimental set-up equivalent to an "infinite" channel

Full textThe thesis follows simultaneously two main analytical topics. Firstly, it develops a theoretical analysis of information and secondly it analyses the informational problem of centrally planned economies. The purchased aim is an insight into the challenge posed by the transition from a centralized to a decentralized system of information. The first part is a critical analysis of the informational and communicational systems of the centrally planned economies. It points out the deficiency of the existing analyses concerning biased information or quality of the exchanged messages. The second part focusses on the theoretical developments on information in centrally planned economy. The neoclassical hypotheses on information are discussed though the analysis of market socialism models. Through the study of hayekian critics of socialism, the austrain approach of the information is then discussed. In the third part the author proposes a more personal analysis of information and of the logics and deficiencies of the centrally planned economies. In disruption with the objectivist informational approach, the analysis differenciates the exchanged data (indices), the signal and the meaning information. Linguistics and phenomenology are then helpful to define information and to understand its origin in a system

Full textRelying on the sluggish world economy during the last decade, debt crisis and the coming of structural adjustment programs being major tests for the labor markets of developing economies, this thesis hinges on the following questions: how has the labor market responded to changes in macroeconomic conditions and related government policies? To what extent has government intervention affected the microeconomic functioning of the labor market? Particularly, are labor market institutions major impediments to the success of adjustment policies (or economic reform programs) in accord with distortionist dogma of the World Bank analysts? Did countries that relied more on consensual modes of adjustment fare better than others in accord with institutionalist dogma of the international labor organization (ILO) analysts. In fact, these questions raise an open debate contrasting the positions of the (World Bank) distortionists and the (ilo) institutionalists. Coming within the scope of this debate which makes up a framework and a starting point of this research as well, the purpose of this thesis is accurately to account for new developments in development economics. Our practical research agenda here is to determine alternative policies depending on settings and periods (i. E. "the era of (labor markets) adjustments" in developing countries and transition in marketizing economies of eastern Europe) in more consistent representations with reality and further allowing for country idiosyncrasies and different institutional arrangements

Full textThough present in many industrial situations, pipe flow of suspensions remains poorly understood. We have investigated in this work how this type of flow is impacted when inertia is not negligible. The first part presents the problem of the lateral migration of a rigid sphere in Poiseuille flow. We studied experimentally how the Segr´e and Silberberg migration (1962) was affected by inertia for Reynolds numbers up to the beginning of intermittency. We have observed that another radial equilibrium position exists for Re > 600. Experimental results were compared to the predictions of a method of matched asymptotic expansions. The second part is an invertigation of the influence of neutrally buoyant particles on the transition to intermittency. We observed experimentally that the smaller particles (Rep< 1) moved the transition to larger Reynolds numbers via an increase in the effective viscosity. For the particles such as Rep> 1, there is a range of concentration for which transition is moved to lower Reynolds numbers, and to larger Reynolds numbers above a critical volume fraction. We proposed a scaling law which collapses all data on a master curve

Full textThe first two chapters are retrospective. Chapter one describes the inconvertibity of the three eastern european currencies (and of the transferable ruble) as a consequence of their real inconvetibility. Chapter to focuses on the hungarian and polish reforms, attempts to improve foreign trade efficiency, by adopting realistic exchange rates, considered as a first step towards convertibility. The former could never be reached because of the constraints imposed by the command economy, which was never abandonned, and those resulting from the relations within the council of mutual economic assistance. Chapter three explains why convertibility is essential to the reopening of eastern europe, a necessary condition to overwhelm the legacy of central planning and to implement successfully macroeconomic stabilization. Drawing the lessons of the introduction of convertibility, chapter four explains that the use of the exchange rate as an anti-inflationnary device is a complete failure. Chapter five assesses the three countries foreign trade reorientation process. Though rocketting and absolutely necessary, because of the lack of significant willingness of commercial cooperation in eastern europe, it appears as fragile

Full textThe thesis focuses on the study of real road transportation and distribution pro-blems. The question concerns in particular the optimization of two different vehicle routing problems arising in the distribution of petroleum products and the transfer of containers. The first problem, modelled as an application of the multi-compartment vehicle routing problem with time windows (MCVRPTW), is solved by using a tabu search method. The same method is then applied to two other variants. One introduces additional constraints related to loading operations for petroleum products on the compartments, while the other one includes the ad-justment concept in quantities applied for. Moreover, in the context of an energy transition, we addressed the container transfer problem using a fleet of electric trucks in the industrial port zone of Le Havre. The optimization involves two levels : the strategic level for dimensioning electrical infrastructures and the operational level for constructing the vehicle routes. Only the strategic level is tackled with a research project thanks to a coupling of optimization and simulation

Full textPost-transitional adaptation depends on transition planning. However, many people do not plan ahead, exposing themselves to psychological distress following the transition. Thus, this doctoral project thus focuses on mechanisms underlying transition planning and attempts to explain individual differences in terms of planning. More precisely, we support the thesis that dispositional variables determine the processes that explain transition planning. Although personality traits are linked to reactions and adaptation to transition, research evaluating the role of personality in transition planning is lacking. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991), Beehr’model (1986), the Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994) and the Five Factor Model (Digman, 1990), this doctoral project aims to identify personality factors explaining psychosocial transition planning. It demonstrates that sociocognitive variables contribute to retirement planning from elite sport (study 1). Personality traits influence the planned retirement age from work (study 2). In addition, conscientiousness contributes to career planning among elite athletes through career goals and self-efficacy (study 3). Finally, personality traits predict career planning amongst students (study 4). Overall, this project contributes to highlighting personality traits as determinants of sociocognitive mechanisms of transition planning and further provides a better understanding of processes underlying individual differences in psychosocial transition planning. Finally this doctoral project demonstrates the need to individualize support to better assist individuals in transition preparation

