After ample discussion in the Italian doctrine and case law, on June 19, 2009, Act n. 69 was passed in Italy and in its article 59 attempted to fill the gap about the connection between administrative and ordinary jurisdictions. The legislator did not adopt the translatio iudicii principle as it had been conceived for the cases in which the lack of jurisdiction is acknowledged, as per art 50 of the Italian Civil Procedure Code. In Brazil, both the translatio iudicii principle and resumption of procedure are part of the civil procedural system, although such terms are not expressly adopted. Procedures are resumed and the files are sent to competent court in cases in which relative and absolute lack of jurisdiction has been declared. In the first case, all former acts remain valid (including intermediate court orders) and in the second intermediate court orders are considered null and void while all other acts remain in effect. However, the existing rules under the Brazilian legislation are insufficient to cover every concrete case. Analyzing our case law, one observes that, often, the chosen path is dismissal without prejudice, instead of adopting the translatio iudicii and procedure resumption, based on unconstitutional grounds that infringe the principles of access to justice and reasonable duration of procedures. On the other hand, there is no thorough study about procedural effects (e.g., perpetuatio iurisdicionis and lis pendens) of the acts performed before the unqualified court. This study aims at analyzing the applicability of translatio iudicii and proceeding resumption under the Brazilian Civil Procedural Law on the evidence of constitutional principles; procedural and material effects of the acts performed before the unqualified court; and to propose solutions other than the ones provided in our case law

Abstract:

Abstract:
Developed from a corpus of over 200 iconographical sources divided between the 9th and the 15th century, this thesis also draws on Latin sources in and musical elements taken from the medieval secular literature written in vernacular languages. This research is compiled and organized inside a database articulated to the thesis throughout the argument. The description of this documentary corpus and the creation of this specific tool are given in the first part of this dissertation. A second part, devoted to the study of physical characteristics of these instruments, aims to provide an objective discourse on the nature of the instrument and its components: forms, strings, pins, holding manners, playing modes, etc. This part ends with an instrumental reconstitution exercise. A third part examines the social image and symbolic image of the instruments trying to encompass all speech – both literary and visual – related to the board zithers around the medieval notion of translatio, which will be in this particular case called translatio musicae. This work will conclude with a proposition of a specific organological classification for medieval board zithers, which might possibly be adapted to the study of other musical instruments

This study investigates the epistemological, linguistic, poetical, aesthetical, rhetorical, generic and formal implications existing between fictional works exploring the theme of translation and functional forms of argumentation in contemporary translation theories. Our work focuses on the new notion defined as “récit de traduction”. It deals with two twentieth-century novels within the field of fiction written in French, Abdelkebir Khatibi’s Amour Bilingue (Morocco) and Nicole Brossard’s Le Désert mauve (Quebec), but also with Jorge Luis Borges’s short stories (Argentina). Both the modalities and conditions of cognitive intentions and aesthetical purposes in narrative fiction contribute to underline a double questioning on the status of representation as envisaged in its relationship with language as well as with the evolution and mixture of literary genres

Leblanc, Hélène. "Translatio signorum : penser les signes à l’Age classique à partir de la division signum formale/ signum instrumentale." Thesis, Lille 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LIL30048/document.

Full text
Abstract:
All along its history, semiotic has oscillated between a large and a narrow definition of its object. The 17th century is, in this regard, a pivotal period, with a trend towards a narrower construal of the term ‘sign’, which, for most authors of that time, does not apply anymore to concepts and ideas. This move however is not an homogeneous one. The first half of the century witnesses, among late scholasticism, to an important debate about the definition of ‘sign’, stirred by the introduction, among traditional taxonomies, of the division between ‘signum formale’ and ‘signum instrumentale’. The former echoed the medieval inclusion of concepts under the category of ‘signs’. The latter matches the definition of Augustine, according to which the sign is exclusively sensible and strictly different from the thing signified. The reconstruction of the terms of this late scholastic debate, which originates in Sebastião do Couto’s commentary on Peri Hermeneias, shows that the 17th century authors have tended to return to a strictly instrumental conception of signs, but one from which the traditionnal Augustinian reference is absent. In contrast with the rather common interpretation according to which the definition of signs to be found in the Port-Royal’s Logic offered the new paradigm for representation, this works argues that the semiotic thought of this period is better defined as a translatio, especially visible among Bayle, Gassendi and Hobbes, from a linguistico-pschychological model to a natural semiotics, emblematic of a new logic that has been submitted to physical science

