Abstract:
The new translation of the Book of Psalms is part of a large project to translate the Holy Scriptures into Ukrainian, which has been underway since 2018. The project has already translated the New Testament (the edition is being prepared in 2022), poetic books of the Bible (in addition to the Psalms, the Book of Job, Proverbs, the Book of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs), translation of the Pentateuch and the Book of Prophet. The translation of the Psalms offered in Theological Reflections is the first publication of the above-mentioned translated books of Scripture.

Abstract:
Children need a book that has moral values and provides opportunities for them to explore their imagination and their childhood world. Today, there are many translated books from various backgrounds in the world. Translated children's story books must be communicative in nature so that they are easy to understand and are able to attract children's attention, as well as provide a pleasant experience while reading. However, there are often obstacles to translation, one of which is cultural translation. For this reason, it is necessary to have an appropriate strategy for translating these cultural terms, especially story books for children. This research aims to analyze the translation strategies for cultural terms found in four selected children's story books from the digital library Let's Read Asia – The Asia Foundation so that the translators can take it as things into consideration to translate similar terms. These cultural terms are classified into five categories of cultural words according to Newmark (1988), then the translation strategies are identified. The author refers to the theory of cultural translation strategies from several experts such as Newmark (1988), Baker (2011), and Hoed (2006), some of whose strategies are similar to one another.

Abstract:
The missionary activities within the cultural life of Kazan region was related to book production, distribution and use. The authors focus on the book missions and, in particular, on the contribution of St. Gurias Brotherhood Translator Commission to publishing translated missionary books in Russia’s native languages. They analyze the repertoire of missionary books published by St. Gurias Brotherhood in 1867–1915 categorized by target regions and related strategy of translations of religious, secular, popular and educational literature into the languages of the Russian Empire. The authors attempt to evaluate the significance of the Translator Commission endeavors in the missionary and secular educational fields. The Translator Commission activities, aimed at the spread of Christianity, facilitated the development of alphabets of previously “oral” nations in the eastern Russian regions, and of book publishing in the native languages. The missionary publications of St. Gurias Brotherhood Translator Commission had a significant impact on development of the book culture of the nations of Kazan region.

Abstract:
The use of Arabic script (Pegon) in the Javanese books translated from Arabic has marked a certain phase in the historical dynamics of Islamic intellectualism in Nusantara and Java in particular. By these translation activities, kitab kuning (Arabic books) are no longer enjoyed solely by the elite kyai-santri, but they can also be read by Muslims outside the walls of pesantren. The various themes of the Javaness books translated from Arabic that reach across all disciplines in Islamic teachings resulted in the rapid growing of Islamic discourse in society. Cherishing nature conveyed within the translation books generated peaceful life among Moslems. In terms of educational contexts, these book have been used in pesantren, madrasah diniyah and majelis taklim as suplementary books. Over time, most of the translated books have now metamorphosed into Indonesian edition. However, there is still numerous Arabic-Javanese language translation books occupy modest bookstalls waiting for the loyal and unpretentious readers.

There is a dramatic imbalance of cultural output in the global publishing industry. English-language publishers are disinclined to translate and publish foreign language books as a result of the popularity of English-language books and the high costs of translation. Three per cent is the oft-quoted number that indicates that foreign fiction in translation makes up only a minimal part of the UK book trade. This lack of bibliodiversity may have serious cultural consequences. There are thus several national and international initiatives to promote the publication and cultural capital of works in translation in order to reach a wider audience. Book prizes are generally understood to have a positive impact on the discoverability of a title and consequent sales; winning authors, as well as those on the longlist and shortlist of prestigious prizes, can expect a significant boost in sales of the books in question. But in a culture where translated foreign fiction titles represent only a small percentage of books published, does this phenomenon extend to prizes for translated foreign fiction? This paper explores the—audience-building and sales-generating—impact of the UK’s most prestigious award for literature in translation, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (IFFP), in particular in light of the prize’s recent merger with the Man Booker International Prize (MBIP), and speculates whether this may help with the ‘three per cent problem’.

