AbstractWith the authorized edition of Henrik Ibsen’s complete works in German as a focal point, this paper analyzes the functions of authorization in the 19th century, seen in light of the European publishing trade and international copyright regulations. Special attention is paid to the conditions under which translations could precede the publication of the original text, allowing the original and its translation(s) to be published simultaneously. It is argued that Ibsen’s oeuvre, conceptualized by the author himself not simply as everything he had ever written but as a continuous and coherent whole, did not emerge primarily in the context of Norwegian or Scandinavian literature, but rather in the context of authorizing translations and the planning of a uniform German edition.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘Self-editing’ refers to the practice of translators who edit their own earlier translations. Self-editions have been less investigated than retranslations. No attempt has been made so far to formulate a hypothesis concerning self-edition. Therefore, the present piece of research was conducted to fill the gap. The corpus of the study includes the modern Persian novella The Blind Owl written by Sadeq Hedayat (1903–1951) and translated (and self-edited) by Iraj Bashiri (in 1974, 2013 and 2016). The findings showed that self-edited versions appeared to be more target-oriented than their original translations. Therefore, although they appeared after the original translation, and could somehow be thought of as ‘retranslations’, they do not seem to confirm the Retranslation-Hypothesis (RH). The main principle of the tentative ‘Self-edition Hypothesis’ is contrary to that of the Retranslation-Hypothesis. It was also found that a self-edited translation is more ‘natural’, ‘accurate’, and ‘expanded’, but slightly less clear than its original translation. It should, however, be underscored that the reduction in clarity of self-edited versions was not so significant. Future researchers are encouraged to focus their study on ‘comparing strategies used by translators with those adopted by editors’ and ‘taking into account socio-cultural factors involved in the production of new editions’. Prospective researchers can test the hypothesis by concentrating on various language pairs and other text-types.

Abstract:
The existence of the Icelandic Book of Joseph and Aseneth was first brought to scholarly attention in M.R. James's introduction to Batiffol's Latin edition of 1889. Since then commentators have continued to include the Icelandic tradition in lists of translated versions (often by the shelfmark provided by M.R. James, BL Add MS 11068). However, until now the Aseneth contained in BL Add MS 11068 has remained unedited. This article provides an annotated edition and translation which presents the Icelandic Aseneth in comparison with the exemplar from which it was translated, namely Hans Mogensen's Danish version of 1580. Most importantly, the Icelandic translator, Árni Halldórsson (1630–1687), made an original contribution to the tradition, authoring a unique account of the death of Aseneth from grief.

AbstractThe standard English translation of Origen's De principiis, translated by G.W. Butterworth and published in 1936, is based upon the earlier critical edition of Paul Koetschau. Origen's text survives through the Latin translation of Rufinus, a version that Koetschau fundamentally distrusted: Rufinus had admittedly expurgated Origen's text and could not, accordingly, be trusted. Hence the job of the editor and translator was judged to be the reestablishment—as far as was possible—of Origen's original text. Such suspicion of the text led to, among other problems, the awkward printing of parallel Greek and Latin passages in columns in Butterworth's English edition. Greek fragments and Origenistic material—that is to say, passages that were not direct quotations of De principiis, nor even directly Origen's—were inserted into Koetschau's text based upon presumed doctrinal parallels between those fragments and Origen's 'authentic' thought.We cannot reconstruct the Greek text; what we have inherited for better or worse is Rufinus's Latin translation of Peri archôn, a text that the more recent scholarship of G. Bardy and others have significantly rehabilitated confidence in. With the notable exception of English, translations of De principiis have been made in French, Italian and German, based upon more recent and more balanced critical editions. The author proposes a new English translation of Rufinus's Latin text based upon the critical edition of Henri Crouzel and Manlio Simonetti, published in the Sources Chrétiennes series.