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Most Afrikaans novels that are translated into French are piggyback or relay translations, which means translations of translations. Although piggyback translations have been done since the earliest times and are still being done, they are at best seen as a necessary evil and little research is done on this phenomenon – in fact so little that there is not even a uniform term among scholars to refer to this practice. Translation is the ideal space for different cultures to meet and interact, especially when the translation strategy is to foreignise by retaining cultural elements form the source culture in the translated text. Each translation is however adapted to a certain extent to its own target culture in order for the target public to have a better understanding of the text. When a translator works directly with the source text, he is in control about the way in which cultural references will be conveyed and explained to the target public. In the case of a piggyback translation the translator has to translate a “source text” that has already been adapted, or not, for a specific target public. The piggyback translator has to deal with a text where some cultural references might have been retained and others not. If the piggyback translator has no first-hand knowledge of the source culture, it means that he will not be able to distinguish which references have been adapted, nor to what extent they have been adapted. This study is an investigation into the French translations of two novels by Etienne van Heerden, namely Toorberg and Die swye van Mario Salviati. Le Domaine de Toorberg is a piggyback translation of Toorberg and Un long silence has been translated directly from the Afrikaans source text. The aim is to determine in which of the two French translations cultural transfer was the most successful. In translation studies great emphasis is placed on the fact that translators should not only be bilingual, but also bicultural, which means that the translator should understand both source and target cultures. In the case of the direct translation investigated here, the translator is not only bilingual, but he shows a South African and French biculturality. In the case of the piggyback translation however, the translator’s cultures are French and North American. This means that the piggyback translator has no first-hand knowledge of the source culture with the result that the cultural references are unknown to her. I hope to determine through this study whether piggyback translations are a viable method to present Afrikaans novels to (in this case) French readers and if not, whether alternative methods should be investigated, for example using translators who do not necessarily translate into their first language, as often suggested in translation studies.

"*Translation and the Bouchard-Taylor Commission: Translating Images, Translating Cultures, Translating Québec." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24078.

Full text
Abstract:
In December 2010, the National Post published an article discussing the rather costly enterprise of state-sanctioned official bilingualism in Canada. According to statistics provided by the Fraser Institute (2006), translation and interpretation represented 15% of the total federal government budget spending allocated to bilingualism, a cost that many Canadian commentators deemed “unnecessary.” Shifting demographics and diverse immigration flows (Census data, 2011) are also having a significant impact on Canada’s linguistic landscape, forcing policy-makers to consider whether the Official Languages Act (and thus translation) would benefit from innovative reform. Using this contextual backdrop as its main impetus, this dissertation argues that translation, as defined and practiced in Canada, needs to be broadened for a number of reasons, including accounting for technological advancements, for the increasingly web-based dissemination of translated materials, and for the reality of evolving markets. Tymoczko (2008) has championed *translation as an open-cluster concept, a theoretical perspective that has found resonance in this project, given that the notion is the central premise upon which three additional conceptualizations (i.e. *translation sub-types) are founded. The first sub-type, intersemiotic translation, is explained at length and constitutes the focal point of the project. Instead of using a Peircean approach, the dissertation develops a model based on visual social semiotics in order to facilitate the application of intersemiotic translation in not only professional settings but research contexts as well. The second sub-type, cultural translation, builds on insights from the 1980s and 90s cultural turn, with a specific focus on the relationship between the representation of Canadian micro-cultures and intersemiotic translation. In other words, the effects of these translation processes will also be analyzed. Finally, civic translation is proposed as a third *translation sub-type, which offers a potential framework for multicultural management in democratic countries facing the challenges of globalization. A case study using content from the 2006-2008 debate surrounding reasonable accommodation—with specific attention given to the activities of the Consultation Commission on Accommodation Practices Related to Cultural Differences (also known as the Bouchard-Taylor Commission)—is woven through each chapter, illustrating all three sub-types of *translation. The case study provides compelling examples of why translation practices in Canada should move beyond verbal and state-sanctioned definitions. The novelty and contribution of this research project are manifold: it transcends traditional verbocentric approaches in TS; it responds to other scholars’ claims that there is a lack of case studies that involve text-image relationships and/or explore the role of translation in the news media in a Canadian context; it explores multimodality and its significance for TS in an era of increased Web presence; it showcases a Canadian case study; and, finally, it explores cultural representation through a translation-based framework.

Kirk, R. "Translation and dramaturgy : translating 'Casina' for performance." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.557655.

Full text
Abstract:
Theatre translation theory has for some time been destabilised, particularly in relation to the role of the theatre translator, by the undefined notion of 'performability', a concept which suggests that the linguistic choices of the translator can render the script inherently performable or unperformable in the semiotic system of performance. Nevertheless, practitioners, in the current 'dramaturgical turn', are now demonstrating a heightened dramaturgical consciousness, documenting their practice as research in some cases, and what they perceive to be their dramaturgical choices and restitution in the translation process. However, developments in hermeneutics and semiotics have refocused criticism from a text- centred to a reader-centred analysis, meaning that the intentions of the translator, as new author, are no less subject to re-interpretation. Therefore, until we can unequivocally state that these dramaturgical choices are realised in the mise en scene by the other authors of performance - director, actors and technicians - theory, and notions of the role of the theatre translator, will remain at an impasse. This practice-based research seeks to engage with this impasse by exploring my own dramaturgical consciousness from a documentation of my interpretation of Plautus' Casina, to the linguistic decisions employed to encode this interpretation, and, finally, to the production process itself where these choices are tested and developed through various rehearsals, a rehearsed-reading, and audience and practitioner feedback. By tracing these developments to determine where the script influences the creation of signs in the final mise en scene, and the relationship between the verbal and non-verbal, this thesis argues that translating for performance requires a performative and dramaturgical, rather than a simply textual or historical, re-working of the source text - thus meaning a script can be made performable - and offers a model of translation, extending existing models, to encompass the specific requirements of writing for theatre.

Chan, Andy Lung Jan. "Information economics, the translation profession and translator certification." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/8772.

