This chapter first compares Jesus’s translation and reappearance story with similar tales of Achilles appearing in a transformed body around White Island. Both Achilles and Jesus were translated after their deaths, both had their corpses enlivened and immortalized in another location, both appear in solid form to many witnesses, and both were worshipped by their votaries. A second comparison analyzes Jesus’s tomb tokens with those of Numa, Rome’s second king. The tombs of both Numa and Jesus are sealed, but their bodies disappear. Despite the disappearance, sure signs of their presence are revealed, as in the case of Alcmene (mother of Heracles). This chapter also discusses the trope of alternative reports, used in the stories of both Romulus and the Matthean Jesus.

In this paper, the authors demonstrate that language diversity imposes a significant barrier in message communication like Short Messaging Service (SMS). SMS and other messaging services, including Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and e-mail, are widely used for person-to-person and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) communications due to their reach, simplicity and reliability of delivery. Reach and service delivery can be further enhanced if the message is delivered in the recipient’s preferred language. Using language translation software and a database server, the authors show that the messages can be delivered as per language preference of the recipient irrespective of the language of the original message. They demonstrate the proposed mechanism can deliver a large number of services, such as education, health care management, notification in emergency situations, news and weather reports, to those who are currently not able to access them due to language barrier.

Abstract:

This chapter presents and discusses an international telecollaborative text-writing and translation project conducted during the second semester of a translation course in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The participants were non-native intermediate students of French from universities in Algeria and Moldova. This paper firstly provides theoretical background on telecollaboration and its benefits for learners from different geographical, linguistic, and cultural contexts. Secondly, it analyses the challenges of telecollaborating via asynchronous and exolingual communication (email). To do this, I analyse student perspectives on the efficacy of the approach in the form of reports administered before and after the tellecollaborations. The chapter concludes that telecollaboration between learners from different backgrounds is difficult, but can succeed and remains an opportunity to develop linguistic, cultural and digital skills along with intercultural awareness. In the conclusions I give an overall evaluation of the case study, and suggestions for a future telecollaborative work.

A medical resident was on duty at New York Hospital one night in 1979 when a 27-year-old security guard was admitted with a rare form of pneumonia. As inexperienced as the resident was, he knew that this very rare condition was usually diagnosed only in people with a history of cancer, organ transplantation, or other conditions involving immune system suppression. This otherwise healthy young man had none of those. Weeks later, when the resident presented this case at inner-city rounds, a number of hands shot up. These clinicians had seen similar cases. The resident's report of this New York City outbreak was one of three that formed the basis for the first published report of the disease we would come to know as AIDS. Three years later, this physician, Dr. Henry Masur, arrived at the National Institutes of Health where he joined established NIH researchers already anxiously trying to understand this deadly new condition. At key communications offices on the NIH campus, phones were ringing incessantly. Reporters all around the world wanted to know what NIH was doing about it. As public communicators, we were learning about the disease along with the researchers. Why did it seem to disproportionately affect gay men? Why were people with the disease dying from ordinary infections? We were learning the answers to these questions as they unfolded, translating what we learned into plain English, and getting the information out to the public. A prominent AIDS researcher came into the office of one of my colleagues, sat next to her, and made a simple drawing of how immune cells appeared to be affected by the new virus, explaining it to her at the same time scientists themselves were just beginning to understand it. Dr. Masur is now chief of the Critical Care Medicine Department of the NIH Clinical Center. I covered his account of his first meeting with an AIDS patient for an NIH employee newsletter when he delivered the NIH Astute Clinician Lecture in 2002, which honors scientists who observe and investigate unusual clinical occurrences.

The increasing importance of e-learning has been a boosting element for the emergence of Internet-based educational tools. As we move into the information age, tremendous efforts are made in the development of new information and communication technologies for educational purposes. The ultimate goal is to facilitate elearning methodologies and acquisition. The chapter’s contribution is in the area of open source software for technology-enhanced learning. First, we report on the capabilities of Pliant, a novel software framework for Web-based courseware development. Pliant’ design features upon which e-learning capabilities are built are presented, showing that Pliant has some advantages over existing software, including flexibility, efficiency, and universal usability. A case study of the use of Pliant in the project “Multilanguage Database for Localization” developed at the CUSB School of Translation is presented. Second, we present Academia,3 a Pliant-based courseware development Web portal, and its use in translation studies at CUSB.

This collaborative activist reflection highlights the work and activism of the TransLatin@ Coalition, a nationally recognized organization founded in 2009, which advocates for the dignity and respect of Trans Latin@ lives in the United States. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the organization released a survey report in November 2016, titled “The State of Trans Health: Trans Latin@s and Their Health Care Needs” that takes a holistic approach of understanding how issues such as mental health, medical health, sexual health, housing, employment, and spirituality shape the health and well-being of Trans Latin@s in Southern California. This chapter presents some selected three-dimensional applications of the CDL-BIEM in elasticity and Stokes flows, especially to particulate solids for which the method is devised. Abstract:

In the case of an axially translating tape, supported by a roller, the effects of air entrainment can be reduced by a grooved roller. Use of grooves on the roller surface substantially improves the traction capacity, relative to a non-grooved roller surface [1,2,3,4]. In our previous work, a mechanics model of the tape interacting with a grooved roller was presented [5]. In this work, a comparison of the experimental and modeling studies of the tape-to-grooved-roller spacing is reported.
