Abstract:
The editor of the Translatio Vetus, Joanna Judycka, remarks of the anonymous translator that he knew his métier. Indeed, the translation, apart from some minor omissions, is extremely competent. Some of its various features mentioned by Dr. Judycka are, in fact, common to many medieval translations from the Greek into Latin; for example, the confusion of the present and future, the rendering of ἄν with the optative by utique with the future indicative, and the handling of the all-pervasive articular infinitive (so common and important in scientific prose). Nor are the discrepancies in number and degree characteristic of any one author or school. Only a detailed analysis of the translator's Sprachgebrauch, such as L. Minio-Paluello contemplated before his death, can reveal the identity of the translator.

Abstract:
Milan Kundera, a Czech émigré writer, living in Paris and now writing in French, is (in)famous for his tight and obsessive authorial control. He has said many times that he did not trust translators to translate his works accurately and faithfully. The various translations of his novel Žert (The Joke) exemplify this point. The novel has been translated into English, French, and many other languages more than once, depending on Kundera’s dissatisfaction with a particular translation (which, at first, he would support). Thus, there followed a cascade of translations (namely in French and English) as Kundera would eventually become dissatisfied even with the latest “definitive” translated version. As he famously says in an interview regarding the 1968 French translation of Žert, “rage seized me”. From then on, Kundera showed displeasure at any translator who, however briefly, would impersonate the author and take some license in translating Kundera’s work. Further, Kundera decided that only his full authorial involvement in the process would ascertain “the same authenticity” of his translations as the original Czech works. Kundera thus becomes the omnipresent, omnipotent author, himself impersonating God controlling his own creation. Finally, Kundera takes extreme measures and translates Žert into French himself. The resulting translation surprised many – editing changes are plentiful but apparent only to those who can compare the original Czech text with Kundera’s own translation. Kundera’s stance is conflicting, as he denies creativity to other translators but as the auto-translator, Kundera freely rewrites, rather than just retranslates, his own works. By exploring the convoluted and complex history of translations of Kundera’s works, I will try to illuminate the reasons behind Kundera’s posture. I will support my discussion by analyzing not only well known Kundera’s statements, but also those less quoted which, as I have discovered, are rather crucial to understanding Kundera’s position.

Abstract:
F.M. Dostoevsky (1821–1881) never translated Shakespeare’s works into Russian, at least not in the common sense. His fascination, however, with Hamlet and his choices, led him to interrogate the cult of Hamlet in his own culture to better understand the political and philosophical schism of the nineteenth-century Russian intelligentsia, torn between Western and Populist ideals. Translatio, in the broader sense of “carrying over” Hamlet’s character, caught on a threshold, into the Russian context represents an important aspect of Dostoevsky’s re-interpretation of modern ethics. More immediately, this translatio is a call to the “old morality” of the 1840s generation of Russian intellectuals, who rejected notions of rational egoism and of the means justifying the ends. Dostoevsky’s schismatic hero, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment, is Dostoevsky’s reimagining of his own culture’s translation of Hamlet that produced extreme and radical forms of Hamlet. Raskolnikov mimics Hamlet’s conscience-stricken personality at war with itself but achieves a more ambiguous ending typical of Dostoevsky’s regenerative paradigm.

Abstract:
The Romans understood that translation entails transformation. The Roman term “translatio” stood not only literally for a carrying-across (as by boat) of material from one country to another, but also (metaphorically) for both linguistic translation and metaphorical transformation. These shared usages provide a lens on Roman anxieties about their relationship to Greece, from which they both transferred and translated a literature to call their own. Despite the problematic association of the Greeks with pleasure, rhetoric, and poetic language, the Roman elite argued for the possibility of translation and transformation of Greek texts into a distinctly Roman and authoritative mode of expression. Cicero's hope was that eventually translated Latin texts would replace the Greek originals altogether. In the end, however, the Romans seem to have felt that effeminacy had the last laugh.