Full text
Abstract:
This research uses the framework of information economics to analyze the translation profession and translator certification. The translation market is found to be heterogeneous and fragmented and both buyers and sellers
frequently enter and exit the market. The recruiters seeking translators surveyed believe translator certification can enhance the overall image of the translation profession but increased monetary benefits might be minimal.
There are two reasons why currently translator certification systems do not function effectively as a signal. First, because of
"counter-signaling", high-quality translators may have less incentive to use certification because signaling behavior may mark them down as mediocre translators. Second, due to "signal-jamming", vocational master's degrees in Translation are likely to compete with translator certification as a signaling device, and employers find it difficult to make inference about job applicants' employability from these two credentials. As recommendations, professional translator associations, translator
training institutions and others need to collaborate in developing multilateral signaling devices as well as provide translators with the
required knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for them to thrive in the
ever-changing translation market.

Abstract:
First staged in 1980 in Derry, Northern Ireland, by the Field Day Theater Co., Translations is considered a milestone in the history of Irish theater, bringing up various interpretations and analysis, from post-colonial to language studies. The present research aims at studying language as a tool in the crafting of a national art in Ireland, especially in the foundation of a theater and in the creation of a literary tradition, presenting Translations as a metaphor for this process. This study presents a possibility for the translation of the play and is divided in three main parts: 1) a presentation of the play and the discussions surrounding the time of its creation as well as the reception of critics and scholars; 2) a brief presentation of the history of the Irish national theater starting by the foundation of the Irish Literary Theater in 1897 by W.B. Yeats, and a comparison with the foundation of the Field Day Theater Company where their first production, Translations, stands in the tradition started in late 19th century. Besides that, the second part also presents some periods in Irish literature and the relation between writers and the language of production: English or Irish, comparing this relationship to the one found amongst characters in the play; 3) analysis of the translations the play has received to Irish, Greek, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese as well as reflections on the process of translating the play. The following study uses theories in Irish studies such as the ones by Declan Kiberd, theater scholars such as Christopher Murray and Scott Boltwood and texts published by Field Day. Newspapers columns and articles were also researched for this study, especially when concerning the language of literary production in Ireland. The main objetive of this study is to present a reading of the play that does not refer to the death of a language, but to the rebirth of a new Irish language incorporated in the English language, a third language used in the creation of Irish art.

Abstract:
In its function as a mediating body between the political decision-makers and the population, the media have the potential to influence the public opinion and subsequently, policy making. Representations of political discourses are opinion-shaping instruments and often not mere reflections of a given reality; they incorporate implicit and explicit, conscious and unconscious evaluations. In cross-cultural contexts where information travels across languages the media are highly dependent on translation. Despite its central role, media translation as part of the political process has only recently gained visibility in Translation Studies (TS) and remains widely neglected outside the discipline. Current research in TS often prioritises either the textual analysis or, more recently, the identification of the shaping factors in the news production process, and often fails to address diachronic aspects. This thesis investigates the translations of Goebbels’ speeches as published in the French and British press during the interwar period. It combines a synchronic and diachronic textual analysis, inspired by CDA with an in-depth study of context which draws on socio-historical research and the analysis of archival material. Thereby, the thesis is able to link the textual makeup to a wide variety of socio-political and historical variables via the concepts of ‘framing’ and ‘agenda-setting’. In doing so the thesis demonstrates on the one hand, how translation can function as a means of discourse mediation and, on the other hand, it provides evidence that ideology and political expediency alone cannot explain all textual changes introduced by the translator-journalists. Moreover, describing the development of the media images not only allows to add a translational perspective to the reception of the Third Reich but also contributes to a better understanding of the varying influence of contextual factors. The results of the diachronic analysis show that throughout the interwar period the British media published very little about Goebbels and, up until late in 1938, reports focused on the peaceful intentions he expressed. In contrast, Goebbels was frequently reported on in France and the regime was early on represented as an aggressor. Whilst trends in the quantity mirror the differing economic conditions of the newspaper markets, the quality, i.e. the actual realisation, of the media images seems to be a reflection of the differing socio-political positions of France and the United Kingdom after WW1. The development of the images clearly illustrates that the political ideology of appeasement was finally overridden in the UK in 1938 when political expediency forced the government to take a different course of action. However, the study of the editorial correspondence of the Manchester Guardian brings to light that the mosaic of factors influencing the news production process is more complex. The intervention of the involved governments, personal convictions of the foreign correspondents and the editors, spatial and temporal restrictions, issues of credibility, etc. all impacted on the particular make-up of the media texts. The synchronic textual analysis, on the other hand, reveals that the range of framing devices through which the media images were established was largely determined by text type conventions. The strategies applied range from selective-appropriation of text, repositioning of actors and labelling, to audience representation. The analysis clearly demonstrates that intersemiotic translation, i.e. the representation of the speech context, is equally important as inter- and intra-lingual instances of translation.

