Abstract:
In this paper, I analyze Russian translations and close imitations of Spanish Romancero poetry composed between 1789 and the 1930s, as well as Russian original poems of the same period marked by “Spanish” motifs. I discuss the Spanish romance as an international European genre, and show how this verse form’s distinctive features were transferred into Russian poetry and how the Russian version – or, rather, several Russian versions – of this form came into being. I pay special attention to the genesis of the stanza composed of a regular sequence of feminine (F) and masculine (m) clausulae FFFm. In Johann Gottfried Herder’s Der Cid, this clausula pattern was combined with unrhymed trochaic tetrameters, but, in early twentieth-century Russia, it emancipated from this metrical form, having retained the semantic leitmotifs of the Spanish romance, as well as its “Spanish” theme. I contextualize other translation equivalents of romance verse and compare them to the original Spanish verse form. I show (1) which forms poets used in translating romance verse and how those forms correlate (formally and functionally) with the original meter. Further, I discuss (2) when and how the trochaic tetrameters rhyming on even lines (XRXR) – originally used in translations of Spanish romances in German and English poetry – became the equivalent of romance verse in the Russian tradition. Finally, I demonstrate (3) how, in Konstantin Balmont’s translations of Spanish poetry, the FFFm clausula pattern lost its connection with trochee. After Balmont, other poets of the Silver Age of Russian literature started using it in original non-trochaic compositions to express “Spanish” semantics.

Abstract:
This article studies the problems of translating Silver Age Russian poetry into French, namely Vladimir Mayakovsky, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Nikolai Gumilev. The author examines the main anthologies of Russian poetry published in France in the 20th century: the anthologies of 1947, 1965 and 1985, all three published by Paris publishers. This article focuses on the peculiarities of the translations, when analyzing the translation transformations and examining the strategies of translation practice in France. The linguistic form, consisting of the four macro-levels: morphology, word formation, vocabulary and syntax — is one of the most difficult both to translate and to compare translations. What strategies French translators use determines the degree of equivalence of the translation. The author also looks at the notion of the creativity of poetic translation and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of rhyming and non-rhyming translations. Unrhymed translation brings us closer to conveying the meaning of the poem, but it deprives the poem of rhythm and melody, as well as reduces emotionality. A rhyming translation can convey the emotionality of the poem, but the search for rhyme can lead to approximation and diminish the equivalence of the poem. The author explains the choice of each translation strategy: in a rhyming translation, translators seek to preserve the author’s rhyme image, the “breath” of the poem; while in a non-rhyming translation, the translator is often “closer” to the original.

Abstract:
In recent years, the task of translating from one language to another has attracted wide attention from researchers due to numerous practical uses, ranging from the translation of various texts and speeches, including the so-called “machine” translation, to the dubbing of films and numerous other video materials. To study this problem, we propose to use the information-theoretic method for assessing the quality of translations. We based our approach on the classification of sources of text variability proposed by A.N. Kolmogorov: information content, form, and unconscious author’s style. It is clear that the unconscious “author’s” style is influenced by the translator. So researchers need special methods to determine how accurately the author’s style is conveyed, because it, in a sense, determines the quality of the translation. In this paper, we propose a method that allows us to estimate the quality of translation from different translators. The method is used to study translations of classical English-language works into Russian and, conversely, Russian classics into English. We successfully used this method to determine the attribution of literary texts.

Abstract:
Based on the material of the translation of poems of Tatar poets of the 60s, made by R. Kozhevnikova, the features of the representation of hybrid identity, which is carried out both “within”, “inside” homogeneous culture, and “on the boundaries”, “between” different traditions are studied. Unlike other Russian-speaking poets-translators such as R. Bukharaev, who is painfully experiencing a crisis of his identity, R. Kozhevnikova feels an organic involvement in the traditions of both Tatar and Russian cultures. It is concluded that in R. Kozhevnikova’s lyrics and in her translations of Tatar poetry, there is a synthetizing tendency focused on overcoming the boundaries between different historical and cultural meanings. But unlike the original works, which have specific accentuation and actualize ordinary relations between the word and the reality defined by it, in translated texts there are not identical value and semantic horizons. The means of clarifying the original text used by the translator as a form of inter-literary dialogue are described. It is stated that the transformation of an “alien” verbal and artistic practice in a “different” / “own” in the translation process is followed by the strengthening of the emotional and suggestive component of the text, its musical and sound, rhythmic and intonational instrumentation carried out by means of the Russian language, the development of subjective situation which makes the basis of the work, identification with the genres familiar to the Russian-speaking reader.

