Full textSammanfattning

Full textBackground: Sweden is a multicultural country where 14,7 % of the population persists of foreign born persons. People from other cultures can have different thoughts and needs that can result in that they have different expectations and behaviours than nurses usually meet. Differences in language and culture can generate problems in the nursing care. Aim: By nurses’ experiences describe factors of importance in transcultural nursing in somatic care. Method: The study was conducted as a literature review based on 12 scientific, empirical studies which were quality assessed and analyzed. Results: Factors that appeared to be of importance in transcultural nursing were difficulties in communication, culturally based behaviours and relatives’ participation. Discussion: Difficulties in communication were considered of importance to the patients’ participation in the nursing care. Nurses’ lack of understanding patients’ and relatives’ culturally based behaviours were considered to cause difficulties in delivering holistic and individualistic nursing care. Relatives’ participation in the nursing care was considered to represent a function that can favour all parties; nurses, patients and relatives. Conclusion: To be able to make patients a part of the nursing care when communication difficulties exist, and to enable holistic and individualistic nursing care to patients with other cultural background, the relatives’ participation, communication tools and nurses’ cultural competence is of importance.

Full textBackground: More and more people are migrating to Sweden and most of them will come in contact with health care. It is important for the nurses that they are equipped with cultural knowledge. It is in the interest of a nurse to identify the need that exists in these nursing situations, such as security and safety, in order to be able to provide a professional treatment and a good nursing care. Aim: the aim of this study is to describe the nurse’s experience of transcultural nursing Method: a literature review based on 15 scientific articles, of which 13 are qualitative and one quantitative, one mixed method with both qualitative and quantitative. The articles were found in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. Results: One of the major problems nurses face is the cultural diversity that requires the nurse to be equipped with cultural knowledge. The nurse's experience as a challenge, lack of knowledge, uncertainty, religion, difficulties in assessing pain, cultural differences, seeing the individual and language barrier are the factors described by nurses who care for patients with different cultural backgrounds. The fact that the nurse does not have cultural competence can lead to the relationship with the patient not being created. Conclusion: Cultural competence in nursing is an important aspect in the care of patients with different cultures. Cultural diversity among patients is one of the challenges faced by nurses. Nurses believe that the care of culturally different patients is a difficult challenge because of a lack of knowledge about the patient's different cultures. Nurses need to have cultural knowledge so that they can provide individual care when they meet people with different opinions, ideas and values about health, illness and nursing. Because of this, there is a great need for increased knowledge and training of transcultural nursing in order to improve cultural skills in nursing education.

Full textBackground: Sweden has become a multicultural country. Which may lead to communication difficulties between the nurse and the patient. These barriers can lead to misunderstandings and misdiagnosis. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe transcultural care and communication. Method: The study was conducted as a literature review were 13 scientific articles were found via the databases PUBMED and CINAHL. Articles were quality-reviewed, analyzed and compiled in the result. Results: The analysis of the articles emerged three categories and five subcategories. The experience of transcultural care with the subcategories: Patient experience and nurse experience. Language barrier without subcategories. Strategies for creating good communication with the subcategories: professional interpreter, family members as interpreters and bilingual nurses. There were difficulties in getting knowledge about the different cultures. The lack of communication led to the patient not experiencing involvement and autonomy. Interpreters and bilingual nurses was considered to break the languagebarrier. Conclusion: Nurses experienced lack of knowledge about the patient's culture, which lead to a fear in nurses to make mistakes and cause insults. The bilingual nurses and family members were used as interpreter, instead of taking in a professional interpreter. The language barriers created obstacles in the communication between the patient and the nurse as, for example the outcome of identity checks during distribution of pharmaceutical. Even the patients felt limited by the language barrier, as they could not convey their feelings about their situation.

Full textAim: The aim was to examine how nurses perceive Transcultural nursing. Furthermore, the authors wanted to highlight the quality of the selected articles sampling method and study group. Method: The study have a descriptive design that included 10 qualitative articles, searches were made in the databases; Medline and PubMed, and furthermore manual article search. Results: The results showed that nurses felt that patients from another culture could give rise to complicate the nursing process. Nurses experienced that patients' expressions of pain could vary depending on their culture. Nurses perceived that their Transcultural knowledge was inadequate and desired therefore a greater range of knowledge in the field of Transcultural nursing. Relatives described to often visit the patients in larger groups which the nurse experienced as problematic. Nurses felt that patient communication was complicated when language barriers existed. Irritation in nurse- patient relations occurred when language barriers existed. The results are presented in four headings: "experiences of"; difficulties in nursing, knowledge and education, patients' relatives and patient communication. Conclusion: The authors expect to care for patients from a different cultural background, but feels that their nursing education does not provide sufficient tools in Transcultural nursing. This literature study hopes to lead to reflection and discussion between nurses and other medical professionals in the field of Transcultural nursing. The authors are calling for a broader and deeper range of knowledge for nursing students and professional practicing nurses in the field of transcultural nursing.