Abstract:
This study explores the cultural dimension of translating children's and adolescent literature. Framed within the theories of cultural studies, translation studies, Baktinian dialogism, and reader response theories, this study is three-fold: (1) a content analysis is conducted to identify the cultural and linguistic shifts in the translated books and the strategies utilized by the translators for making those shifts, (2) the responses of the source-text (ST) and the target-text (TT) readers are compared; (3) the potential relationship between the translation strategies and the reader responses are inferred based on the findings from (1) and (2). The expected findings are: (1) adept use of various translation strategies helps the TT readers recognize themes as similar as the ST readers; (2) some interventions may create deviating responses in the TT readers as compared with the ST readers; (3) some unique responses by either the ST or the TT readers may be as a direct result of cultural differences more than the translation strategies. The implication section provides recommendations to publishers, translators, educators, parents, teacher educators, and researchers, and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
The television subtitling market suffers from a shortage of professionals, as has been attested by twelve years of personal experience in the industry. The purpose of this research was to investigate the reasons behind this shortage and suggest the basis for implementing a course program on subtitling for TV from a descriptive and polysystemic perspective on translation and a poststructuralist view on education. The proposal presented was based on a list of competencies and abilities every subtitle translator must develop, elaborated from interviews with important actors in the translation for subtitles polysystem, and on the analysis of the norms, constraints and control mechanisms with which the subtitler must deal in his or her professional capacity. The considerations brought forth contemplate methodological and content issues and tackle the peculiarities of subtitling, aiming to offer an alternative to the emphasis on training rather than on education which is usually associated with most courses currently available. Thus, this dissertation intends to guarantee a greater interchange between university and industry, which should bring about benefits for both.

Wallis, Julian. "Interactive translation vs pre-translation in the context of translation memory systems: Investigating the effects of translation method on productivity, quality and translator satisfaction." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27425.

Full text
Abstract:
Translation Memory (TM) systems are currently among the most popular translation tools available on the market. Clients today are looking for productivity and quality, but at the same time are looking to reduce costs. A TM stores portions of previously translated texts in a database so that they can be reused in new texts. There are two ways of working with a TM: interactive mode and pre-translation mode. In interactive mode, the TM system offers proposals to the translator, who can choose to accept and adapt them, or refuse them and translate from scratch. In pre-translation mode, the TM system's proposals are automatically inserted into the new source text, producing a hybrid text containing a mixture of source and target language elements. The translator's job is then to verify the translation of the automatically replaced portions of text, as well as to translate any text that was left in the source language. As the demand for translation continues to rise, more and more translators are looking to TMs to help increase productivity; however, for a variety of reasons, such as cost and incompatible file formats, they do not always have access to a useful TM. Therefore, translators need access to the TM database of the client they are working for in order to complete their translations. However, clients are increasingly hesitant to give out their databases due to proprietary issues. For this reason, many clients are turning to the pre-translation option so that they can get their translations done without having to give out their TM databases. To date, however, no one has yet studied whether the choice of pre-translation vs. interactive translation has an effect on productivity, quality and translator satisfaction. This thesis aims to go some way towards filling this gap by designing and testing a methodology to compare these two methods of working with a TM system. The thesis is divided into three main parts. Part I provides background information on TMs through a literature survey, the findings of which form the basis for three hypotheses concerning the ways in which interactive and pre-translation will impact translation productivity and quality, as well as translator satisfaction. Part II describes an experiment that was designed and conducted to investigate these hypotheses. Finally, Part III evaluates the research carried out in this thesis and suggests possible ways to expand it in the future.

Hui, Maggie Ting Ting. "Risk management by trainee translators: a study of translation procedures and justifications in peer-group interaction." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/83497.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the way student groups translate when simulating interactions between translators and clients, using risk management concepts as tools for describing their decisions. The research aims are: 1) to explore how the use of peer-group interaction in a simulated setting affects students’ ways of managing risk while translating, and 2) to study whether translators have any identifiable pattern of behavior of risk management and effort distribution. A two-cycle experiment involving two roles, the translator and the simulated client, was carried out with a class of translation students to test the effects of the main variable of peer-group interaction. Performance data were collected with screen recordings and think-aloud protocols. Additional data are collected through pre-and-post-experiment questionnaires and interviews with student subjects. The research analyzes of the translators’ rendition processes, codes the problems they face, observe the translation procedures they consider and finally adopt, and looks into the justifications for their procedures, in order to interpret their risk management.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Authorship is a key indicator of individual scholarly distinction. Academic translators, however, are not academic authors and their status as co-producers of new knowledge is denied by the prevalent institutional assumption that they do no more than reproduce existing scholarship. My aim in this thesis is to challenge that preconception by showing how translators work interactively with others to produce texts which contribute independently to scholarship as hybrid discourses of knowledge, and by demonstrating that translation practice expands our knowledge of translation itself. As the basis for these claims, I use my translation of a French monograph on landscape history by Michel Baridon (1926-2009), published in 2006 by Actes Sud. Within a framework combining Bourdieusian approaches and Latour’s actor-network-theory, I analyse my participation in the ‘making’ of that translation within a global production network. All academic texts are produced and validated collaboratively in the academic communities to which they contribute. I argue that new technologies create a bilingual ‘laboratory’ in which authorial, translatorial and editorial roles and responsibilities can be holistically combined to increase the transformative potential of translation projects and expand the social limits of the translator-function. My construction of scholarly comparability between source and target texts during the translation process illustrates the translator’s role as a co-producer of new knowledge and evidences the interpretative power of translated texts in the production of new historical narratives. My contribution to Translation Studies is twofold: I show how interactive networks of translation production can optimise the epistemological and discursive hybridity of translated academic texts, and I demonstrate that translation practice can make a distinctive, independent contribution to scholarship. On that basis, I argue that practitioner-researchers should be mainstreamed within research communities as co-producers of knowledge and translations acknowledged as a research output.

