A brief explanation of the generic nature of the French chanson and an evaluation of Brel’s stature as a twentieth-century chanson writer are followed by background details and a description of the translation process involved. The factorial validity of an Afrikaans translation of the Comrey Personality Scales, was investigated using a sample of 804 South African university students. Nine factors were extracted and rotated. Eight of the factors were clearly recognisable as the eight factors that comprise Comrey's 1970 taxonomy of personality traits. Abstract:

In 2011, a comprehensive evaluation of accuracy using 51 languages with Google Translate showed that many European languages had good results, but several Asian languages performed poorly. The online service has improved its accuracy over the intervening eight years, and a reevaluation using the same text as the original study shows a 34% improvement based upon BLEU scores. This new study shows that translations between English and German, Afrikaans, Portuguese, Spanish, Danish, Greek, Polish, Hungarian, Finnish, and Chinese tend to be the most accurate.

One of the latest translations of the Bible in Afrikaans is DieBybel@kinders.co.za. The target group of this Bible is kids. Since this is a children’s Bible, the scientific basis of this project is often overlooked. In this article the translational and semantic principles underlying this Bible are discussed. Valuable experience is being shared with other scholars. It is done in order to equip people who want to undertake similar projects in the future. The need for similar projects in the other official languages of South Africa is also emphasized.

A central poem in Van Wyk Louw’s Tristia (1962), is “H. Teresa van Avila flap uit” (literally translated: “Saint Teresa of Avila talks too much/babbles uncontrollably”. Mark 1:4 in the New Afrikaans Bible Mark 1:4 is often used as an example text to illustrate the difference between traditional and newer approaches to Bible translating. The reason is that the verse contains a concatenation of nominalizations of events (i e, baptism, repentance, forgiveness and sins) which is foreign to many modern languages. In this paper the way the New Afrikaans Bible translates these words is analysed and evaluated. It is concluded that the New Afrikaans Bible’s (1983) translation of this verse has been influenced by dogmatic concerns rather than linguistic considerations.
