Wawn, Amy. "The captives are translated, attached at the wrists' : a study of Antillean identities in the works of Édouard Glissant, Maryse Condé and Patrick Chamoiseau." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6799.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of the various interpretations of Creole identities in the French Caribbean, with reference to the literary works of three esteemed French Creole authors, namely, Édouard Glissant, Maryse Condé and Patrick Chamoiseau. Due to the horrific nature of the transatlantic slave trade as well as the arrogance of former colonising nations, the true 'voice' of the slaves and their descendants ? the foundation of Creole societies ? has been largely silenced in the official archives of France, and threatens to disappear irretrievably. The Creole authors I discuss attempt to combat these silences through a rewriting and recreation of history through literature. As a tool in analysing the ways in which these authors have interpreted the silencing and fragmentation of their histories, I present and discuss the metaphor of the transatlantic slave trade as an act of physical and metaphorical translation. More specifically, I suggest that the Middle Passage can be seen as the translation of human bodies and identities from East to West across the Atlantic Ocean, from their origins in the continent of Africa, to the Americas and to the islands of the Antilles. Secondly, I propose that a human being can be compared to a living, literary text that contains a wealth of cultural information, language and history, a text that can be subjected to translation. In order for this metaphor be complete, I introduce a possible translator in the vast system of the transatlantic slave trade, a professional that played a major role in the translation of African captives into 'slave bodies' for France. To demonstrate how these Creole authors have interpreted their past, I discuss selected theories on the translation of a literary text and compare them to the metaphorical and literal translation of a human being. I argue that the various ways in which the literary text resists or complies to a translation into another language may reveal insights into how the transatlantic slave reacted to his own translation into slavery. Secondly, I suggest that the slave's resistance towards hisor her translation into slavery may be seen to represent the resistance that Creole oral tradition displays towards a translation into the strictly linear nature of Western, written narratives. Finally, I conclude that translation can be seen as an act of resistance in itself. In translating their histories from oral tradition, myth and legend into written narrative and specifically into French literature, Creole authors display a resistance to the silencing of their histories in the oppressive narratives of the coloniser. Their literary works can thus be seen as alternative, 'conceptual' narratives that challenge the dominant, often oppressive narratives of our time.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. This Ph.D. dissertation provides with some contributions to the construction of a theory of paratext of the translated book. The theory of paratext is mainly based on the seminal work by Gérard Genette, Seuils, in which the author doesn t enter the field of this kind of paratext. Therefore, this dissertation aims at complementing the theorization by Genette, focusing on the analysis of translators prefaces/postfaces and, among them, of prefaces/postfaces in which translators talk about the translation and their translation project. The theory approaches employed in this work came from Translation Studies, Translation Historiography and the Theory of Textual/Discoursive Genres, based on data gathered in the research of a corpus compounded of French literary works translated in Brazil and published since the middle of the 20th century. The books selected to be examined are part of the collection of the Brazilian National Library, located in Rio de Janeiro, mainly.

Abstract:
At a time when scholars have rekindled the old debate about what is world literature and how can one study it (Casanova, 2004; Moretti, 2000, 2003; Damrosch, 2003, 2009), this thesis analyses the canonisation of Central American Revolutionary women's writing as it moves toward the 'centre' and becomes part of the world literary canon. Drawing on a core-periphery systemic model, this thesis examines how translation for the Anglophone market involves the marginalisation at various levels of the narratives of political radicalism and the erotic that feature in the life writing works of Gioconda Belli, Claribel Alegría and Rigoberta Menchú. The dataset chosen for this study consists of the Spanish originals and English translations of La mujer habitada (1988) and El país bajo mi piel (2001) by Belli; No me agarran viva (1983) and Luisa en el país de la realidad (1987) by Alegría, in collaboration with her husband Darwin J. Flakoll; and Me llamo Rigoberta Menchú (1983) and Rigoberta: La nieta de los mayas (1998) by Menchú. To develop this core-periphery systemic model, I have drawn on the work of scholars in the field of the sociology of translation such as Pascale Casanova (2004), Johan Heilbron (1999, 2010) and Gisèle Sapiro (2008). In the context of the study, peripheralisation has been reconceptualised to assist in locating the texts included in the dataset within a hierarchical power structure (external level of peripheralisation); and identifying the shifts that arise during the translation and circulation of the ontological and public narratives underpinning such texts (internal level of peripheralisation). The study of the internal level of peripheralisation will draw on narrative theory, as elaborated by Margaret Somers and Gloria Gibson (1994), Somers (1997) and Mona Baker (2006). The choice of narrative theory employed in the thesis aims to foreground the impact that translation and the publishing field have on the selection and consecration of a literary genre; facilitate the comparison between the texts and paratexts of the originals and their English translations, and disclose the mechanisms through which the agency of the woman/author is neutralised, and the narratives of sexuality, body, political radicalism and feminine subjectivity are constructed in the original and reinterpreted through translation. This comparative (para)textual analysis questions the nature of the process by which peripheral texts have accessed the Western canon. In light of the findings, the thesis advocates the need to redefine the concept of canonisation in order to acknowledge a possible conflict between the new assumed centrality of the consecrated/translated text and the layers of peripheralisation that might still be constraining the original narratives. Secondly, these findings draw attention to a gap in world literatures scholarship. By assuming the autonomy of literature as an artistic form, world literature scholars might be in danger of obscuring the potential for manipulation inherent in translation practice, particularly in spaces favouring domesticating approaches to translation. Thirdly, this work aims to serve as a reminder to scholars and activists not to overlook the impact of literary translation on the circulation of theories and narratives, particularly in the case of highly canonical texts such as that of Rigoberta Menchú (1984).