Professional translators employ different kinds of electronic tools in order to achieve increased levels of productivity and quality. The two most prominent of such tools are translation memories and, more recently, machine translation. This thesis investigates how the functioning of translation tools and specific aspects of their graphical user interfaces affect translators’ performance. The study was carried out through an experiment with ten professional translators working from English into Spanish in the domain of software localisation. It was found that translation metadata – a set of meta-information elements provided by the tools about the translation suggestions – affect performance indicators such as speed, quality and typing effort. It was also found that translators spend more time thinking about how to translate a segment than actually typing or making edits to the suggested translations. The results of this study can help identify more efficient workflows, with benefits in terms of costs and quality for translators and their clients. The findings can also help understand the cognitive processes behind the translating activity and contribute to the development of tools that are more efficient and ergonomic, with a view to increasing job satisfaction.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A suitable South African literary text is translated from English to Afrikaans to investigate the possibility of enriching the target culture, although literary translations from English have a limited readership in Afrikaans. The choice of Portrait with Keys by Ivan Vladislavić as source text is motivated in a discussion of its relevance to the target culture, and of its intrinsic literary merit. Enrichment of the target culture is defined within the context of the hermeneutic approach in translation studies. The interpretation of the source text and the role of the translator is emphasised, as seen in Steiner’s account of the hermeneutic motion and Venuti’s views on the visibility of the translator and cultural filtering. Lewis’s concept of abusive fidelity is considered, and ultimately Bandia’s proposed aim of achieving balance, or a middle course between foreignising and domesticating offers an attainable strategy. The annotation of the practical translation of a selection of texts from Portrait with Keys shows that a strategy of foreignisation, of rendering the characteristics of the source texts as closely as possible in the target text, is continually balanced by the translator with a strategy of domestication, in other words creating an idiomatic, accessible target text.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Traditionally educational interpreting refers to educational interpreting for deaf students using Sign Language. Research that has been done in South Africa in spoken language educational interpreting represents pioneering work in this emerging discipline. One of the most important issues that interests policy makers and educators is the effectiveness of educational interpreting for teaching and learning purposes. This study investigates this issue with reference to contemporary ideas from academic literacy studies. Concepts such as affect, identity, accessibility and participation are investigated in order to describe possible relationships between educational interpreting and teaching and learning. The research is done against a discussion of pertinent concepts in interpreting theory, namely role, quality and professionalism. During a four week period educational interpreting was tested by way of a trial in two modules in the Law Faculty of the Stellenbosch University and with reference to three basic questions, namely: • Do students understand subject content better as a result of educational interpreting? • Do students identify better with the classroom situation because of educational interpreting? • Does educational interpreting help students to save time in the learning process? Data were gathered by way of action research and questionnaires, a focus group discussion, interviews and field observation. The research methodology included both qualitative and quantitative components. The results of the study lead to certain conclusions about the experience of educational interpreting in classrooms in the research context and whether educational interpreting can enhance teaching and learning in this context. Recommendations are made regarding the implementation of educational interpreting and further research in the field of Interpreting Studies.

Abstract:

In contemporary Europe, state languages come in contact with a tapestry of immigrant languages and a set of ever more legitimized regional or minority languages. In this context, policymakers are faced with changing demographics and attitudes about rights and integration. Current research on language policies as they pertain to integration largely overlooks the role of translation. This thesis hopes to shed light on this oft-overlooked area. To do so, the thesis focuses on translation policy understood to be that which is the result of translation management, practice, and belief. Translation policy is not explored as an end unto itself, but rather, it is highlighted to stress that policy decisions regarding integration and inclusion have a translation dimension to them that ought to be considered. The thesis will explore some of the difficult questions in understanding what integration means for linguistic minorities and in the end argue that translation plays a role in the integration of linguistic minorities in the UK.

The present work was developed in the context of contemporary Translation Studies, in accordance with Post-Structuralist theories in the field of Social Studies. Adopting a critical view that attempts to reunite theory and practice, academy and industry, this study investigates the practice of subtitle translation - seen within the scope of audiovisual translation - based on a systemic and functional perspective. The theoretical and methodological bases are Polysystem Theory and the fundaments of Descriptive Translation Studies, which are here increased and adapted to comprehend the field of audiovisual translation. Subtitling is then studied from a large-scale context - including the institutions, professionals and proceedings involved in the subtitling of audiovisual materials - and focusing on progressively smaller units: media, technical parameters, syntactic and stylistic norms. Finally, by examining the process of translation in the area of subtitling, this study leads to reflections on the singular dimension of the translator s task - a gap in Descriptive Translation Studies and still little explored in translation theories in general - and to considerations on the possibility of combining the descriptive paradigm with research about the subjectivity intrinsic to translation.

