As people’s levels of stress increase with the complexity of contemporary urban life, the stress healing agenda in built environments has become more critical than ever. Previous research has demonstrated that linear and nonlinear shapes in the environment have an impact on human stress recovery. However, to date, most studies have focused on indoor and outdoor spaces, while research on transitional spaces is still limited. Transitional spaces connect the interior with the exterior and are ubiquitous in the city, such as plazas, open cafes, and urban corridors. We hypothesize that curved and l

Indoor transitional space is a popular buffer space between buildings’ interior and exterior environments nowadays. Maintaining a comfortable indoor thermal comfort for transitional spaces often poses challenges to building designers and engineers. Some existing studies have already explored this topic, but they are mainly carried out in academic buildings. There are, however, still many other types of buildings containing transitional space, including entertainment buildings such as theaters and tourist centers. A transition zone forms at the attachment of tendon to bone during post-natal development [1]. We previously showed that this transitional tissue reduces stress concentrations at the insertion and hence reduces the risk for failure [2]. During tendon-to-bone healing, on the other hand, a transition zone does not develop at the interface [3]. Unlike development, inferior scar tissue fills the repair site and the repair is prone to rupture at the attachment. Understanding the development of the insertion will allow us to develop solutions to augment tendon-to-bone healing.

Abstract:
Transition is difficult for everyone, but it is particularly challenging for youth with disabilities and their families. When these youth transition out of school to post school environments, they will move from a structured environment with clear daily routines, with school personnel who are tasked to teach and support them, to environments where ongoing support and services are not readily available. Some of these youth with disabilities enter work environments that can be impersonal and most of them are unprepared for the level of independence that is required of them (Sitlington, Frank, &a

As research continues into how fire department interventions affect fire dynamics in the modern fire environment, questions continue to arise on the impact and implications of interior versus exterior fire attack on both occupant survivability and firefighter safety. This knowledge gap and lack of previous research into the impact of fire streams has driven the need for further research into fire department interventions at structure fires with a focus on hose streams and suppression tactics. As the third report in the project “Impact of Fire Attack Utilizing Interior and Exterior Streams on F

As the global shift towards a low-carbon economy accelerates, demand for critical minerals is projected to soar, intensifying pressures on supply chains and local environments. Policies like the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act and the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act are increasingly proposed to secure mineral access while upholding environmental standards and reducing ecological impacts. However, mining activities face significant civil resistance worldwide. This paper reveals that opposition to mineral extraction is a pervasive global phenomenon, spanning diverse sociopolitical conte

The accelerating impacts of climate change, the need to adapt to changing economic and political realities, and the recent energy crisis have made the green transition something that most Nordic citizens acknowledge. However, especially rural areas and their communities are at risk of being reduced to passive instruments of national green transition measures featuring heavy land-use. These conditions make it very difficult to create a sense of justness in green transitions, leading to growing sense of alienation and resentment and putting the national climate goals in danger.
