Abstract:
Renegade physician Paracelsus compared St. John’s Day dances to earthquakes, epileptic tremors, and tics. This ecosophical and vitalist concept, according to which all sorts of bodies echo one another’s shaking motions, countered long-held academic prejudice against witchcraft; neither choreomaniacs nor witches were subject to supernatural forces. Rather, the ‘vital spirits’ caused limbs, like branches, to shake. What’s more, dancing was now thought to cure dancing, and municipal authorities keen to keep a Strasbourg dancing mania in check employed guards to help wear dancers out—while exorcism associated religious, municipal, and medical experts. The translatio or passage from collective to individual disorder, epitomized in St. Vitus, now patron saint of all dance maniacs, continued throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as neurologists’ theories of chorea, epilepsy and insanity aligned popular carousing with individual quaking motions. Choreomania came to signal the epidemic proliferation of what Giorgio Agamben has styled purposeless gesture.

Abstract:
Transnational exchange and intellectual networks in the early modern period relied upon translation—mainly into Latin—as a way to communicate across Europe. Translation was integral to humanist education where creative engagement with the source text was admired. Yet the exegetical and socio-political considerations that underpinned biblical translation meant that the rights and wrongs of translating the Bible into the vernacular in England was hotly debated. Whereas scriptural translation drew attention to the need to translate word for word to prevent heresy and to maintain accuracy in the presentation of the Word, psalm translation and translating from other vernacular languages posed different challenges for the translator; these challenges perhaps become most apparent when translating across confessional divides. This chapter considers the relationship between translation and religion in early modern English literature and the wider European perspectives that informed the ways in which narrative was recreated in English imaginative writing.

Abstract:
This chapter’s discussion of translations of Book 4 of the Aeneid spans sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English renditions of Virgil, when England and the English language were becoming prominent on the European and global scene. There is a consistent self-consciousness in this effort of using Virgil as a vehicle for translatio imperii, but also in the search for an English metre and idiom which could adequately convey the epic gravity of the ancient epic poetry. Braden shows that while most of the translations of this era usually serve as the background to the most prominent of them, that of Dryden, they nonetheless are important for understanding how translation practices developed at that time. Book 4, in which the hero’s imperial mission is most seriously threatened, provides a focus of discussion of some key passages that illuminate the literary tendencies of that time.

This chapter highlights one particular moment in translation theory that reveals Dante’s influence on the role of translation as reception in vernacular literatures. Armstrong focuses on the not widely known work of Enrique de Villena (1384–1434), whose translation can be seen as a transitional point between medieval and modern translational practices and as marking the beginning of a ‘vernacularization’ of translation, a process designed to make the translated text more accessible to the target audience. In analysing the Castilian Eneida of Villena, Armstrong reflects on the philological conscience of a translator faced with the daunting task of translating Virgil, as well as on the boundaries that separate text from paratext.

Abstract:
This chapter walks us backwards on the path of French prose translations of Virgil, from Paul Veyne to Jacques Perret. While Clément-Tarantino emphasizes that Veyne’s fluid and vivacious translation rekindled the interest of the French-reading public in Virgil, she also analyses the principles behind Perret’s translation of the Aeneid in the context of his book Latin et culture. In this work, which elaborates on the ?art of translation?, Perret considered attention to the philological and prosodic intricacies of the source text to be the main goal for the ‘ideal translator’; yet he decided to translate the Aeneid in prose. Perret’s translation of the Aeneid for Les Belles Lettres serves the goal of facilitating the reading of Virgil in Latin; by contrast, Veyne distanced himself from philological scrutiny, offering instead the renewed pleasure of reading Virgil in French.