Abstract:
The present dissertation is concerned with the interplays between translation and theatre, bringing together an array of creative practices rarely discussed together in previous scholarship. As this thesis shows, the process of theatre translation incorporates a multitude of creative practices that contribute to the linguistic, theatrical and cultural transfers between foreign texts and target theatrical contexts. Throughout the dissertation, overlaps and interactions between translation, adaptation and dramaturgy will be discussed reconsidering the borders of such practices. The dissertation introduces dramaturgy to the debate as a synthesising process through which translation and adaptive strategies generate meaning on- and off-stage. The thesis presents a holistic approach, one that acknowledges theatre translation as a continuum of creative practices (e.g. translation, adaptation, dramaturgy, devising) - both textual and performative - that shape and are shaped by theatre practices, theatrical systems and traditions, hence also directly contributing to the expansion of literary, theatrical and cultural canons. The dissertation wishes to facilitate and contribute to a theatrical turn in the discourse, by establishing translation within theatre. The dissertation situate itself in a cross-disciplinary space drawing on a variety of perspectives from Translation Studies, translation and identity, Theatre Studies, theatre histories, performance analysis, dramaturgy, minority theatre, sociological approaches to theatre, Adaptation Studies and Cultural Studies. Crossing thematic, disciplinary, cultural, theoretical as well as physical/geographical borders is an important feature of the dissertation and reflects both the multifaceted ness of contemporary theatre (and theatrical activities) and the interdisciplinary nature of present-day scholarly discourses. The issues presented in this dissertation will be supported by a diversity of examples featuring theatre productions from a multitude of social, cultural and national contexts using a variety of approaches to theatre making

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the strategies and attitudes of students towards translation in the context of language learning. The informants come from two different classes at an Upper Secondary vocational program. The study was born from the backdrop of discussions among some English teachers representing different theories on translation and language learning, meeting students endeavoring in language learning beyond the confinement of the classroom and personal experiences of translation in language learning. The curriculum and course plan for English at the vocational program emphasize two things of particular interest to our study; integration of the program outcomes and vocational language into the English course - so called meshed learning – and student awareness of their own learning processes. A background is presented of different contrasting methods in translation and language learning that is relevant to our discussion. However, focus is given to contemporary research on reforms within the Comparative Theory, as expressed in Translation in Language and Teaching (TILT), Contrastive Analysis and “The Third Space”. The results of the students’ reflections are presented as attempts to translate two different texts; one lyric and one technical vocational text. The results show a pragmatic attitude among the students toward tools like dictionaries or Google Translate, but also a critical awareness about their use and limits. They appear to prefer the use of first language to the target language when discussing the correct translation as they sought accuracy over meaning. Translation for them was a natural and problem-solving event worth a rightful place in language teaching.

Abstract:
With these words, Maurice Blanchot insists on the very mystery of all myth. It is also the case for the myth of the Narcissus that has known a considerable success in the medieval time but for which it is difficult to … a stable meaning. It is the famous Augustinian poet Ovidius myth that the medieval authors inherited. They added new meanings to the already rich legend, following the footsteps of Ovidius.Narcissus is foremost a figure in love. Narcissus is the unfortunate lover who suffers such a strong passion he dies from it. What he is in love with can be ignored in the medieval versions. Even if he loved a shadow, it is the intensity of his love and the funest consequences the texts insist on. Passion drives Narcissus on the road to death : spiritual death because of Madness et physical death. Narcissus was a prime subject for fin’amor poetry. Troubadours and trouveres made of Narcissus the perfect example of the fin amant between the XIIth and XIIIth centuries. Moreover Narcissus is the deeply linked to the representation of the melancholic that came from the psycho-physiological philosophical and medical theories of love.Moral Reading were also inspired by the myth. Indeed, Narcissus becomes a sinner full of flaws Under the Christian vision of the myth. Pride is the origin of all the flaws: vanity and arrogance are direct consequences. Narcissus becomes the perfect incarnation of these sins. Depending of the point of view the condemnation may vary but the idea is still the same: Narcissus is self-important and is too pleased with himself. Finally the water from the source, one of the most important aspect of the Narcissus mythology, became the meeting point of several traditions which interlaced in the medieval work: biblical water on one side and neoplatonician conceptions of reflection and ancient myth of Narcissus. The ancient fons transforms itself into a medieval fountain and a true mirror. The mirror becomes more and more independent from the surface of water. The phantasmatical dimension of the Narcissus love for his reflection is developed

Abstract:
MT is becoming a powerful tool for professional translators, language service providers and common users. The present work focuses on its quality, evaluating the translations produced by two neural MT systems – i.e. Google Translate and DeepL Translator – through manual error annotation. The data set used for this task is composed of semi-specialized German texts translated into Italian. Aim of the present work is to assess the quality of MT outputs for the data set considered and obtain a detailed overview of the type of errors made by the two neural MT systems examined. The first part of this work provides a theoretical background for MT and its evaluation. Chapter 1 deals with the definition of MT and summarizes its history. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the different MT architectures is provided, as well as an overview of the possible application scenarios and the different categories of users. Chapter 2 introduces the notion of quality in the translation field and the main automatic and manual methods applied to MT quality assessment tasks. A comprehensive analysis of some of the most significant studies on neural and phrase-based MT systems output quality is then provided. The second part of this work presents a quality assessment of the output produced by two neural MT systems, i.e. Google Translation and DeepL Translator. The evaluation was performed through manual error annotation based on a fine-grained error taxonomy. Chapter 3 outlines the methodology followed during the evaluation, with a description of the dataset, the neural MT systems chosen for the study, the annotation tool and the taxonomy used during the annotation task. Chapter 4 provides the results of the evaluation and a comment thereof, offering examples extracted from the annotated data set. The final part of this work summarizes the major findings of the present contribution. Results are then discussed, with a focus on their implication for future work.