AbstractThis article presents the poetry collection Sandscript (2018) by José Francisco Agüera Oliver translated and commentated by Marc James Mueller. In this edition the textual presence of multilingualism, using parallel bilingual poetry, is historicized by the footnotes and the individual commentaries on translation strategies, historical references and word explications. Sandscript deals with the phenomenon that the commentary is dedicated to a text of its own time created through the editorial teamwork between author and translator. Focus is put on to the question of how this edition is presented and to what extent traditions of commentary cultures can be reconstructed in this edition, published in 2018. In addition, the article aims to present a perspective for editorial and intercultural collaboration.

European and Turkish translations and reception of works by Juda Tadeusz Krusiński SI regarding the Afghan-Persian war and the fall of the Safavid dynasty This article discusses the process of developing, editing and translating a Latin text written by the Polish Jesuit J.T. Krusiński dedicated to the reasons behind the fall of the Safavid dynasty and to the course of the Afghan-Persian War. The first manuscript was titled by the author as Historia revolutionis persicae. The Latin text, which was prepared in Rome, was then sent to Paris where it wasnot only translated into French, but also significantly modified and shortened by A. du Cerceau. The French paraphrase, published in 1728, became the basis for the English and Italian editions. Another version of Krusiński’s work was prepared and published in German by J. Stöcklein. He used not only the French edition, but also the Latin original of Krusiński’s text, which he had received from Vienna, as well as other sources. For the needs of the Ottoman court, Krusiński reviewed the Latin version, which was then translated and published in Turkish in 1729. This last edition caused a sharp dispute over the authorship of the Turkish translation between Krusiński and Ibrahim Mütaferrika, head of the Istanbul printing house. The Turkish edition of Father Juda Tadeusz Krusiński’s work complicated its reception in Europe even more, especially after the Turkish version had been retranslated into Latin by J.Ch. Clodius. The manuscripts stored in the Vienna library make it possible to trace the stages of developement of Krusiński’s work, which culminated in the publication of the book Tragica vertentis … (Lviv, 1740), his most comprehensive study of the Persian revolution.

Abstract:
PURPOSES: To translate and adapt the Clinical Evaluation of Language Functions - 4th Edition (CELF-4) to Brazilian Portuguese. METHOD: One hundred and sixty normal language development school children between the ages of seven and ten, half from public schools and the other half from private schools, both located on the east side of São Paulo. RESULTS: CELF-4's translation and adjustment to Brazilian Portuguese language showed equivalence between the original and translated versions, which demonstrates that there were no significant changes in the test's form and content. Cronbach's α test was used in order to verify CELF-4's subtests internal consistency, in other words, if every subtest measures consistently the evaluated constructors. In this analysis, we observed that by excluding right or wrong items, and problematic items from the pool (those different from the rest of the group), all analyzed subtest presented satisfactory internal consistency, except for the Word Association Task for eight years old. CONCLUSION: Most subtests, as well as the Pragmatic Profile and the Observational Evaluation Scale, were simply translated, dismissing significant adaptations. The alterations performed were due to morphosyntactic and phonological differences between both languages. CELF-4's translated and adapted version to Brazilian Portuguese was able to characterize the language performance in the studied population.