Abstract:
The article is the first analysis of the literary activity of Konstantin Timkovsky (1814–1881), translator and propagandist of Spanish literature in Russia. Unlike his predecessors, Timkovsky had a good knowledge of written and partly spoken Spanish and did not use intermediary translations. Timkovsky is also distinguished by the number of works and authors translated, namely Cervantes, Calderon, Francisco de Rojas, Leandro Moratín, Agustín Moreto. Being a pioneer in the direct translation of Spanish dramaturgy, Timkovsky assumed regular but inconsistent shortenings of texts: he omitted passages that, due to internal or external censorship, might have seemed obscene or affected religion. In Calderon’s drama “Life is a Dream” all references to Russia and Russians were replaced by Bohemia and Bohemians; instead of translating puns, Timkovsky uses comments: he declares that it is impossible to transmit the wordplay into Russian and quotes the original text for comparison. The most important and still nowhere mentioned feature of all Timkovsky’s works is the choice of prose for the translation of poetic dramatic texts. The sentence in the Petrashevsky case and the exile prevented Timkovsky from carrying out a large-scale project: to compile a translated set of Spanish literature and to write its “complete history” in the form of a series of articles.

Abstract:
A translator of classical literature is faced with the task of identifying the goal and methods of conveying the national originality of a generally recognized literary masterpiece. The article considers this problem in the context of translations of the novel in verse Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin into English and French. At the same time, it raises the questions of the translators attitude to their own work, the depth of interpretation of the original, the degree of adaptation of the original text for a foreign reader. In addition, a matter of great importance is the translators assessment of the result of their own work, which is reflected in their comments and preface to the translated text. The goal of this research is to substantiate the importance of the linguistic and cultural function of comments and prefaces, which also made it possible to identify the features of the translations themselves and emphasize their continuity. When translating works of classical literature, translators do not limit their task to the translation itself. In this regard, the preface-commentary complex is viewed in the article as an important part of the translators work. The research material includes about 40 English and over 10 French translations made in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries and presented in chronological order. Mainly those that are accompanied by prefaces and comments were selected for the analysis. The research helps to present the translations of the novel not only in terms of continuity, but also in terms of their authors critical attitude to each other, thus bringing these components of translation into the focus of a professional discussion. As a result of comparing various translations, it is possible to identify the difficulties of literary translation of the novel Eugene Onegin , which include the preservation of its poetic form, the panoramic nature of its composition, including scenes of life of the 19th century Russian nobility, and the national spirit associated with the translation of national and cultural vocabulary. The research confirms that the very fact of numerous translations of this novel, which is paradigmatic for the Russian culture, can be viewed as a form of its worldwide recognition, regardless of the professional and reader's assessment of these translations. This enables us to speak of the existence of a strong tradition that has developed in European translation studies around this particular work.

Abstract:
Extensive translation experience, corresponding theories and concepts, and taking into account the needs of modern society for literary translation are the criteria for evaluating a literary text translation nowadays. The paper offers stages to form the like criteria for evaluating a translated literary text as an integrative multicomponent model. It takes into account aesthetic information, text coherence, systemic dominants and frequency of style features, diachronic distance, the translator’s individual style, the target language literary norm and society’s needs specifics. The components might be taken as nuclear ones while considering translations of the past and present, as well as a two-step translation through an intermediary language. However, when we are faced with translations from Russia’s regional languages into Russian, the named general criteria are not enough, since we ought to implement the strategy of cultural self-realization as well. Buryat-Russian translation parallels have made the authors come to a new criterion model.

Abstract:
The article deals with the issue of translation of Zahiriddin Babur`s poems into Russian language by the connoisseur of the Uzbek classical literature Minevich Lev Penkovsky and the specific pecularities of translation of the poems. The special attention paid by the translator to the unity of form and content in the translation process, the original was reflected in the Russian language. It should be noted that the translator has accurately recreated mastered poetic elements, such as the redif, sound symbolism and have achieved classic rhymes of the rubaiyat. All this contributed to the interpretation of the main idea of the rubaiyat, inner feelings of the lyrical hero and historical realities. When translating rubais, L.M.Penkovskiy effectively used various artistic techniques and means, such as repetitions, rhyme, rhythm and metaphors. The article not only analyzes advantages of the translation forms in Russian, but some lacks and mistakes while expressing original content of Babur`s poems by the translator. For example, conveying the inner experience of the lyrical hero (which is the author himself) accurately, biographical information related to Babur personally are not carried out by the translator. These and other moments are specifically and critically reviewed in the work. However, all this does not detract from the artistic skill of the poet and translator L.M.Penkovsky, who made a lot of effort to ensure that the Russian reader could enjoy all the charm of the works of the recognized master of lyric lines Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur.