Deeb, Zakia Ali. "A taxonomy of translation problems in translating from English to Arabic." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/229.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates translation problems in translating from English to Arabic. Despite the fact that there are some taxonomies available, none is based on empirical research; moreover, none can be considered comprehensive. The present study provides a ranked taxonomy of problems in translating from English to Arabic that was developed through two empirical studies. The first is a case-study of the researcher translating a published corpus of short translation-class texts. Since the aim of this project is pedagogical, students of translation were the target population of the second multi-subject study. Here, 56 undergraduate and 18 postgraduate students in Arabic —+ English translation classes at Al-Fateh University and the Academy of Graduate Studies in Libya translated a sub-set of the same texts. By comparing the two groups' performance, the researcher could also find out the effects of translation experience/proficiency on the type and severity of problems. The taxonomy consists of four levels: supra, main, sub and sub-sub categories. The supra category includes problems of ST Comprehension and TT Production and problems of Transfer Process. The main category includes Micro-Language problems, Macro-Text level problems and Strategies and Techniques problems. The sub-category includes problems of Grammar, Vocabulary, Spelling, Rhetorical and stylistic devices, Cohesion, Register and style, Background Knowledge and Culture. The sub-sub categories include forty seven categories such as problems of Word order, Fixed Expressions, Spelling Slips, Irony, Omission and Additions. A tentative ranking of the difficulty of problems is based on three factors: perceived difficulty, error count and error severity. What distinguishes the taxonomy formulated in the present study from existing ones is comprehensiveness, e.g. in combining problems of ST comprehension, TT production and problems of transfer process, or in combining problems of the language system and extra-textual problems; and the ranking adds another dimension. The thesis consists of six chapters: Chapter One outlines the theme of the project and presents the research questions. Chapter Two reviews the relevant literature with an emphasis on translation problems and errors. Chapter Three presents the researcher case-study which sets the ground for the multi-subject main-study in Chapter Four. Chapter Five provides a model of English —* Arabic translation problems as exemplified by the taxonomy of translation problems and discusses the ranking system used and its outcome. Chapter Six, Conclusion, evaluates the outcome of the study, assesses the methodology that has been used to investigate the issues set in the research questions and discusses implications for further research.

Abstract:
The loss in translation between languages has long been debated, and a current issue within Translation Studies is that of the cultural aspect. Using two opposing concepts by Lawrence Venuti; domestication that is used to assimilate the source culture into the target culture, and foreignization that is used to preserve and highlight the foreign culture in the target text, this paper examines how culture is transferred in literary translation between English and Swedish. In order to establish which strategies are used, data consisting of 30 passages from the American novel Dead Until Dark (2001), and the corresponding passages in two different Swedish translations of it, is analysed linguistically. While the first translation is found to show no marked preference for either strategy, the second translation uses domestication thrice as often as foreignization. However, both translations use domestication in 9 out of 10 examples in the category ‘Figurative use of language’, which suggests a marked difficulty in preserving the source culture while translating metaphorical language. The analysis also shows a difference in the way the strategies are employed, suggesting a further division of the strategies into ‘passive’ and ‘active’. The author calls for further research on the effect of such a division.

Baumgarten, Stefan. "Translation as an ideological interface : English translations of Hitler's Mein Kampf." Thesis, Aston University, 2007. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/14863/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is located within the framework of descriptive translation studies and critical discourse analysis. Modern translation studies have increasingly taken into account the complexities of power relations and ideological management involved in the production of translations. Paradoxically, persuasive political discourse has not been much touched upon, except for studies following functional (e.g. Schäffner 2002) or systemic-linguistic approaches (e.g. Calzada Pérez 2001). By taking 11 English translations of Hitler’s Mein Kampf as prime examples, the thesis aims to contribute to a better understanding of the translation of politically sensitive texts. Actors involved in political discourse are usually more concerned with the emotional appeal of their message than they are with its factual content. When such political discourse becomes the locus of translation, it may equally be crafted rhetorically, being used as a tool to persuade. It is thus the purpose of the thesis to describe subtle ‘persuasion strategies’ in institutionally translated political discourse. The subject of the analysis is an illustrative corpus of four full-text translations, two abridgements, and five extract translations of Mein Kampf. Methodologically, the thesis pursues a top-down approach. It begins by delineating sociocultural and situative-agentive conditions as causal factors impinging on the individual translations. Such interactive and interpersonal factors determined textual choices. The overall textual analysis consists of an interrelated corpus-driven and corpus-based approach. It demonstrates how corpus software can be fruitfully harnessed to discern ‘ideological significations’ in the translated texts. Altogether, the thesis investigates how translational decision-makers attempted to position the source text author and his narrative in line with overall rhetorical purposes.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with a particularly problematic area of Arabic-English translation, an activity likely to expand considerably as this century continues, and especially in non-literary domains. The past decade has seen increasing attention being paid by translation and other scholars to such issues as ideology, intervention, the role of narratives and the involvement of translation in global news dissemination. Not surprisingly, translation from Arabic looms large in all these areas. Political speeches and statements, often containing a disconcertingly unfamiliar blend of political and religious discourse, invite or require translation (or summary) into English by various agencies with their own particular ideological stances and agenda. Even with accurate and competent linguistic transfer there are many forms of possible manipulation. Equally, poor quality translation between two such incongruent languages can easily produce material that appears at least partly incomprehensible and may tend to make the source text and its producer(s) seem ridiculous to the target reader. Examples of this abound in the available translations of two of Saddam Hussein's speeches in the months leading up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. To prepare the ground for an examination of these translations, this study first traces the history of ideas about translation and the development of the modem `interdiscipline' of Translation Studies. It then moves on to consider the problems of equivalence and translatability in Arabic-English translation, not only at the word and sentence level but also at that of whole texts, and extends this enquiry into the area of textuality and especially the phenomenon of intertextuality. Intertextuality is then seen to be carried within languages and cultures by the vehicle of ideology and discourse, and thus to represent a particular challenge to translators. Problems in the translation of the Saddam speeches are subsequently identified and discussed in the context of target reader norms and expectations, and in terms of a still rather hazy notion of `communicative equivalence