Los objetivos clave de esta tesis fueron explorar el perfil de los traductores involucrados en posedición, establecer el alcance de las competencias y habilidades requeridas, y sugerir una propuesta de formación válida que mejore el rendimiento de los post-editores noveles de acuerdo con los requisitos del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior. La tesis integró dos estudios secuenciales: una investigación basada en una encuesta que proporcionó información real sobre los perfiles y prácticas de los post-editores, y una investigación empírico-experimental que puso a prueba el modelo de formación sugerido e involucró a un total de 46 estudiantes de traducción en el último año de su licenciatura. Para recoger pruebas concluyentes sobre la aplicabilidad de la propuesta en diferentes contextos lingüísticos, el estudio se centró en 22 participantes que eran estudiantes de la Universidad Aerospacial Nacional de Kharkiv (Ucrania) especializados en traducción inglés-ruso, y 24 participantes que eran estudiantes de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (España) especializados en traducción inglés-español. El modelo de formación sugerido perseguía la adquisición de conocimientos conceptuales y operativos por parte de los participantes y se incorporó en un estudio experimental antes y después de la prueba. El impacto de dicho modelo se examinó mediante la evaluación de la calidad de los segmentos post-editados y las tasas de rendimiento demostradas por los participantes, así como las actitudes de los estudiantes hacia los temas relacionados con el traducción automática y posedición y la autoevaluación de su rendimiento antes y después de dicha formación. La tesis termina con una reflexión sobre los cambios que podrían introducirse en la formación si se utilizaran sistemas neurales de traducción automática para generar el corpus de formación. La tesis contribuye a la definición del alcance de la experiencia profesional de los post-editores, ofrece un modelo de formación escalable y describe hasta qué punto dicho modelo puede mejorar la posedición de los estudiantes universitarios de traducción.<br>The key objectives of this thesis were to explore the profile of translators involved in post-editing, to outline the scope of required competencies and skills and to suggest a valid training proposal that would enhance post-editing performance of novice post-editors in conformity with the European Higher Education Area requirements. The thesis integrated two sequential studies: a survey-based research that yielded authentic information concerning post-editors’ profiles and practices and an empirical-experimental research that put the suggested training model to the test and involved a total of 46 translation students in the final year of their Bachelor’s program. To collect conclusive evidence about the applicability of the proposal across different linguistic backgrounds, the study focused on 22 participants who were students at Kharkiv National Aerospace University (Ukraine) and specialized in English-Russian translation, and 24 participants who were students at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) and specialized in English-Spanish translation. The suggested training model pursued acquisition of conceptual and operational knowledge by the trainees and was incorporated in a pretest-posttest experimental study. The impact of such model was examined by the evaluation of the quality of post-edited segments and throughput rates demonstrated by the participants as well as the students’ attitudes to MTPE-related issues and self-evaluation of their post-editing performance before and after the training. The thesis ends with reflections upon the changes that might be brought to the proposal if neural machine translation systems were used to generate the training corpus. The dissertation contributes to the definition of the scope of post-editors’ professional expertise, offers a scalable training model and describes to what extent such model may enhance post-editing performance in undergraduate translation students.

Abstract:
This paper sets out to investigate and discuss what a translator may do when the source text for some reasons needs to be improved. The analysis is based on examples from a source text in need of quite extensive editing. This editing is called for to be able to present a translation that is satisfactory as well for the target reader as for the translator. To achieve this, the translator has to deal with a series of crucial decisions. One important determinant of any decision on part of the translator is, of course, the quality of the source text, which may vary a great deal. Originals sometimes exhibit flaws of various kinds. In such cases, what is the translator supposed to do? Is (s)he supposed to deliver a translation that contains the same mistakes as the ST, or is (s)he supposed to rewrite a poor text? The main focus of the present study is to discuss possible strategies for changes and to find support for the translator to work with improving editing in a text that needs to be improved. More specifically, focus is on looking at the strategies that are available when it comes to three specific problem areas, viz person perspective, author visibility and repetition. The study initiates a further discussion of the translator's mission – should it include making a brilliant version of a poor source text? It was found that the translator should not transfer language flaws that might appear in a source text with no stylistic pretentions, but instead produce an improved target text, even if that entails rather extensive editing.

Paul Solanges was one of the most prolific (in correspondence) and enthusiastic fans of Australian author Henry Handel Richardson (HHR). What was it about him that made HHR invest so much time in his translation of her novel, and to what extent can credence be given to the self-portrait in his letters? This thesis reveals his illegitimate royal background, considers his early career as a cavalry officer in North Africa and in the Franco-Prussian War, and describes his long career as manager of the gasworks in Milan. It also portrays in detail his other life as a translator of songs, short stories and operas from Italian to French. Finally, it compares his relationship with Italian novelist Antonio Fogazzaro to his relationship with HHR. A critical edition of Solanges’s correspondence with Fogazzaro and HHR offers the reader a privileged insight into the life and character of this Franco-Italian littérateur.

