Abstract:
Translation of academic paper abstracts has always been the point at issue in academic discourse. Translators are, particularly, faced with the problem to solve: should the translated abstract reflect accurately the original, thus presenting its formal features, or should it be modified, so that the target text becomes adjusted to the linguistic, cognitive and cultural expectations of the target reader. Taking into account that the techniques employed by the translators are predetermined by their strategic approach to academic paper abstract translation, the identification of the prevalent techniques in the target texts makes it possible to point out the most frequently taken translators’ stances. Specifically, the comparative-contrastive and descriptive analyses of the Ukrainian-English micro- and macro-unit pairs undertaken in this study enables us to outline the prevalent strategic approaches to this type of translation. The study shows that the techniques used by the translators involve calques, word-for-word rendering, obligatory and optional transformations, translation shift at the textual level, re-statement, etc. The target texts that exhibit the translators’ preference for a certain type of the techniques are distributed into the classes of literal (31 out of 71 cases), modified literal (37 cases) and free (re-contextualized) translation (3 cases). The findings of the study are commented on and generalized in the conclusions.

Abstract:
The goal of the paper is twofold: I first theorize ‘solidarity’ in relation to translation, suggesting that both are about bridging differences and perhaps salvaging similarities. Then I illustrate the ideas with an example from a study of the Polish reception of translated postcolonial literature, seeing reception as an act of selective salvage and subsequent reconfiguration of meaning. The term solidarity punctuates seminal texts on translation and politics, power and identity (Spivak 2004, Tymoczko 2007, Cronin 2006) and yet it has not been systematically theorized in translation and interpreting studies (cf. Baker 2015). I argue that examining diverse definitions and discussions of solidarity from neighbouring disciplines will allow us to employ the term with greater precision and thus make the most of its visionary appeal but also its analytical and critical potential. For instance, solidarity is conceived of as a guarantee of local intra-group cohesion founded upon perceived sameness, and as a mechanism for forging inter-group relations globally or transnationally by bridging differences of country, class and creed, and by salvaging or constructing similarities. On a conceptual level, therefore, solidarity operates in a way not dissimilar to translation itself – negotiating local and global identities with both inclusive and discriminatory effects – while on a more practical level solidarities attempted across linguistic barriers are helped, or hindered, by interlingual translation and interpreting. To illustrate some of the ideas, I analyse the Polish reception of translated postcolonial literature in the 1980s and 1990s. Using an extensive corpus of book reviews, I demonstrate that translated postcolonial narratives resonated for some reviewers with Polish history, going against the grain of a long tradition of othering attitudes to postcolonial non-Europeans and marking a new sense of transnational similarity. I then ask if this re-negotiation of similarity and difference, enabled by literary translation, may pave a way to Polish-postcolonial solidarity.

Abstract Crowdsourcing and collaborative translation, activities emerging on the translation scene recently, are playing an increasingly important role in the world of professional translation and in the localization industry. This article focuses on a study carried out to analyze the perception of a group of translator trainees regarding these new translation practices. A total of 20 undergraduate students participated in the research and were asked to perform a collaborative localization task using an online collaborative platform. Data subjected to a quantitative and qualitative analysis suggest that online collaborative translation tasks enhance students’ motivation towards collaborative translation and help consolidate their technical knowledge about specific localization tools and files.

Abstract:
This study was focused on evaluating the quality of the Indonesian-English translation of the research abstract written by the students of Harapan Bangsa University. The analysis included the analysis of translation quality in terms of accuracy, naturalness, acceptability, and readability as well as the translation ideology. The results of the study showed that the accuracy of the research abstract translation was dominated by highly accurate translation and less accurate translation in the target language which shared the same percentage as many as 36%. In terms of naturalness, it showed that 34% of the translation was categorized into highly natural. With regard to translation acceptability, it showed that 61% of the data belonged to acceptable. Meanwhile, in terms of translation readability, it showed that 75% of the data was categorized as readable. The register and genre of the research abstract texts and its translation were kept equivalent and holding the same purposes as it was translated overtly. In translating the research abstract text, it is suggested that the translator could highly consider the accuracy, naturalness, acceptability, and readability of the translation, particularly for target readers. With regard to the translation ideology, the translator is suggested to grasp the register and genre of the text before the translation process and regard the target readers to determine whether the text should be translated covertly or overtly.