In order to place direct attention to the language of subtitles (Espindola 2010), this thesis explores the interface between AVT and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), analyzing the phenomenon of omission in the subtitles of the TV series Heroes. With a view to testing the methodological framework put forward by Kovaèiè (1998) and to comparing the results obtained from that study, this study investigates meanings translated out of the subtitles regarding lexical items omitted from the subtitles in terms of the experiential, interpersonal, and textual realization. The data analyzed presented 48 omissions of experiential, interpersonal, and textual components. Regarding experiential components, 12 omissions of Participants, 08 omissions of Circumstances, and 06 omissions of processes were found. Concerning lexical items realizing the interpersonal metafunction, 07 omissions of mood adjuncts, 04 interpersonal metaphors, 03 finites, and 01 modal comment adjunct were found. As for textual components, 04 omissions of continuatives and 03 omissions of conjunctions were found to exist in the data under investigation. Analyses based on the SFL framework reveal that a different construal may be perceived considering the spoken dialogues and their subtitled counterparts. Moreover, the linguistic construal of the subtitles may sometimes prevent the spectator from having access to certain meanings from the narrative being recreated or it may construe a different message being realized by the characters in the series. SFL analyses have led to the conclusion that the different construals the subtitles present impact on the flux of events of the episode in the same way that the goings-on were impacted by the omissions found in the data here investigated.

Abstract:
There is considerable agreement that the publication of Edward W. Said's Orientalism in 1978 inaugurated the field known as "postcolonial studies." Building upon the work of Said and other historians and translation theorists, who have written on the social and cultural implications of European colonialism, this doctoral thesis attempts to place the English, Catalan and Spanish writings of the Mallorcan Orientalist and translator Juan Mascaro (1897-1987) - in particular- his translation of the Bhagavad Gita for the Penguin Classics series - in their proper context and thus provide a more comprehensive understanding of the Oriental- ist/Eurocentric premises underlying his work. Though best known for his translations from the Sanskrit and Pali, Mascaro was also a prolific letter-writer whose letters, manuscripts, diaries and notebooks are preserved in three different archives. The principal motivation for pm-suing this PhD project lies in the realization that Mascaro has never received any critical attention in England and that an assessment of his work can contribute to broaden the terms of the debate over the question of Orientalism and Western appropriations of non-European cultures. The thesis is divided into five chapters, preceded by a general introduction and followed by a short conclusion. The first chapter examines the period Mascaro spend as vice-principal of a Hindu college in the British colony of Ceylon; the second studies Mascaro's Orientalist conceptions of Indian culture; the third gives an overview of Western and Indian inteipretations of the Bhagavad Gita and analyses Mascaro's reading of the text within this larger hermeneutical enterprise; the fourth presents a theoretical and practical study of Mascaro's translation of the Gita; the fifth and last chapter covers several subjects, but is mainly concerned with Mascaro's religious viewpoint and his involvement in the inter-faith dialogue. Although the association of Orientalism with Western colonial aspirations does not seem evident in the case of a Catalan-speaking Orientalist, Mascaro's writings attest to the universalist tendencies of Orientalism and are pail of this hegemonic European movement.