The article deals with the problem of preserving the rhyme traditional for Russian poetry in translations into English. A brief analysis of Russian and foreign linguists’ works on the theory and practice of poetic translation shows that rhyme in English poetry does not play such a significant role as it does in Russian poetry. Opinions of English-speaking readers coincide with the opinion of translators. However, adequate versions of Russian poems in English with preservation of rhymes of original verses are the preferred type of poetic translation. The article deals with the problem of preserving the rhyme, characteristic of Russian poetry, in translations into English. The purpose of this scientific research is to conduct a brief analysis of the works of Russian and foreign linguists on the theory and practice of poetic translation to reveal the role and significance of the category of rhyme in English and Russian poetry. The author pays special attention to the opinion of translators of Russian poetry into English and English-speaking readers of translated Russian lyrics in the context of preserving rhyme or deviation from it. As a result of the conducted research, the author comes to the conclusion that rhyme does not play such a significant role for foreign linguists and translators as it does for their Russian-speaking counterparts. A more attractive form of poetry for them is vers libre. Consequently, the issues of rhyme reproduction for English translators are not of paramount importance. The main emphasis is on the meaning of the translated text, not its form. Opinions of English-speaking readers coincide with the opinion of translators. In addition, the article presents summary information of the conducted comparative linguistic analysis of 275 poems by B. Okudzhava and their originals. The analysis shows that in percentage terms the number of rhymed translations from the total number of translated texts is about 40%. However, the overwhelming number of English translations of poems Okudzhava - about 60% - belongs to unrhymed translations. Nevertheless, the author of the article emphasizes the need to preserve rhyme in translations as an integral part of the Russian classical verse and believes that adequate versions of Russian poems in English with preservation of original rhyme are the preferred type of poetic translation.

Abstract:
The subject of this article is the methods of terminographical translation of legal terminology of the Sakha language employed in the Russian-Yakut legal dictionary. The goal of this work consists in determination of peculiarities of legal terminological lexicon and ways of conveying it to Yakut language. Terminographical analysis of the dictionary demonstrated that there is no strict rule for selecting the framework legal terms and terminological phrases. For example, the legal status of some commonly used words is questionable; the so-called “non-terminological” parts of speech manifest as the head term, and the form of feminine gender is presented excessively, which the authors propose on the equal basis with the form of masculine gender. This article is first to conduct a detailed analysis of instances of application of Russian-Yakut translation techniques of legal terms, such as equivalent, alternative translation, calquing, transliteration, as well as descriptive, situational and other translation methods. The article is based on the inductive-deductive method and method of selective sampling for terminographical analysis of translations of translation of legal terms and terminological phrases. The results terminographical analysis of the Russian-Yakut translation of legal allow concluding on the need for comprising the more extensive Russian-Yakut dictionaries of legal and sociopolitical terms.

abstract: The purpose of this research is to assemble a collection of Russian Art song repertoire selected for beginner level training, with an exposition of the criteria for their appropriateness as teaching pieces. This examination defines the scope of vocal, technical, language and interpretive abilities required for the performance of Russian Art song literature. It also establishes the need for a pedagogical approach that is free from Eurocentric cultural biases against Russian language and culture. Intended as a reference for teachers and students to simplify the introduction of Russian Art song into the repertoire of the advanced secondary or beginning undergraduate student, it includes a discussion of learning priorities and challenges particular to native English speakers relative to successful Russian language lyric diction assimilation, with solutions. This study is designed to furnish material for a published edition of songs in the appropriate transpositions for high, medium and low voice including word-for- word and sense translations with IPA transcriptions, along with program notes for each piece. Repertoire is selected from the works of Alyab'yev, Gurilyov, Varlamov, Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, as well as a few folk songs. The repertoire is grouped by difficulty and accompanied by English translations, interpretive analyses of the Russian Language poetry, and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions modified for lyric diction. The degrees of difficulty are determined by vocal registration demands, word lengths and rhythmical text setting, as well as the incidences of unfamiliar phonological processes and complex consonant clusters occurring in the text. A scope and sequence chart is included, supplemented with learning objectives and teaching strategies, which organizes the repertoire according the order in which the pieces are to be taught. A palatalization guide is provided, to provide solutions for common pronunciation problems. Included in the appendices are listings of additional recommended Russian art song titles and recommended listening and viewing.

