Abstract:
My thesis is an exploration of sacred space in architecture. The vehicle for this exploration is a homeless mission and transitional shelter in Alexandria, Virginia. Homelessness is a constant battle for both individuals and communities, precipitating disjointed and fragmented lives. I hoped to design a dignified urban dwelling where man is able to remember who he is, his purpose, and his direction, while also participating in healthy and fruitful community.

Abstract:

Homeless women have unique gendered needs that require additional resources such as supportive services programming in the Los Angeles area. Research reflects the high rates of physical and sexual trauma experienced by homeless women often leading to severe mental illness or substance abuse dependency. The purpose of this grant writing project was to seek funding for a transitional shelter program as an extended residential component to the Downtown Women's Center's (DWC) programming to be requested from the Ahmanson Foundation. The DWC offers daytime drop in services and permanent housing for homeless women in Los Angeles. The mission of the proposed transitional shelter program is to serve, educate, and prepare homeless women as they transition from homelessness to housing. The actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not required for the successful completion of this project.

Abstract:
The aim of the dissertation is to present the issue of post-catastrophic reconstruction of and and dwellings with focus on temporary forms of housing. Given the complexity of the topic, various aspects are presented, from mobile houses, the basics of environmentalism and foreign aid through temporary post-catastrophic dwellings and constructions to assessment databases of temporary post-catastrophic constructions. Observation is focused mainly on constructions and shelters built shortly after the catastrophe. Based on the study of manuals, directives, post-catastrophic reports and analyses of constructions for emergency situations, a hypothesis was created that determines the factors for the success of mobile houses in post-catastrophic conditions. The crucial factors are: transportability, efficiency, versatility, adaptability to the place of catastrophe and development in time. The hypothesis was verified on a sample of 17 selected mobile houses and on student´s works. The contribution of this dissertation is global evaluation of the issue of post-catastrophic reconstruction from several points of view, formulation of three areas of current mobile and basic types of transitional shelters, the description of post-disaster reconstruction of land and dwellings.

Abstract:
There is an ongoing argument that the settlement services provided to asylum seekers in Canada are inadequate. However, the contribution of these services in general and that of shelter services has not been researched. This study sought to examine the contribution of emergency and temporary shelter services to the independent living of asylum seekers in Montreal. Using a qualitative approach, data was generated from 10 participants (service providers and former service users) of Montreal shelter. The major contribution of the Montreal shelter services was the development of social networks which former residents used to access employment and housing. Although the services contributed to the independent living of former residents such as accessing permanent housing, employment etc other external factors impeded their successful settlement in Montreal. The most important factor was employment related discrimination in the job market based on language ability, foreign academic qualifications and work experience.

This thesis seeks to tackle a complex problem - disaster housing relief - from the angle of architecture design discipline and attempts to find a logical approach to solve such a problem via an in depth examination of a specific topic - transitional shelter. The project addresses three main issues in the field of shelter design: 1) the need of transitional shelters in a particular disaster situation (the October 8, 2005 Pakistan earthquake), 2) the design criteria for the shelters in this specific setting and a systematic way of evaluating shelter designs, and 3) a specific transitional shelter design that is produced using the established methodology.