Abstract:
This thesis aims to elucidate the translation process by devising a way of retrieving evidence of this process from its output. It further aims to assess the claims made by some scholars concerning the possible existence of Translation Universals. In order to isolate the interaction of texts and contexts, a corpus of American short stories was created, with their translations into Persian published after the 1979 Revolution. Three complementary methodologies gave a rounded picture: (1) Corpus-based Descriptive Translation Studies; (2) The pragmatic and rhetorically-based approach of Thinking Translation devised at St Andrews; and ‎(3) The analytical framework mostly established by Halliday in his Systemic Functional Grammar.‎ Approaching the process of translation in the specific order devised in this thesis provided four vantage points to analyse the data in a systematic way from linguistic, discourse, cultural and literary views before reaching what are at once the most personal and most characteristic aspects of a translator's work. The research begins with a literature review of the field and an account of linguistic constraints and of all Translation Universals hypothesised so far, followed by an extensive analysis of data in two consecutive chapters. With reference to the choices made in this corpus, it is discussed in the Conclusions chapter that most of the Translation Universals so far claimed are not in fact universal. It is the role of the translator which has emerged as the determining factor in producing a translated text, and thus as the key to resolving the issues explored in this thesis. It seems there are no constraints beyond the translator's reach, and there are no parameters which do not involve the translator, who introduces his or her own choices, or manipulates certain parameters. Only when they have done so, will the translation, as both process and product, be accomplished.

Abstract:
Abstract   This study analyses the translation of a technical guidebook in the subject field of hydropower generation. The aim is to identify and apply functional translation theories when translating general technical terms, industry terms and contract terms. The theoretical basis for the study consists of Eugene Nida’s and Vinay & Darbelnet’s models for translation as well as theories on terminology by Rune Ingo and Therésa Cabré. During the translation process, technical terms were identified and subsequently translated using one or more of the theories described. The result was then analysed and discussed. Although the study is not comprehensive enough to draw significant conclusions, the result indicates that in order to render the best possible translation of technical terms, a combination of theories and methods are best applied; direct translation regarding systematized terminology similar to general technical terms and oblique translation, or dynamic equivalence, regarding industry terms and contract terms. The results further suggest that structural analysis is of great value in order to determine the correct level of the term. In addition, the translator’s experience and knowledge of the subject field as well as readiness to consult parallel texts seem to be vital to the outcome of the translation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African author Linda Rode‘s book In die Nimmer-Immer Bos (2009a) and Elsa Silke‘s English translation thereof In the Never-Ever Wood (2009b) have won a number of prizes in South Africa, which is evidence both of the quality of the anthology and its translation, as well as of the continued significance of the folktale genre in today‘s fast-paced, modern society. People continue to make sense of the world through telling stories and, although the stories told today might be marked by life in the 21st century, our ancestors‘ stories are still appreciated by many. Although Rode‘s tales are not unlike other folktales, her collection differs in that it is a mosaic of cultures and their folklore spanning the globe, a book that appeals to the whole family, and to young readers and listeners in particular. Through a practical translation into German of selected tales from Silke‘s English version of Rode‘s book, the present thesis investigates ways and means of translating folktales for children. A functional approach was suggested, taking into account the European audience as well as the original intention of the author. As such, the author‘s style was naturalised and an attempt was made to replicate it in the target language, whereas culture-specific items relevant to the setting of the individual tales were retained. Hans J. Vermeer‘s skopos theory, as enhanced by Christiane Nord, as well as Lawrence Venuti‘s concepts of foreignisation and domestication were discussed, amongst other relevant theories. Many of the challenges discussed in the annotations to the practical translation typically occur in the translation of literature for children, and the study thus hopes to make a contribution to research on the translation of literature for children. Interviews conducted for the purpose of the present study furthermore proved the positive impact of good cooperation between the people involved in a translation project on the final translation product. The resulting translation, meant to impart knowledge and pleasure to the audience, furthermore serves as a translation sample that is intended to entice German publishers to commission a translation of Rode‘s anthology for the German book market.