<p><em>Illustrations in books play a significant role in the development of the story by re-narrating the story which is also presented in linguistic forms (words). This process is a type of translation (intersemiotic) as proposed by </em><em>Jacobson (2000). </em><em>Also words being accompanied by illustrations help children to better involve in and understand the story. Therefore it is necessary to pay close attention to the illustrations and the relationships they hold with the linguistic texts of the story.</em><em> There seems to be differences between English and Persian children’s story books in terms of illustrations. </em><em>The study and investigation of the importance as well as strengths/weaknesses of illustrations in original Persian stories for children can help writer develop better strategies to organize their stories in both linguistic forms and illustrations. In the present study a number of translated and original Persian children story books were collected. All the books have illustrations which accompany the texts of the books. Then all the texts were study carefully, analyzed and compared with their accompanying pictures (or illustrations). Each picture was analyzed based on its relationship with the corresponding text. The results of the study revealed that there are significant differences in illustrations in translated and non-translated children story books.</em><em></em></p>

Abstract:
This study explores cultural representations and cultural adaptations made by translators in translated children's picture books. This study has two focuses. In the first part of this study, which is a critical content analysis, I examine the cultural representations depicted in Korean-to-English and English-to-Korean translated picture books, using cultural studies as a theoretical framework. In the second part of this study, I compare original and translated editions of Caldecott and popular Korean picture books to find out how the translators adapt cultural, ideological, and linguistic conflicts in the process of translation, using translation as a dialogic process. For the first part of this study, I found four categories related to the cultural representations: (1) a sense of belonging and societal membership; (2) constructing and challenging gender stereotypes; (3) constructing images of childhood; and (4) dominant visual images of South Korea/the United States. These findings indicate that the insider authors of Korean culture try to show authentic images of South Korea, using contemporary fiction stories. The Korean translated books also deal with various images of American culture authentically from historical fiction to contemporary fiction. However, a small number of books do not show broad cultural representations of both cultures. In the second focus of this study on cultural adaptations, the analysis directly compared original and translated editions of the same texts. The themes of cultural familiarity, adaptations regarding illustrations, completely different translations, omissions, additions, and changes of titles or book jackets were identified. These findings indicate that most American and Korean translators purposely made cultural adaptations in the process of translation in order to help target readers to have better understanding of these international books. Additionally, they did not change essential authentic features, such as the characters' names and geographic names. I also found mistranslations between the original and translated editions of books. These changes could have occured because the translators lacked knowledge of both cultures or of the deep structures of the stories. The implication section provides recommendations to publishers, translators, educators, parents, teacher educators, and researchers and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
The thesis documents the censorship histories of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Richmal Crompton's William books under Franco, and analyses these censorship histories in terms of the changing character of the regime. Previously unconsulted primary sources are used, such as censors' reports and translation proofs held in the Archivo General de la Administración del Estado at Alcalá de Henares. The censors' reports demonstrate that children's literature and translated literature were treated as special cases by the regime, and that censorship was particularly harsh in both areas. These findings demonstrate the crucial importance of attitudes to childhood and foreignness in the Francoist ideological scheme. The censorship histories of Tom Sawyer and the William books reveal some surprising facts. The William books began to be persecuted by the censors in late 1942, precisely the moment when the regime was seeking a rapprochement with the Allied powers as the course of the War turned in the latter's favour. This prohibition cannot be understood without exploring the factors which differentiate children's literature from adult literature in the context of Francoism. The books' peculiarly English character also had a vital bearing on how they were censored. The history of Tom Sawyer in Spain demonstrates the effect of literary status on censorship practice. Early in the regime, the censors generally considered Tom Sawyer to be a work for adults. From the mid-1950s, however, children's literature was inscribed as a special category in censorship legislation, and the censors began to view editions of the work as specifically intended for children. Tom Sawyer thus encountered censorship problems in the later years of the regime, supposedly more liberal than the earlier period. Again, these problems would be inexplicable without examining the evolution of the publishing industry and Francoist attitudes to literature and the child. The thesis also provides a detailed analysis of the type of suppressions imposed on the books studied, under the following headings: religion; love, sexuality and gender; authority and politics, nation and race; crime, terror and violence.