This thesis aims to analyze the supposed inevitability of a breakthrough in machine translation and the role that this breakthrough will play in the evolution of translation companies. It will analyze the changes that are happening and what repercussions those changes will have on the decisions made by students, professionals, agencies, and institutions over the next twenty years. This paper will be divided into three main sections: The first part will provide a background of today’s translation industry and consider the advent of machine translation in translation agencies and its continuous developments. In the second part of this essay, I will illustrate how I carried out my research inside Global Voices - a translation agency based in Stirling, Scotland, in which I have interned as Project Manager in December 2018 - to understand what use the translation agency makes of machine translation, also conveying my colleagues’ thoughts about it. The conclusion will recapitulate the topics approached, revolve around the main findings of this study and try to foresee what translators should expect from the future, how in my opinion they should deal with the changes the future will bring.

Abstract:
Emendatio vitae was the most widely copied of all Richard Rolle’s writings in fourteenth and fifteenth-century England, and yet in modern scholarship this important work and its early audience have received comparatively little scholarly attention. My aim has been to address this lacuna by producing an edition of one of the seven Middle English translations of the text - Amendinge of Lyf - with notes and glossary. In an introductory study I adopt a dual focus: Rolle’s intended audience, and the actual early readers of this particular Middle English translation. Firstly, I conclude that Rolle may have intended Emendatio vitae as a work of ‘pastoralia’, for secular priests, and therefore with a wider audience of the laity also in mind. This being the case, it demonstrates that the adaptation of traditionally eremitic contemplative writings for a general audience, so widespread in the fifteenth-century, was already stirring in Rolle’s day. Secondly, I look in detail at a specific crosssection of Rolle’s early readership: a translator, several scribes and correctors, and other early readers and owners. The striking thing about this segment of the text’s reception is its breadth, including a priest, a number of prominent lay women and men, and by the end of the fifteenth-century also Dominican and Benedictine nuns.

Abstract:
This dissertation comprises a critical edition of the Algerian author Maïssa Bey’s 2002 autofictional work in French, Entendez-vous dans les montagnes…, including: a translator’s introduction, a critical introduction, the translation, and an afterword. The translator’s introduction presents my translation methodology, which adapts Jacqueline Guillemin-Flescher’s theories in Syntaxe comparée du français et de l’anglais: problèmes de traduction (1981). I rework her communicative approach to convey the complexities of Franco-Algerian “coprésences,” or the coexistence of two cultures. I pose the question: Do readers need the same cultural capital to appreciate Entendez-vous dans les montagnes… as they do to read a standard French to English translation? This specificity explains my changes to Guillemin-Flescher’s theories. The critical introduction presents Entendez-vous dans les montagnes..., which stages an exiled Algerian woman’s physical journey through Provence to Marseilles. The three protagonists also metaphorically travel to understand their singular memories and the multiple truths behind the Franco-Algerian colonial legacy (1830-1962). I pinpoint the dualities in: the Algerian woman, a French Army veteran turned doctor, Jean, and Marie, the young granddaughter of a pied-noir. An analysis of their dualities, between conformity and rebellion, enhances the book’s political statements. I accent how a knowledge of Bey’s “traces” or multiple connotations of euphemisms, such as “soigner,” which means “to take care of the sick” or “to execute,” underscore these dualisms. Finally, I highlight Marie’s comparatively small role. The afterword presents how the translation process impacts Entendez-vous dans les montagnes…. I contemplate how to maintain the distinctiveness of Bey’s book, in which the figurative and literal senses of every French word communicate political and personal content. This style conveys politics in a simple, highly relatable fashion, partially due to the deep personal commitment underneath. Translation frames a text. It is a complex, rewarding challenge to provide this frame when the original exposes the volatile cultural politics behind the Franco-Algerian colonial legacy.