Full textThe main objective of this work is to analyse in which conditions foreign direct investment accelerate the transition process in central europe. Does it help the restructuring of enterprises and help the countries to integrate the global world. The modest result obtained until now can be explained by the understanding the reformer have concerning the role of fdi. With a historical phenomenon, the government have understated the nature of changes to operate, but also the place that occupy, to date, the multinational in the world economy. The function of "assuming the transition costs" tranfered to foreign operators when debated is confined to political statements. A majority of studies omit, in particular, that the very concept of transition comprises a double reference being at the same time dynamic and systemic. This thesis fills the absence of economic debate while wondering about the nature of fdi and transition. It is shown that the strategy of the governments was carried out under the short term results constraint. This behaviour involved an absence of coherence between the various levels of transition, namely macro-economic, meso-economic and micro-economic, that this work proposes to rebuild. Finally, this thesis is an attempt to reformulate the problems of the impact of fdi on the transition process, whose original character allows a better appreciation of the phenomenon of globalisation on the economies of transition

Full textThe prognosis of childhood-onset chronic conditions has improved, such that more patients now reach adulthood. However, adolescence and entry into adulthood is a critical period that may be associated with poor outcomes, including gaps in care continuity and medical complications. Here, I first described hospitalization and mortality rates in youths registered for a long-term disease (LTD) before the age of 14 (N=1,752), relative to those with no LTD (N=52,346). A retrospective cohort (2005-2014) was built from a sample of the French national health insurance database, called Echantillon généraliste des Bénéficiaires. Approximately 3% of 14-year-old youths had been registered for a LTD. The mortality patterns by gender and the trend in hospitalization rates by age were different from those in the general population of the same age, especially after reaching the age of 18, which was followed by a fall in hospitalization rates. Then, using the same data, I showed that the prognosis of these youths living with a chronic disease, including mortality, was associated with low socio-economic level, as measured by being covered by Couverture Maladie Universelle Complementaire, a public complementary health insurance offering free access to care, delivered on the basis of very low househould incomes. Hence, overcoming financial barriers did not offset social health inequalities in this population. At last, one day, these youths have to be transferred to adult care. Moving to adult care is a critical time in patients’ follow-up that may lead to discontinuity in medical care. Transition programs are being gradually implemented, to prepare and smooth the transfer and support youths during this period. I performed a systematic review of literature (23 studies) that highlighted two aspects of continuity of care during transfer: engagement (first contacts) and retention in adult care once the first contact has been established. This review also emphasized the paucity of knowledge to evaluate transition programs in terms of care continuity. Finally, the results of this PhD raises many issues that need to be addressed, including coping strategies of young patients with high risk situations, and the role of transfer to adult care on patient behavior, prognosis and clinical practices. Studies involving patients with a large spectrum of severe chronic diseases, including factors related to healthcare organization, related to the disease, individual and familial, should be encouraged

Full textParents living with a child with multiple and severe disabilities at the dawn of adulthood are very insecure about their future and their child’s. The aim of this qualitative study is to know, detail and understand parents’ concerns related to the transition to adulthood of their child with multiple and severe disabilities in Quebec, Canada. Its secondary objective is to establish recommendations for the components to be included in a service offer for adults with multiple disabilities. According to studies conducted on the subject, psychological distress, significant stress for these parents and a desperate need for services which meet their needs are enounced. In recent years in Quebec, different groups of parents having a child with multiple and severe disabilities have spoken to make their distress heard. In this study, individuals semi-structured interviews with thematic content analysis were conducted with fourteen parents of a child having multiple and severe disabilities, aged between 15 to 25. Then, these parents were invited to participate in a group workshop, which allowed to collect their different opinions on the components of an offer of service meeting their needs. In addition, they were able to share their perception of the current offer of services and to design the one that would allow their child to flourish and continue to develop as an adult. Their remarks during this workshop were then subjected to simple descriptive analyzes. In addition, a separation made of two subgroups of parents; one who’s child is turning soon 21 of age and the other who had already experienced this transition, allowed to compare concerns, perceptions and needs before and after the transition. The results of this study show that parental concerns are mainly related to daily stress, heaviness of the child’s condition, lack of services and occupational options in adulthood, as well as the lack of preparation and support for the transition. Recommendations for concrete solutions are provided by the parents in regards of an easier transition process and better options for adults with multiple and severe disabilities, that meet the needs of families. Finally, it is suggested that social work research be pursued to further document these needs in other cultural settings and family portraits to develop more appropriate lines of intervention in social work.

Full text"Transition to democracy" is a key period in the recent history of Spain. This thesis endeavours to treat this period through the study of six contemporary novels (either published during or after the transition), by authors who are very different: Josefina R. Aldecoa, Juan Luis Cebrián, Miguel Delibes, Eduardo Mendoza and Antonio Muñoz Molina. These novels look into a period that goes from the 1960s, an era called "Late Francoism", to 1986, the year Spain joined the EEC. Moreover, the choice of this periodisation is the subject of an introductory reflection. These authors offer contrasted visions of these political, economic and social upheavals in a comprehensive manner as well as a look at the two most sensitive autonomy movements in cultural and socio-political terms: the Basque Provinces and Catalonia.Beyond their perception of the historical context itself, they ponder the transmission from the past and memory as well as the concept of culture and the notion of individual and collective identity. The final reflection deals with the History-Literature mix. Are these two domains paradoxical or complementary? Finally, do these memory novels also not give an account of an individual and intimate sensitivity?