Abstract This study considers the process of rewriting under a lens provided by the field of Translation Studies. One subset of translation, called “intralingual translation,” is translation within the same language. This concept provides a new paradigm in which to analyze “rewritten” texts, such as Chronicles and Jubilees. These texts contain changes that can be categorized within the paradigm of intralingual translation, showing that translation overlaps with rewriting and shedding significant light on the latter.

Метою даної дипломної роботи є аналіз особливостей перекладу науково-технічних текстів на матеріалі німецької мови. В роботі розглянуті теоретичні та практичні аспекти перекладу з німецької мови на українську з застосуванням основних перекладацьких трансформацій, значна увага приділялася дослідженню термінів та термінології в перекладацькому аспекті. В даній роботі розглянута тема перекладу деяких жанрів науково-технічної літератури. Оскільки вибір варіантів перекладу, в тому числі й застосування трансформацій, знаходяться в залежності не тільки від норм мови перекладу, але і від стилістичних особливостей конкретного тексту, на етапі доперекладацького аналізу тексту оригіналу виявляються основні стильові риси останнього, які в процесі перекладу поряд з іншими факторами відіграють роль регуляторів застосування трансформацій. Найчастіше під час перекладу приходиться вводити нові одиниці, що мотивовано дотриманням норм української мови та лексичної сполучуваності слів української мови, яка значно і в дуже багатьох випадках відрізняється від слів німецької мови. Ведення допомагає підвищити ясність змісту перекладу. Термінологічні сполучення в українській та німецькій мовах в певній мірі є такими, що вже історично склалися та закріпилися в мові наукових та технічних текстів. Тому введення нових елементів та опущення деяких, характерних німецькій мові, можуть застосовуватися паралельно. Дуже типовим під час перекладу також є використання прийому генералізації понять, або конкретизація. Логічний розвиток серед трансформацій займає чи не найголовніше місце. Це обумовлено специфічними реаліями, які існують в німецькій мові. Отже, поряд з граматичними трансформаціями, лексичні мають неабияке значення для виконання правильного, повного перекладу. Тема дипломної роботи актуальна і потребує постійного накопичення нових фактів, їх систематизації, набуття досвіду в перекладі науково-технічних текстів.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the peculiarities of the translation of scientific and technical texts on the material of the German language. Theoretical value. The paper considers the theoretical and practical aspects of the translation of the German language into Ukrainian with the use of the main translation transformations, a great deal of attention was paid to the study of terms and terminology in the translation aspect. In this paper, the theme of the translation of certain genres of scientific and technical literature is considered. Since the choices of translation, including the use of transformations are dependent not only on the rules of the target language, but also on the stylistic features of a text during translation analysis of the original text are the main stylistic features of the latter, which in the translation process, along with other factors play the role of regulators of the use of transformations. Often in translation must introduce new units, motivated by compliance with Ukrainian language and lexical Collocations Ukrainian language, which significantly and in many cases different from the words of German Terminological connections in the Ukrainian and German languages to a certain extent are those that have historically formed and are enshrined in the language of scientific and technical texts. Therefore, the introduction of new elements and the omission of some, typical of German, can be applied in parallel. A very typical translation is also the use of generalizations of concepts, or specification. Logical development among transformations is perhaps the most important place. This is due to the specific realities that exist in the German language. Consequently, besides grammatical transformations, lexical ones are of great importance for the correct, complete translation. The topic of the thesis is relevant and requires constant accumulation of new facts, their systematization, gaining experience in the translation of scientific and technical texts.

The Abstract Data Model (ADM) was developed by Sanderson [19] to model and predict semantic loss in data translation between computer languages. In this work, the ADM was applied to eight languages that were not considered as part of the original work. Some of the languages were found to support semantic features, such as the restriction semantics for inheritance found in languages like XML Schemas and Java, which could not be represented in the ADM. A proposal was made to extend the ADM to support these semantic features, and the requirements and implications of implementing that proposal were considered.

The supporting document also provides the historical background and influences which have contributed to Block's overall process and techniques. These influences include the Abstract Expressionists, Carl Jung, Ferdinand de Saussure, John Dewey, Theodor Adorno, Joan Mitchell and Gerhard Richter. In the supporting document Block probes the idea that non-objective painting is more than a language confined by linguistic elements of sign, signifier, and signified, but is a process of thinking, which is communicated on a higher level of perception than verbal speech or visual symbolism. Block will discuss how she translates experiences from the metaphysical realm of feeling and thought to the physical reality of paint and surface which communicates the experience to the viewer.