Abstract:
Cochrane produces independent research to improve healthcare decisions. It translates its research summaries into different languages to enable wider access, relying largely on volunteers. Machine translation (MT) could facilitate efficiency in Cochrane’s low-resource environment. We compared three off-the-shelf machine translation engines (MTEs)—DeepL, Google Translate and Microsoft Translator—for Russian translations of Cochrane plain language summaries (PLSs) by assessing the quantitative human post-editing effort within an established translation workflow and quality assurance process. 30 PLSs each were pre-translated with one of the three MTEs. Ten volunteer translators post-edited nine randomly assigned PLSs each—three per MTE—in their usual translation system, Memsource. Two editors performed a second editing step. Memsource’s Machine Translation Quality Estimation (MTQE) feature provided an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered estimate of how much editing would be required for each PLS, and the analysis feature calculated the amount of human editing after each editing step. Google Translate performed the best with highest average quality estimates for its initial MT output, and the lowest amount of human post-editing. DeepL performed slightly worse, and Microsoft Translator worst. Future developments in MT research and the associated industry may change our results.

Abstract:
The article will focus on our personal experience in Russian translation of the reference book by French semioticians Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jacques Fontanille on the semiotics of passions. In particular, possible translative variations of terms relating to passions such as ‘umbrage’ with no exact analogue in Russian have been discussed with one of the authors, Jacques Fontanille. According to Umberto Eco, for a theory of translation, not only may it be necessary to examine many examples of translation, but also to have had at least one of the following three experiences: in checking translations by others, in translating, and in being translated - or better still, in being translated in collaboration with one’s translator. We will also present Yuri Lotman’s semiosphere, being especially interested in the French translation of concepts such as ‘unpredictability.’ The experience of written scientific translation, on the one hand, and experience in the international cultural sphere, on the other hand, will allow us to put forward some hypotheses about the importance of intersemiotic translation.

After ample discussion in the Italian doctrine and case law, on June 19, 2009, Act n. 69 was passed in Italy and in its article 59 attempted to fill the gap about the connection between administrative and ordinary jurisdictions. The legislator did not adopt the translatio iudicii principle as it had been conceived for the cases in which the lack of jurisdiction is acknowledged, as per art 50 of the Italian Civil Procedure Code. In Brazil, both the translatio iudicii principle and resumption of procedure are part of the civil procedural system, although such terms are not expressly adopted. Procedures are resumed and the files are sent to competent court in cases in which relative and absolute lack of jurisdiction has been declared. In the first case, all former acts remain valid (including intermediate court orders) and in the second intermediate court orders are considered null and void while all other acts remain in effect. However, the existing rules under the Brazilian legislation are insufficient to cover every concrete case. Analyzing our case law, one observes that, often, the chosen path is dismissal without prejudice, instead of adopting the translatio iudicii and procedure resumption, based on unconstitutional grounds that infringe the principles of access to justice and reasonable duration of procedures. On the other hand, there is no thorough study about procedural effects (e.g., perpetuatio iurisdicionis and lis pendens) of the acts performed before the unqualified court. This study aims at analyzing the applicability of translatio iudicii and proceeding resumption under the Brazilian Civil Procedural Law on the evidence of constitutional principles; procedural and material effects of the acts performed before the unqualified court; and to propose solutions other than the ones provided in our case law
Após amplo debate na doutrina e Tribunais italianos, a respeito do princípio da translatio iudicii, em 19 de junho de 2009, foi publicada na Itália a Lei n. 69 que, em seu art. 59, preenche a lacuna sobre a comunicação entre a jurisdição administrativa e a ordinária. No Brasil, o princípio da translatio iudicii e a reassunção do processo fazem parte do sistema processual civil, sem que essas denominações sejam expressamente adotadas. Trata-se da reassunção do processo e remessa dos autos ao juízo competente, nos casos em que é declarada a incompetência relativa e a absoluta. Na primeira hipótese, há o aproveitamento de todos os atos (inclusive decisórios) e, na segunda, os atos de caráter decisório são considerados nulos e os demais são conservados. Ocorre, todavia, que as regras já previstas no ordenamento pátrio não são suficientes para resolver todos os casos concretos. Da análise da jurisprudência pátria, constata-se que, muitas vezes, opta-se por extinguir o processo sem resolução do mérito, ao invés de se adotar a translatio iudicii e a reassunção do processo, sob fundamentos inconstitucionais, que violam os princípios do acesso à justiça e da duração razoável do processo. Por outro lado, não há estudo aprofundado sobre os efeitos processuais (por exemplo, perpertuatio iurisdicionis e litispendência) e materiais (por exemplo, interrupção da decadência e prescrição) dos atos realizados perante o juízo considerado incompetente. Desse modo, o presente ensaio tem como escopo analisar a aplicabilidade da translatio iudicii e a reassunção do processo no direito processual civil brasileiro, à luz dos princípios constitucionais; os efeitos processuais e materiais dos atos realizados perante o juízo considerado incompetente e propor soluções diferentes das atualmente empregadas pela jurisprudência