The study was carried out through an experiment with ten professional translators working from English into Spanish in the domain of software localisation. It was found that translation metadata – a set of meta-information elements provided by the tools about the translation suggestions – affect performance indicators such as speed, quality and typing effort. It was also found that translators spend more time thinking about how to translate a segment than actually typing or making edits to the suggested translations. The results of this study can help identify more efficient workflows, with benefits in terms of costs and quality for translators and their clients. Long, Lynne. "Well and truly translated : an exploration of the processes at work in Englishing the Bible from the seventh to the seventeenth century." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1995. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4253/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to open up a new perspective an the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. It offers the idea that the first complete translation of the Bible into English in the 1380's was not a sudden and short-lived political gesture, but the natural progression of a process which began in Anglo-Saxon times, continued through the Middle Ages and culminated in the definitive 1611 version of the English Bible. It hopes to set the Englishing of the Bible into a linguistic and literary context as well as a religious and political one. It takes into account the problems of retrospective assessment and the danger of attempting to impose modern values on pre-conquest and medieval prose. The early development of the vernacular from Bede to Aelfric begins the study of the process of Englishing; the wealth of medieval translations from the Conquest to Rolle continues it. The inheritance of translation theory, the mystical tradition and the theories of authority and authorship are discussed as a background to the Wycliffite translation of the Bible. The study of the progress of the vernacular at this point becomes a study of the development of English prose and includes an account of Pecock's works and the contemporary perspective of Thomas More. The Humanist element comes into sharper focus with a discussion of the rise of Greek studies and of the effect of the redefinition of the source text in the form of Erasmus's Greek New Testament. William Tyndale's position as reformer and translator of the scriptures is contrasted with that of the Wycliffites in respect of available source texts, distribution in the form of relatively inexpensive printed books and a literate potential readership. The Englishing of the Bible after Tyndale is traced through a process of editing, defining, layering and expanding previous texts which culminated in the production of the King James Bible of 1611.

Mitchell, Gemma. "Exploring how experts define and translate knowledge in the 'risk society' : the case of child and family social work." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/41074.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence based practice (EBP) has asserted itself as the best way to respond to risk and uncertainty in child and family social work, a relatively new profession with a constantly shifting knowledge base. Informed by a social constructionist approach, the thesis asks: (1) what types of knowledge do social workers use and what meanings do they attach to these; and (2) what strategies do they use when sharing knowledge within their epistemic community? Based on semi-structured interviews and research diaries with child and family social workers, I detect two types of knowledge the participants reported using, namely gut feeling and evidence. I identify the social element of gut feeling and that it is central to the response to uncertainty. I also reveal that the knowledge social workers associated with evidence is narrower than the EBP approach. I argue that these findings show that there is a gap between research and practice, and that the extent to which social workers are ‘comfortable’ with uncertainty is related to how they conceptualise the fact/ value distinction. I also identify two knowledge sharing strategies, conceptualised as (1) standard knowledge filtering (SKF) and (2) dynamic knowledge filtering (DKF). Users of SKF aimed to render gut feeling and the associated uncertainty invisible, whilst users of DKF aimed to keep uncertainty visible and share gut feeling with others. The thesis reveals why some types of knowledge are shared and others are not, the differences between social workers, as well as the causes of frictions and frustrations associated with knowledge sharing. The dominance of EBP, however, conceals such complex processes and differences. By uncovering and conceptualising them effectively, the thesis makes an original contribution to a better understandings of gut feeling, evidence, fact and value which are central components of constructing and translating social work to co-workers.

Abstract:
This thesis describes and analyses in three substudies how home-based measures for children are expanding and why an open care idea are established as part of the Swedish child welfare. The first substudy describes the national increment of what today can be considered as a treatment policy – non-institutional care in child welfare. The results are analysed with Kingdon's agenda setting theory and shows that the factors of what Kingdon describes as problems-, politics- and policyflow influenced the national increment. Significant mechanisms have primarily been, the profession, the society's concerns for socially disadvantaged children, negative experiences of institutionalisation and a political position to deinstitutionalise all care. The second substudy focuses on how knowledge and research contributes to ideological, professional, and organizational change in child welfare by analysis of Research &amp; Developments reports and articles from the professional journal Socionomen. Based on the neo-institutional concepts of organisational fields and isoformism the study's results shows that a consequence of adaptation strategies and "rationalized myths" are a number of similarities in how home-based measures are organized and which measures that are used. The third substudy, a case study, analyses how we can understand a local development of ideas in social services for children with concepts from neo institutional theory. Interviews and municipal documents are analysed and shows that the local translation of an open care idea is characterized by discretion, personal preferences and action and affects the choice of method and organization. The study also shows a political mistrust of institutional care while there is at the same time political confidence in the individual social worker's ability to find solutions that allow non-institutional measures to be an alternative to institutional care. An overall conclusion of the thesis is that there is now a treatment policy in social services for the children, which involves extensive efforts at home and it has led to that more children receive support from social services. One result of non-institutional care increment is that it led to increased costs for municipalities for intervention for children and young people when out-of-home care has not decreased. Another general conclusion is that translation and adaptation of ideas to local contexts is something that generally fits street-level bureaucrats need for discretion.