MTsim (Mobile Traffic Simulator) is an Ericsson AB internal software application that is part of 2Gsim. It is used to simulate elements of a GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network for feature testing and automated testing. It is written in the programming language TSS Language, also known as SMILE which is a proprietary Ericsson programming language. SMILE is based on the principles of state matrix programming which in essence means that each program is on its own a finite state machine. The language is old and was originally intended as a macro language for smaller test programs, not for applications the size of MTsim.

It is of interest to evaluate the feasibility of performing an automatic conversion of applications written in SMILE, with special interest in converting MTsim, to a Java framework since Java has many advantages compared to SMILE. Java, as a language, is well suited for larger applications, there are numerous well supported tools and there is a much wider spread competence than there is for SMILE.

It is clear that in order to do a full conversion of a SMILE program to a Java framework two applications must be implemented. First a Java framework, which acts as a run time environment, must be designed which can host the translated programs. The other part is an actual translator which takes a SMILE program as input and ouputs a translated Java program. A more sophisticated framework is preferred since it makes the actual translated programs more light weight and easy to read which means higher degree of maintainability.

There are different ways to implement state machines in Java but the most flexible and versatile is to implement it as a black-box framework in an object oriented way where the framework has sophisticated mechanisms for message and event handling which is central to any state machine framework.

The translation for SMILE can easily be done by using a AST (abstract syntax tree) representation, which is a full representation of the SMILE program in tree-form. The AST is obtained from an intermediate state of the SMILE program compiler.

Abstract:
This thesis project examines both inner and outer circumstances of knowledge in an attempt to emphasize the importance of personal reflection. I search for answers on how to communicate feelings through colour and form by studying Mark Rothko and the abstract expressionism. A personal reflection is made parallelly to expand my own understanding of the subject and my own role in relation to it. I also explore painting as amethod of deepening my understanding of Rothko. Mark Rothko is both subject of study and tutor as I give myself the task of translating his art into my own design. The result offers thoughts and ideas on the significance of the work of hand, the use of colour and the meaning of intention, which I claim are important aspects when aiming for emotional results. However I also reflect upon the fact that the communication remains individual and that it is therefore problematic to confirm success in this matter.
Detta är ett undersökande arbete som vänder sig både inåt och utåt. Det är en djupdykning i Mark Rothkos konstnärskap som sker parallellt med en personlig reflektion. Inledningsvis handlar det om att arbeta i gränslandet mellan konst och design och hurdet kan se ut. I förlängningen handlar det om hur den konstnärliga historien kan fungera som inspiratör och vägledare för innebörd och uttryck i formgivningen. Genom att studera den abstrakta expressionismen och Mark Rothko söker jag svar på hur känslomässig kommunikation kan ske genom färg och form. Förutom litterär research utför jag också en praktiskt undersökning där jag använder måleriet som en metod för att förstå mitt studieobjekt; Mark Rothko. Målet är att översätta Mark Rothkos konst till min design. Det handlar om att studera, internalisera och applicera. Resultatet bjuder in till en diskussion om handlagets, färgens och intentionens betydelse för formgivningen, där jag hävdar att dessa aspekter är viktiga för ett emotionellt berörande resultat, men att kommunikationen förblir individuell.

According to Frege and many of his followers, there is no “metaphysical distance” between the two sides of an acceptable abstraction principle. How should this attractive idea be understood? An analysis is developed in terms of the existence of a translation from the language concerned with the relevant abstract objects to a language not committed to such objects, such that this translation maps one side of the abstraction principle to the other. Next, two different notions of predicativity are distinguished: one pertaining to the background higher-order logic, and another associated with the abstraction principle itself. Finally, it is shown that only abstraction which is predicative in the latter sense satisfies our explication of the attractive idea about no “metaphysical distance”. This provides a reason to favor a conception of abstraction which is predicative in this sense.

Saving Abstraction takes up the conflicted history of Morton Feldman’s most important collaboration—his work with Dominique and John de Menil on music for the Rothko Chapel in Houston. These collaborators struggled over fundamental questions about the emotional efficacy of artistic practice and its potential translation into religious feeling. At the center of this study is the question of ecumenism—that is, in what terms can religious encounters be staged for fruitful dialog to take place? And how might abstraction (both visual and musical) be useful to achieving it? This was a dilemma for Feldman, whose music sought to produce sublime “abstract experience,” as well as for the de Menils, who envisioned the Rothko Chapel as a space for spiritual intervention into late modernity. Saving Abstraction develops two central concepts: “abstract ecumenism” and “agonistic universalism.” The former characterizes a broad spiritual orientation within postwar musical modernism and experimentalism that aspired to altered states of ego-loss. This emerged as a renewed religious sensibility in late modernist experimentalism. The latter concept describes the particular religious form that Feldman’s music achieves within Rothko Chapel—an ascetic mode of existence that endures hopefully the aporia of postwar modernization’s destructiveness and modernism’s failure to effectively counter it.