Je commencerai par la question de savoir s’il est oui ou non souhaitable, nécessaire ou même possible d’élaborer une théorie unifiée d’intermédialité ou de transmédialité. J’aimerais pour l’instant laisser cette question en suspens et rappeler que nous avons assisté à des tentatives remarquables ces dernières années, ou du moins depuis les années 1980. Passer en revue les publications les plus réussies des vingt dernières années nous montre, qu’à cause des interrelations complexes et du chevauchement d’une grande variété et diversité de stratégies médiatiques et de formes de production, la tentative voulant présenter de façon claire les différenciations et les fonctions des relations intermédiales et transmédiales, a conduit dans certains cas à des définitions similaires, certains termes ayant des constituants similaires voire même identiques. Ces tentatives incluent tous types de définitions d’intermédialité et de transmédialité (ou dans une certaine mesure des termes comme "références aux médias" ("Medienbezüge"), "combinaison de médias" ("Medienkombination") et "changement de médias" ("Medienwechsel") (Rajewsky 2002 : 18 sqq.) ou le mélange de termes issus de la critique littéraire, comme l''intertextualité ou la "dialoguicité" avec des termes de la théorie médiatique.

Développée à partir d’un corpus documentaire de plus de 200 représentations iconographiques réparties entre le IXe et le XVe siècle, cette thèse s’appuie aussi sur des sources musicales en latin et des éléments pris dans la littérature profane médiévale en langues vernaculaires. Ce travail de recherche est réuni et organisé dans une base de données qui s’articule à la thèse tout au long de l’argumentation. La description de ce corpus et de la création de cet outil forme la première partie de cette thèse. Une deuxième partie, consacrée à l’étude organologique physique des instruments, vise à proposer un discours objectif sur la nature de l’instrument et de ses éléments constitutifs : formes, cordes, chevilles, chevalets, modes de jeux, tenues etc. Cette partie se termine par un exercice de reconstitution organologique. Une troisième partie étudie l’image sociale et symbolique des instruments en essayant d’englober l’ensemble des discours associés aux cithares planche autour de la notion de translatio propre à la littérature médiévale, que l’on nommera alors translatio musicae. L’ensemble du travail réalisé permettra de former en conclusion une proposition de classification instrumentale propre aux cithares planche médiévales, qui pourra être éventuellement adaptée à l’étude d’autres instruments de musique
Developed from a corpus of over 200 iconographical sources divided between the 9th and the 15th century, this thesis also draws on Latin sources in and musical elements taken from the medieval secular literature written in vernacular languages. This research is compiled and organized inside a database articulated to the thesis throughout the argument. The description of this documentary corpus and the creation of this specific tool are given in the first part of this dissertation. A second part, devoted to the study of physical characteristics of these instruments, aims to provide an objective discourse on the nature of the instrument and its components: forms, strings, pins, holding manners, playing modes, etc. This part ends with an instrumental reconstitution exercise. A third part examines the social image and symbolic image of the instruments trying to encompass all speech – both literary and visual – related to the board zithers around the medieval notion of translatio, which will be in this particular case called translatio musicae. This work will conclude with a proposition of a specific organological classification for medieval board zithers, which might possibly be adapted to the study of other musical instruments