Abstract:
<p>The purpose of this paper is to investigate the process of translating a book title from English into Swedish and vice versa. I have investigated the different methods used when translating a title, as well how common each strategy is. By contacting publishing companies and translators in Sweden, I learned of the process of adapting a title from the source language into a foreign market and the target language. Studying 156 titles originally published in English, and 47 titles originally written in Swedish, I was able to see some patterns. I was particularly interested in what strategies are most commonly used.</p><p>In my study I found nine different strategies of translating a book title form English into Swedish. I have classified them as follows: Keeping the original title, Translating the title literally, Literal translation with modifications, Keeping part of the original title and adding a literal translation, Adding a Swedish tag to the English title, Adding a Swedish tag to the literal translation, Translation with an omission, Creating a new title loosely related to the original title and finally Creating a completely different title. In the study of titles translated from Swedish into English, I found eight different translation strategies; seven of the strategies were the same as in the translation of titles from English into Swedish. The one method that differed is called Translation with an addition. The study of titles originally published in Swedish was much smaller; and yet more variety and creativity was shown in the translations. The conditions for translating from Swedish into English are different since English readers normally have no knowledge of Swedish. Names of characters and places for example, are very likely to sound very odd to an English reader, and therefore more translations are necessary. Swedish readers on the other hand are generally relatively proficient in English since they are exposed to the language naturally in their everyday lives through for example, television. Therefore it was easier to stay close to the original in the translations from English into Swedish.</p>

Abstract:
This thesis looks at the problem of the differences between the MT Tabernacle accounts and the LXX translation in the Book of Exodus (chs. 25-31 and 35-40). Although the differences between MT Exodus 25-31 and the LXX appear to be a matter of the type of variation which might be expected between source and receptor text with their own history of development, the differences between MT and LXX Exodus 35-40 are far more complex. The order of LXX Exodus 36-39 is quite distinct from that of the MT; the LXX translation is also much shorter than its counterpart. In the past, the general consensus of scholars has been to agree with D.W. Gooding that the arrangement and brevity of LXX Exodus 36-39 were due to the hand of an incompetent translator. After a survey of the problem of the Tabernacle accounts in Chapter one, methodologies are investigated in Chapter two in order to assess the competence (or otherwise) of the translation technique employed by the translator. This methodology is then applied in Chapters three to seven as comparisons are made between 1) the MT Tabernacle accounts; 2) the LXX Tabernacle accounts; 3) the LXX and MT Tabernacle accounts. Since Exodus 29 and 40 do not have a parallel these chapters are studied on their own (Chapters six and seven). The results of each investigation are examined for any clues which may help to solve the problem of major differences or minor discrepancies between the Tabernacle accounts. One difference between this investigation and those previously undertaken, e.g., by Gooding, is that hermeneutical intertextuality plays an important role in discerning the nature of the translation technique of the Tabernacle translator.

AbstractJapanese Jesuit prints of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries bear witness to early attempts to translate both well-known and newly composed texts for the Catholic mission in Japan. The Jesuits followed various translation policies for their missionary project during the “Christian century” in Japan. After 1590, recognizing the importance of the book medium in Japan, they relied on the distribution of their texts mainly in the form of printed books and experimented with the printing of various scripts to represent the Japanese language. This article examines the cultural filters that controlled the selection of the texts to be translated and the manner in which core Catholic teachings were presented. It analyzes missionary letters and reports about translation policies and cultural accommodation as well as selected editions of the Japanese translation of the Contemptus mundi (1596, 1610), a popular devotional book. The analysis shows that the translation policies of the early Jesuit missions in Japan were highly experimental and dynamic.

