Abstract:
Abstract Studies in Gothic is a collection of twelve cutting edge chapters on the Goths and their language. The topics it covers are highly varied and include sociolinguistics, history, translation, phonology, derivational morphology, etymology, verbal syntax, word order, linguistic theory, and discourse structure. Individual chapters examine Gothic–Latin bilingualism in sixth-century Italy, some hitherto unsuspected aspects of the production of the first edition of the Codex Argenteus associated with England, and the translations of Greek nominal compounds in the Gospels. This chapter examines the colonial Gothic novel. Pervasive in the literatures of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Caribbean, the colonial Gothic is more appropriately described as a mode rather than a discrete genre, and its representational possibilities have been shaped by three broad phases of generic transformation and cross-fertilization within the Anglophone novel during the period in question. While the popularity of the Gothic novel peaked in the 1790s with the romances of Ann Radcliffe, its translation into British colonial contexts was enabled in the early decades of the ninet

Abstract:
This reference grammar of Gothic includes much history along with a description of Gothic grammar. Apart from runic inscriptions, Gothic is the earliest attested language of the Germanic family in Indo-European. Specifically, it is East Germanic. Most of the extant Gothic corpus is a 4th-century translation of the Bible, traditionally ascribed to Wulfila. This translation is historically important because it antedates Jerome’s Latin Vulgate. Gothic inflectional categories include nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Nouns are inflected for three genders, two numbers, and four cases. Adjectives also h

Abstract:
‘Look, my lord! See heaven itself declares against your impious intentions’ The Castle of Otranto (1764) is the first supernatural English novel and one of the most influential works of Gothic fiction. It inaugurated a literary genre that will be forever associated with the effects that Walpole pioneered. Professing to be a translation of a mysterious Italian tale from the darkest Middle Ages, the novel tells of Manfred, prince of Otranto, whose fear of an ancient prophecy sets him on a course of destruction. After the grotesque death of his only son, Conrad, on his wedding day, Manfred determ