Cette étude explore les implications épistémologiques — linguistiques, poétiques, esthétiques, rhétoriques, génériques, formelles - existant entre les fictions littéraires thématisant la traduction et les formes fonctionnelles de l’argumentation traductologique. Notre travail se développe autour de ce que nous avons défini « récit de traduction », et se concentre sur deux romans relevant du champ de production littéraire francophone du vingtième siècle – Amour bilingue d’Abdelkebir Khatibi (roman, Maroc) et Le Désert mauve de Nicole Brossard (roman, Québec) – , ainsi que sur les fictions littéraires de Jorge Luis Borges (récit, Argentine). Les modalités et les conditions de coexistence d’une intention cognitive et d’une finalité esthétique ne manquent pas d’éveiller un double questionnement sur le statut de la représentation dans son rapport avec la langue ainsi que sur l’évolution et le brouillage des genres littéraires
This study investigates the epistemological, linguistic, poetical, aesthetical, rhetorical, generic and formal implications existing between fictional works exploring the theme of translation and functional forms of argumentation in contemporary translation theories. Our work focuses on the new notion defined as “récit de traduction”. It deals with two twentieth-century novels within the field of fiction written in French, Abdelkebir Khatibi’s Amour Bilingue (Morocco) and Nicole Brossard’s Le Désert mauve (Quebec), but also with Jorge Luis Borges’s short stories (Argentina). Both the modalities and conditions of cognitive intentions and aesthetical purposes in narrative fiction contribute to underline a double questioning on the status of representation as envisaged in its relationship with language as well as with the evolution and mixture of literary genres

Abstract:
Translated children’s works from English to Chinese have flooded China unprecedentedly since the end of the 19PthP century. However, there is a discrepancy in the translation of Chinese children’s works into the English language. This is maybe because western scholars are still largely ignoring Asian texts for young readers. Therefore, the research aims to fill the gap in the scholarship by studying the translated Bronze and Sunflower, which is a renowned work written by the Chinese first Hans Christian Anderson winner Cao Wenxuan, from the aspect of narrative space. A qualitative approach is adopted to compare the similarities and differences of narrative space between the source text and the target text. The samples will be taken from Cao Wenxuan’s Bronze and Sunflower and its English translation. The textual analysis is illuminated through the narratological framework, which is based on three-layered space: The topographic level, the chronotopic level and the textual level. The study explores how narrative space is constructed in the process of translating Bronze and Sunflower. It is hoped that the findings of the study will show how space is created in a different languagea, and that the translator prefers to change the narrative space rather than keeping the same spatial structure in the target text.

The motion of a cylindrical nanowire is transiently modeled for two different boundary cases to determine whether or not steady motion is observed. The first case is a nanowire located concentrically at the center of a relatively narrow channel and angled at 45° with respect to the horizontal. The second case is a nanowire located eccentrically in a large channel and aligned with the horizontal. In both cases, the main particle motion is horizontal translation through the channel. In the concentric case, the nanowire translates horizontally while translating vertically and rotating in an oscillatory manner. The eccentric particle translates vertically upward and rotates away from the wall throughout it horizontal translation.