King, Daniel. "Cyrilliana Syriaca : an investigation into the Syriac translations of the works of Cyril of Alexandria, and the light they shed upon the world of the Syriac translator." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54562/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is well known that Syriac translations from the Greek changed a great deal between the fourth and seventh centuries AD. Many Syriac versions of the scriptures, the Greek Fathers and the philosophers were subjected to revision and improvement. This study looks at the Syriac translations of Cyril of Alexandria's Christological works and seeks to place them in the wider context just mentioned. It aims to illuminate their date and background on the basis of a comparative typology of translation technique and method. This also includes the use of biblical citations and parallel citations in other texts as important evidence. It is shown that the texts come from dates ranging from the middle of the fifth to the middle of the sixth century and can be fittingly compared with other contemporary documents. The findings highlight the importance of the few decades either side of the turn of the sixth century as the key moment when the Syriac translators developed a new vision of their language and its capabilities. This was the time of the most rapid change and pivots around the person of Philoxenus. It is also suggested that Philoxenus' own role resulted from his reading of some of these very translations and the new techniques found therein. In the first section, it is suggested that these technical developments are related to parallel developments in the church concerning matters of textual authority and systematisation, the rise of patristic exegesis and florilegia. In a final chapter, the study goes on to place this development in a still wider context within late antiquity and argues that this new vision of language use which we see in the Syrian church can be paralleled in a number of other walks of life and, in fact, represents a typical 'late antique' frame of mind.

