The aim of this dissertation is twofold. On one hand, I describe the use of tense in the second language of the deaf – written Swedish. There is no previous description of this. On the other hand, I operationalize the transitivity model (Hopper & Thompson 1980) and test its scope. This thesis investigates logico-philosophical aspects of using either a non-transitive or a non-reflexive logic to obtain a logic of truth in which truth is transparent. It enquires into and rejects the claim that restricting transitivity of entailment to accommodate transparent truth suffices to make the connective tonk acceptable by arguing that tonk as defined in a cut-free sequent calculus requires in addition that the logic is non-reflexive to be uniquely defined, and develops a semantics for tonk based on models with two valuations which delivers a non-transitive and non-reflexive logic.

Studiens teoretiska och metodologiska utgångspunkt är systemisk-funktionell grammatik, med fokus på den ideationella grammatiken. Det analyserade materialet utgörs av tre läromedelstexter, avsedda för årskurserna 4-6, 7 och 8. Genom en transitivitetsanalys visar studien att mänskliga förstadeltagare sällan förekommer i materialet.