Abstract:
State-of-the-art machine translation models are still not on a par with human translators. Previous work takes human interactions into the neural machine translation process to obtain improved results in target languages. However, not all model--translation errors are equal -- some are critical while others are minor. In the meanwhile, same translation mistakes occur repeatedly in similar context. To solve both issues, we propose CAMIT, a novel method for translating in an interactive environment. Our proposed method works with critical revision instructions, therefore allows human to correct arbitrary words in model-translated sentences. In addition, CAMIT learns from and softly memorizes revision actions based on the context, alleviating the issue of repeating mistakes. Experiments in both ideal and real interactive translation settings demonstrate that our proposed CAMIT enhances machine translation results significantly while requires fewer revision instructions from human compared to previous methods.

Abstract:
Taking advantage of computationally lightweight, but high-quality translators prompt consideration of new applications that address neglected languages. For projects with protected or personal data, translators for less popular or low-resource languages require specific compliance checks before posting to a public translation API. In these cases, locally run translators can render reasonable, cost-effective solutions if done with an army of offline, smallscale pair translators. Like handling a specialist’s dialect, this research illustrates translating two historically interesting, but obfuscated languages: 1) hacker-speak (“l33t”) and 2) reverse (or “mirror”) writing as practiced by Leonardo da Vinci. The work generalizes a deep learning architecture to translatable variants of hacker-speak with lite, medium, and hard vocabularies. The original contribution highlights a fluent translator of hacker-speak in under 50 megabytes and demonstrates a companion text generator for augmenting future datasets with greater than a million bilingual sentence pairs. A primary motivation stems from the need to understand and archive the evolution of the international computer community, one that continuously enhances their talent for speaking openly but in hidden contexts. This training of bilingual sentences supports deep learning models using a long short-term memory, recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN). It extends previous work demonstrating an English-to-foreign translation service built from as little as 10,000 bilingual sentence pairs. This work further solves the equivalent translation problem in twenty-six additional (non-obfuscated) languages and rank orders those models and their proficiency quantitatively with Italian as the most successful and Mandarin Chinese as the most challenging. For neglected languages, the method prototypes novel services for smaller niche translations such as Kabyle (Algerian dialect) which covers between 5-7 million speakers but one which for most enterprise translators, has not yet reached development. One anticipates the extension of this approach to other important dialects, such as translating technical (medical or legal) jargon and processing health records or handling many of the dialects collected from specialized domains (mixed languages like “Spanglish”, acronym-laden Twitter feeds, or urban slang).

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) has drawn much attention due to its promising translation performance recently. However, several studies indicate that NMT often generates fluent but unfaithful translations. In this paper, we propose a method to alleviate this problem by using a phrase table as recommendation memory. The main idea is to add bonus to words worthy of recommendation, so that NMT can make correct predictions. Specifically, we first derive a prefix tree to accommodate all the candidate target phrases by searching the phrase translation table according to the source sentence.Then, we construct a recommendation word set by matching between candidate target phrases and previously translated target words by NMT. After that, we determine the specific bonus value for each recommendable word by using the attention vector and phrase translation probability. Finally,we integrate this bonus value into NMT to improve the translation results. The extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods obtain remarkable improvements over the strong attention based NMT.

Abstract:
The sign language translation (SLT) which aims at translating a sign language video into natural language is a weakly supervised task, given that there is no exact mapping relationship between visual actions and textual words in a sentence label. To align the sign language actions and translate them into the respective words automatically, this paper proposes a dense temporal convolution network, termed DenseTCN which captures the actions in hierarchical views. Within this network, a temporal convolution (TC) is designed to learn the short-term correlation among adjacent features and further extended to a dense hierarchical structure. In the kth TC layer, we integrate the outputs of all preceding layers together: (1) The TC in a deeper layer essentially has larger receptive fields, which captures long-term temporal context by the hierarchical content transition. (2) The integration addresses the SLT problem by different views, including embedded short-term and extended longterm sequential learning. Finally, we adopt the CTC loss and a fusion strategy to learn the featurewise classification and generate the translated sentence. The experimental results on two popular sign language benchmarks, i.e. PHOENIX and USTCConSents, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in terms of various measurements.