The leading idea of the monograph is the idea of the unity of national priorities in the field of values of family education on the territory of the Russian Federation and the place of the region in its formation. Russian Russian peasant family values formation process in the second half of the XIX — early XX century is presented: in its historical and cultural context in the aspect of correlation with the stages of development of the Russian state; in its historical and pedagogical context in the aspect of correlation with the value priorities of education in the Russian peasant family, which determined the essence and content of the family way. The grounds for the representation of the North-Western region of Russia as significant in the formation of values of family education are revealed. The social conditionality of the process of development of traditional values of upbringing in the Russian peasant family is shown, provided by the coordinated actions of social institutions significant in a certain historical period: the state, pedagogical science, the socio-pedagogical movement, religion, the peasant community. The mechanisms of their translation of the values of upbringing in the Russian peasant family are revealed. It is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in the history of their region. It can be used in the implementation of basic educational programs of primary, basic, secondary general (vocational) education as the basis of educational work within the framework of educational, extracurricular activities of students; studying courses on the theory of education in the system of professional development of teaching staff; development of legislative and regulatory acts regulating issues of marriage and family relations.

With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional’nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense.

Facing the present in relation to the past, the “outsideness” of Italian Slavic studies can be seen to represent a liminal space between the self and the Other. This article discusses how the image of the Russian poet, who is capable of both satisfying a Russian quest for uniqueness and legitimizing what Western eyes often see as Russian culture’s illegibility, intersects with themes raised in the field of diversity studies. Our close analysis of texts and facts, conducted using a polycentric approach and with reference to notions of “approximation” and “contamination”, acknowledges differences as a step not towards their elimination or homogenization, but towards the “translation” into one’s own culture of voices that were originally distinct.

AbstractThis paper showcases the work that aims at building a user-friendly mobile application of a reverse dictionary to translate sign languages to spoken languages. The concept behind the reverse dictionary is the ability to perform a video-based search by demonstrating a handshape in front of a mobile phone’s camera. The user would be able to use this feature in two ways. Firstly, the user would be able to search for a word by showing a handshape for the application to provide a list of signs that contain that handshape. Secondly, the user could fingerspell the word letter by letter in front of the camera for the application to return the sign that corresponds to that word. The user can then look through the suggested videos and see their written translations. To offer other functionalities, the application also has Search by Category and Search by Word options. Currently, the reverse dictionary supports translations from Russian Sign Language (RSL) to Russian language.

This chapter employs concepts and terms drawn from Russian Formalism to assist reading key moments of non-translation in The Waste Land. Treated as avant-garde linguistic ‘shifts’ that disrupt and estrange the poetic form, particular instances of non-translation in the poem—from the epigraph to the wild cacophony of different languages at the end of the poem—are seen as covert and coded expressions of powerful affect. This chapter considers these experimental disruptions of form in the social and political contexts of post-war avant-garde revolt and recognition of individual and collective trauma.

The Russian arts were as fascinated by exotic languages, cultures, and locales as their Western European counterparts, and at first glance, Russian settings of the poetry of Hafiz appears to form part of the broader field of musical exoticism in general, and Russian orientalism in particular. This chapter begins by examining the relationship between empire and music, before setting out a rather different account of Russian musical orientalism, one marked by a complex transnational flow of literary and musical influences, as well as practices of translation, imitation, cultural appropriation, and cross-border artistic exchange. Whilst forming part of a broader tendency to imagine visions of a supposed ‘orient’ that had little to do with any documented anthropological, ethnographic, philological, or linguistic reality, Russian settings of Hafiz’s poetry are ultimately the result of the import of elements of German romanticism. Here, writers, translators, and commentators co-opted a range of ‘exotic’ literatures in an attempt to distinguish themselves from the dominance of French classicism and fashion an autonomous form of German nationalism, key elements of which were then incorporated into mid-nineteenth-century Russian culture (as in the case of Afanasy Fet’s translations of Georg Daumer’s well-known ‘versions’ of Hafiz). Accordingly, Hafiz figures not so much as the object of orientalist representation (although there is certainly a strong element of that to the songs discussed here), but as an exemplary figure within a complex network of literary mediation.