The chapter discusses various forms of the minuet through European and Nordic sources. It presents the ordinary French court minuet and its practice as well as several other minuet forms. The examples of the Nordic sources containing a remarkable amount of information on the minuet are a Norwegian manuscript from around 1750, dance books by Swedish dancing master Sven Henrik Walcke, Swiss dancing master J.J. Martinet’s dance book from 1797, translated to Danish in 1801, Danish dancing masters Pierre Jean Laurent’s and Jørgen Gad Lund’s dance books from the early nineteenth century, as well as Norwegian dance teacher Janny Isachsen’s dance manual from 1886.

Although the late-eighteenth-century Dutch market for children’s books was reliant on international examples, it was also a space for the development and dissemination of innovative forms of education by Dutch authors in the Dutch Republic and beyond. Focusing on girls’ books as one segment of the market, this chapter demonstrates that many progressive girls’ books from abroad were translated into Dutch, serving as manifestations of a hierarchically organized educational process involving girls and adult women. The Dutch, however, also reshaped these examples by developing an innovative epistolary model that enabled girls to find their own voices and to educate one another. This model, in turn, exerted an impact on international book production. The chapter argues that Dutch girls’ books fostered the development of peer education among girls through continuous and sophisticated transnational interactions with international markets.

Before the British Copyright Act of 1710 was extended to Ireland in 1801, its book market was dominated by British works, reprinted by Irish booksellers. Rather than being mere copies of the original, many of these were hibernicized, or made Irish. This chapter addresses the transnational phenomenon of culturally translated books issued in Ireland in the eighteenth century. It focusses on the Dublin bookseller James Hoey Junior, especially on his hibernicized version of John Newbery’s 1750 encyclopedia for children, A Museum for Young Gentlemen and Ladies, and reviews the sociopolitical context in which it was created. The chapter probes the blend of commercial and patriotic interests behind Hoey’s hibernicization, and aims to ascertain the degree to which his own cultural and religious affiliations are evident in his version for young Irish readers.

This paper argues that linguistic impoliteness in British and Irish children’s fiction undergoes some severe changes when translated into German. A novel system with five translation strategies is developed to account for the omission, weakening or aggravation of impolite utterances in the source text. In an analysis of three British and Irish children’s books and their German translations, it further shows that genre and publication date have a strong influence on the kind and number of changes to the source text. Especially older texts and school stories include a tendency to delete impolite utterances or use colloquial language which makes conflicts appear less serious.

This article is devoted to the review of translations and dissemination of contemporary Russian literature in China, which begins in the mid-1980s. It contains three parts. The first part presents the achievements in the translation and dissemination of contemporary Russian literature in China. According to the number of editions of translated individual books, contemporary Russian writers are divided into four ranks. Alexander Solzhenitsyn belongs to the first rank, who has 26 editions of translated works. The second rank includes 5 writers with 10–20 editions of translated works. They are Nikolai Leonov, Yuri Bondarev, Daniil Granin, Viktor Astafiev and Sergey Lukyanenko. The third rank includes 21 writers with 2–8 editions of translated books. For example, Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Valentin Rasputin, Vladimir Makanin and others. The fourth rank includes 37 writers who have one work translated into Chinese in a separate book. The second part of the article provides a detailed analysis of the main incentives for the translation and dissemination of contemporary Russian literature in China.Chinese publishing houses play the biggest role in organizing translation and release. Many translated works are also published in various magazines. In recent years, the governments of Russia and China actively support the publication of literary works. The third part of the article puts forward problems in the organization of translation and dissemination of contemporary Russian literature in China, as well as offers appropriate recommendations and tips for solving these problems.

The purpose of this study is to observe the overall picture of translations of Chinese literature for children into Russian language from the first editions to the present day. In addition to compiling a complete chronological list of all Chinese books translated into Russian from the category of children’s reading, our tasks included identifying and characterizing the main periods, trends and patterns in the development of translation and book publishing of Chinese children’s literature in Russian, analyzing the dynamics of translations in different years, analyzing the activities of translators who contributed to the development of cultural ties between the two countries, listing the names of the best illustrators, whose work played an important role in popularizing Chinese literature for children, identifying the main problems in translation and publication of children’s Chinese books in Russia at different periods. After studying the general picture of translations of Chinese literature for children into Russian, as well as taking into account the nature of historical events and political relations between China and Russia, we propose to distinguish the following seven periods in translation: 1779–1917; 1918–1949; 1950–1959; 1960–1980; 1981–1991; 1992–2013; since 2014.