Kwon, Choul Woong. "Transitional spaces : the role of sheltered semi-outdoor spaces as microclimatic modifiers for school buildings in the UK." Thesis, Open University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.552794.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project was undertaken to achieve a better understanding of the microclimatic characteristics of the outdoor and indoor environments of school buildings in the UK through the mediation of transitional spaces. Improvements in thermal comfort outdoors around buildings and reductions in energy demand for indoor spaces are two possible contributions of transitional outdoor spaces located adjacent to classrooms or other indoor spaces. The effects of these two functions must be considered jointly so that improved performance in one does not compromise performance of the other. The underlying hypothesis is that the transitional outdoor space can affect environmental conditions in ways that can enhance both the outdoor thermal comfort of occupants and their appreciation of the space and have the potential to reduce the energy demand (e.g. for lighting and space heating) of the building. Moreover, while interest in outdoor pedagogy has been growing in schools, outdoor spaces are rarely equipped to provide for such activity. The microclimate of the transitional outdoor space as an architecturally potential space is therefore central to the ways in which teachers and students can be encouraged to use the space frequently as an extended classroom without adversely affecting the indoor environment. The project focuses on the architectural elements of the transitional outdoor space and aims to reveal its environmental impact on both the outdoor and indoor spaces, and to propose design considerations. Transitional spaces are considered mainly as taking the form of a canopy. Understanding the dynamic environmental processes impinging on these spaces will assist in designing spaces that can support functional use throughout the year. Fieldwork conducted at Effra Nursery School, London focused on the environmental performance of an outdoor canopy and play area adjacent to the classroom. Based on the results of the fieldwork and using well established computer models, simulations were performed to identify the influence of different parameters: that of having a canopy; the effect of the transmissivity of the canopy material (three transparencies 0%, 50%, 90% were considered), the operability of the canopy, orientation (four orientations N,E,S,W were considered), and location (three cities: London, Manchester, Glasgow). The combined effects of canopy transparency and orientation were shown to be critical design considerations in affecting comfort conditions in both indoor and outdoor spaces. The exception was when the canopy was not fixed but operable. It was found that outdoor comfort conditions in the transitional outdoor space can be enhanced by 13.8% by choosing a canopy of 0% transparency compared with a reference case without a canopy, while it could be enhanced by 27.8% using a movable type of canopy in the case of a south facing classroom in London. Daylight and heating energy demand, however, can worsen by 40% and 50% respectively with a fixed canopy, while they could improve by between 23% and 45% using the movable canopy. The fixed canopy with a higher transparency can help to increase outdoor thermal comfort in Glasgow, while one with a lower transparency shows better performance if facinq south in London. The work clearly demonstrates that the architectural design of the transitional space plays an important part in the resulting environmental conditions indoors and outdoors. Using established simulation tools in new ways this research project has quantified the combined effects of external canopies on occupant thermal comfort and on classroom energy demand for space heating and lighting. These have been documented for different canopy characteristics and different UK locations thus providing design guidelines for the provision of such transitional space in school buildings.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Under the Final Draft of Master’s, deals with the problem that emerges from the primary homelessness whenever there is a catastrophe that destroys population dwellings, expressing the need for intervention on the part of the architect in these matters which have been repeated often in large larger portion and deeply affect the man. The issues that will substantiate this work focuses on the role of the architect in the resolution on problems related to the transition to the permanence (essential requirements of shelter, safety and health) of populations whose territory is, or has been, affected by disaster situations and the importance of developing an urban plan that makes the transition from temporary shelter, for the reception of modular and flexible prototypes sedimenting and creating a community. It is assumed that the intervention of the architect in accommodation in disaster situation power conditions of safety and wholesomeness of the populations. Thus, the rationale of this work turns out to relate to research that proposes to identify locations in Lisbon and possibly a wider area of the metropolitan area, with capacity to accommodate the creation of one, or several campus that will have the aim of re-establishing a community. This campus will be built to be a temporary and to provide the essential for survive within a moderate time.

Hicks, Shirley Elaine. "Perceptions of Homeless Individuals Regarding Public Housing Use." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2827.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on how homeless individuals perceive shelters, housing programs, and their agents has been limited, especially in relation to the reasons for engaging in or avoiding programs. This phenomenological study explored the perspectives of chronically homeless individuals in Wake County, North Carolina, regarding shelters and housing programs, examining their reasons for using or not using shelters or public housing. Using Glidden's structuration theory as the framework, the research questions for this study were based on exploring the perceptions of homeless individuals use of public resources related to housing and shelters to better understand why some use, and perhaps more importantly, why some choose to not use these resources. Purposeful sampling was used to identify 12 chronically homeless men and women and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Data were both deductively and inductively coded and analyzed using a thematic analysis procedure. This study found that the persistence of homelessness is a result of a combination of homeless individuals' perceptions of housing programs' structural failures including long waiting periods for access to housing, unnecessary bureaucratic entanglements, and what they perceived as inaction or apathy on the part of program staff in response to requests for assistance. These findings are consistent with structuration theory. The implications for positive social change include recommendations to policy makers to consider the views and perceptions of homeless people in designing programs, including ways to improve access to public resources that may ultimately lead to permanent housing for homeless individuals.

Simzac, Anne-Bérénice. "Le dispositif des logements-foyers : entre politiques publiques et trajectoires individuelles." Thesis, Rennes 1, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016REN1G027/document.