Abstract:
This article deals with problems concerning literature translation. It concerns the translation of a poetic fragment introducing the second part of Notes from Underground. A certain number of English translations are examined here that were created between 1913 and 2014; the main points of the examination are their fidelity to the Russian original (its strophic and rhythmic structure, artistic and stylistic features) and to the form given to the poetic extract by Dostoevsky (fragmentariness, attribution) and also the accompanying commentary, if present. This is another difficulty for the translator, because for the English-speaking readers the epigraph “from N.A. Nekrasov’s poetry” is a fragment from a poem totally unknown for them and not previously loaded, in their opinion, by any allusions. We can trace a certain tendency — from a poem written by a translator himself/ herself and rendering rather spirit than letter of the original, to the best of a translator’s belief, to the variants allowing the readers come close to the original text. It is stated that the commentary, on the one side, promotes an understanding of a work created in a different era and culture, but, on the other side, it can interfere with the perception by trivializing the meaning and accomplishing the text interpretation instead of a reader.

Abstract:
Impersonal sentences in the Russian language can have a logical subject in their structure, most often in the dative, which does not always have to be expressed, but can be established on the basis of a broader context, which distinguishes these sentences from impersonal sentences that are not extended by the determinant. The performer in Russian impersonal sentences, except for the dative without a preposition, can be expressed by a genitive with or without a preposition, an instrumental, and there are also examples of a direct object in the accusative without a preposition. While Russian impersonal sentences without a logical subject are most often translated into impersonal sentences, for Russian impersonal sentences with a logical subject, whether expressed or not, in Serbian we usually find translation equivalents in the form of two-part personal complete or incomplete sentences. The research confirmed the existence of a certain deviation from the observed regularities: impersonal sentences as a function of Serbian translation equivalents can also appear in cases when Russian impersonal sentences are extended by a subject determinant, expressed or unspoken. These are mostly special phrases with verbs that are stylistically marked. However, even in these cases, there is often an alternative possibility of translation in the form of a subject-predicate sentence. It is assumed that it is important to make (not always) a clear distinction between Russian impersonal sentences that do not have a performer in their structure, more precisely: between sentences that are not expanded by a subject determinant and impersonal sentences that have a performer but in which it is omitted. This difference can certainly be justified by the similarity that exists between Russian impersonal sentences with the expressed and unexpressed performer, both in the structure of the sentences themselves and in their Serbian translation equivalents. Further research can show to what extent and in what way the lexical meaning of predicates and verbs can affect expressiveness or inexpressiveness, in other words: existence or nonexistence of a logical subject in Russian impersonal sentences which would certainly further clarify this important syntactic specificity and provide translators with new possibilities and alternatives for a more accurate, clearer and, of course, even better translation.

Abstract:
This paper suggests that tourist web resources could successfully become part of the L2 class-room with the effect of reinforcing the students’ motivation and adding to their knowledge of the places in which the foreign language is spoken. We aim to show that such resources could be particularly useful if combined with a recently developed teaching methodology relying mainly on oral translation being principally based on work with texts. We suggest that a lecture would become far more exciting if presented in the form of a virtual tour. Such an experience offers not only the possibility to enjoy a virtual visit to new places, but also to learn a lot about them, while learning a foreign language at the same time.

The article studies one of the richest traditions of perception of the work of Sergei Yesenin. The Germans were the first to get acquainted with Yesenin’s heritage in their native language in 1920; today Germany is the leader in quantity and range of presented material. A rich history of translation reception, various and large-scale edition history are considered in correspondence with the cultural and historical aspect of the division of Germany, which determined the stages of translation practice and edition history, but did not affect the nature of Yesenin’s perception, thus helping to form a complete image of the Russian poet after the unification of the country.

The purpose of this study is to observe the overall picture of translations of Chinese literature for children into Russian language from the first editions to the present day. In addition to compiling a complete chronological list of all Chinese books translated into Russian from the category of children’s reading, our tasks included identifying and characterizing the main periods, trends and patterns in the development of translation and book publishing of Chinese children’s literature in Russian, analyzing the dynamics of translations in different years, analyzing the activities of translators who contributed to the development of cultural ties between the two countries, listing the names of the best illustrators, whose work played an important role in popularizing Chinese literature for children, identifying the main problems in translation and publication of children’s Chinese books in Russia at different periods. After studying the general picture of translations of Chinese literature for children into Russian, as well as taking into account the nature of historical events and political relations between China and Russia, we propose to distinguish the following seven periods in translation: 1779–1917; 1918–1949; 1950–1959; 1960–1980; 1981–1991; 1992–2013; since 2014.