Student Number: 0110826H - MSc research report - School of Occupational Therapy - Faculty of Health Sciences<br>A comparative study was undertaken to assess the reliability of the MVPT-3 when the instructions were translated into Afrikaans and the scores were then compared to the normative data obtained during the standardization process on a normal population of American children. The study was undertaken by testing 80 randomly selected, normally distributed, Afrikaans first language speaking eight year old children from the eastern suburbs of Pretoria, South Africa. The study confirmed that the MVPT-3 is reliable when the instructions are given in Afrikaans with a Chonbach’s alpha score of 0.79 compared to 0.83 obtained for the American population. The item analysis revealed some anomalies that suggest that the test may have a cultural bias as many items had a negative sign in the item analysis. Afrikaans girls and boys performed differently on the test, suggesting that the test may need to be adjusted for differing skills in the visual perception. There were a high number of non-contributing items that suggest that some items in the test may not be valid for South African Children.

В первой главе анализируется дефиниция термина «визуальная новелла» (ВН), дается экскурс в историю возникновения и развития ВН, рассматриваются характерные особенности ВН, предлагаются классификации ВН и определение ВН как вида интерактивных электронных изданий. Вторая глава посвящена анализу процесса создания визуальной новеллы с редакторской и издательской точек зрения. В ней выявляются структурные компоненты ВН, анализируется восприятие визуальной новеллы читателем и его влияние на определение жанра ВН, вырабатывается пошаговый алгоритм и правила написания и редактирования ВН, а также рассматриваются особенности подготовки перевода текста ВН для выпуска переводного издания. В приложении предлагается перевод на русский язык с английского языка визуальной новеллы «Star-Crossed Myth» с целью использования перевода в русскоязычном издании. Отдельные положения проведенного исследования были представлены на Международной научно-практической интернет-конференции «Язык. Текст. Книга» (Екатеринбург, 2018). Библиографический список содержит 18 источников на русском языке и 54 источника на английском языке.<br>Master's thesis “Visual novels as a publishing phenomenon” consists of two chapters. First chapter is devoted to analysis of definition “visual novel” (VN), history overview of emergence and development of VN, study of characteristic features of VN, suggestion on ways of categorizing VN and identification of VN as a new form of electronic interactive publications. Second chapter is de-voted to study of visual novel creating process from the point of view of both editor and publisher. This chapter consists of definition of structural components of VN, analysis of readers’ reception and its influence on VN genre, formulating of step-by-step algorithm and rules for creating and editing VN, and also highlighting specifics of working on VN text translation in order to publish a translated edition. The application contains translation of visual novel “Star-Crossed Myth” from English language into Russian for the purpose of its usage in Russian edition. Certain of the study were presented at the International Scientific and Practical Internet Conference “Language. Text. Book” (Ekaterinburg, 2018). The bibliography contains 19 Russian-language source materials and 54 English-language source materials.

This paper aims at studying the Italian fortune of the Calderonian play Con quien vengo vengo , firstly, by focusing on its first version by Michele della Marra (1665) and then moving on to a triple textual comparison between the Calderonian source-text, the rewriting of Della Marra and the second adaptation by the actress Angiola D'Orso, whose first edition came out in 1666. Despite his faithfullness to the plot of the original text, the first translator remodels the text either by summarizing it, or removing certain typically Calderonian rhetorical artifices, or replacing the figure of the gracioso by that of the southern servant, who uses the dialect. On the contrary, Angiola D'Orso shows greater respect for the Spanish play, displaying more sensitiveness toward its rethorical beauty, which she is able to reproduce successfully.