Full textBackground: Culture is a concept that is individual and is also constantly changing. Transcultural nursing is however complex and includes several concepts. A multicultural society require high demands on nurses to be flexible in transcultural care. The goal is that the nurse and the patient must create a relationship that contributes to the existence where the patient can feel safe and have confidence in the Swedish health care system.Aim: The aim is to describe nurses' experiences of transcultural nursing in Sweden. Method: A literature review based on 11 scientific articles with qualitative approach that emerged in two different databases. Existing articles have undergone a thematic analysis. Results: After analyzing all the articles six different themes appeared that consisted communication barriers, education, person-centered care, gender roles and relatives. In addition, a number of categories emerged within each theme. Conclusion: It is important that the nurse sees the patient's culture from an individual context when one encounters patients of different nationalities, sexualities, social classes and cultures. The nurse should be sensitive and receptive to patient's different needs to build a trustful relationship.

Full textSweden has become a multicultural country which means that nurses encounter patients from diverse cultural backgrounds that in need of palliative care, this makes it important to examine the ability of nurse on how to deal with difficulties that may occur in the caring for patients in transcultural palliative care. The purpose of this study is to describe nurse’s experience in transcultural palliative care. A literature review based on 11 articles describing nurse’s experiences in transcultural palliative care. The articles used in the study are qualitative articles and has been researched in the database CINAHL, Medline and PubMed.The results show that communication has a vital part in providing a quality care for patients with different cultural backgrounds. An understanding of the patient's verbal and non-verbal communication is essential in order to create a good relationship between the nurse and the patient in palliative care. Using an interpreter requires that the nurse has the skills and knowledge of how to communicate through an interpreter in order to overcome communication barriers. The results show that different cultural beliefs can create challenges in transcultural nursing in palliative care. The nurse's knowledge of cultural differences is important in order to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts. The result also shows that awareness, cultural sensitivity, patient autonomy and the family, are the factors that are important to give a good transcultural nursing in palliative care. The thesis shows that nurses' general knowledge about cultural sensitivity, respect and openness to different cultural differences and empathy may be important prerequisites for avoiding cultural challenges in transcultural nursing in palliative care. The nurse's ability to provide care that is personalized with a holistic view of the patient's situation and good communication is essential in order to perform good transcultural nursing in palliative care.

Full textBackground: Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a custom that is performed for traditional, cultural or religious reasons. The increase of immigration to the western world has caused that nursing staff will meet and care for females that have undergone FGM. Lack of knowledge and practical skills amongst the hospital personnel treating the patients may lead to implications for the caring procedures. Purpose: To highlight genitally mutilated women’s experiences of cultural factors in nursing care. Method: A literature study with a directed content analysis. A literature research was performed in health scientific databases. Results: The findings from eleven scientific articles were placed in the predetermined categories which were: experiences of religious and cultural beliefs, experiences of language and communication, experiences of technology, experiences of education, experiences of kinship and social ties and experience of politics. Conclusion: The meeting between genitally mutilated women and western healthcare is often characterized by communication problems and cultural differences. Nurses’ lack of knowledge in caring for women with FGM causes the women to feel insecure, badly threated and may cause unnecessary suffering. Future research should focus on how these women wants to be cared for which can be of benefit to all active nurses.

Full textABSTRACT Background: In our contemporary society there have been an increasing number of people migrating to Sweden. Most of these migrants will at some stage seek medical attentions. Norms and traditions might be questioned when people from different cultures interact with each other; it is in the nurses’ best interest to identify and allay possible conflicts, in a professional way, in order to provide a good care.Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ experiences of transcultural care in Sweden. Furthermore, it also shows how the reviewed articles collected their data.Design: The study is a literature study.Method: Twelve scientific papers were reviewed and analyzed for this study.Result: The literature study urged the importance of the individuality of each patient in order to avoid consternation in either side. Moreover, the study showed the readers on how to identify possible cultural differences that could reflect and/or model nurses’ transcultural experiences. Nurses’ negative experiences of encountering patients from other cultures in Sweden were partially linked to their fears and prejudices; through transcultural education the nurses’ experience of transcultural care would then be positively changed. The result of the methodological aim proves that semi-structured interviews were most commonly used in the following study. Conclusion: Fears and prejudices could possibly create obstacles between patients and their nurses. One of the main sources of these fears and prejudices is the cultural gap between caregivers and their patients. Therefore, it is crucial for a nurse to have a holistic view while adapting their care depending on their patient’s cultural values. Nonetheless, further education and practice in transcultural care are considered necessary.