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of teaching French at non-linguistic faculties, the analysis of the concepts of rendering, retelling (resumé, compte-rendu, synthèse), rendering translation of texts using an interdisciplinary approach in the context of the development of digital technologies in the modern educational space, in particular, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Extraordinary circumstances have set before teachers from many countries of the world, including Russian teachers, the task of modernizing pedagogical processes as part of the transition to a distance learning format using one or another electronic educational platform. The problem arises from integrating educational and methodological materials into the concept of distance learning, taking into account various digital resources and stages of development of information and communication technologies. A distinctive feature of the situation is the blurring of boundaries between traditional and distance approaches both in whole education, and in particular in teaching foreign languages. Teaching rendering as the most important type of speech activity, working with foreign language texts for the purpose of their subsequent rendering, is necessary to prepare students for research activities. Rendering translation plays an important teaching role and has significant potential. In the French language classes at the non-linguistic faculties of the RUDN University, texts of various genres are offered for rendering translation, for example, literary, journalistic, as well as scientific texts on relevant topics. As a result, students must learn to submit an informative abstract/summary (summary-synopsis), which contains in a generalized form all the main provisions of the original text. In the course of rendering translation, the student carries out semantic or informational processing of the text, learns to avoid violations of the theme-rhematic sequence, maintain the coherence of the text, correctly organizing information in paragraphs and preserving subject-logical connections. In addition to the skills of rendering translation, students are trained in language mediation, which is carried out by reformulating it in the form of a resume or report. The use of digital educational technologies and traditional pedagogical approaches within the framework of ensuring the concept of lifelong education helps to solve the problem, regardless of the location of the teacher and student. Under the conditions of distance learning during the COVID 19 period, the authors developed and successfully applied a system of exercises and tasks aimed at the formation and development of rendering skills, rendering translation, language mediation in French classes for students of non-linguistic faculties of RUDN University.

I prove that the interpreter of two embassy letters sent from Ivangorod (Jaanilinn) to Moscow in 1505, a certain Dmitry Ščerbaty is identical to the Russian author and diplomat Dmitry Gerasimov. This paper presents a semantic analysis of the most language-specific Russian word for ‘sadness’, namely, toska. The analysis is based on the hypothesis that one may regard translation equivalents and paraphrases of a linguistic unit extracted from real translated texts as a source of information about its semantics. The appearance of language-specific words in translated texts may be even more useful for studying their semantics. It turns out that тоска is not all that rare in Russian translated texts. The study of the incentives that lead Russian translators to use the word тоска often reveals important aspects of the semantics of this word. Stimuli for the appearance of toska in translations into Russian vary greatly. Abstract:
Violent offenders cause serious harm to their victims and affect the general well-being of the society. Many awareness and rehabilitation campaigns are introduced at the moment in Latvia that increases the necessity for adapted valid instruments in the native languages of the offenders. The aim of the research was to conduct a preliminary adaptation of Criminal Attitudes to Violence Scale (CAVS) in Latvian and Russian. CAVS has been designed to measure non-sexual physical violence of violent male offenders. Two groups (“Latvians” N=200 and “Russians” N=200) and four sub-groups of male offenders and non-offenders were formed. The translation of the scale in Latvian and Russian was organized separately and completed by back-translation method. Evaluation by both experts and a sample of target population was provided with the final Russian and Latvian versions of CAVS. Internal consistency of the items of the scale proved to be very good for all four sub-groups. Item analysis showed that both (Latvian and Russian) adapted CAVS versions work the best with the offender samples. There were three-factor structure reviled for both Latvian and Russian CAVS. The preliminary adaptation process has been completed and the further standardization process is intended.