Nowadays a large number of scientific articles, research texts and books have been converted into digital form and published on open-access web sites. Formulas are an important component of research works, especially in mathematics, in natural sciences and in engineering disciplines. But most of the well-known modern search engines do not implement mathematical retrieval of texts from formulas. A mathematical search engine could solve many problems for authors doing some research and also for educational purposes also. In this paper, an approach to creating a mathematical search system for collections of documents, including those containing scanned images, is proposed: software tools and libraries are selected that allow them to be automatically translated into a structured form with possible error corrections. The paper presents a method for constructing an index and a fuzzy search algorithm. The proposed approaches are implemented in a prototype software system.

Liu Renhang (1885–1938) was known as a Shanghai publicist and propagandist of Buddhism, vegetarianism and non-violence. Having been educated in Japan, he could not establish relations with Zhang Xun and Yan Xishan. He made a long journey to India and Indochina, talked with Rabindranath Tagore. In the 1920s and 1930s, Liu Renhang published over 30 books, mostly translated from Japanese and English. He published translations of L. N. Tolstoy’s short stories, books on hydrotherapy and yoga, and founded the Institute for the Cultivation of Joy in Shanghai (乐天 修养 馆). The main work of his life was Dongfang Datong Xuean in 6 juan, the creation of which was carried out in 1918–1924. The treatise was fully published in Shanghai in 1926, and was reprinted in 1991 and 2014. Its main content was to consider the classical ideals of Xiaokang and Datong, and the possibility of combining ideals with the realities of the modern world. Liu Renhang believed that the ideal of Datong Confucius and Kang Yuwei is fully compatible with Buddhist teachings. During the fifth session of the Central Election Commission of the Kuomintang of the fourth convocation (1934), he tried to announce at the meeting a petition on the introduction of the principle of Great Unity in international relations. In 1938, he created the utopian commune Datong in his native village, and tried to interest Zhou Enlai and Dong Biu with his theories. In the Dongfang Datong Xuean treatise, Liu Renhang introduced the “history of the future”, which was influenced by H. G. Wells’ globalist and Fabian ideas. Liu Renhang directly referred to his novel The War in the Air in conclusion to his own treatise. Like Wells, Liu looked with pessimism on the prospects of modern mankind, and called for the emergence of a “modern Genghis Khan”, who would ruin the world, on the ashes of which the sprout of a new Great Unity would rise.