Abstract:
In a context of an aging population, the issue of housing the elderly has become crucial. This PhD thesis, developed in the framework of a CIFRE contract (Industrial Conventions of Training through Research), tackles the issue of sheltered housing for people above 60, referred to as “résidences autonomie” (“homes for an independent life”) in the new French law on aging. It analyzes the transitional nature of such housing from the public policy and the individual points of view, through a political sociology approach and mobilizing the notion of residential process as a heuristic tool. The purpose of this research is to highlight the specificity and complexity of a housing model currently undergoing important changes. Our main hypothesis is that the transitional nature of sheltered housing is diverse and reveals the stress points the model faces. First, we discuss the development and evolution of sheltered housing policies, and present a European overview. Second, the hybrid nature of such housing, halfway between social health-care institutions and social housing, is analyzed and put back into the whole transitional housing offer in France. Third, we focus on the place of sheltered housing in the residential path of senior citizens. We have used a crossover approach, collecting viewpoints from the sector’s various actors –elderly people, professional workers, and public representatives–, as well as a qualitative method including interviews, observations and literature review. By doing so, we highlight the fact the transitional nature of sheltered housing finds its roots in the incremental construction of public policies. The transitional nature of these establishments is specific to them, and complicates their acknowledgement and daily operation. As a result, residents are faced with a linear housing model rather than actual residential mobility

Mitchell, Camille. "A Women's Place: The Design of a Transitional Housing Comminuty for Women and Children." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/4747.

Full text
Abstract:
Transition homes are critical sources of support for women and children fleeing domestic violence or facing difficulties with housing and poverty. More than just a safe place to stay, transition homes offer residents access to a variety of services that will help them to better their lives. The increasing rate of single women heading households and the rise of homeless women and children are recent social developments that reflect the need for transition homes. Changes in family lifestyle require a redefinition of the traditional housing model to involve sharing and providing services within a larger community. Studies of alternative housing indicate that some women would prefer to live in women-only housing with moderate design alterations that address safety concerns. This is particularly relevant to women who frequently wind up homeless due to problems with career opportunities or managing households on their own. A communal support structure can assist women with making new lives for themselves and their families in a transition home and afterwards. Furthermore, characteristics of the built environment influence personal wellbeing, social interaction, relationships with staff, and the impression on the surrounding community. This thesis explores the design of a transition home that integrates social programs and outreach services to help improve the lives of women and children in need. Through deliberate design choices, architects can offer an appropriate solution to women’s housing issues that foster independence, provide safety and give hope for a brighter future.

Temmel, Nicola. "Trans-forming women's shelters: making transition houses safe and accessible for trans women." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/12032.

Abstract:
For over two decades, the inclusion of trans women in women’s spaces and organizations such as transition houses has been discussed and debated by women-only organizations, feminists, trans activists, and the broader public. Drawing on an interpretive description approach, my research examines the experiences of transition house counsellors (“counsellors”) who have worked with trans women accessing residential support. My research topic and questions emerged from my experience as a counsellor and are informed by a desire to better meet the needs of trans women affected by intimate partner violence (“IPV”), and to help fill gaps in available research, information, and practical resources to help service providers meet the needs of trans women affected by IPV. Specifically, my research questions are: (1) what challenges, opportunities, and insights do counsellors experience when working with trans women clients, and (2) how do counsellors adjust and adapt their practices in response to these challenges, opportunities, and insights when working with trans women accessing transition house support? Using purposive sampling, I recruited nine counsellors who have worked with trans women accessing transition house support. Data collection involved semi-structured in-depth-interviews of these participants to gain an understanding of their experiences and perspectives related to working with trans women accessing transition house support. Consistent with an interpretive description approach to research, I analyzed my data by drawing on both my experience as a counsellor and through thematic qualitative analysis. My research finds that participants unanimously supported the inclusion of trans women in transition house settings. While the majority of participants emphatically stated that they did not respond to trans women any differently than they did to cis women, my findings show that how participants responded to trans women was informed by how well they perceived a trans client’s gender expression to match her gender identity. As such, my analysis reveals that participants’ responses to trans women was mediated by their unconscious adoption of a broader dominant heteronormative cisgenderist IPV framework that operates at both an individual and institutional level. My research therefore highlights some of the limitations that affect trans women accessing transition house support when counsellors and organizations respond to IPV through a heteronormative cisgenderist framework.