The transfer matrix method (TMM) was used for description of harmonic vibrations of piping with transported medium. Apart from 12 well-known mechanical parameters which characterize the state of piping system in each cross section two additional parameters that characterize the vibration of the medium, namely its translation and pressure pulsations were considered. The solution of these equations, which take into account the Poisson contraction of the pipe wall, in the form suitable for the transfer matrix method application was derived. The biggest uncertainty in the analytical modeling is to adopt the boundary conditions for above mentioned 2 parameters for the considered piping section. To solve this problem of identification of the most probable induced frequency we developed the technique of choosing such boundary conditions at which the maximum of energy is confined within the considered piping section. The validity of the approach was tested on some analytical examples. This method was used to analyze the forced vibration of the second circuit loop of unit 1 Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) with VVER-1000 (from Russian: Vodo-Vodyanoi Energetichesky Reactor; Water-Water Power Reactor) arising from turbulent eddies in the flow of steam. Natural frequencies and forms of mechanical, hydrodynamic, and related hydro-mechanical vibration were found, a number of recommendations were given to reduce the vibration levels.

This article offers a structure for studying metaphorical terms in the field of economics, in the context of translation difficulties that underlie their different perception in English and Russian. It is necessary to solve the following tasks in the course of the research: (1) to identify the semantic and pragmatic characteristics of metaphorical economic terms; (2) to determine the types of transformations used in the translation of metaphorical economic terms. Literal translation, modulation, and explicatory translation should be considered as typical ways to translate metaphorical economic terms, as it is shown in our research. And the choice of a particular translation method depends on various intra- and extra-linguistic factors, such as the historical and cultural background, the mental picture of the world presented in the source language.

Abstract:
Purpose. The goal of the present article is to analyze the original text of the tragedy “Romeo and Juliette” and its translations into the Russian and Ossetian languages to reveal Shakespeare’s metaphors for further analysis of the ways they are translated and possible problems translators might come across while translating. The main methods employed in the research are: the method of contextual analysis, the descriptive-analytical and the contrastive method. Results. The research was based on the theory of Shakespeare’s metaphor introduced by S.M. Mezenin. According to S.M. Mezenin the revealed metaphors were divided into several semantic groups the most numerous of which comprises metaphors with the semantic model “man - nature” that once again proved the idea of Caroline Spurgeon. The analysis of the translations into the Russian and Ossetian languages showed that translators do not always manage to preserve in the translated text unique Shakespeare’s metaphors. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching theory and practice of translation, cultural science, comparative lexicology of the Ossetian and Russian languages and the Ossetian and English languages.

The article analyzes transformation of word-forms during spontaneous creation in live television broadcasting. Particular attention is paid to adjectives adverbs. The specific properties of adverbs makes it easier to trace general trends in their transformations, because adverbs are not burdened with many different forms and their variations, that occur in the process of word change of some other class of words at the same time adverbiatives allow to analyze in more detail the semantical and grammatical structure of speech. The main method we use is to observe the speech of live TV journalist, we used during the study methods of comparative analysis of comparison of theoretical positions from the work of individual linguists and journalists. Our objective is to trace these transformations and develop a certain attitude towards them in our researches of the language of the media and practicing journalists to support positive trends in the development of the broadcasting on TV and give recommendations for overcoming certain negative trends. All studies of the problems of transformation of grammatical forms in different ways relate to translation studies, mostly investigate the grammatical transformations, that the translator resorted to, when reproducing the original by means of another language. At first glance, it would be logical, if the live speech of television journalists was dominated by transformations? Associated with the translation from internal to foreign broadcasting in cases where natural for this TV journalists is Russian-speaking internal broadcasting and he reproducing the text from internal Russian-speaking. The transformation of grammatical forms however this cannot be seen in the live use of adverbiatives. An interesting trend can also be seen in the transformation of different types of gramma­tical forms. In particular, negative interference is mostly characteristic of the forms of corporate adverbs. Forms of the same word with the same grammatical meaning is such overlapping of two forms of the same grammatical meaning is practically impossible outside of adjectives adverbial and adjectives themselves. Only a small number of transformations are associated with the forms of superlatives.

The study is based on sociological and culturological approaches, traditions of linguistic education in Russia, which are significant for the formation of the personality of a future teacher, translator, interpreter, etc., understanding of the peculiarities of the pedagogical activity of linguists. Discussion, psychological and mathematical-statistical methods were used in the course of the following research. The results of the study have demonstrated some certain unique features of the Russian axiological space. The priorities of students in the process of assessing teachers of philologists and their professional activities are also established. The results obtained can serve as a basis for the design and testing of original trainings, refresher courses, taking into account the received request from the objects of the educational process.