A comparison of Williams’s and Ross’s respective translations forms the central focus of this chapter. Ross’s abridged and modernised translation which appeared in three volumes (1852-53) in Henry Bohn’s Scientific Library series successfully eclipsed the badly received (and by then largely forgotten) Longman edition. Its relative brevity, greater linearity and far lower price made it more accessible to general readers. Yet Humboldt scholars have ignored it precisely because it is not considered as comprehensive or authoritative. While this chapter acknowledges the palimpsestic qualities of Ross’s version, which carries glimpses of Williams’s translation beneath the surface, it argues that Ross’s edition recast Humboldt, and Humboldtian writing, in new and striking ways. Ross omitted his repeated emphases on processes, rather than merely results, and on failure as key to experimentation. Above all her erasure of his emphasis on intellectual sociability was responsible for cultivating the lingering misperception of the Prussian as a lone genius.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the analysis of some linguistic elements that pose problems in the English translation of the famous novel: El Lazarillo de Tormes. To carry out the analysis we have chosen the Spanish version of the bilingual edition (Spanish-Galician) recently reviewed by Rodríguez López-Vázquez in 2019 as initial text. The three English versions are the ones translated by Merwin in 1962, Frye in 2015 and Torres Aguilar in year 2018. Given the reduced characteristics of this format, we will base our approach on two concrete examples. The first analysis focuses on macro-structural aspects which are observed throughout the whole work and that we demonstrate through the Prologue. There are transmission errors caused by an incorrect choice of the initial text and as a consequence of that, a wrong translation of the texts in the English language. The second example focuses on an expression contained in the initial text: “San Juan y ciégale” and how it has also been wrongly translated into English. This paper finishes with our own proposal, a series of conclusions and suggestions for future research, and the mandatory references required to continue deepening in the field.

Advances in machine translation resulted in an increase of both volume and quality of machine-translated texts. However, machine translation still requires humans to post-edit the translation. This paper proposes a product-based approach of a post-editing (PE) experiment that was carried out with a total of 10 MA translation students. The goal of this study comprised both the analysis of the post-editing results performed by student translators involving a machine-translated text in MateCat and the subsequent error markup. By comparing the quality reports obtained at the end of the post-editing process, we analysed the linguistic quality results and observed a heterogeneous error distribution, considerable divergence in severity level ratings and a huge span of TTE (time to edit). This study aims at making a contribution to the integration of post-editing activities into the translation technology classroom for students without prior experience in PE.

The PENG ASP system supports the writing of textual specifications with the help of a smart text editor that possesses knowledge about the structure of the specification language. Specifications written in PENG ASP are incrementally translated into executable answer set programs and vice versa. That means the system allows for lossless semantic round-tripping between a human-readable specification and an answer set program. This functionality is achieved by a single bi-directional logic grammar that serves at the same time as a text processor and a text generator. We demonstrate that the PENG ASP system can be used to bridge the gap between a (seemingly) informal specification and an executable answer set program.

Abstract The tools and processes available in a given shop greatly influence the way in which manufacturers view a part and the way in which they decompose it into manufacturable volumes (features). It would be very useful to manufacturers to have an automated process planning assistant that would allow them 1) to specify their own, possibly special purpose, and 2) show them the impact that adding those tools will have on the way in which the part can be decomposed into features and on the manufacturing methods that can be used in the process plan. In this paper, we present 1) Tool-Editor, which allows users to enter their own tool shapes in a specification derived from the National Institute of Standards and Technologies’ specification for manufacturing resources; and 2) Tool-Mapper, a method for identifying the regions of the part that each tool can produce and generating a method which describes how the tools can make the identified shapes. If the first stage of traditional process planning can be viewed as translating features into processes, then Tool-Mapper can be viewed as the reverse process in which tools are translated into shapes. The benefit offered by tool-mapping is that it provides a mechanism for allowing users to input tools specific to their shop, without requiring them to reprogram the system, or to perform more knowledge acquisition to determine the impact of changing the tools.

For most Caribbean countries, the COVID-19 pandemic will translate into the deepest single-year contraction of real GDP on record in 2020. With the exception of Guyana, countries have experienced deep recessions, severe increases in unemployment, and long-lasting damage to many corporate and household balance sheets. The social consequences of the crisis continue to mount, and despite governments best efforts to buffer the shock to families, enterprises, and domestic markets, there remains a dire need for continued and more broad-based stimulus to ensure that economic capital both human and other wise remains intact. This edition of the Caribbean Quarterly Bulletin briefly reflects on notable economic developments in 2020, then shifts to longer-term issues, including a summary of an upcoming IDB publication, Economic Institutions for a Resilient Caribbean, as well as summaries of the book's key diagnostics and recommendations for each country. In some cases, country sections focus on specific areas of institutional reforms. For example, the Suriname section focuses on fiscal institutions, given the public debt distress there.