The problem which excited the investigation was the failure death students face when learning to read and write in Portuguese. The leading question was: what collaborative work can the interpreter/translator develop along with the other professionals in school, as to help dealing with this matter? The final “Educational Product” of this dissertation is a virtual forum of discussion in a site called Espaço Colaborativo Virtual Permanente, which has the purpose of debating and exchanging the experiences of all professionals working in the specialized educational environments at school, such as interpreters, translators, teachers, coordinators etc. In order to fulfill this goal, during the investigation, the specific objectives of the study were to identify and to develop pedagogical didactical approaches, inclusive and socializing activities and flexible contents for classrooms which welcome death and non-death students. The interpreter/translator of Libras in these classrooms also performed as the investigator of this research, by observing the answers of two death students to an interview, an evaluating test with words and figures, and her collaborative participation in a set of classes. The main results and analysis, achieved under the lights of Vygotsky (2005), Bakhtin (2003), Quadros (2004) and other theorists, aroused some possible collaborative strategies of the interpreter in these situations: production of texts that present images which are adaptive and contextualized to the reality of deaths, use of interlanguage comparative strategies (applying Libras and Portuguese) which highlight bicultural and bilanguage grammatical aspects of the translation process, creation of videos and datitological reinforcement with visual signs etc. In the end, it was possible to conclude that the performance of this educational professional goes far beyond the simple task of linearly interpreting and translating contents, explanations and exercises from one language to another, and that when he/she participates collaboratively with school colleagues during the planning, preparation and application of classroom activities, the interpreter/translator of Libras effectively contributes with the cognitive development of death students attending regular basic educational schools.<br>A convivência e incômodo com os frequentes fracassos dos alunos com surdez na aprendizagem da leitura e escrita do português em escolas regulares inclusivas desencadearam a necessidade deste estudo de caso, cujo foco central é a discussão sobre o papel do intérprete de Libras e, daí, suas ações colaborativas que podem contribuir para a superação de tais problemas.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>翻譯研究所<br>95<br>Abstract The thesis aims at discussing the cultural functions of two English translated texts of the book Lao Can You Ji. From the two English versions translated by Harold Shadick and H.Y. Yang & G.M. Taylor, I attempt to analyze difficulties in translation for both Eastern and Western translators and their strategies while dealing with the source text from the prospective of cultural functions. The thesis is divided into five chapters. In addition to introducing background information regarding the source text and its author, the study also discusses the creative literary style in comparison with western literary genre such as satirical and detective novels. Consequently, the cultural function of the source text and its distinctive features will be discussed as published at the turn of the twentieth century. By means of different choices of translation strategies, translated works may result in varied cultural functions. With investigations on samples extracted from translated works, and discussions on translators’ strategies, it is obvious to note that Shadick tended to adopt foreignisation and Yang domestication in target texts. Their decisions determined varied cultural functions of target texts. While Yang’s version focused more on the acceptance of the target culture, Shadick’s version has established the authority of Chinese classics and aimed at introducing Chinese culture. As the cultural function of the source text may not be the same for modern readers, the two translated versions nonetheless created different outlooks for readers to enjoy one of traditional Chinese novels of exposure.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>翻譯研究所<br>92<br>Abstract Taiwan literature has recently become a popular topic in academic researches, which also brings about the more emphasis addressed on translating Taiwan. Since 1960s, translations of Taiwanese literary works have started and some anthologies of Chinese literatures simultaneously selected the nativist works of both Huang Chun-ming and Wang Chen-ho. Taiwan nativist literature aims to describe the characteristics of the indigenous Taiwanese people and culture, which best elucidates the special features of the islands of Taiwan and its culture. Looking back on the 1970s, Huang Chun-ming and Wang Chen-ho are generally considered as the most popular nativist writers. Most of their works are translated by the American scholar-translator, Howard Goldblatt. Applying Nida’s principles of correspondence (formal correspondence and functional correspondence), the thesis explores the translatability and linguistic equivalences of the translated nativist fictions of Huang Chun-ming and Wang Chen-ho. It also inspects various strategies and techniques practicable in translating Taiwanese nativist culture. In the discussion, the texts of Huang’s and Wang’s nativist works are classified into categories. The strategies adopted by distinct translators and the differences of the translations are scrutinized. Besides, the problem of translatability of cultures is also an important theme in the discussion. Highlighting the hybridity of Taiwanese languages, the advantages and disadvantages of each translation by various translators are examined. After the discussion, it is concluded that the problem in translating Taiwan involves too many aspects, whether it’s history, anthropology, politics, etc. Nida’s principles of correspondence can hardly solve all these problems. For example, the existing possibilities of un-translatability in languages and cultures, the involvement of reader’s interpretations in the process of reading, and the arbitrariness of lexical meanings are out the discussion of equivalence. Therefore, the principles of correspondence serve only as one of the guidelines adoptable in translating Taiwan nativist literature. In addition, the complexity of Taiwanese culture and languages in many cases makes it so difficult for translators to find equivalents in translation because of un-translatability. Since translations vary from one another, different versions of translation may help bring about the essence of the original. In the process of re-reading and re-translating, the core issue and spirit of the original will be gradually revealed. Thus, different translated versions of Taiwan literature help clarify the content and definition of it. Besides, translation critiques provide translators with encouragements as well as advice, which gradually improves the quality of Taiwan literature in translation. Translations of the works by Wang and Huang are mostly single ones and few critiques of the available translations have been made. It would be more satisfactory if more translators engage in translating Taiwan. With the appearance of different translations and critiques, the beauty of Taiwan literature will then be more appropriately captured and objectively revealed.

O'Toole, Kiera. "Beyond the pale Australia: the studio as site where notions of Irish national identity are translated into contemporary works of art." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/938804.

Full text
Abstract:
Masters Research - Master of Philosophy (MPhil)<br>This exegesis and studio praxis convenes within an Irish contemporary art framework to translate an embodied experience of being an Irish woman living in Australia. As a constituent of the Irish diaspora, my research evokes the sentiments of Irish artist Katy Deepwell, whose remarks about Irishness are echoed in the exegesis that accompanies the works of art: ‘our displacement, our living all over the world, our history of emigration, our psyche’. The impulse of the research is not to fashion sentimentality of a homeland but to examine the physical and psychological distances between the two countries through a personal and critical response to Irish national identity. The conceptual premise of this research analyses the West of Ireland’s position as the enduring site for Irish national identity. The research proposes that this model of identity, constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, lingers in the Irish psyche as the sacred home of Irish national identity. Given the premise of where ‘Irishness’ is seen to be located in the heartland of the West of Ireland, then my position of ‘coming’ from the East presents as a form of otherness or as an alternative way of ‘being’ Irish. In a landscape of ‘Saints and Scholars’ this dichotomy causes tension in relation to belonging and raises questions on the formation of a national identity. To this end, the West of Ireland plays a fundamental role as a place for a self-reflective journey, where the experience of diaspora as it relates to Irish national identity is explored and recorded. The studio-based art practice as research manifests through a series of material conversations to present a discourse that reflects and draws upon Irish and Irish Australian nationalist histories and nationalist ideologies.