The third of Dostoevsky’s five major novels, it is at once a powerful political tract and a profound study of atheism, depicting the disarray which follows the appearance of a band of modish radicals in a small provincial town. Dostoevsky compares infectious radicalism to the devils that drove the Gadarene swine over the precipice in his vision of a society possessed by demonic creatures that produce devastating delusions of rationality. Dostoevsky is at his most imaginatively humorous in Devils: the novel is full of buffoonery and grotesque comedy. The plot is loosely based on the details of a notorious case of political murder, but Dostoevsky weaves suicide, rape, and a multiplicity of scandals into a compelling story of political evil. _ This new translation also includes the chapter ‘Stavrogin’s Confession’, which was initially considered to be too shocking to print. In this edition it appears where the author originally intended it.

Abstract In the sociology of scientific knowledge and the sociology of translation, heterogeneous networks have been studied in terms of practices and so-called actor-networks. However, scientific practices are intellectually structured by codes. Cognitive structures interact and co-construct the organization of scholars and discourses into research programs, specialties, and disciplines. The intellectual organization of the sciences adds to and feeds back on the configurations of authors and texts. The social, textual, and cognitive sub-dynamics select upon each other asymmetrically. Selections can further be selected for stabilization along trajectories and then also be globalized—symbolically generalized—into regimes of expectations.

Abstract In plants, genome expression is linked to the transcribed mRNAs that are synthesized by RNA polymerase. Following its move to the cytoplasm, the generated mRNA is briefly translated to the encoded protein. If transcription and translation are dependent on the family of RNA polymerase, these two phenomena could be interfered with through the process designated as gene regulation. Thus, large molecules of RNA (single-stranded or double-stranded) consequently sliced into small molecules produce nascent small interfering RNA ranging from 21 to 27 nucleotides. This chapter revisits the biogenesis of these two types of RNAi, miRNA and siRNA, and notably their involvement in plant gene regulation. Following their sequential transcription and their specific involvement, we will consider the sources and roles of RNA interference in plants and we will look at their detection in fruit crops. We discuss their applications and the risk assessment studies in fruit crops.

AbstractFinitary Idealized Concurrent Algol ($$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA ) is a prototypical programming language combining functional, imperative, and concurrent computation. There exists a fully abstract game model of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA , which in principle can be used to prove equivalence and safety of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA programs. Unfortunately, the problems are undecidable for the whole language, and only very rudimentary decidable sub-languages are known.We propose leafy automata as a dedicated automata-theoretic formalism for representing the game semantics of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA . The automata use an infinite alphabet with a tree structure. We show that the game semantics of any $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA term can be represented by traces of a leafy automaton. Conversely, the traces of any leafy automaton can be represented by a $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA term. Because of the close match with $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA , we view leafy automata as a promising starting point for finding decidable subclasses of the language and, more generally, to provide a new perspective on models of higher-order concurrent computation.Moreover, we identify a fragment of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA that is amenable to verification by translation into a particular class of leafy automata. Using a locality property of the latter class, where communication between levels is restricted and every other level is bounded, we show that their emptiness problem is decidable by reduction to Petri net reachability.

Abstract In this chapter we look at the origins of animal welfare as a societal concern and the interplay between the concept of animal welfare, economics and policy. We firstly propose adjustments to the 'standard view' of the development of animal welfare concerns (which we refer to as the Harrison-Brambell- FAWC (HBF) sequence). For example, we suggest that the role of science in setting animal welfare policy is a more complex process than is sometimes acknowledged. We discuss the application of economics to animal welfare including the analysis of the costs of animal welfare improvements to more recent work on trade-offs relating to animal welfare across the supply chain. Considering this range of uses of economics relating to animal welfare, we identify that the question of how to value animal welfare in economic terms remains unresolved. Lastly, we suggest that the period 1965-2008 may come to be regarded as a 'golden era' for the translation of animal welfare concerns into positive socio-political actions. We discuss a raft of issues which appear to have diminished the position of animal welfare in the policy 'pecking order'. However, societal concern over animal welfare will mean that government and others will need to be cautious of breaching 'red lines'. On a more positive note, the public profile that animal welfare enjoys will continue to provide the opportunity for policy and business innovations to improve animals' lives.