Full textAim: The study focuses on advanced trained psychiatry nurse’s experiences of transcultural nursing in psychiatric care. Method: The study was conducted using a qualitative method of individual semistructured interviews. Nurses working in psychiatric care could share experiences of transcultural nursing. Results: In the result, one finding was that nurses perceive differences oflanguage as a barrier in the care, because communication is central in psychiatriccare. Religious and cultural beliefs and practices may also have an impact on the meeting with a patient from a different culture. There is opportunity for enhanced mutual understand when relatives are involved in the care. They can provide more information as well as support to the patient. Interpreters are used to solve communication problems; however they are not engaged as often as they should, due to the cost. Conclusion: That nurses, to a large extent, have been able to take into account patient’s wishes and thereby been able to offer the best possible treatment optionsto the patient. The study finds that nurses in general need a wider knowledge of transcultural nursing.

Full textBackground: Nurses should according to Socialstyrelsens kompetensbeskrivning för sjuksköterskor, take into consideration the human as a whole, this includes many different parts, among those culture. In a increasingly multicultural society the demands on nurses to practice transcultural nursing increases. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe nurses experiences of transcultural awareness in a caring relationship. Method: In a literature review eleven articles were examined and summarized according to similarities and differences. Results: The phenomenon can be clarified by two themes with subthemes. 1) Communication with subthemes; Language barriers, Body language, and Interpreters and Cultural differences with subthemes; Expectations, Relatives and Us and them. Conclusion: To be able to give good care nurses need to see the unique individual and her needs. This requires that nurses sees the person behind the culture and has insight on its influence on human behavior. When this is not taken into consideration the risk of care suffering and defective patient safety increases.

Sweden is a country with a cultural diversity where about 300 000 Muslims lived in 1999. Today, the requirement for knowledge about caring for Muslims and the need of culturally competent nursing care are increasing. The aim of this study was to define cultural factors which the nurse has to recognize to be able to give culturally competent care to the Muslim patient. The method that has been used was a The Sunrise Model, which illustrates Leininger´s theory of culture care diversity and universality, provides a theoretical framework for the study. The results are presented on the basis of Leininger´s three cultural factors; cultural values, beliefs and lifeways. Factors that where especially important to recognize for the nurse were the perception of health and illness, prayer, death, gender roles, family, clothing, diet and communication.

Full textBackground In today's heterogeneous society, transcultural perspective on nursing is crucial when it comes to patient satisfaction. Studies show that patients who do not understand or speak the languages of the healthcare professionals have a higher risk of misunderstanding their own situation and treatment. Also, cultural differences in verbal and nonverbal communication can be a obstacle for good care. To promote and improve a good and equal care the patients experience needs to be explored. Aim The aim of this study was to describe patients experience of care meeting a transcultural perspective. Method In this literature review 19 scientific articles were included. The included articles represented both a qualitative and quantitative design. PubMed and CINAHL databases were used as well as a free text search to be able to find relevant articles which were able to answer the aim of the study. Articles were reviewed using Whittemoore and Knafls integrated analysis. Results The result identified five themes that were Patients' experiences of the healthcare, Patients' experience of the healthcare culture, Practical experiences of the healthcare, Patients' strategies for managing healthcare situations and Different prerequisites within healthcare. The theme Patients’ experiences described a spectrum of perceived emotions, from being satisfied and grateful to feeling of hopelessness, discriminated, worried and fearful. Under theme Patients' experience of the care culture perceived deficiencies that were due to cultural difference were described. Within the Patients' practical experiences, the experiences that the patients had in the form of access to an interpreter, care costs or information were highlighted. The theme Patient strategies describes that the different experiences patient have and how they handle their care. We also looked at Different prerequisites within healthcare that reflected patients' wishes and experiences that could contribute to a better care experience. Conclusions The study highlights that it is a complicated question that does not have a clear answer. It is likely that the experiences of the care depend on the conditions of care in a specific country, the type of care and the cultural background of the patient and the care staff's competence and attitude. The literature overview shows that the lack of information, communication and knowledge of the other's culture can play a crucial role in the quality of the care meeting.