Wu, Yi-shan, and 吳宜珊. "Author as Translator: On the Study of Amy Tan's Works." Thesis, 2015. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/xfyzq2.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立彰化師範大學<br>翻譯研究所<br>104<br>When dealing with translation, most people would consider language transfer as translation. However, most of them neglected that translation sometimes is hidden as non-translation. It is indeed when an author writes, he/she may rely on translation to complete the “original”. It is “original” on the surface, but under the surface, there lies translation. Though the process cannot be seen, it does not mean translation never exists. Thus, it is time to redefine the predestined definition of translation and original. The thesis will take literary works of a well-known Asian American writer, Amy Tan, as examples to shed light on the translation interface. Though she was labelled as author, the translations in her works could prove that she was a translator who exerted creativity in translations. Under this underlying translation process, Amy Tan made herself “visible”, and enabled the target readers to feel something different from their culture. Amy Tan, as an author as well as a translator, is constrained by the time and space, which results in rewriting and adaptation of her texts. Tan’s translations were not what traditional translation studies used to define: an equivalence to original source, a negotiation between languages and as two separate products. The thesis argues that her creative writing are not what traditionally used to categorize as “original”, but as translation. In this sense, the definition of translation needs to be broadened. The distinction between original and translation is hard to make clear, and what one considers as a first hand source may not be original at all. As a result, if the concept of original is deconstructed, why should translation be seen as a secondary product? The relationship between original and translation, between author and translator, and the idea of translation will be no longer stable.

Abstract:
碩士<br>輔仁大學<br>跨文化研究所翻譯學碩士班<br>99<br>“In-House Translator” is not an unfamiliar term to Taiwanese businesses; they’re needed at almost all international social events. However, most people assume that in-house translator does not require any specialty or skill, therefore they define it as a simple word for word translation job and greatly underestimate the true value of the role. Due to the importance of profit and loss aspect in all business deals, the role of in-house translator has become more than just mere word for word translating job. Besides sending out the message, the role of in-house translator stresses more about delivering the purposes and objectives of the message. Also, in order to meet business’ expectations, in-house translator needs to consider factors such as the employers and clients’ needs and preferences. On top of the basic language skills, an experienced in-house translator can present multi-purpose translation and successfully meet employer’s different needs. In-house translator also acts as a channel to acquire critical industry information. Moreover, being an employee themselves, in-house translators understand the company down to the last detail, which allows them to not just communicate, but to also execute every task for the benefit of the company and to create more business opportunities. This is the irreplaceable role of the in-house translator. Due to the fact that in-house translators are under valued in Taiwan, there are few researches being conducted on in-house translators, not to even mention study being done on the actual work content of it. Therefore, this study will inspect the in-house translator role base on actual work experience, project cases to analyze the job content and the challenges in-house translator faces nowadays. On top of that, base on own experience, this study will explore how in-house translators strategize their work to satisfy different objectives while successfully deliver the message; and to help more people understand the value of the in-house translator.

Abstract:
The Omega publishing house began its activities in 2013, when it started publishing outdated translations of classic literature, especially those that were no longer protected by copyright. This thesis analyses its activities, mostly during the 2013-2018 period: it focuses on the range of published titles and changes in the editorial approach to texts, with emphasis on classic literature. The publishing houses' activities are examined within the field of Czech publishing landscape and compared to the methods recommended in specialised literature, as well as to other publishers's activites. The thesis then presents a translation and textual analysis of three works (R. Kipling's Selected Short Stories, E. Brontë's Wuthering Heights and C. Dickens's Little Dorrit) published by Omega. A hypothesis about the overall strategy of the publishing house is then formulated based on the findings. Abstract:
This MA thesis is concerned with the comparison of two Czech translations of C. S. Lewis' novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The first part concentrates on the description of the author's and translators' life as well as the background of creating the novel and its translations. One part deals with the film adaptations of the book. Then there are described individual techniques and methods of translation and its analysis. The second part analyses the book in general. Names used in the book, titles of chapters, selected passages and special idioms are analyzed in detail. It deals with different approaches of each translator and examines the usage of words, sentence structures and their text style. The thesis tries to compare and analyze all three texts in order to come up with the sufficient justification or disprove of all used items. Key words Novel, translation, translator, author, analysis, comparison, usage of words, sentence structures, text style, methods of translation, justification, disprove.