Ainsi la version roumaine de l'auteur Le Corbusier sera le résultat de l'adition de trois images partielles: celle que forme la réflexion des idées corbuséennes dans les œuvres écrites des architectes modernes roumains de l'entre-deux-guerres; celle que propose l'anthologie de textes écrits par Le Corbusier, traduits et édités par Marcel Melicson en 1971 et, en suite, celle avancée par l'exposition de 1987, consacrée à célébrer le centenaire de la naissance de l'architecte. Ensemble ces trois tableaux font preuve des formes insolites que les idées de Le Corbusier assument dans l'histoire récente de la littérature professionnelle roumaine, et montrent les légers déplacements de substance que ces "traductions" engagent. Abstract: The paper focuses on Le Corbusier as author of books and looks at his inverted image such as it is developed in the Romanian architecture culture. The idea arises from the curious fact that the professional literature seems to have programmatically avoided him. In this paper, the Romanian author Le Corbusier will be the uneven sum of three partial images: the first is provided by the reflection of corbusean ideas in the writings of Romanian modern architects between the two World Wars. The second is given by the collection of Le Corbusier's writings, translated and edited by Marcel Melicson in 1971. And finally the third is that of the 1987 centennial exhibition hosted by the Bucharest architecture school. Together these three images testify to the peculiar shapes that Le Corbusier's ideas take in the recent Romanian professional literature and also to the subtle displacement of meaning that these "translations" suggest. Mykola Ivanovych’s creative informational and educational communication are reviews, reviews, reviews and current works of writers, poets, publicists. Such as Maria Matios, Vira Vovk, Roman Ivanychuk, Dmytro Pavlychko, Yuriy Shcherban, Bohdan Korsak, Hryhoriy Huseynov, Vasyl Ruban, Yaroslav Melnyk, Sofia Andrukhovych. His journalistic reflections are about memorable events of the recent past for Ukrainians and historical figures are connected with them. It is emphasized that in his books Mykola Hryhorchuk convincingly illuminates the way to develop a stable Ukrainian immunity, national identity, development and strengthening of the conciliar independent state in the fight against the eternal Moscow enemy. Among the defining ideological and political realization of the National Idea of Ukrainian statehood, which are mentioned in the scientific and journalistic works of M. Hryhorchuk, the fundamental ones – linguistic and religious – are singled out. Israel and Poland are a clear example for Ukrainians. In these states, language and religion were absolutized and it is thanks to this understanding of the essence of state-building and national identity that it is contrary to many difficulties achieve the desired life-affirming goal. The author emphasizes that any information in the broadest and narrow sense can be perceived without testing for compliance with the moral and spiritual mission of man, the fundamental values of the Ukrainian ethnic group, putting moral and spiritual values in the basis of state building. The outstanding Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda emphasized: “Faith is the light that sees in the darkness…” Books by physicist Mykola Hryhorchuk “Where are you going, Ukraine?” and “Freedom at the Barricades” are illuminated by faith in the Victory over the bloody centuries-old Moscow darkness.

Tol The goal of this work is to investigate land-use change at the global scale over the long run – particularly in the context of analyzing the fundamental drivers behind land-use related GHG emissions. For this purpose, we identify the most important drivers of supply and demand for land. On the demand side, we begin with a dynamic general equilibrium (GE) model that predicts economic growth in each region of the world, based on exogenous projections of population, skilled and unskilled labor and technical change. Economy-wide growth is, in turn, translated into consumer demand for specific products using an econometrically estimated, international cross-section, demand system that permits us to predict the pattern of future consumer demands across the development spectrum. This is particularly important in the fast-growing, developing countries, where the composition of consumer demand is changing rapidly. These countries also account for an increasing share of global economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions. Consumer demand is translated into derived demands for land through a set of sectoral production functions that differentiate the demand for land by Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ).

In January 2016, the book Gas no convencional: shale gas. Aspectos estratégicos, técnicos, medioambientales y regulatorios was published. As we pointed out in the prologue of the book, the study of unconventional gas is within the lines of knowledge of the Energy Chair of Orkestra of the University of Deusto. In fact, three main lines of study are currently covered. Namely Energy markets, Energy Industry and Technology, and Energy Policy. The approach to the shale gas study that the reader has in his hands, in our view, covers a wide scope of topics, including the strategic aspects, the technical topics related to the exploration, drilling and hydraulic fracturing, as well as the environmental aspects and the regulation processes for exploration. One of the characteristics of the research of the Energy Chair is to try to work with a network of institutions, universities and professionals with experience and knowledge in the specific topics that we analyze. In this case, from the very beginning, it was though that the creation and implementation of a group of experts would be particularly valuable, so an Advisory Group and a Reviewers Group were put in place. The relevant professionals and institutions that we have the honor to count on are reflected in this study. Given the participation of the members of the Advisory Group and the Reviewers Group, the first draft of the study was written in English. At the beginning of the project, Nerea Álvarez, mining engineer, produced a first draft. The English version was translated into Spanish and later, when Claudia Suárez joined the Energy Chair of Orkestra, she was fully involved to revise, extend and improve the study. In the process, we decided to focus our improvements in the Spanish version and to publish a book in Spanish. This study does not cover exactly all aspects and details dealt with in the book. Therefore, the document cannot be considered, in strict sense, a full and complete translation of the book, although many improvements of the Spanish book have been incorporated to the first draft in English.
